There exist two deformations of standard electrodynamics that describe Lorentz symmetry violation in the photon sector: CPT-odd Maxwell-Chern-Simons theory and CPT-even modified Maxwell theory. In this article, we focus on the parity-odd nonbirefringent sector of modified Maxwell theory. It is coupled to a standard Dirac theory of massive spin-1/2 fermions resulting in a modified quantum electrodynamics (QED). This theory is discussed with respect to properties such as microcausality and unitarity, where it turns out that these hold. Furthermore, a priori, the limit of the theory for vanishing Lorentz-violating parameters seems to be discontinuous. Since it is not clear, whether this is a gauge artifact, the cross section for a physical process - modified Compton scattering - is calculated numerically. Despite the numerical instabilities occurring for scattering of unpolarized electrons off polarized photons in the second physical polarization state, it is shown that for Lorentz-violating parameters much smaller than 1 the modified theory approaches standard QED, which is strengthened by analytical investigations. Hence, the theory proves to be consistent, at least with regard to the investigations performed. This leads to the interesting result of having a well-defined parity-odd extension of QED.
A particularly simple Lorentz-violating modification of the Maxwell theory of photons maintains gauge invariance, CPT, and renormalization. This modified-Maxwell theory, coupled to standard Dirac particles, involves nineteen dimensionless "deformation parameters." Ten of these parameters lead to birefringence and are already tightly constrained by astrophysics. New bounds on the remaining nine nonbirefringent parameters can be obtained from the absence of vacuum Cherenkov radiation for ultrahigh-energy cosmic rays (UHECRs). Using selected UHECR events recorded at the Pierre Auger Observatory a…
The CPT-even gauge sector of the Standard Model Extension is composed of nineteen components comprised in the tensor $(K_{F})_{μνρσ}$, of \ which nine do not yield birefringence. In this work, we examine the Maxwell electrodynamics supplemented by these nine nonbirefringent CPT-even components in aspects related to the Feynman propagator and full consistency (stability, causality, unitarity). We adopt a prescription that parametrizes the nonbirefringent components in terms of a symmetric and traceless tensor, $K_{μν},$ and second parametrization that writes $K_{μν}$ in terms of two arbitrary f…
In this work analyze the physical consistency of a nonbirefringent Lorentz-violating planar model via the analysis of the pole structure of its Feynman propagators. The nonbirefringent planar model, obtained from the dimensional reduction of the CPT-even gauge sector of the standard model extension, is composed of a gauge and a scalar fields, being affected by Lorentz-violating (LIV) coefficients encoded in the symmetric tensor $κ_{μν}$. The propagator of the gauge field is explicitly evaluated and expressed in terms of linear independent symmetric tensors, presenting only one physical mode. T…
We have studied a (1+2)-dimensional Lorentz-violating model which is obtained from the dimensional reduction of the nonbirefringent sector of the CPT-even electrodynamics of the standard model extension (SME). The planar theory contains a gauge sector and a scalar sector which are linearly coupled by means of a Lorentz-invariance violating (LIV) vector, $S^μ$, while the kinetic terms of both sectors are affected by the components of a Lorentz-violating symmetric tensor, $κ^{μν}$. The energy-momentum tensor reveals that both sectors present energy stability for sufficiently small values of the …
In this work, we explicitly evaluate the gauge propagator of the Maxwell theory supplemented by the CPT-even term of the SME. First, we specialize our evaluation for the parity-odd sector of the tensor $W_{μνρσ}$,\ using a parametrization that retains only the three nonbirefringent coefficients. From the poles of the propagator, it is shown that physical modes of this electrodynamics are stable, non-causal and unitary. In the sequel, we carry out the parity-even gauge propagator using a parametrization that allows to work with only the isotropic nonbirefringent element. In this case, we show t…
The Lorentz-violating isotropic modified Maxwell theory minimally coupled to standard Dirac theory is characterized by a single real dimensionless parameter which is taken to vanish for the case of the standard (Lorentz-invariant) theory. A finite domain of positive and negative values of this Lorentz-violating parameter is determined, in which microcausality and unitarity hold. The main focus of this article is on isotropic modified Maxwell theory, but similar results for two anisotropic nonbirefringent cases are presented in the appendices.
This work examines the finite temperature properties of the CPT-even and parity-odd electrodynamics of the standard model extension. We start from the partition function written into the functional integral formalism in Ref. \cite{Finite}. After specializing the Lorentz-violating tensor $ W_{ανρφ}$ for the nonbirefringent and parity-odd coefficients, the partition function is explicitly carry out, showing that it is a power of the Maxwell's partition function. Also, it is observed that the LIV coefficients induce an anisotropy in the black body angular energy density distribution. The Planck's…
Direct laboratory bounds on the 9 nonbirefringent Lorentz-violating dimensionless parameters of modified-Maxwell theory range from the 10^{-7} level to the 10^{-16} level. The detection of air showers initiated by charged primaries (ultrahigh-energy cosmic-rays) and neutral primaries (TeV gamma-rays) allows us to obtain new indirect bounds ranging from the 10^{-15} level to the 10^{-19} level. Possible physics implications are briefly discussed.
We consider nonstandard photons from nonbirefringent modified Maxwell theory and discuss their propagation in a fixed Schwarzschild spacetime background. This particular modification of Maxwell theory is Lorentz-violating and allows for maximal photon velocities differing from the causal speed c of the asymptotic background spacetime. In the limit of geometrical optics, light rays from modified Maxwell theory are found to propagate along null geodesics in an effective metric. We observe that not every Lorentz-violating theory with multiple maximal velocities different from the causal speed c m…
We construct parity and time reversal invariant Maxwell-Chern-Simons gauge theory coupled to fermions with adding the parity partner to the matter and the gauge fields, which can give nontopological vortex solutions depending on the sign of the Chern-Simons coupling constant.
We propose a new \emph{CPT}-even and Lorentz-violating nonminimal coupling between fermions and Abelian gauge fields involving the CPT-even tensor $(K_{F})_{μναβ}$ of the standard model extension. We thus investigate its effects on the cross section of the electron-positron scattering by analyzing the process $e^{+}+e^{-}\rightarrowμ^{+}+μ^{-}$. Such a study was performed for the parity-odd and parity-even nonbirefringent components of the Lorentz-violating $(K_{F})_{μναβ}$ tensor. Finally, by using experimental data available in the literature, we have imposed upper bounds as tight as $10^{-1…
We have established the Gupta-Bleuler quantization of the photon belonging to the anisotropic parity-even sector of the CPT-even and Lorentz-violating nonbirefringent electrodynamics of the standard model extension. We first present a rule for the Maxwell electrodynamics to be successfully quantized via Gupta-Bleuler technique in the Lorentz gauge. Recognizing the failure of the Gupta-Bleuler method in the Lorentz gauge, $\partial _{μ}A^{μ}=0$, for this massless LV theory, we argue that Gupta-Bleuler can be satisfactorily implemented by choosing a modified Lorentz condition, $\partial _{μ}A^{μ…
First, we show that in the $(1,0)\oplus(0,1)$ representation space there exist not one but two theories for charged particles. In the Weinberg construct, the boson and its antiboson carry {\it same} relative intrinsic parity, whereas in our construct the relative intrinsic parities of the boson and its antiboson are {\it opposite}. These results originate from the commutativity of the operations of Charge conjugation and Parity in Weinberg's theory, and from the anti-commutativity of the operations of Charge conjugation and Parity in our theory. We thus claim that we have constructed a first n…
A Lorentz-noninvariant modification of quantum electrodynamics (QED) is considered, which has photons described by the nonbirefringent sector of modified Maxwell theory and electrons described by the standard Dirac theory. These photons and electrons are taken to propagate and interact in a Schwarzschild spacetime background. For appropriate Lorentz-violating parameters, the photons have an effective horizon lying outside the Schwarzschild horizon. A particular type of Compton scattering event, taking place between these two horizons (in the photonic ergoregion) and ultimately decreasing the m…
Following up on a recent paper by two of us (DM and SS), demonstrating the large enhancement in observable optical activity in radiation from high redshift sources arising from the string-based coupling of bulk Kalb-Ramond field to the Maxwell Chern Simons three-form on the brane in a Randall-Sundrum braneworld, we exhibit here a similar enhancement in parity-violating temperature-polarization correlations, yet unseen, in the CMB anisotropy due to a generalized parity-violating Kalb-Ramond axion-photon interaction proposed earlier by one of us (PM). The non-observation of such correlations in …
We present a self-dual parity-invariant $U(1) \times U(1)$ Maxwell-Chern-Simons scalar $\text{QED}_3$. We show that the energy functional admits a Bogomol'nyi-type lower bound, whose saturation gives rise to first order self-duality equations. We perform a detailed analysis of this system, discussing its main features and exhibiting explicit numerical solutions corresponding to finite-energy topological vortices and non-topological solitons. The mixed Chern-Simons term plays an important role here, ensuring the main properties of the model and suggesting possible applications in condensed matt…
We study the gauge covariance of the fermion propagator in Maxwell-Chern-Simons planar quantum electrodynamics (QED$_3$) considering four-component spinors with parity-even and parity-odd mass terms both for fermions and photons. Starting with its tree level expression in the Landau gauge, we derive a non perturbative expression for this propagator in an arbitrary covariant gauge by means of its Landau-Khalatnikov-Fradkin transformation (LKFT). We compare our findings in the weak coupling regime with the direct one-loop calculation of the two-point Green function and observe perfect agreement …
The electrodynamics supplemented with a Chern-Simons (CS) action (Carrol-Field-Jackiw electrodynamics) in a half space is studied. The passage of photons and/or massive vector mesons through a boundary between the CS medium and the vacuum of conventional Maxwell electrodynamics is investigated. Effects of reflection from a boundary (up to the total one) are revealed when vector particles escape to vacuum and income from vacuum passing the boundary. Both the space-like and time-like CS vectors are considered.
We study the stability of static black holes in generalized Einstein-Maxwell-scalar theories. We derive the master equations for the odd and even parity perturbations. The sufficient and necessary conditions for the stability of black holes under odd-parity perturbations are derived. We show that these conditions are usually not similar to energy conditions even in the simplest case of a minimally coupled scalar field. We obtain the necessary conditions for the stability of even-parity perturbations. We also derived the speed of propagation of the five degrees of freedom and obtained the class…
We study the analytical structure of the fermion propagator in planar quantum electrodynamics coupled to a Chern-Simons term within a four-component spinor formalism. The dynamical generation of parity-preserving and parity-violating fermion mass terms is considered, through the solution of the corresponding Schwinger-Dyson equation for the fermion propagator at leading order of the 1/N approximation in Landau gauge. The theory undergoes a first order phase transition toward chiral symmetry restoration when the Chern-Simons coefficient $θ$ reaches a critical value which depends upon the number…
A variant of an earlier proposal by the author and SenGupta, to describe four dimensional Maxwell electrodynamics in Einstein-Cartan spacetimes through a Kalb-Ramond field as an intermediary, is shown to lead to a new Maxwell-Kalb-Ramond coupling that violates spatial parity, even when the KR gauge field has its standard parity assignment. One consequence of this coupling seems to be a modulation, independent of wavelength but dependent on the KR field strength, of the intensity of synchrotron radiation observed from distant galactic sources.
Some aspects of the nonbirefringent CPT-even gauge sector of the Standard Model Extension (SME), in the vicinity of a semi-transparent mirror, are investigated in this paper. We first consider a model where the Lorentz symmetry breaking is caused by a single background vector $v^μ$, and we obtain perturbative results up to second order in $v^μ$. Specifically, we compute the modified propagator for the gauge field due to the presence of the mirror and we analyze the corresponding interaction between the mirror and a stationary point-like charge. We show that when the charge is placed in the vic…
We discuss the quasi-normal oscillations of black holes which are sourced by a nonlinear electrodynamic field. While previous studies have focused on the computation of quasi-normal frequencies for the wave or higher spin equation on a fixed background geometry described by such black holes, here we compute for the first time the quasi-normal frequencies for the coupled electromagnetic-gravitational linear perturbations. To this purpose, we consider a parametrized family of Lagrangians for the electromagnetic field which contains the Maxwell Lagrangian as a special case. In the Maxwell case, t…
We start from a parity-breaking MCS QED$_{3}$ model with spontaneous breaking of the gauge symmetry as a framework for evaluation of the electron-electron interaction potential and for attainment of numerical values for the e-e bound state. Three expressions are obtained for the potential according to the polarization state of the scattered electrons. In an energy scale compatible with Condensed Matter electronic excitations, these three potentials become degenerated. The resulting potential is implemented in the Schrodinger equation and the variational method is applied to carry out the elect…
This work completes the classification of the cubic vertices for arbitrary spin massless bosons in three dimensions started in a previous companion paper by constructing parity-odd vertices. Similarly to the parity-even case, there is a unique parity-odd vertex for any given triple $s_1\geq s_2\geq s_3\geq 2$ of massless bosons if the triangle inequalities are satisfied ($s_1<s_2+s_3$) and none otherwise. These vertices involve two (three) derivatives for odd (even) values of the sum $s_1+s_2+s_3$. A non-trivial relation between parity-even and parity-odd vertices is found. Similarly to the pa…
Higher derivative field theories with interactions raise serious doubts about their validity due to severe energy instabilities. In many cases the implementation of a direct perturbation treatment to excise the dangerous negative-energies from a higher derivative field theory may lead to violations of Lorentz and other symmetries. In this work we study a perturbative formulation for higher derivative field theories that allows the construction of a low-energy effective field theory being a genuine perturbations over the ordinary-derivative theory and having a positive-defined Hamiltonian. We s…
In this work, we focus on some properties of the parity-even sector of the CPT-even electrodynamics of the standard model extension. We analyze how the six non-birefringent terms belonging to this sector modify the static and stationary classical solutions of the usual Maxwell theory. We observe that the parity-even terms do not couple the electric and magnetic sectors (at least in the stationary regime). The Green's method is used to obtain solutions for the field strengths E and B at first order in the Lorentz- covariance-violating parameters. Explicit solutions are attained for point-like a…
In this work, we examine the finite temperature properties of the CPT-even and Lorentz-invariance-violating (LIV) electrodynamics of the standard model extension, represented by the term $W_{ανρϕ}F^{αν}F^{ρϕ}$. We begin analyzing the hamiltonian structure following the Dirac's procedure for constrained systems and construct a well-defined and gauge invariant partition function in the functional integral formalism. Next, we specialize for the non-birefringent coefficients of the tensor $W_{ανρϕ}$. In the sequel, the partition function is explicitly carried out for the parity-even sector of the …
In this paper, we consider the evaluation of the effective action for photons coupled to charged scalar fields in the framework of a $(2+1)$-dimensional noncommutative spacetime. In order to determine the noncommutative Maxwell Lagrangian density, we follow a perturbative approach, by integrating out the charged scalar fields, to compute the respective graphs for the vev's $\left\langle AA \right\rangle$, $\left\langle AAA \right\rangle$ and $\left\langle AAAA \right\rangle$. Surprisingly, it is shown that these contributions are planar and that, in the highly noncommutative limit, correspond …
We demonstrate for the first the existence of electrically charged BPS vortices in a Maxwell-Higgs model supplemented with a parity-odd Lorentz-violating (LV) structure belonging to the CPT-even gauge sector of the standard model extension and a fourth order potential (in the absence of the Chern-Simons term). The modified first order BPS equations provide charged vortex configurations endowed with some interesting features: localized and controllable spatial thickness, integer flux quantization, electric field inversion and localized magnetic flux reversion. This model could possibly be appli…
