Tau leptons play an important role in the physics program in ATLAS. They can be used not only in searches for new phenomena like the Higgs boson or Supersymmetry, or for electroweak measurements but also in detector related studies like the determination of the missing transverse energy scale. Identifying hadronically decaying tau leptons requires good understanding of the detector performance, combining information from calorimeter and tracking detectors. The current status of the tau reconstruction and identification with the ATLAS detector is presented. The identification efficiencies are measured with W -> tau nu events, and found to be consistent with the prediction from Monte Carlo simulations.
The readout systems for the ATLAS silicon trackers and liquid argon calorimeters utilize vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser diodes to communicate between on and off detector readout components. A number of these VCSEL devices have failed well before their expected lifetime. We summarize the failure history and present what has been learned thus far about failure mechanisms and the dependence of the lifetime on environmental conditions.
This paper describes the implementation and performance of a particle flow algorithm applied to 20.2 fb$^{-1}$ of ATLAS data from 8 TeV proton-proton collisions in Run 1 of the LHC. The algorithm removes calorimeter energy deposits due to charged hadrons from consideration during jet reconstruction, instead using measurements of their momenta from the inner tracker. This improves the accuracy of the charged-hadron measurement, while retaining the calorimeter measurements of neutral-particle energies. The paper places emphasis on how this is achieved, while minimising double-counting of charged…
Between 2025 and 2027, some essential components of the CMS (Compact Muon Solenoid) detector - most notably the tracker and the calorimeter endcap - will be upgraded to prepare for HL-LHC (High Luminosity Large Hadron Collider) conditions. The upgraded CMS Outer Tracker and parts of the new CMS High Granularity Calorimeter (HGCAL) will encompass over $50{,}000$ new silicon sensors covering a total area of about $800\,\text{m}^{2}$. The sensor series production requires a dedicated strategy to monitor the quality and stability of the production process. The strategy is based on a test structure…
The understanding of the reconstruction and calibration of electrons and photons is one of the key steps at the start-up of data-taking with ATLAS at the LHC (Large Hadron Collider). The calorimeter cells are electronically calibrated before being clustered. Corrections to local position and energy measurements are applied to take into account the calorimeter geometry. Finally, longitudinal weights are applied to correct for energy loss upstream of the calorimeter. As a last step the Z -> ee events will be used for in-situ calibration using the Z boson mass. The electron identification is base…
The Mu2e experiment at Fermilab will search for the charged lepton flavor violating process of neutrino-less $μ\to e$ coherent conversion in the field of an aluminum nucleus. The detector system consists of a straw tube tracker and a crystal calorimeter made of undoped CsI coupled with Silicon Photomultipliers. The calorimeter was designed to be operable in a harsh environment where about 10 krad/year will be delivered in the …
The separation and reconstructions of charged hadron and neutral hadron from their overlapped showers in electromagnetic calorimeter is very important for the reconstructions of some particles with hadronic decays, for example the tau reconstruction in the searches for the Standard Model and supersymmetric Higgs bosons at the LHC. In this paper, a method combining the shower cluster in electromagnetic calorimeter and the parametric formula for hadron showers, was developed to separate the overlapped showers between charged hadron and neutral hadron. Taking the hadronic decay containing one cha…
The paper discusses new method for electron/pion and muon/pion separation in the Belle II detector at transverse momenta below 0.7 $\mathrm{GeV}/c$, which is essential for efficient measurements of semi-leptonic decays of $B$ mesons with tau lepton in the final state. The method is based on the analysis of patterns in the electromagnetic calorimeter by using a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN).
Triggering on hadronic tau decays is essential for a wide variety of analyses of interesting physics processes at ATLAS. The ATLAS tau trigger combines information from the tracking detectors and calorimeters to identify the signature of hadronically decaying tau leptons. In Run 2 operation expected to start in 2015, the trigger strategies will become more important than ever before. In this paper, the tau trigger performance during Run 1 is summarized and also an overview of the developments of Run 2 tau trigger strategy is presented.
The Mu2e experiment at Fermilab aims at measuring the neutrinoless conversion of a negative muon into an electron and reach a single event sensitivity of 2.5x10^{-17} after three years of data taking. The monoenergetic electron produced in the final state, is detected by a high precision tracker and a crystal calorimeter, all embedded in a large superconducting solenoid (SD) surrounded by a cosmic ray veto system. The calorimeter is complementary to the tracker, allowing an independent trigger and powerful particle identification, while seeding the track reconstruction and contributing to remo…
We present the current stage of research progress towards a one-pass, completely Machine Learning (ML) based imaging calorimeter reconstruction. The model used is based on Graph Neural Networks (GNNs) and directly analyzes the hits in each HGCAL endcap. The ML algorithm is trained to predict clusters of hits originating from the same incident particle by labeling the hits with the same cluster index. We impose simple criteria to assess whether the hits associated as a cluster by the prediction are matched to those hits resulting from any particular individual incident particles. The algorithm …

The detector model consists of a detailed description of the CEM geometry and material in the direction of the incident particle's trajectory, and of the passive material between the tracker and the CEM…
A prototype module for an International Linear Collider (ILC) detector was built, installed, and tested between 2006 and 2009 at CERN and Fermilab as part of the CALICE test beam program, in order to study the possibilities of extending energy sampling behind a hadronic calorimeter and to study the possibilities of providing muon tracking. The "tail catcher/muon tracker" (TCMT) is composed of 320 extruded scintillator strips (dimensions 1000 mm x 50 mm x 5 mm) packaged in 16 one-meter square planes interleaved between steel plates. The scintillator strips were read out with wavelength shifting…
The CMS Detector consists of a large volume silicon tracker immersed in a high four Tesla magnetic field, together with a high resolution/granularity electromagnetic calorimeter and a nearly full solid angle coverage hadronic calorimeter. Particle flow reconstruction provides a global pp-collision event description by exploiting the combined information across all CMS sub-detectors, optimizing the reconstruction and the identification of each particle (photons, electrons, muons, unstable neutral hadrons, charged hadrons and neutral hadrons) in an event. This summary introduces the CMS particle…

The ATLAS Transition Radiation Tracker (TRT) is the outermost of the three sub-systems of the ATLAS Inner Detector at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN. In addition to its tracking capabilities, the TRT provides particle identification (PID) ability through the detection of transition radiation X-ray photons. The latter functionality provides substantial discriminating power between electrons and hadrons in the momentum range from 1 to 200 GeV. In addition, the measurement of an enhancement of signal time length, which is related to high specific energy deposition (dE/dx), can be used to ident…
One-prong tau decays into final states involving kaons are studied with about 161k tau+tau- events collected by the ALEPH detector from 1991 to 1995. Charged kaons are identified by dE/dx measurement, while K0L's are detected through their interaction in calorimeters. Branching ratios are measured for the inclusive mode, B(tau- -> K-Xnu_tau)=(1.52 +- 0.04 +- 0.04)%, where X can be any system of neutral particles, and for the exclusive modes B(tau- to K- nu_tau) = (6.96 =- 0.25 +- 0.14)x 10-3, B(tau- to K- pi0 nu_tau) = (4.44 +- 0.26 +- 0.24)x 10-3, B(tau-to K- pi0 pi0 nu_tau)= (0.56 +- 0.20 +-…
The ATLAS experiment at the LHC is building several detector systems for forward physics studies and to determine the luminosity. The main forward systems consist of a Cerenkov detector called LUCID, a Zero Degree Calorimeter (ZDC) and Roman Pots which will house a scintillating fiber tracker system called ALFA. Here we report some of the forward physics activities that are foreseen in ATLAS together with the status of the related detector systems.
Algorithms based on the particle flow approach are becoming increasingly utilized in collider experiments due to their superior jet energy and missing energy resolution compared to the traditional calorimeter-based measurements. Such methods have been shown to work well in environments with low occupancy of particles per unit of calorimeter granularity. However, at higher instantaneous luminosity or in detectors with coarse calorimeter segmentation, the overlaps of calorimeter energy deposits from charged and neutral particles significantly complicate particle energy reconstruction, reducing t…

The Tile Calorimeter (TileCal) of the ATLAS experiment at the LHC is the central hadronic calorimeter designed for reconstruction of hadrons, jets, tau-particles and missing transverse energy. TileCal is a scintillator-steel sampling calorimeter and it covers the region of $|η| < 1.7$. The scintillation light produced in the scintillator tiles is transmitted by wavelength shifting fibers to photomultiplier tubes (PMTs). The analog signals from the PMTs are amplified, shaped and digitized by sampling the signal every 25 ns. The TileCal frontend electronics reads out the signals produced by abou…

SPD will consist of the superconducting magnetic system, silicon tracker, straw mini-drift tubes tracker, time-of-flight system, electromagnetic "shashlyk"- type calorimeter, muon (range) and local-…
The main irreducible background in the T2K $ν_e$ appearance analysis is the $ν_e$ contamination in the $ν_μ$ beam. In order to quantify this background, a selection for charged-current $ν_e$ interactions in the near detector (ND280) tracker region was developed by combining the particle identification abilities of the time projection chambers and electromagnetic calorimeters. We measured a data/MC ratio of $1.01 \pm 0.10$ for the $ν_e$ component of the beam which, is an important confirmation of our predictions of the expected backgrounds. In 2014 the T2K experiment reversed the polarity of th…

We show that a detector placed near a beta-beam storage ring can probe lepton number violating interactions, as predicted by supersymmetric theories with R-parity non-conservation. In the presence of such interactions, nu_tau can be produced during beta-decay leading to tau leptons through weak interactions. Alternatively, electron neutrinos from beta-decay of radioactive ions can produce tau leptons in a nearby detector through these interactions. The muons from the decay of these tau leptons can be readily identified in a small iron calorimeter detector and will signal violation of R-parity.
When testing and calibrating particle detectors in a test beam, accurate tracking information independent of the detector being tested is extremely useful during the offline analysis of the data. A general-purpose Silicon Beam Tracker (SBT) was constructed with an active area of 32.0 x 32.0 mm2 to provide this capability for the beam calibration of the Cosmic Ray Energetics And Mass (CREAM) calorimeter. The tracker consists of two modules, each comprised of two orthogonal layers of 380 μm thick silicon strip sensors. In one module each layer is a 64-channel AC-coupled single-sided silicon stri…
A search for magnetic monopoles and high-electric-charge objects is presented using 34.4 fb$^{-1}$ of 13 TeV $pp$ collision data collected by the ATLAS detector at the LHC during 2015 and 2016. The considered signature is based upon high ionization in the transition radiation tracker of the inner detector associated with a pencil-shape energy deposit in the electromagnetic calorimeter. The data were collected by a dedicated trigger based on the tracker high-threshold hit capability. The results are interpreted in models of Drell-Yan pair production of stable particles with two spin hypotheses …

The Compact Linear Collider (CLIC) is a concept for a future $e^{+}e^{-}$ linear collider with a center-of-mass energy of up to 3 TeV. The design of a CLIC experiment is driven by the requirements related to the physics goals, as well as by the experimental conditions. For example, the short time between two bunch crossings of 0.5 ns and the backgrounds due to beamstrahlung have direct impact on the design of a CLIC experiment. The Silicon Detector (SiD) is one of the concepts currently being discussed as a possible detector for the International Linear Collider (ILC). In this thesis we develo…

Coping with the high instantaneous and integrated luminosity will require many changes to the ATLAS detector. The designs are developing rapidly for an all-new inner-tracker, significant changes in the calorimeter and muon systems, as well as improved triggers. This article summarizes the environment expected at the HL-LHC and the status of various improvemen…
The CMS apparatus was identified, a few years before the start of the LHC operation at CERN, to feature properties well suited to particle-flow (PF) reconstruction: a highly-segmented tracker, a fine-grained electromagnetic calorimeter, a hermetic hadron calorimeter, a strong magnetic field, and an excellent muon spectrometer. A fully-fledged PF reconstruction algorithm tuned to the CMS detector was therefore developed and has been consistently used in physics analyses for the first time at a hadron collider. For each collision, the comprehensive list of final-state particles identified and re…
Within the framework of the $μν$SSM, a displaced dilepton signal is expected at the LHC from the decay of a tau left sneutrino as the lightest supersymmetric particle (LSP) with a mass in the range $45 - 100$ GeV. We compare the predictions of this scenario with the ATLAS search for long-lived particles using displaced lepton pairs in $pp$ collisions, considering an optimization of the trigger requirements by means of a high level trigger that exploits tracker information. The analysis is carried out in the general case of three families of right-handed neutrino superfields, where all the neut…
The $K_S \to 3 π^0$ decay is a pure CP violating process which, assuming CPT invariance, allows one to investigate direct CP violation. This decay has not been observed so far, and the best upper limit on the branching ratio $BR(K_S to 3π^0) < 1.2 \cdot 10^{-7}$ is two orders of magnitude larger than predictions based on the Standard Model: $BR(K_S \to 3π^0) \sim 2 \cdot 10^{-9}$. In this article we present the search for the $K_S \to 3π^0$ decay performed with the KLOE detector operating at the DAFNE Φ-factory at the Frascati Laboratory. We describe the analysis techniques used in the backgro…
Long lived gluinos are the trademark of split supersymmetry. They form R-hadrons that, when charged, efficiently lose energy in matter via ionisation. Independent of R-spectroscopy and initial hadronization, a fraction of R-hadrons become charged while traversing a detector. This results in a large number of stopped gluinos at present and future detectors. For a 300 GeV gluino, $10^6$ will stop each year in LHC detectors, while several hundred stop in detectors during Run II at the Tevatron. The subsequent decays of stopped gluinos produce distinctive depositions of energy in calorimeters with…
A high-density calorimeter, consisting of magnetized iron planes interleaved by RPCs, as tracking and timing devices, is a good candidate for a next generation experiment on atmospheric neutrinos. Moreover, the experimental method will enable to measure the oscillation parameters from the modulation of the L/E spectrum ($ν_μ$ disappe…
The version 3.0 of the DELPHES fast-simulation is presented. The goal of DELPHES is to allow the simulation of a multipurpose detector for phenomenological studies. The simulation includes a track propagation system embedded in a magnetic field, electromagnetic and hadron calorimeters, and a muon identification system. The reconstruction of electron tracks from photons that convert to electrons in the CMS tracker is also described, as is the optimization of the photon energy reconstruction and its accurate modelling in simulation, in the analysis of the Higgs bos…
Interest in new physics models including so-called hidden sectors has increased in recent years as a result of anomalies from astrophysical observations. The Heavy Photon Search (HPS) experiment proposed at Jefferson Lab will look for a mediator of a new force, a GeV-scale massive U(1) vector boson, the Heavy Photon, which acquires a weak coupling to electrically charged matter through kinetic mixing. The HPS detector, a large acceptance forward spectrometer based on a dipole magnet, consists of a silicon tracker-vertexer, a lead-tungstate electromagnetic calorimeter, and a muon detector. HPS …
After the successful LHC operation at the center-of-mass energies of 7 and 8 TeV in 2010-2012, plans are actively advancing for a series of upgrades of the accelerator, culminating roughly ten years from now in the high-luminosity LHC (HL-LHC) project, delivering of the order of five times the LHC nominal instantaneous luminosity along with luminosity leveling. The final goal is to extend the dataset from about few hundred fb$^{-1}$ to 3000 fb$^{-1}$ by around 2035 for ATLAS and CMS. In parallel, the experiments need to be kept lockstep with the accelerator to accommodate running beyond the no…
We point out that the LDMX (Light Dark Matter eXperiment) detector design, conceived to search for sub-GeV dark matter, will also have very advantageous characteristics to pursue electron-nucleus scattering measurements of direct relevance to the neutrino program at DUNE and elsewhere. LDMX thus could provide (semi)exclusive cross section measurem…
