In this work, we explicitly evaluate the gauge propagator of the Maxwell theory supplemented by the CPT-even term of the SME. First, we specialize our evaluation for the parity-odd sector of the tensor $W_{μνρσ}$,\ using a parametrization that retains only the three nonbirefringent coefficients. From the poles of the propagator, it is shown that physical modes of this electrodynamics are stable, non-causal and unitary. In the sequel, we carry out the parity-even gauge propagator using a parametrization that allows to work with only the isotropic nonbirefringent element. In this case, we show that the physical modes of the parity-even sector of the tensor $W$ are causal, stable and unitary for a limited range of the isotropic coefficient.
The CPT-even gauge sector of the Standard Model Extension is composed of nineteen components comprised in the tensor $(K_{F})_{μνρσ}$, of \ which nine do not yield birefringence. In this work, we examine the Maxwell electrodynamics supplemented by these nine nonbirefringent CPT-even components in aspects related to the Feynman propagator and full consistency (stability, causality, unitarity). We adopt a prescription that parametrizes the nonbirefringent components in terms of a symmetric and traceless tensor, $K_{μν},$ and second parametrization that writes $K_{μν}$ in terms of two arbitrary f…
The origin of the radiatively induced Lorentz and CPT violations, in perturbative evaluations, of an extended version of QED, is investigated. Using a very general calculational method, concerning the manipulations and calculations involving divergent amplitudes, we clearly identify the possible sources of contributions for the violating terms. We show that consistency in the perturbative calculations, in a broader sense, leaves no room for the existence of radiatively induced contributions which is in accordance with what was previously conjectured and recently advocated by some authors suppo…
Based on the motivation that some quantum gravity theories predicts the Lorentz Invariance Violation (LIV) around Planck-scale energy levels, this paper proposes a new formalism that addresses the possible effects of LIV in the electrodynamics. This formalism is capable of changing the usual electrodynamics through high derivative arbitrary mass dimension terms that includes a constant background field controlling the intensity of LIV in the models, producing modifications in the dispersion relations in a manner that is similar to the Myers-Pospelov approach. With this framework, it was possib…
In this work we investigate the radiatively induced Chern-Simons-like terms in four-dimensions at zero and finite temperature. We use the approach of rationalizing the fermion propagator up to the leading order in the CPT-violating coupling $b_μ$. In this approach, we have shown that although the coefficient of Chern-Simons term can be found unambiguously in different regularization schemes at zero or finite temperature, it remains undetermined. We observe a correspondence among results obtained at finite and zero temperature.
In this paper, we investigate an electrodynamics in which the physical modes are coupled to a Lorentz-violating (LV) background by means of a higher-derivative term. We analyze the modes associated with the dispersion relations (DRs) obtained from the poles of the propagator. More specifically, we study Maxwell's electrodynamics modified by a LV operator of mass dimension 6. The modification has the form ${D_{βα}}\partial_σF^{σβ}\partial_λ F^{λα}$, i.e., it possesses two additional derivatives coupled to a \textit{CPT}-even tensor $D_{βα}$ that plays the role of the fixed background. We first …
In this paper, we describe the quantum electrodynamics added by Lorentz-violating CPT-even terms in the context of the standard model extension. We focus our attention on the fermion sector, represented by the CPT-even symmetric Lorentz-breaking tensor $c_{μν}$. We adopt a generic form that parametrizes the components of $c_{μν}$ in terms of one four-vector, namely, $c_{μν}=u_μu_ν- ζ\frac{u^2}{4}g_{μν}$. We then generate perturbatively, up to the third order in this tensor, the aether-like term for the gauge field. Finally, we discuss the renormalization scheme for the gauge propagator, by tak…
We investigate an alternative CPT-odd Lorentz-breaking QED which includes the Carroll-Field-Jackiw (CFJ) term of the Standard Model Extension (SME), writing the gauge sector in the action in a Palatini-like form, in which the vectorial field and the field-strength tensor are treated as independent entities. Interestingly, this naturally induces a Lorentz-violating mass term in the classical action. We study physical consistency aspects of the model both at classical and quantum levels.
Some aspects of the nonbirefringent CPT-even gauge sector of the Standard Model Extension (SME), in the vicinity of a semi-transparent mirror, are investigated in this paper. We first consider a model where the Lorentz symmetry breaking is caused by a single background vector $v^μ$, and we obtain perturbative results up to second order in $v^μ$. Specifically, we compute the modified propagator for the gauge field due to the presence of the mirror and we analyze the corresponding interaction between the mirror and a stationary point-like charge. We show that when the charge is placed in the vic…
We study a class of generalized Abelian gauge field theories where CPT symmetry is violated by a Chern-Simons-like term which selects a preferred direction in spacetime. Such Chern-Simons-like terms may either emerge as part of the low-energy effective action of a more fundamental theory or be produced by chiral anomalies over a nonsimply connected spacetime manifold. Specifically, we investigate the issues of unitarity and causality. We find that the behaviour of these gauge field theories depends on whether the preferred direction is spacelike or timelike. For a purely spacelike preferred di…
In this work analyze the physical consistency of a nonbirefringent Lorentz-violating planar model via the analysis of the pole structure of its Feynman propagators. The nonbirefringent planar model, obtained from the dimensional reduction of the CPT-even gauge sector of the standard model extension, is composed of a gauge and a scalar fields, being affected by Lorentz-violating (LIV) coefficients encoded in the symmetric tensor $κ_{μν}$. The propagator of the gauge field is explicitly evaluated and expressed in terms of linear independent symmetric tensors, presenting only one physical mode. T…
The spectrum of the massive CPT-odd Yang-Mills propagator with Lorentz violation is performed at tree-level. The modification is due to mass terms generated by the exigence of multiplicative renormalizability of Yang-Mills theory with Lorentz violation. The causality analysis is performed from group and front velocities for both, spacelike and timelike background tensors. It is show that, by demanding causality, it is always possible to define a physical sector for the gauge propagator. Hence, it is expected that the model is also unitary, if one takes the Faddeev-Popov ghost into account.
In the current paper the properties of a quantum field theory based on certain sets of Lorentz-violating coefficients in the nonminimal fermion sector of the Standard-Model Extension are analyzed. In particular, three families of coefficients are considered, where two of them are CPT-even and the third is CPT-odd. As a first step the modified fermion dispersion relations are obtained. Then the positive- and negative-energy solutions of the modified Dirac equation and the fermion propagator are derived. These are used to demonstrate the validity of the optical theorem at tree-level, which provi…
In this paper, we investigate a CPT-even model with a Lorentz-violating mass term. Such kind of models may present very interesting features like superluminal modes of propagation or even instantaneous long-range interactions. The mass term we investigate can be induced at classical or quantum level in a scenario with spontaneous gauge symmetry breaking in a gauge-Higgs model without Lorentz symmetry. We analyze the physical consistency of the model by studying the poles of the propagator. By using the Noether Dualization Method (NDM), we obtain a gauge invariant dual theory for this model. Th…
We develop new more powerful techniques, based on an almost closed form for the lattice worldsheet propagator, for analyzing planar open string worldsheets defined on a lightcone lattice. We show that results obtained in earlier work are easily reproduced with far more precision. In particular, consistency checks which required numerical analysis in the earlier work can now be confirmed exactly.
In this article we consider an open string attached to a D$_p$-brane, in the presence of the pp-wave and background gauge fields. The effects of the string mass on the open string propagator, open string metric and the noncommutativity parameter are studied. Some free matrices appear in the propagator and in the open string variables. The symmetries of the string propagator and consistency with the zero mass case put some restrictions on these matrices.
In this paper, we consider an electrodynamics of higher derivatives coupled to a Lorentz-violating background tensor. Specifically, we are interested in a dimension-five term of the CPT-odd sector of the nonminimal Standard-Model Extension. By a particular choice of the operator $\hat{k}_{AF}$, we obtain a higher-derivative version of the Carroll-Field-Jackiw (CFJ) term, $\frac{1}{2}ε^{κλμν}A_λD_κ\square F_{μν}$, with a Lorentz-violating background vector $D_κ$. This modification is subject to being investigated. We calculate the propagator of the theory and from its poles, we analyze the disp…
There exist two deformations of standard electrodynamics that describe Lorentz symmetry violation in the photon sector: CPT-odd Maxwell-Chern-Simons theory and CPT-even modified Maxwell theory. In this article, we focus on the parity-odd nonbirefringent sector of modified Maxwell theory. It is coupled to a standard Dirac theory of massive spin-1/2 fermions resulting in a modified quantum electrodynamics (QED). This theory is discussed with respect to properties such as microcausality and unitarity, where it turns out that these hold. Furthermore, a priori, the limit of the theory for vanishing…
In this work, we investigate the consequences of the spontaneous breaking of Lorentz symmetry, triggered by the bumblebee vector field, on the usual Einstein-Hilbert theory. Specifically, we consider the Einstein-Hilbert action modified by the bumblebee dynamic field, and evaluate the graviton propagator using an extended basis of Barnes-Rivers tensor projectors, involving the Lorentz-violating vector. Once the propagator is carried out, we proceed with discussing the consistency of the model, writing the dispersion relations, and analyzing causality and unitarity. We verify that this model po…
We study the prelude to black-hole formation using a suspended shell composed of physical matter that fulfills the dominant energy condition. Here, the collapse of the shell is brought to rest when the formation of the horizon is imminent but has not yet occurred. As the main achievement of this work, we obtain the Feynman propagator which connects the interior and the exterior of the shell within two local coordinate patches. It is derived by drawing an analogy to the propagation of light across interfaces that separate regions with different susceptibilities inside a medium. As a first appli…
In the context of conventional quantum field theory, we present a general Lorentz-violating extension of the minimal SU(3) x SU(2) x U(1) standard model including CPT-even and CPT-odd terms. It can be viewed as the low-energy limit of a physically relevant fundamental theory with Lorentz-covariant dynamics in which spontaneous Lorentz violation occurs. The extension has gauge invariance, energy-momentum conservation, and covariance under observer rotations and boosts, while covariance under particle rotations and boosts is broken. The quantized theory is hermitian and power-counting renormaliz…
In this work, we study the higher-derivative massive gravity in $D$-dimensional space-time with the mass term arisen due to a 2-brane embedded in a $4D$ Minkowski spacetime. We consider the effect of a resonance mass term from the DGP braneworld model for the higher-derivative massive gravity. Moreover, we add the gravitational Chern-Simons and Ricci-Cotton terms to this model and evaluate the graviton propagator using a basis of Barnes-Rivers spin projectors. Using the obtained propagator, we proceed with discussing the consistency of the model, writing the dispersion relations, and analyzing…
We investigate the infrared (strong-coupling) regime of SU(N)-Yang-Mills theory on a self-dual background. We present an evaluation of the full effective potential for the field strength invariant F_{μν}F^{μν} from non-perturbative gauge correlation functions and find a non-trivial minimum corresponding to the existence of a dimension four gluon condensate in the vacuum. We also relate the infrared asymptotic form of the beta function of the running background-gauge coupling to the asymptotic behavior of Landau-gauge gluon and ghost propagators. Consistency between both gauges in the infrared …
The relentless efforts of the physics community has not yet availed us the solution of how to unify the Quantum Mechanics with General Relativity, a puzzle that has engaged the minds of the physicists for almost a century. The insufficiency of today's and foreseeable future's technology for a direct reach into the Planck energies at which the fundamental theory, the Quantum Theory of Gravity, lies has lead to the search of the low energy effects of that fundamental Planck level theory irregardless of the details of it. In this thesis, one of the leading candidates of such an exotic effect, tha…
Field quantization in 5D flat and warped space-times with Z$_2$-parity is comparatively examined. We carefully and closely derive 5D position/momentum(P/M) propagators. Their characteristic behaviours depend on the 4D (real world) momentum in relation to the boundary parameter ($l$) and the bulk curvature ($\om$). They also depend on whether the 4D momentum is space-like or time-like. Their behaviours are graphically presented and the Z$_2$ symmetry, the "brane" formation and the singularities are examined. It is shown that the use of absolute functions is important for properly treating the s…
We investigate BRST invariance in Landau gauge Yang-Mills theory with functional methods. To that end, we solve the coupled system of functional renormalisation group equations for the momentum-dependent ghost and gluon propagator, ghost-gluon, and three- and four-gluon vertex dressings. The equations for both, transverse and longitudinal correlation functions are solved self-consistently: all correlation functions are fed back into the loops. Additionally, we also use the Slavnov-Taylor identities for computing the longitudinal correlation functions on the basis of the above results. Then, th…
