The paper surveys the basic properties of generalized Stieltjes functions including some new ones. We introduce the notion of the exact Stieltjes order and give a criterion of exactness, simple sufficient conditions and some prototypical examples. The paper includes an appendix, where we define the left sided Riemann-Liouville and the right sided Kober-Erdelyi fractional integrals of measures supported on half axis and give inversion formulas for them.
In this paper we apply generalized Stieltjes transform representation to study the generalized hypergeometric function. Among the results thus proved are new integral representations, inequalities, properties of the Padé table and the properties of the generalized hypergeometric function as a conformal map.
We consider mapping properties of the iterated Stieltjes transform, establishing its new relations with the iterated Hilbert transform (a singular integral) on the half-axis and proving the corresponding convolution and Titchmarsh's type theorems. Moreover, the obtained convolution method is applied to solve a new class of singular integral equations.
For two families of beta distributions, we show that the generalized Stieltjes transforms of their elements may be written as elementary functions (powers and fractions) of the Stieltjes transform of the Wigner distribution. In particular, we retrieve the examples given by the author in a previous paper and relating generalized Stieltjes transforms of special beta distributions to powers of (ordinary) Stieltjes ones. We also provide further examples of similar relations which are motivated by the representation theory of symmetric groups. Remarkably, the power of the Stieltjes transform of the…
The aim of this paper is to investigate in detail the known large argument asymptotic series of the Lommel function by Stieltjes transform representations. We obtain a number of properties of this asymptotic expansion, including explicit and realistic error bounds, exponentially improved asymptotic expansions, and the smooth transition of the Stokes discontinuities. An interesting consequence related to the large argument asymptotic series of the Struve function is also proved.
We present a elementary approach to asymptotic behavior of generalized functions in the Cesàro sense. Our approach is based on Yosida's subspace of Mikusiński operators. Applications to Laplace and Stieltjes transforms are given.
Maximal angular operator sends a function defined in a sector of the complex plane to a Maximal angular operator sends a function defined in a sector of the complex plane with vertex at 0 to the function of modulus obtained by maximizing over argument. Compositions of the so defined maximal angular operator (in suitable sectors) with the Poisson, Stieltjes and Laplace transforms are shown to be bounded (nonlinear) operators from $L^p$ to $L^q$ for the same values of $p$ and $q$ as their standard counterparts.
For each of the eight $n$-th derivative parameter changing formulas for Gauss hypergeometric functions a corresponding fractional integration formula is given. For both types of formulas the differential or integral operator is intertwining between two actions of the hypergeometric differential operator (for two sets of parameters): a so-called transmutation property. This leads to eight fractional integration formulas and four generalized Stieltjes transform formulas for each of the six different explicit solutions of the hypergeometric differential equation, by letting the transforms act on …
By using structural and asymptotic properties of the Kontorovich-Lebedev transform associated with Minkowski's question mark function, we give an affirmative answer to the question posed by R. Salem (Trans. Amer. Math. Soc., 53 (3), (1943), p. 439) whether its Fourier-Stieltjes transform vanishes at infinity. This paper is substituted with a correct alternative and affirmative solution of Salem's problem and its generalization for derivatives of any order of the Fourier-Stieltjes transform of the Minkowski'i question mark function. The question is finally solved.
We characterize the weights for the Stieltjes transform and the Calderón operator to be bounded on the weighted variable Lebesgue spaces $L_w^{p(\cdot)}(0,\infty)$, assuming that the exponent function $p(\cdot)$ is log-Hölder continuous at the origin and at infinity. We obtain a single Muckenhoupt-type condition by means of a maximal operator defined with respect to the basis of intervals $\{ (0,b) : b>0\}$ on $(0,\infty)$. Our results extend those in \cite{DMRO1} for the constant exponent $L^p$ spaces with weights. We also give two applications: the first is a weighted version of Hilbert's in…
In this paper we prove pointwise and distributional Fourier transform inversion theorems for functions on the real line that are locally of bounded variation, while in a neighbourhood of infinity are Lebesgue integrable or have polynomial growth. We also allow the Fourier transform to exist in the principal value sense. A function is called regulated if it has a left limit and a right limit at each point. The main inversion theorem is obtained by solving the differential equation $df(t)-iωf(t)=g(t)$ for a regulated function $f$, where $ω$ is a complex number with positive imaginary part. This …
Pleijel's inequality is an approximate inversion formula for the Stieltjes transform (or Cauchy integral) of a distribution function on positive semi-axis. It implies a Tauberian theorem due to Malliavin. The proposed analogs of Pleijel's inequality deal with (1) approximate recovery of the Riesz means of the distribution function from its Stieltjes transform, and (2) approximate recovery of the distribution function with power growth for which the ordinary Stieltjes transform does not exist. In the latter case, a power of the Cauchy (or Stieltjes) kernel is used to define the "generalized Sti…
In our previous work we found sufficient conditions to be imposed on the parameters of the generalized hypergeometric function in order that it be completely monotonic or of Stieltjes class. In this paper we collect a number of consequences of these properties. In particular, we find new integral representations of the generalized hypergeometric functions, evaluate a number of integrals of their products, compute the jump and the average value of the the generalized hypergeometric function over the branch cut, establish new inequalities for this function in the half plane Re(z)<1. Furthermore,…
A class of Stieltjes functions of finite type is introduced. These satisfy Widder's conditions on the successive derivatives up to some finite order, and are not necessarily smooth. We show that such functions have a unique integral representation, along some generic kernel which is a truncated Laurent series approximating the standard Stieltjes kernel. We then obtain a two-to-one correspondence, via the logarithmic derivative, between these functions and a subclass of hyperbolically monotone functions of finite type. This correspondence generalizes a representation of HCM functions in terms o…
Finite-part integration is a recently introduced method of evaluating convergent integrals by means of the finite part of divergent integrals [E.A. Galapon, {\it Proc. R. Soc. A 473, 20160567} (2017)]. Current application of the method involves exact and asymptotic evaluation of the generalized Stieltjes transform $\int_0^a f(x)/(ω+ x)^ρ \, \mathrm{d}x$ under the assumption that the extension of $f(x)$ in the complex plane is entire. In this paper, the method is elaborated further and extended to accommodate the presence of competing singularities of the complex extension of $f(x)$. Finite par…
We construct certain Rajchman measures by using integrability properties of the Fourier and Fourier-Stieltjes transforms. Further we show that Minkowski's question mark function ?(x), which is a singular monotone function, belongs to one of these classes. This circumstance leads us to a rigorous proof of the problem posed by R. Salem (Trans. Amer. Math. Soc. 53 (3) (1943), p. 439) whether Fourier-Stieltjes coefficients of this function vanish at infinity and whose affirmative solution was recently announced by the author in [13]. Moreover, we generalize this problem, proving that derivatives o…
We construct certain Rajchman measures by using integrability properties of the Fourier and Fourier-Stieltjes transforms. In particular, we state a problem and prove that it is equivalent to the known and still unsolved question posed by R. Salem (Trans. Amer. Math. Soc. 53 (3) (1943), p. 439) whether Fourier-Stieltjes coefficients of the Minkowski's question mark function vanish at infinity.
Employing the generalized Parseval equality for the Mellin transform and elementary trigonometric formulas, the iterated Hartley transform on the nonnegative half-axis (the iterated half-Hartley transform) is investigated in L_2. Mapping and inversion properties are discussed, its relationship with the iterated Stieltjes transform is established. Various compositions with the Fourier cosine and sine transforms are obtained. The results are applied to the uniqueness and universality of the closed form solutions for certain new singular integral and integro-functional equations.
We give several expansion and identities involving the Ramanujan function $A_q$ and the Stieltjes--Wigert polynomials. Special values of our idenitities give $m$-versions of some of the items on the Slater list of Rogers-Ramanujan type identities. We also study some bilateral extensions of certain transformations in the theory of basic hypergeometric functions.
We investigate Laplace type and Laplace-Stieltjes type multipliers in the $d$-dimensional setting of the Dunkl harmonic oscillator with the associated group of reflections isomorphic to $\mathbb{Z}_2^d$ and in the related context of Laguerre function expansions of convolution type. We use Calderón-Zygmund theory to prove that these multiplier operators are bounded on weighted $L^p$, $1<p<\infty$, and from $L^1$ to weak $L^1$.
We show that a large collection of special functions, in particular Nielsen's beta function, are generalized Stieltjes functions of order 2, and therefore logarithmically completely monotonic. This includes the Laplace transform of functions of the form $xf(x)$, where $f$ is itself the Laplace transform of a sum of dilations and translations of periodic functions. Our methods are also applied to ratios of Gamma functions, and to the remainders in asymptotic expansions of the double Gamma function of Barnes.
Some multiple hypergeometric transformation formulas arising from the balanced du- ality transformation formula are discussed through the symmetry. Derivations of some transformation formulas with different dimensions are given by taking certain limits of the balanced duality transformation. By combining some of them, some transformation formulas for $A_n$ basic hypergeometric series is given. They include some generalizations of Watson, Sears and ${}_8 W_7$ transformations.
