In this paper we further study the relationship between convexity and additive growth, building on the work of Schoen and Shkredov (\cite{SS}) to get some improvements to earlier results of Elekes, Nathanson and Ruzsa (\cite{ENR}). In particular, we show that for any finite set $A\subset{\mathbb{R}}$ and any strictly convex or concave function $f$, \[|A+f(A)|\gg{\frac{|A|^{24/19}}{(\log|A|)^{2/19}}}\] and \[\max\{|A-A|,\ |f(A)+f(A)|\}\gg{\frac{|A|^{14/11}}{(\log|A|)^{2/11}}}.\] For the latter of these inequalities, we go on to consider the consequences for a sum-product type problem.
We study a combinatorial notion where given a set of lattice points one takes the set of all sums of subsets of a fixed size, and we ask if the given set comes from a convex lattice polytope whether the resulting set also comes from a convex lattice polytope. We obtain a positive result in dimension 2 and a negative result in higher dimensions. We apply this to the corner cut polyhedron.
In this paper a measure of non-convexity for a simple polygonal region in the plane is introduced. It is proved that for "not far from convex" regions this measure does not decrease under the Minkowski sum operation, and guarantees that the Minkowski sum has no "holes".
We prove a conjecture of Liu and Wang on the q-log-convexity of the polynomial sequence $\{\sum_{k=0}^n{n\choose k}^2q^k\}_{n\geq 0}$. By using Pieri's rule and the Jacobi-Trudi identity for Schur functions, we obtain an expansion of a sum of products of elementary symmetric functions in terms of Schur functions with nonnegative coefficients. Then the principal specialization leads to the q-log-convexity. We also prove that a technical condition of Liu and Wang holds for the squares of the binomial coefficients. Hence we deduce that the linear transformation with respect to the triangular arra…
Let $P_{n,k}$ be the number of permutations $π$ on [n]={1, 2,..., n} such that the length of the longest increasing subsequences of $π$ equals k, and let $M_{2n, k}$ be the number of matchings on [2n] with crossing number k. Define $P_n(x)= \sum_k P_{n,k}x^k$ and $M_{2n}(x)=\sum_{k} M_{2n,k}x^k$. We propose some conjectures on the log-concavity and q-log-convexity of the polynomials $P_n(x)$ and $M_{2n}(x)$. We also introduce the notions of $\infty$-q-log-convexity and $\infty$-q-log-concavity, and the notion of higher order log-concavity with respect to $\infty$-q-log-convex or $\infty$-q-log…
This paper is devoted to the study of the log-convexity of combinatorial sequences. We show that the log-convexity is preserved under componentwise sum, under binomial convolution, and by the linear transformations given by the matrices of binomial coefficients and Stirling numbers of two kinds. We develop techniques for dealing with the log-convexity of sequences satisfying a three-term recurrence. We also introduce the concept of $q$-log-convexity and establish the connection with linear transformations preserving the log-convexity. As applications of our results, we prove the log-convexity …
In his study of Ramanujan-Sato type series for $1/π$, Sun introduced a sequence of polynomials $S_n(q)$ as given by $$S_n(q)=\sum\limits_{k=0}^n{n\choose k}{2k\choose k}{2(n-k)\choose n-k}q^k,$$ and he conjectured that the polynomials $S_n(q)$ are $q$-log-convex. By imitating a result of Liu and Wang on generating new $q$-log-convex sequences of polynomials from old ones, we obtain a sufficient condition for determining the $q$-log-convexity of self-reciprocal polynomials. Based on this criterion, we then give an affirmative answer to Sun's conjecture.
Using Schur positivity and the principal specialization of Schur functions, we provide a proof of a recent conjecture of Liu and Wang on the $q$-log-convexity of the Narayana polynomials, and a proof of the second conjecture that the Narayana transformation preserves the log-convexity. Based on a formula of Bränd$\mathrm{\acute{e}}$n which expresses the $q$-Narayana numbers as the specializations of Schur functions, we derive several symmetric function identities using the Littlewood-Richardson rule for the product of Schur functions, and obtain the strong $q$-log-convexity of the Narayana pol…
We prove a new class of low-energy decompositions which, amongst other consequences, imply that any finite set $A$ of integers may be written as $A = B \cup C$, where $B$ and $C$ are disjoint sets satisfying \[ |\{ (b_1, \dots, b_{2s}) \in B^{2s} \ | \ b_1 + \dots + b_{s} = b_{s+1} + \dots + b_{2s}\}| \ll_{s} |B|^{2s - (\log \log s)^{1/2 - o(1)}} \] and \[ |\{ (c_1, \dots, c_{2s}) \in C^{2s} \ | \ c_1 \dots c_{s} = c_{s+1} \dots c_{2s} \}| \ll_{s} |C|^{2s - (\log \log s)^{1/2 - o(1)}}.\] This generalises previous results of Bourgain--Chang on many-fold sumsets and product sets to the setting o…
Let $P \subset \mathbb R^2$ be a point set with cardinality $N$. We give an improved bound for the number of dot products determined by $P$, proving that, \[ |\{ p \cdot q :p,q \in P \}| \gg N^{2/3+c}. \] A crucial ingredient in the proof of this bound is a new superquadratic expander involving products and shifts. We prove that, for any finite set $X \subset \mathbb R$, there exist $z,z' \in X$ such that \[ \left|\frac{(zX+1)^{(2)}(z'X+1)^{(2)}}{(zX+1)^{(2)}(z'X+1)}\right| \gtrsim |X|^{5/2}. \] This is derived from a more general result concerning growth of sets defined via convexity and sum …
Toll convexity is a variation of the so-called interval convexity. A tolled walk $T$ between $u$ and $v$ in $G$ is a walk of the form $T: u,w_1,\ldots,w_k,v,$ where $k\ge 1$, in which $w_1$ is the only neighbor of $u$ in $T$ and $w_k$ is the only neighbor of $v$ in $T$. As in geodesic or monophonic convexity, toll interval between $u,v\in V(G)$ is a set $T_G(u,v)=\{x\in V(G)\,:\,x \textrm{ lies on a tolled walk between } u \textrm{ and } v\}$. A set of vertices $S$ is toll convex, if $T_{G}(u,v)\subseteq S$ for all $u,v\in S$. First part of the paper reinvestigates the characterization of conv…
Given a finite set $V$, a convexity $\mathscr{C}$, is a collection of subsets of $V$ that contains both the empty set and the set $V$ and is closed under intersections. The elements of $\mathscr{C}$ are called convex sets. The digital convexity, originally proposed as a tool for processing digital images, is defined as follows: a subset $S\subseteq V(G)$ is digitally convex if, for every $v\in V(G)$, we have $N[v]\subseteq N[S]$ implies $v\in S$. The number of cyclic binary strings with blocks of length at least $k$ is expressed as a linear recurrence relation for $k\geq 2$. A bijection is est…
We prove bounds for the number of solutions to $$a_1 + \dots + a_k = a_1' + \dots + a_k'$$ over $N$-element sets of reals, which are sufficiently convex or near-convex. A near-convex set will be the image of a set with small additive doubling under a convex function with sufficiently many strictly monotone derivatives. We show, roughly, that every time the number of terms in the equation is doubled, an additional saving of $1$ in the exponent of the trivial bound $N^{2k-1}$ is made, starting from the trivial case $k=1$. In the context of near-convex sets we also provide explicit dependencies o…
