The branching ratio (BR) for the decay K^+ \rightarrow π^+ ν\barν is a sensitive probe for new physics. The NA62 experiment at the CERN SPS will measure this BR to within about 10%. To reject the dominant background from channels with final state photons, the large-angle vetoes (LAVs) must detect photons of energy as low as 200 MeV with an inefficiency of less than 10^-4, as well as provide energy and time measurements with resolutions of 10% and 1 ns for 1 GeV photons. The LAV detectors make creative reuse of lead glass blocks recycled from the OPAL electromagnetic calorimeter barrel. We describe the mechanical design and challenges faced during construction, the characterization of the lead glass blocks and solutions adopted for monitoring their performance, and the development of front-end electronics to allow simultaneous time and energy measurements over an extended dynamic range using the time-over-threshold technique. Our results are based on test-beam data and are reproduced by a detailed Monte Carlo simulation that includes the readout chain.
The NA62 experiment is a fixed-target experiment at CERN SPS. The main goal of the experiment is to measure the branching ratio of the ultra-rare kaon decay $K^{+}\toπ^{+}ν\barν$. The NA62 detector allows also to study other rare kaon decays and to search for very weakly coupled particles of MeV-GeV mass-scale. The new ANTI-0 hodoscope is proposed and designed to veto events with charged halo particles entering the decay volume. It is now being assembled at CERN. The detector design, the performance simulation and the results of measurements with cosmic rays and test beams for the individual e…

Precise measurements of the branching ratios for the flavor-changing neutral current decays $K\toπν\barν$ can provide unique constraints on CKM unitarity and, potentially, evidence for new physics. It is important to measure both decay modes, $K^+\toπ^+ν\barν$ and $K_L\toπ^0ν\barν$, since different new physics models affect the rates for each channel differently. The NA62 experiment at the CERN SPS will measure the BR for the charged channel to better than 20%. The BR for the neutral channel has never been measured. We are designing the KLEVER experiment to measure BR($K_L\toπ^0ν\barν$) to $\s…

The GERDA experiment searches for the neutrinoless double beta ($0νββ$) decay in $^{76}$Ge in order to probe whether the neutrino is a Majorana particle and to shed light on the neutrino mass ordering. For investigating such a rare decay it is necessary to minimize the background of the experiment. In Phase II of the GERDA experiment the scintillation light of liquid argon (LAr) is used as an additional background veto. In order to estimate the efficiency of such a LAr veto it has to be known how far the scintillation light, which peaks at 128 nm, can travel within the LAr. A dedicated setup w…

The Backward Angle Neutron Detector (BAND) of CLAS12 detects neutrons emitted at backward angles of $155^\circ$ to $175^\circ$, with momenta between $200$ and $600$ MeV/c. It is positioned 3 meters upstream of the target, consists of $18$ rows and $5$ layers of $7.2$ cm by $7.2$ cm scintillator bars, and read out on both ends by PMTs to measure time and energy deposition in the scintillator layers. Between the target and BAND there is a 2 cm thick lead wall followed by a 2 cm veto layer to suppress gammas and reject charged particles. This paper discusses the component-selection tests and the …
This project is focused on the development of a novel strategy for the precise measurement of beta decay energy spectra. The exact determination of beta spectra has wide implications in the particle and nuclear physics fields: from sterile neutrino searches \cite{Adhikari 2016} to validation of nuclear models of interest for double beta decay searches \cite{Suhonen 2017}, to reactor neutrino experiments. The experimental strategy is focused on the mitigation of the systematic uncertainty in the determination of the spectral shape related to the energy response of the detector. The plan is to u…
We present studies of proton fluxes in the T10 beamline at CERN. A prototype high pressure gas time projection chamber (TPC) was exposed to the beam of protons and other particles, using the 0.8 GeV/c momentum setting in T10, in order to make cross section measurements of low energy protons in argon. To explore the energy region comparable to hadrons produced by GeV-scale neutrino interactions at oscillation experiments, i.e., near 0.1 GeV of kinetic energy, methods of moderating the T10 beam were employed: the dual technique of moderating the beam with acrylic blocks and measuring scattered p…
