We explore the consequences of a detection of primordial tensor fluctuations for general single-field models of inflation. Using the effective theory of inflation, we propose a generalization of the Lyth bound. Our bound applies to all single-field models with two-derivative kinetic terms for the scalar fluctuations and is always stronger than the corresponding bound for slow-roll models. This shows that non-trivial dynamics can't evade the Lyth bound. We also present a weaker, but completely universal bound that holds whenever the Null Energy Condition (NEC) is satisfied at horizon crossing.
We discuss a general bound on the possibility to realise inflation in any minimal supergravity with F-terms. The derivation crucially depends on the sGoldstini, the scalar field directions that are singled out by spontaneous supersymmetry breaking. The resulting bound involves both slow-roll parameters and the geometry of the Kähler manifold of the chiral scalars. We analyse the inflationary implications of this bound, and in particular discuss to what extent the requirements of single field and slow-roll can both be met in F-term inflation.
We study to what extent the spectral index $n_s$ and the tensor-to-scalar ratio $r$ determine the field excursion $Δϕ$ during inflation. We analyse the possible degeneracy of $Δϕ$ by comparing three broad classes of inflationary models, with different dependence on the number of e-foldings $N$, to benchmark models of chaotic inflation with monomial potentials. The classes discussed cover a large set of inflationary single field models. We find that the field range is not uniquely determined for any value of $(n_s, r)$; one can have the same predictions as chaotic inflation and a very different…
We revisit D-term inflation with the bounds of the cosmic string tension from gravitational wave observations and consider the possible deviation of the spectral index compared with the $Λ$CDM model in light of prerecombination resolutions of the Hubble tension. D-term inflation requires very small coupling constants under these constraints. We show that natural coupling constants ($g=λ=0.1$) can be achieved in the case of D-term inflation on the brane.
The BICEP2 observation of a large tensor-to-scalar ratio, $r = 0.20^{+0.07}_{-0.05}$, implies that the inflaton $ϕ$ in single-field inflation models must satisfy $ϕ\sim 10M_{Pl}$ in order to produce sufficient inflation. This is a problem if interaction terms suppressed by the Planck scale impose a bound $ϕ\; ^{<}_{\sim} \; M_{Pl}$. Here we consider whether it is possible to have successful sub-Planckian inflation in the case of two-field inflation. The trajectory in field space cannot be radial if the effective single-field inflaton is to satisfy the Lyth bound. By considering a complex field…
We propose a novel mechanism for enhancing the primordial gravitational waves without significantly affecting the curvature perturbations produced during inflation. This is achieved due to non-linear sourcing of resonantly amplified scalar field fluctuations. Our result is an explicit scale-dependent counter-example of the famous Lyth bound, which opens up a promising perspective of producing detectable inflationary tensor modes with low-scale inflation and a sub-Planckian field excursion. We explicitly demonstrate the testability of our mechanism with upcoming Cosmic Microwave Background B-mo…
We locally reconstruct the inflationary potential by using the current constraints on $r$ and $n_{\rm s}$ from BICEP2 data. Assuming small and negligible $α_{\rm s}$, the inflationary potential is approximately linear in $Δϕ\sim M_{\rm pl}$ range but becomes non-linear in $Δϕ\sim 10 M_{\rm pl}$ range. However if we vary the value of $α_{\rm s}$ within the range given by constraints from {\it Planck} measurement, the local reconstruction is only valid in the range of $Δϕ\sim 0.4 M_{\rm pl}$, which challenges the inflationary background from the point of view of effective field theory. We show t…
We present a mechanism for realizing hybrid inflation using two axion fields with a purely non-perturbatively generated scalar potential. The structure of scalar potential is highly constrained by the discrete shift symmetries of the axions. We show that harmonic hybrid inflation generates observationally viable slow-roll inflation for a wide range of initial conditions. This is possible while accommodating certain UV arguments favoring constraints $f\lesssim M_{\rm P}$ and $Δϕ_{60}\lesssim M_{\rm P}$ on the axion periodicity and slow-roll field range, respectively. We discuss controlled $\mat…
We show that both the baryon asymmetry of the Universe and the dark matter abundance can be explained within a single framework that makes use of maximally helical hypermagnetic fields produced during pseudoscalar inflation and the chiral anomaly in the Standard Model. We consider a minimal asymmetric dark matter model free from anomalies and constraints. We find that the observed baryon and the dark matter abundances are achieved for a wide range of inflationary parameters, and the dark matter mass ranges between 7-15 GeV. The novelty of our mechanism stems from the fact that the same source …
An attractive candidate for the inflaton is an axion slowly rolling down a flat potential protected by a perturbative shift symmetry. Realisations of this idea within large field, natural and monomial inflation have been disfavoured by observations and are difficult to embed in string theory. We show that subleading, but significant non-perturbative corrections can superimpose sharp cliffs and gentle plateaus into the potential, whose overall effect is to enhance the number of e-folds of inflation. Sufficient e-folds are therefore achieved for smaller field ranges compared to the potential wit…
We provide strong evidence for universality of the inflationary field range: given an accurate measurement of $(n_s,r)$, one can infer $Δϕ$ in a model-independent way in the sub-Planckian regime for a range of universality classes of inflationary models. Both the tensor-to-scalar ratio as well as the spectral tilt are essential for the field range. Given the Planck constraints on $n_s$, the Lyth bound is strengthened by two orders of magnitude: whereas the original bound gives a sub-Planckian field range for $r \lesssim 2 \cdot 10^{-3}$, we find that $n=0.96$ brings this down to $r \lesssim 2 …
We study the de Sitter (dS) swampland conjecture in the Dirac-Born-Infeld (DBI) inflation model. We obtain the dS swampland bound for the relativistic regime using Bousso's entropy bound argument and proper distance. It restricts $m_{\rm Pl}\nabla V/V$ by some positive constant depending on warping and the field range. In the specific case of the DBI model driven by the quadratic potential, the model-dependent backreaction argument is interpreted as a natural bound for the slow-roll parameter. This shows that quasi-dS spacetime in the DBI model is a result of tuning.
Quintessential inflation refers to an attempt to unify inflation and late-time cosmic acceleration using a single scalar field. In this letter we consider two different classes of quintessential inflation, one of which is based upon a Lagrangian with non-canonical kinetic term $k^2(ϕ)\partial^μϕ\partial_μϕ$ and a steep exponential potential while the second class uses the concept of steep brane world inflation. We show that in both cases the Lyth bound can be evaded, despite the large tensor-to-scalar ratio of perturbations. The post-inflationary dynamics is consistent with nucleosynthesis con…
We consider an initial condition problem in a nearly quadratic chaotic inflation model in supergravity. We introduce shift symmetry breaking not only in the superpotential but also in the Kahler potential. In this model the inflaton potential is nearly quadratic for inflaton field values around the Planck scale, but deviates from the quadratic one for larger field values. As a result, the prediction on the tensor-to-scalar ratio can be smaller than that of a purely quadratic model. Due to the shift symmetry breaking in the Kahler potential, the inflaton potential becomes steep for large inflat…
Using the latest observational data we obtain a lower bound on the initial value of the quintessence field in thawing quintessence models of dark energy. For potentials of the form V(ϕ) ϕ^{\pm2} we find that the initial value |ϕ_i|>7x10^{18}\gev. We then relate ϕ_i to the duration of inflation by assuming that the initial value of the quintessence field is determined by quantum fluctuations of the quintessence field during inflation. From the lower bound on $ϕ_i$ we obtain a lower bound on the number of e-foldings of inflation, namely, N>2x10^{11}. We obtain similar bounds for other power law …
By incorporating both the tensor-to-scalar ratio and the measured value of the spectral index, we set a bound on solo small field inflation of $Δϕ/ m_{Pl} \geq 1.00 \sqrt{r/0.1}$. Unlike previous bounds which require monotonic $ε_V,$ $|η_V| <1$, and 60 e-folds of inflation, the bound remains valid for non-monotonic $ε_V$, $|η_V| \gtrsim 1$, and for inflation which occurs only over the 8 e-folds which have been observed on the cosmic microwave background. The negative value of the spectral index over the observed 8 e-folds is what makes the bound strong; we illustrate this by surveying single f…
The presence of a light vector field coupled to a scalar field during inflation makes a distinct prediction: the observed correlation functions of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) become statistically anisotropic. We study the implications of the current bound on statistical anisotropy derived from the Planck 2013 CMB temperature data for such a model. The previous calculations based on the attractor solution indicate that the magnitude of anisotropy in the power spectrum is proportional to $N^2$, where $N$ is the number of $e$-folds of inflation counted from the end of inflation. In this…
Protected by an approximate shift symmetry, axions are well motivated candidates for driving cosmic inflation. Their generic coupling to the Chern-Simons term of any gauge theory gives rise to a wide range of potentially observable signatures, including equilateral non-Gaussianites in the CMB, chiral gravitational waves in the range of direct gravitational wave detectors and primordial black holes (PBHs). In this paper we revisit these predictions for axion inflation models non-minimally coupled to gravity. Contrary to the case of minimally coupled models which typically predict scale-invarian…
We revisit the renormalizable polynomial inflection point model of inflation, focusing on the small field scenario which can be treated fully analytically. In particular, the running of the spectral index is predicted to be $α= -1.43 \times 10^{-3} +5.56 \times 10^{-5} \left(N_{\rm CMB}-65 \right)$, which might be tested in future. We also analyze reheating through perturbative inflaton decays to either fermionic or bosonic final states via a trilinear coupling. The lower bound on the reheating temperature from successful Big Bang nucleosynthesis gives lower bounds for these couplings; on the …
In this paper we provide an accurate bound on primordial gravitational waves, i.e. tensor-to-scalar ratio $(r)$ for a general class of single-field models of inflation where inflation occurs always below the Planck scale, and the field displacement during inflation remains sub-Planckian. If inflation has to make connection with the real particle physics framework then it must be explained within an effective field theory description where it can be trustable below the UV cut-off of the scale of gravity. We provide an analytical estimation and estimate the largest possible $r$, i.e. $r\leq 0.12…
We study models of hybrid inflation in the framework of supergravity with superconformal matter. F-term hybrid inflation is not viable since the inflaton acquires a large tachyonic mass. On the contrary, D-term hybrid inflation can successfully account for the amplitude of the primordial power spectrum. It is a two-field inflation model which, depending on parameters, yields values of the scalar spectral index down to n_s ~ 0.96. Generically, there is a tension between a small spectral index and the cosmic string bound albeit, within 2-sigma uncertainty, the current observational bounds can be…
Warm inflation has been noted previously as a possible way to implement inflationary models compatible with the dS swampland bounds. But often in these discussions the heat bath dynamics is kept largely unspecified. We point out that the recently introduced Minimal Warm Inflation of arXiv:1910.07525, where an axionic coupling of the inflaton leads to an explicit model for the thermal bath, yields models of inflation that can easily fit cosmological observations while satisfying de Sitter swampland bounds, as well as the swampland distance bound and trans-Planckian censorship.
We consider ${\cal{R}}^2$-inflation in Palatini gravity, in the presence of scalar fields coupled to gravity. These theories, in the Einstein frame, and for one scalar field $h$, share common features with $K$ - inflation models. We apply this formalism for the study of single-field inflationary models, whose potentials are monomials, $ V \sim h^{n} $, with $ n $ a positive even integer. We also study the Higgs model non-minimally coupled to gravity. With ${\cal{R}}^2$-terms coupled to gravity as $\sim α{\cal{R}}^2 $, with $α$ constant, the instantaneous reheating temperature $T_{ins}$, is bou…
In this paper, we show that single-field chaotic inflation on the brane with the potential $V=a ϕ^p$ is compatible with the Swampland criteria. The spectral index and the running spectral index are within experimental bounds for $0<p \leq 2$. The tensor to scalar ratio is within observational bounds if $p \lesssim \mathcal{O}(1)$.
We study the bounds on tensor wave in a class of twisted inflation models where $D(4+2k)$-branes are wrapped on cycles in the compact manifold and wrap the KK-direction in the corresponding effective field theory. While the lower bound is found to be analogous to that in Type IIB models of brane inflation, the upper bound turns out to be significantly different. This is argued for a range of values for the parameter $g_s M$ satisfying the self-consistency relation and the WMAP data. Further, we observe that the wrapped $D8$-brane appears to be the most attractive from a cosmological perspectiv…
In [arXiv:1102.1513] we introduced an inflationary scenario, Non-Abelian Gauge Field Inflation or gauge-flation for short, in which slow-roll inflation is driven by non-Abelian gauge field minimally coupled to gravity. We present a more detailed analysis, both numerical and analytical, of the gauge-flation. By studying the phase diagrams of the theory, we show that getting enough number of e-folds during a slow-roll inflation is fairly robust to the choice of initial gauge field values. In addition, we present a detailed analysis of the cosmic perturbation theory in gauge-flation which has man…
The recently suggested Festina-Lente (FL) bound provides a lower bound on the masses of ${\rm U(1)}$ charged particles in terms of the positive vacuum energy. Since the charged particle masses in the Standard Model (SM) are generated by the Higgs mechanism, the FL bound provides a testbed of consistent Higgs potentials in the current dark energy-dominated universe as well as during inflation. We study the implications of the FL bound on the UV behavior of the Higgs potential for a miniscule vacuum energy, as in the current universe. We also present values of the Hubble parameter and the Higgs …
We demonstrate that the strict upper bounds on the energy scale of inflation and on the tensor-to-scalar ratio can be somewhat relaxed if we assume that - after an initial period of slow rolling when scales probed today in CMB experiments exit the Hubble radius - the equation of state of the background changes to correspond to an almost marginally accelerating universe. Constructing an actual model in which this happens appears, however, to be unnatural.
It has been suggested that low energy effective field theories should satisfy given conditions in order to be successfully embedded into string theory. In the case of a single canonically normalized scalar field this translates into conditions on its potential and the derivatives thereof. In this Letter we revisit stochastic models of small field inflation and study the compatibility of the swampland constraints with entropy considerations. We show that stochastic inflation either violates entropy bounds or the swampland criterium on the slope of the scalar field potential. Furthermore, we ill…
If the tensor-to-scalar ratio $r$ of cosmological perturbations takes a large value $r\sim 0.1$, which may be inferred by recent BICEP2 result, we can hope to determine thermal history, in particular, the reheating temperature, $T_R$, after inflation by space-based laser interferometers. It is shown that upgraded and upshifted versions of DECIGO may be able to determine $T_R$ if it lies in the range $6\times 10^6< T_R < 5\times 10^7$GeV and $3\times 10^7<T_R<2\times 10^8$GeV, respectively. Although these ranges include predictions of some currently plausible inflation models, since each specif…
We study the Brownian motion of a field where there are boundaries in the inflationary field space. Both the field and the boundary undergo Brownian motions with the amplitudes of the noises determined by the Hubble expansion rate of the corresponding dS spacetime. This setup mimics models of inflation in which curvature perturbation is induced from inhomogeneities generated at the surface of end of inflation. The cases of the drift dominated regime as well as the diffusion dominated regime are studied in details. We calculate the first hitting probabilities as well as the mean number of e-fol…
We study if eternal inflation is realized while satisfying the recently proposed string Swampland criteria concerning the range of scalar field excursion, $|Δϕ| < \mathcal{D} \cdot M_{\rm P}$, and the potential gradient, $|\nabla V| > c \cdot V/M_{\rm P}$, where $\mathcal{D}$ and $c$ are constants of order unity, and $M_{\rm P}$ is the reduced Planck mass. We find that only the eternal inflation of chaotic type is possible for $c \sim {\cal O}(0.01)$ and $1/\mathcal{D} \sim {\cal O}(0.01)$, and that the Hubble parameter during the eternal inflation is parametrically close to the Planck scale, …
We systematically show that in potential driven generalized G-inflation models, quantum corrections coming from new physics at the strong coupling scale can be avoided, while producing observable tensor modes. The effective action can be approximated by the tree level action, and as a result, these models are internally consistent, despite the fact that we introduced new mass scales below the energy scale of inflation. Although observable tensor modes are produced with sub-strong coupling scale field excursions, this is not an evasion of the Lyth bound, since the models include higher-derivati…
The no-boundary wave function of quantum gravity usually assigns only very small probability to long periods of inflation. This was a reason to doubt about the no-boundary wave function to explain the observational universe. We study the no-boundary proposal in the context of multi-field inflation to see whether the number of fields changes the situation. For a simple model, we find that indeed the no-boundary wave function can give higher probability for sufficient inflation, but the number of fields involved has to be very high.
If the inflationary era is preceded by a radiation dominated era in which the inflaton too was in thermal equilibrium at some very early time then the CMB data places an upper bound on the comoving temperature of the (decoupled) inflaton quanta. In addition, if one considers models of "just enough" inflation, where the number of e-foldings of inflation is just enough to solve the horizon and flatness problems, then we get a lower bound on the Hubble parameter during inflation, $H_{\rm inf}$, which is in severe conflict with the upper bound from tensor perturbations. Alternatively, imposing the…
It has recently been shown that in single field slow-roll inflation the total volume cannot grow by a factor larger than e^(S_dS/2) without becoming infinite. The bound is saturated exactly at the phase transition to eternal inflation where the probability to produce infinite volume becomes non zero. We show that the bound holds sharply also in any space-time dimensions, when arbitrary higher-dimensional operators are included and in the multi-field inflationary case. The relation with the entropy of de Sitter and the universality of the bound strengthen the case for a deeper holographic inter…
We introduce the relation between the holographic entropy bounds and the inflationary universe. First the holographic entropy bounds for radiation-dominated universe, radiation-dominated universe with a positive cosmological constant are introduced. For an exact de Sitter phase, we use the maximal entropy bound. We classify the inflation based on the quasi-de Sitter spacetime into three steps: slow-roll period of inflation, epoch of reheating, and radiation-dominated era. Then we study how to apply three entropy bounds to the three steps of the inflation. Finally we discuss our results.
The quantum origin of cosmological primordial perturbations is a cornerstone framework in the interplay between gravity and quantum physics. In this paper we study the mutual information between two spatial regions in a radiation-dominated universe filled by a curvature perturbation field in a squeezed state. We find an enhancement with respect to the usual mutual information of the Minkowski vacuum due to momentum modes affected by particle production during inflation. This result supports our previous claim of the existence of long-range correlations between Primordial Black Holes (PBH) at f…
Models of inflation involving non-Abelian gauge field backgrounds can produce gravitational waves at an observable level with a preferred handedness. This asymmetry comes about because the non-Abelian background generates parity-violation in the action for perturbations. In the specific model we study, Chromo-Natural Inflation, these gravitational waves can be produced at observable levels even when no field makes a super-Planckian field excursion, thus evading a common formulation of the Lyth bound. Unfortunately, when considered in concert with the scalar fluctuations, this chiral enhancemen…
Using the fact that we only observe those modes which exit the Hubble horizon during inflation, one can calculate the entanglement entropy of such long-wavelength perturbations by tracing out unobservable sub-Hubble fluctuations they are coupled to. On requiring that this perturbative entanglement entropy, which increases with time, obey the covariant entropy bound for an accelerating background, we find an upper bound on the duration of inflation. This presents a new perspective on the (meta-)stability of de Sitter spacetime and an associated lifetime for it.
The refined de Sitter derivative conjecture provides constraints to potentials that are low energy effective theories of quantum gravity. It can give direct bounds on inflationary scenarios and determine whether the theory is in the Landscape or the Swampland. We consider the `Higgs inflation' scenario taking the refined de Sitter derivative conjecture into account. Obtaining the critical lines for the potential, we find a conjecture parameter space in which the `Higgs inflation' is to be in the Landscape. Comparing with the model independent observational bounds from recent data we find that …
We show that density perturbations seeded by the inflaton can be suppressed when having additional light degrees of freedom contributing to the production of perturbations. The inflaton fluctuations affect the light field dynamics by modulating the length of the inflationary period, hence produce additional density perturbations in the post-inflationary era. Such perturbations can cancel those generated during inflation as both originate from the same inflaton fluctuations. This allows production of large gravitational waves from small-field inflation, which is normally forbidden by the Lyth b…
We demonstrate that the gravity wave background amplitude implies a robust upper bound on the ratio: λ/ H^{-1} < e^60, where λis the proper wavelength of fluctuations of interest and H^{-1} is the horizon at the end of inflation. The bound holds as long as the energy density of the universe does not drop faster than radiation subsequent to inflation. This limit implies that the amount of expansion between the time the scales of interest leave the horizon and the end of inflation, denoted by e^N, is also bounded from above, by about e^60 times a factor that involves an integral over the first s…
We examine the regime of validity of $N$-point spectra predictions of single field inflation models that invoke transient periods of non-adiabatic evolution. Such models generate oscillatory features in these spectra spanning frequencies up to the inverse time scale of the transient feature. To avoid strong coupling of fluctuations in these theories this scale must be at least $\sim 10^{-2}/c_s$ of the Hubble time during inflation, where $c_s$ is the inflaton sound speed. We show that, in such models, the signal-to-noise ratio of the bispectrum is bounded from above by that of the power spectr…
The position of a mobile D-3 brane moving towards a stack of localized D-5 branes has been studied as a candidate driving inflation in the warm inflationary scenario. We compare the results obtained by considering the dissipation parameter $Γ$ as an arbitrary function of only the inflaton field and a particular form derived by Bastro-Gil et al \cite{Berera8}. We find that the observables remain well within the recent observational constraint for a wide range of model parameters for the first case whereas the spectral index in the later case is always predicted blue, other cosmological observab…
For any given momentum transfer, gravitational interactions have a strength set by a characteristic scale $M_*$ inferred from amplitudes calculated in an effective theory with a strong coupling scale $M_{**}$. These are in general different from each other and $M_{\rm pl}$, the macroscopic strength of gravity as determined by (laboratory scale) Cavendish experiments. During single field inflation, $M_*$ can differ from $M_{\rm pl}$ due to the presence of any number of (hidden) universally coupled species between laboratory and inflationary scales. Although this has no effect on dimensionless (…
Generically, the gravitational-wave or tensor-mode contribution to the primordial curvature spectrum of inflation is tiny if the field-range of the inflaton is much smaller than the Planck scale. We show that this pessimistic conclusion is naturally avoided in a rather broad class of small-field models. More specifically, we consider models where an axion-like shift symmetry keeps the inflaton potential flat (up to non-perturbative cosine-shaped modulations), but inflation nevertheless ends in a waterfall-regime, as is typical for hybrid inflation. In such hybrid natural inflation scenarios (e…
We investigate the relationship between the holographic temperature bound and the slow-roll inflation. For this purpose we introduce the holographic temperature bound for a radiation matter :$T \ge T_{\rm H}$. Here $T_{\rm H}$ is the Hubble temperature which arises from the cosmological holographic description of for a radiation-dominated universe. For the quasi-de Sitter phase of slow-roll inflation, we find that the holographic temperature bound of $T_{\rm GH} \ge T_{\rm H}$ is guaranteed with the Gibbons-Hawking temperature $T_{\rm GH}$. When $T_{\rm GH}= T_{\rm H}$, inflation ends.
We examine the conditions under which a perturbative expansion around an inflating background is valid. When inflation is driven by a single field with a general sound speed, we find a lower limit on the sound speed related to the amplitude of the inflationary power spectrum. Generalizing the sound speed constraints to include scale dependence can limit the number of e-folds obtained in the perturbative regime and restrict otherwise apparently viable models. We also show that for models with a low sound speed, eternal inflation cannot occur in the perturbative regime.
In this short note we clarify the role of the boundary terms in the calculation of the leading order tree-level bispectrum in a fairly general minimally coupled single field inflationary model, where the inflaton's Lagrangian is a general function of the scalar field and its first derivatives. This includes k-inflation, DBI-inflation and standard kinetic term inflation as particular cases. These boundary terms appear when simplifying the third order action by using integrations by parts. We perform the calculation in the comoving gauge obtaining explicitly all total time derivative interaction…
The possibility of thermally induced initial density perturbations in inflationary cosmology is examined. The fluctuation dynamics of a scalar field plus thermal bath system during slow roll is described by a Langevin-like equation. Fluctuation-dissipation arguments show that for a wide parameter range within the standard inflation model, the thermal fluctuations of the scalar field can dominate its quantum fluctuations. The initial amplitude of density perturbations is found to lie in a range which is consistent with the recent observations of cosmic temperature fluctuations.
We apply the holographic principle during the inflationary stage of our universe. Where necessary, we illustrate the analysis in the case of new and extended inflation which, together, typify generic models of inflation. We find that in the models of extended inflation type, and perhaps of new inflation type also, the holographic principle leads to a lower bound on the density fluctuations.
We present a simple effective field theory formulation of a general family of single field flux monodromy models for which strong coupling effects at large field values can flatten the potential and activate operators with higher powers of derivatives. These models are radiatively and non-perturbatively stable and can easily sustain $\ga 60$ efolds of inflation. The dynamics combines features of both large field chaotic inflation and $k$-inflation, both of which can suppress the tensor amplitude. Reducing the tensor-scalar ratio below the observational bound $r \lesssim 0.1$ while keeping the …
In an approach to noncommutative gauge theories, where the full noncommutative behavior is delimited by the presence of the UV and IR cutoffs, we consider the possibility of describing a system at a temperature T in a box of size L. Employing a specific form of UV/IR relationship inherent in such an approach of restrictive noncommutativity, we derive, for a given temperature T, an upper bound on the parameter of spacetime noncommutativity Lambda_NC ~ |theta|^{-1/2}. Considering such epochs in the very early universe which are expected to reflect spacetime noncommutativity to a quite degree, li…
We derive lower bounds for the Higgs-curvature coupling from vacuum stability during inflation in three inflationary models: quadratic and quartic chaotic inflation, and Starobinsky-like power-law inflation. In contrast to most previous studies we take the time-dependence of the Hubble rate into account both in the geometry of our past light-cone and in the Higgs effective potential, which is approximated with three-loop renormalisation group improvement supplemented with one-loop curvature corrections. We find that in all three models, the lower bound is $ξ\gtrsim 0.051\ldots 0.066$ depending…
Measuring the primordial power spectrum on small scales is a powerful tool in inflation model building, yet constraints from Cosmic Microwave Background measurements alone are insufficient to place bounds stringent enough to be appreciably effective. For the very small scale spectrum, those which subtend angles of less than 0.3 degrees on the sky, an upper bound can be extracted from the astrophysical constraints on the possible production of primordial black holes in the early universe. A recently discovered observational by-product of an enhanced power spectrum on small scales, induced gravi…
We study the effects of the interaction terms between the inflaton fields on the inflationary dynamics in multi-field models. With power law type potential and interactions, the total number of e-folds may get considerably reduced and can lead to unacceptably short period of inflation. Also we point out that this can place a bound on the characteristic scale of the underlying theory such as string theory. Using a simple multi-field chaotic inflation model from string theory, the string scale is constrained to be larger than the scale of grand unified theory.
Based on random matrix theory, we compute the likelihood of saddles and minima in a class of random potentials that are softly bounded from above and below, as required for the validity of low energy effective theories. Imposing this bound leads to a random mass matrix with non-zero mean of its entries. If the dimensionality of field-space is large, inflation is rare, taking place near a saddle point (if at all), since saddles are more likely than minima or maxima for common values of the potential. Due to the boundedness of the potential, the latter become more ubiquitous for rare low/large v…
We study how both the swampland distance conjecture and the Lyth bound affect the parameter space of multi-field models of inflation. A generic feature of multi-field inflation is that the geodesic distance $\left[Δϕ\right]_\text{G}$ separating any two points laying along the inflationary trajectory differs from the non-geodesic distance $\left[Δϕ\right]_\text{NG}$ traversed by the inflaton between those points. These distances must respect a relation of the form $\left[Δϕ\right]_\text{G} = f\left(\left[Δϕ\right]_\text{NG}\right) \leq \left[Δϕ\right]_\text{NG}$, where $f$ is a function determi…
