We derive a general pattern of the nonexponential, two-power-law relaxation from the compound subordination theory of random processes applied to anomalous diffusion. The subordination approach is based on a coupling between the very large jumps in physical and operational times. It allows one to govern a scaling for small and large times independently. Here we obtain explicitly the relaxation function, the kinetic equation and the susceptibility expression applicable to the range of experimentally observed power-law exponents which cannot be interpreted by means of the commonly known Havriliak-Negami fitting function. We present a novel two-power relaxation law for this range in a convenient frequency-domain form and show its relationship to the Havriliak-Negami one.
The non-exponential relaxation is shown to result from subordination by inverse tempered α-stable processes. The main feature of tempered α-stable processes is a finiteness of their moments, and the class of random processes includes ordinary α-stable processes as a particular case. Starting with the Cole-Cole response this subordination approach establishes its direct link with the Cole-Davidson law. We derive the relaxation function describing the tempered relaxation. The meaning of the empirical response function is clarified.
In this paper we analyze a coupling between the very large jumps in physical and operational times as applied to anomalous diffusion. The approach is based on subordination of a skewed Levy-stable process by its inverse to get two types of operational time - the spent and the residual waiting time, respectively. The studied processes have different properties which display both subdiffusive and superdiffusive features of anomalous diffusion underlying the two-power-law relaxation patterns.
The ergodicity breaking parameter is a measure for the heterogeneity among different trajectories of one ensemble. In this report this parameter is calculated for fractional Brownian motion with a random change of time scale, often called "subordination". We proceed to show that this quantity is the same as the known CTRW case.
We derive general properties of anomalous diffusion and nonexponential relaxation from the theory of tempered α-stable processes. Its most important application is to overcome the infinite-moment difficulty for the α-stable random operational time τ. The tempering results in the existence of all moments of τ. The subordination by the inverse tempered α-stable process provides diffusion(relaxation) that occupies an intermediate place between subdiffusion (Cole-Cole law) and normal diffusion (exponential law). Here we obtain explicitly the Fokker-Planck equation, the mean square displacement and…
The stochastic motion in a nonhomogeneous medium with traps is studied and diffusion properties of that system are discussed. The particle is subjected to a stochastic stimulation obeying a general Lévy stable statistics and experiences long rests due to traps the density of which depends on the position. The memory is taken into account by subordination of that process to a random time; then the subordination equation is position-dependent. The problem is approximated by means of a decoupling of the trap geometry and memory and exactly solved for a power-law trap density, corresponding to a f…
We use the two-time scale subordination in order to describe dynamical processes in continuous media with a long-term memory. Our consideration touches two physical examples in detail. First we study a temporal evolution of the species concentration for the trapping reaction in which a diffusing reactant is surrounded by a sea of randomly moving traps. The analysis is based on the random-variable formalism of anomalous diffusive processes. We find that the empirical trapping-reaction law, according to which the reactant concentration decreases in time as a product of an exponential and a stret…

A number of results for reactions involving subdiffusive species all with the same anomalous exponent gamma have recently appeared in the literature and can often be understood in terms of a subordination principle whereby time t in ordinary diffusion is replaced by t^gamma. However, very few results are known for reactions involving different species characterized by different anomalous diffusion exponents. Here we study the reaction dynamics of a (sub)diffusive particle surrounded by a sea of (sub)diffusive traps in one dimension. We find rigorous results for the asymptotic survival probabil…
Anomalous relaxation and diffusion processes have been widely characterized by fractional derivative models, where the definition of the fractional-order derivative remains a historical debate due to the singular memory kernel that challenges numerical calculations. This study first explores physical properties of relaxation and diffusion models where the fractional derivative was defined recently using an exponential kernel. Analytical analysis shows that the fractional derivative model with an exponential kernel cannot characterize non-exponential dynamics well-documented in anomalous relaxa…
We explain the ubiquity and extremely slow evolution of non gaussian out-of-equilibrium distributions for the Hamiltonian Mean-Field model, by means of traditional kinetic theory. Deriving the Fokker-Planck equation for a test particle, one also unambiguously explains and predicts striking slow algebraic relaxation of the momenta autocorrelation, previously found in numerical simulations. Finally, angular anomalous diffusion are predicted for a large class of initial distributions. Non Extensive Statistical Mechanics is shown to be unnecessary for the interpretation of these phenomena.
The kinetics of phase and population relaxation in quantum systems induced by noise with anomalously slowly decaying correlation function P (t) ~ (wt)^{- alpha}, where 0 < alpha < 1 is analyzed within continuous time random walk approach. The relaxation kinetics is shown to be anomalously slow. Moreover for alpha < 1 in the limit of short characteristic time of fluctuations w^{-1} the kinetics is independent of w. As alpha \to 1 the relaxation regime changes from the static limit to fluctuation narrowing. Simple analytical expressions are obtained describing the specific features of the kineti…
We consider relaxation processes that exhibit a stretched exponential behavior. We find that in those systems, where the relaxation arises from two competing exponential processes, the size of the system may play a dominant role. Above a crossover time tx that depends logarithmically on the size of the system the relaxation changes from a stretched exponential to a simple exponential decay, where the decay rate also depends logarithmically on the size of the system. This result is relevant to large-scale Monte-Carlo simulations and should be amenable to experimental verification in low-dimensi…
Optical tweezers setup is often used to probe the motion of individual tracer particle, which promotes the study of relaxation dynamics of a generic process confined in a harmonic potential. We uncover the dependence of ensemble- and time-averaged mean square displacements of confined processes on the velocity correlation function $C(t,t+τ)$ of the original process. With two different scaling forms of $C(t,t+τ)$ for small $τ$ and large $τ$, the stationary value and the relaxation behaviors can be obtained immediately. The gotten results are valid for a large amount of anomalous diffusion proce…
The kinetics of relaxation in quantum systems induced by anomalous fluctuating noise is studied in detail. In this study two processes are considered, as examples: (1) relaxation in two-level system caused by external noise with slowly decaying correlation function P (t) ~ (wt)^{-alpha}, where 0 < alpha < 1, and (2) anomalous-diffusion controlled radical pair recombination in which relaxation results from the reaction with slowly fluctuating reaction rate whose fluctuations are governed by subdiffusive relative motion of radicals in a potential well. Analysis of these two processes is made wit…
In this study we obtained analytically relaxation function in terms of rotational correlation functions based on Brownian motion for complex disordered systems in a stochastic framework. We found out that rotational relaxation function has a fractional form for complex disordered systems, which indicates relaxation has non-exponential character obeys to Kohlrausch-William-Watts law, following the Mittag-Leffler decay.
The Mpemba effect denotes an anomalous relaxation phenomenon where a system initially at a hot temperature cools faster than a system that starts at a less elevated temperature. We introduce an isothermal analog of this effect for a system prepared in a non-equilibrium steady state that then relaxes towards equilibrium. Here, the driving strength, which determines the initial non-equilibrium steady state, takes the role of the temperature in the original version. As a paradigm, we consider a particle initially driven by a non-conservative force along a one-dimensional periodic potential. We sh…
We consider the effect of non-secular resonances for interacting nuclear spins in solids which were predicted theoretically to exist in the presence of strong static and strong radio-frequency magnetic fields. These resonances imply corrections to the standard secular approximation for the nuclear spin-spin interaction in solids, which, in turn, should lead to an anomalous longitudinal relaxation in nuclear magnetic resonance experiments. In this article, we investigate the feasibility of the experimental observation of this anomalous longitudinal relaxation in calcium fluoride (CaF$_2$) and c…
We study thermal relaxation in ordered arrays of coupled nonlinear elements with external driving. We find, that our model exhibits dynamic self-organization manifested in a universal stretched-exponential form of relaxation. We identify two types of self-organization, cooperative and anti-cooperative, which lead to fast and slow relaxation, respectively. We give a qualitative explanation for the behavior of the stretched exponent in different parameter ranges. We emphasize that this is a system exhibiting stretched-exponential relaxation without explicit disorder or frustration.
As well known, the generalized Langevin equation with a memory kernel decreasing at large times as an inverse power law of time describes the motion of an anomalously diffusing particle. Here, we focus attention on some new aspects of the dynamics, successively considering the memory kernel, the particle's mean velocity, and the scattering function. All these quantities are studied from a unique angle, namely, the discussion of the possible existence of a distribution of relaxation times characterizing their time decay. Although a very popular concept, a relaxation time distribution cannot be …
Dynamical systems driven by a general Lévy stable noise are considered. The inertia is included and the noise, represented by a generalised Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process, has a finite relaxation time. A general linear problem (the additive noise) is solved: the resulting distribution converges with time to the distribution for the white-noise, massless case. Moreover, a multiplicative noise is discussed. It can make the distribution steeper and the variance, which is finite, depends sublinearly on time (subdiffusion). For a small mass, a white-noise limit corresponds to the Stratonovich interpret…
Dynamical heterogeneity in a system of Gay-Berne ellipsoids near its isotropic-nematic (I-N) transition and also in an equimolar mixture of Lennard-Jones spheres and Gay-Berne ellipsoids in deeply supercooled regime is probed by the time evolution of non-Gaussian parameter (NGP). The appearance of a dominant second peak in the rotational NGP near the I-N transition signals the growth of pseudonematic domains. Surprisingly such a second peak is instead observed in the translational NGP for glassy binary mixture. Localization of orientational motion near the I-N transition is found to be respons…
This Chapter contains an overview of the effects of nonlinear interactions in selected problems of non-equilibrium statistical mechanics. Most of the emphasis is put on open setups, where energy is exchanged with the environment. With reference to a few models of classical coupled anharmonic oscillators, we review anomalous but general properties such as extremely slow relaxation processes, or non-Fourier heat transport.
We study the spectral properties of a class of random matrices where the matrix elements depend exponentially on the distance between uniformly and randomly distributed points. This model arises naturally in various physical contexts, such as the diffusion of particles, slow relaxations in glasses, and scalar phonon localization. Using a combination of a renormalization group procedure and a direct moment calculation, we find the eigenvalue distribution density (i.e., the spectrum) and the localization properties of the eigenmodes, for arbitrary dimension. Finally, we discuss the physical impl…
We introduce a new relaxation function depending on an arbitrary parameter as solution of a kinetic equation in the same way as the relaxation function introduced empirically by Debye, Cole-Cole, Davidson-Cole and Havriliak-Negami, anomalous relaxation in dielectrics, which are recovered as particular cases. We propose a differential equation introducing a fractional operator written in terms of the Hilfer fractional derivative of order ξ, with 0<ξ<1 and type η, with 0<η<1. To discuss the solution of the fractional differential equation, the methodology of Laplace transform is required. As a b…
We propose to study the origin of algebraic decay of two-point correlation functions observed in glasses, proteins, and quantum dots by their nonlinear response to sequences of ultrafast laser pulses. Power-law spectral singularities and temporal relaxation in two-dimensional correlation spectroscopy (2DCS) signals are predicted for a continuous time random walk model of stochastic spectral jumps in a two level system with a power-law distribution of waiting times $ψ(t)\sim t^{-α-1}$. Spectroscopic signatures of stationary ensembles for $1<α<2$ and aging effects in nonstationary ensembles with…
After reviewing the main features of anomalous energy transport in 1D systems, we report simulations performed with chains of noisy anharmonic oscillators. The stochastic terms are added in such a way to conserve total energy and momentum, thus keeping the basic hydrodynamic features of these models. The addition of this "conservative noise" allows to obtain a more efficient estimate of the power-law divergence of heat conductivity kappa(L) ~ L^alpha in the limit of small noise and large system size L. By comparing the numerical results with rigorous predictions obtained for the harmonic chain…
We consider the thermal relaxation of a particle in a piecewise-constant potential landscape subject to thermal fluctuations in the overdamped limit. We study the connection between the occurrence of the Mpemba effect, the presence of metastable states, and phase transitions as a function of the potential. We find that the Mpemba effect exists even in cases without metastable states. In the considered physical system, the borders of the areas where the effect happens correspond to either eigenvector changes of direction or to phase transitions. Finally, we discuss the topological aspects of th…
We measure the relaxation time of a square lattice Ising ferromagnet that is quenched to zero-temperature from supercritical initial conditions. We reveal an anomalous and seemingly overlooked timescale associated with the relaxation to "frozen" two-stripe states. While close to a power law of the form $\sim L^ν$ , we argue this timescale actually grows as $\sim L^{2}\ln L$, with L the linear dimension of the system. We uncover the mechanism behind this scaling form by using a synthetic initial condition that replicates the late time ordering of two-stripe states, and subsequently explain it h…
We analyze the temperature relaxation phenomena of systems in contact with a thermal reservoir that undergo a non-Markovian diffusion process. From a generalized Langevin equation, we show that the temperature is governed by a law of cooling of the Newton's law type in which the relaxation time depends on the velocity autocorrelation and is then characterized by the memory function. The analysis of the temperature decay reveals the existence of an anomalous cooling in which the temperature may oscillate. Despite this anomalous behavior, we show that the variation of entropy remains always posi…
The dynamics of particles interacting by key-lock binding of attached biomolecules are studied theoretically. Experimental realizations of such systems include colloids grafted with complementary single-stranded DNA (ssDNA), and particles grafted with antibodies to cell-membrane proteins. Depending on the coverage of the functional groups, we predict two distinct regimes. In the low coverage localized regime, there is an exponential distribution of departure times. As the coverage is increased the system enters a diffusive regime resulting from the interplay of particle desorption and diffusio…
Within the framework of a simple Rouse-type model we present exact analytical results for dynamical critical behaviour on the sol side of the gelation transition. The stress-relaxation function is shown to exhibit a stretched-exponential long-time decay. The divergence of the static shear viscosity is governed by the critical exponent $k=ϕ-β$, where $ϕ$ is the (first) crossover exponent of random resistor networks, and $β$ is the critical exponent for the gel fraction. We also derive new results on the behaviour of normal stress coefficients.
We revisit the Mittag-Leffler functions of a real variable $t$, with one, two and three order-parameters $\{α, β, γ\}$, as far as their Laplace transform pairs and complete monotonicty properties are concerned. These functions, subjected to the requirement to be completely monotone for $t>0$, are shown to be suitable models for non--Debye relaxation phenomena in dielectrics including as particular cases the classical models referred to as Cole-Cole, Davidson-Cole and Havriliak-Negami. We show 3D plots of the response functions and of the corresponding spectral distributions, keeping fixed one …
A general kind of models with hierarchically constrained dynamics is shown to exhibit logarithmic anomalous relaxation, similarly to a variety of complex strongly interacting materials. The logarithmic behavior describes most of the decay of the response function.
We compute the spin structure factor of XXZ spin chains in the Heisenberg and gapped (Ising) regimes in the high-temperature limit for nonzero magnetization, within the framework of generalized hydrodynamics including diffusive corrections. The structure factor shows a hierarchy of timescales in the gapped phase, owing to $s$-spin magnon bound states (`strings') of various sizes. Although short strings move ballistically, long strings move primarily diffusively as a result of their collisions with short strings. The interplay between these effects gives rise to anomalous power-law decay of the…
Epithelial cell tissues have a slow relaxation dynamics resembling that of supercooled liquids. Yet, they also have distinguishing features. These include an extended short-time sub-diffusive transient, as observed in some experiments and recent studies of model systems, and a sub-Arrhenius dependence of the relaxation time on temperature, as reported in numerical studies. Here we demonstrate that the anomalous glassy dynamics of epithelial tissues originates from the emergence of a fractal-like energy landscape, particles becoming virtually free to diffuse in specific phase space directions u…
We study relaxation of long-wavelength density perturbations in one dimensional conserved Manna sandpile. Far from criticality where correlation length $ξ$ is finite, relaxation of density profiles having wave numbers $k \rightarrow 0$ is diffusive, with relaxation time $τ_R \sim k^{-2}/D$ with $D$ being the density-dependent bulk-diffusion coefficient. Near criticality with $k ξ\gsim 1$, the bulk diffusivity diverges and the transport becomes anomalous; accordingly, the relaxation time varies as $τ_R \sim k^{-z}$, with the dynamical exponent $z=2-(1-β)/ν_{\perp} < 2$, where $β$ is the critica…
We study far from equilibrium transport of a periodically driven inertial Brownian particle moving in a periodic potential. As detected recently for a SQUID ratchet dynamics (Spiechowicz J. & Luczka J. Phys. Rev. E 91, 062104 (2015)), the mean square deviation of the particle position from its average may involve three distinct intermediate, although extended diffusive regimes: initially as superdiffusion, followed by subdiffusion and finally, normal diffusion in the asymptotic long time limit. Even though these anomalies are transient effects, their lifetime can be many, many orders of magnit…
We study the nonequilibrium dynamics of random spin chains that remain integrable (i.e., solvable via Bethe ansatz): because of correlations in the disorder, these systems escape localization and feature ballistically spreading quasiparticles. We derive a generalized hydrodynamic theory for dynamics in such random integrable systems, including diffusive corrections due to disorder, and use it to study non-equilibrium energy and spin transport. We show that diffusive corrections to the ballistic propagation of quasiparticles can arise even in noninteracting settings, in sharp contrast with clea…
Functionals of a stochastic process Y(t) model many physical time-extensive observables, e.g. particle positions, local and occupation times or accumulated mechanical work. When Y(t) is a normal diffusive process, their statistics are obtained as the solution of the Feynman-Kac equation. This equation provides the crucial link between the expected values of diffusion processes and the solutions of deterministic second-order partial differential equations. When Y(t) is an anomalous diffusive process, generalizations of the Feynman-Kac equation that incorporate power-law or more general waiting …
The paper is devoted to recent advances in stochastic modeling of anomalous kinetic processes observed in dielectric materials which are prominent examples of disordered (complex) systems. Theoretical studies of dynamical properties of those "structures with variations" [Goldenfield and Kadanoff 1999 Science 284 87--9] require application of such mathematical tools by means of which their random nature can be analyzed and, independently of the details differing various systems (dipolar materials, glasses, semiconductors, liquid crystals, polymers, etc.), the empirical universal kinetic pattern…
The Mpemba effect is a counter-intuitive relaxation phenomenon, where a system prepared at a hot temperature cools down faster than an identical system initiated at a cold temperature when both are quenched to an even colder bath. Such non-monotonic relaxations were observed in various systems, including water, magnetic alloys, polymers, and driven granular gases. We analyze the Mpemba effect in Markovian dynamics and discover that a stronger version of the effect often exists for a carefully chosen set of initial temperatures. In this \emph{strong Mpemba effect}, the relaxation time jumps to …
We discuss anomalous relaxation processes in Davydov one-dimensional chain molecule that consists of an exciton and an acoustic phonon field as a thermal reservoir in the chain. We derive a kinetic equation for the exciton using the complex spectral representation of the Liouville-von Neumann operator. Due to the one-dimensionality, the momentum space separates into infinite sets of disjoint irreducible subspaces dynamically independent of one another. Hence, momentum relaxation occurs only within each subspace toward the Maxwell distribution. We obtain a hydrodynamic mode with transport coeff…
Exact analytic calculations in spin-1/2 XY chains, show the presence of long-time tails in the asymptotic dynamics of spatially inhomogeneous excitations. The decay of inhomogeneities, for $t\to \infty $, is given in the form of a power law \[ (t/τ_{Q}) ^{-ν_{Q}} \] where the relaxation time $τ_{Q}$ and the exponent $ν_{Q}$ depend on the wave vector $Q$, characterizing the spatial modulation of the initial excitation. We consider several variants of the XY model (dimerized, with staggered magnetic field, with bond alternation, and with isotropic and uniform interactions), that are grouped into…
A modified-Bloch equation based on the fractal derivative is proposed to analyze pulsed field gradient (PFG) anomalous diffusion. Anomalous diffusion exists in many systems such as in polymer or biological systems. PFG anomalous diffusion could be analyzed based on the fractal derivative or the fractional derivative. Compared to the fractional derivative, the fractal derivative is simpler, and it is faster in numerical evaluations. In this paper, the fractal derivative is employed to build the modified-Bloch equation that is a fundamental method to describe the spin magnetization evolution aff…
It is analytically shown that the one-dimensional Ising model with Glauber dynamics exhibits short time memory effects when submitted to an abrupt change in the temperature. These effects are qualitatively similar to those experimentally observed in the compaction of vibrated granular materials. Moreover, a critical time separating regimes of ``normal'' and ``anomalous'' responses to the perturbation is found.
In the quasi-stationary states of the Hamiltonian Mean-Field model, we numerically compute correlation functions of momenta and diffusion of angles with homogeneous initial conditions. This is an example, in a N-body Hamiltonian system, of anomalous transport properties characterized by non exponential relaxations and long-range temporal correlations. Kinetic theory predicts a striking transition between weak anomalous diffusion and strong anomalous diffusion. The numerical results are in excellent agreement with the quantitative predictions of the anomalous transport exponents. Noteworthy, al…
We study heat transport in a chain of harmonic oscillators with random elastic collisions between nearest-neighbours. The equations of motion of the covariance matrix are numerically solved for free and fixed boundary conditions. In the thermodynamic limit, the shape of the temperature profile and the value of the stationary heat flux depend on the choice of boundary conditions. For free boundary conditions, they also depend on the coupling strength with the heat baths. Moreover, we find a strong violation of local equilibrium at the chain edges that determine two boundary layers of size $\sqr…

We discuss theoretical models for the cooperative binding dynamics of ligands to substrates, such as dimeric motor proteins to microtubules or more extended macromolecules like tropomyosin to actin filaments. We study the effects of steric constraints, size of ligands, binding rates and interaction between neighboring proteins on the binding dynamics and binding stoichiometry. Starting from an empty lattice the binding dynamics goes, quite generally, through several stages. The first stage represents fast initial binding closely resembling the physics of random sequential adsorption processes.…
