We introduce a new invariant for subcategories X of finitely generated modules over a local ring R which we call the radius of X. We show that if R is a complete intersection and X is resolving, then finiteness of the radius forces X to contain only maximal Cohen-Macaulay modules. We also show that the category of maximal Cohen-Macaulay modules has finite radius when R is a Cohen-Macaulay complete local ring with perfect coefficient field. We link the radius to many well-studied notions such as the dimension of the stable category of maximal Cohen-Macaulay modules, finite/countable Cohen-Macaulay representation type and the uniform Auslander condition.
Let R be a commutative noetherian ring. Denote by mod R the category of finitely generated R-modules. In the present paper, we first provide various sufficient (and necessary) conditions for a full subcategory of mod R to be a Serre subcategory, which include several refinements of theorems of Stanley and Wang and of Takahashi with simpler proofs. Next we consider when an IKE-closed subcategory of mod R is a torsionfree class. We investigate certain modules out of which all modules of finite length can be built by taking direct summands and extensions, and then we apply it to show that the IKE…
Let R be a commutative noetherian local ring. As an analogue of the notion of the dimension of a triangulated category defined by Rouquier, the notion of the dimension of a subcategory of finitely generated R-modules is introduced in this paper. We found evidence that certain categories over nice singularities have small dimensions. When R is Cohen-Macaulay, under a mild assumption it is proved that finiteness of the dimension of the full subcategory consisting of maximal Cohen-Macaulay modules which are locally free on the punctured spectrum is equivalent to saying that R is an isolated singu…
In this paper, we consider subcategories consisting of the extensions of modules in two given Serre subcategories to find a method of constructing Serre subcategories of the category of modules. We shall give a criterion for this subcategory to be a Serre subcategory.
Let R be a commutative Noetherian local ring, and denote by mod R the category of finitely generated R-modules. In this paper, we consider when mod R has a nontrivial extension-closed subcategory. We prove that this is the case if there are part of a minimal system of generators x,y of the maximal ideal with xy=0, and that it holds if R is a stretched Artinian Gorenstein local ring which is not a hypersurface.
Let $R$ be a commutative noetherian ring, $\frak a$ be an ideal of $R$, $\cS$ be an arbitrary Serre subcategory of $R$-modules and let $\cN$ be the subcategory of finitely generated $R$-modules. In this paper, we study $\cN\cS$-$\frak a$-cofinite modules with respect to the extension subcategory $\cN\cS$ when $\dim R/\frak a\leq 2$. We also study $\frak a$-cofiniteness with respect to a new dimension.
We study two subcategories of the category of artinian modules, a wide subcategory and a Serre subcategory. We prove that all wide subcategories of artinian modules are Serre subcategories. We also provide the bijection between the set of Serre subcategories and the set of specialization closed subsets of the set of closed prime ideals of some completed ring.
Let $R$ be a commutative noetherian ring, $\frak a$ be an ideal of $R$, $\mathcal{S}$ be an arbitrary Serre subcategory of $R$-modules satisfying the condition $C_{\frak a}$ and let $\mathcal{N}$ be the subcategory of finitely generated $R$-modules. In this paper, we define and study $\mathcal{NS}$-$\frak a$-cofinite modules with respect to the extension subcategory $\mathcal{NS}$ as an generalization of the classical notion, namely $\frak a$-cofinite modules. For the lower dimensions, we show that the classical results of $\frak a$-cofiniteness hold for the new notion.
Let $R$ be a commutative Noetherian Henselian local ring. Denote by $\mathrm{mod} R$ the category of finitely generated $R$-modules, and by ${\mathcal G}$ the full subcategory of $\mathrm{mod} R$ consisting of all G-projective $R$-modules. In this paper, we consider when a given $R$-module has a right ${\mathcal G}$-approximation. For this, we study the full subcategory $\mathrm{rap}{\mathcal G}$ of $\mathrm{mod} R$ consisting of all $R$-modules that admit right ${\mathcal G}$-approximations. We investigate the structure of $\mathrm{rap}{\mathcal G}$ by observing ${\mathcal G}$, ${\mathcal G}^…
Let $\mathfrak{a}$ be an ideal of a commutative noetherian ring $R$, $\mathcal{S}$ a Serre subcategory of $R$-modules satisfying the condition $C_\mathfrak{a}$ and $\mathcal{N}$ the subcategory of finitely generated $R$-modules. In this paper, we continue the study of $\mathcal{NS}$-$\mathfrak{a}$-cofinite modules with respect to the extension subcategory $\mathcal{NS}$, show that some classical results of $\mathfrak{a}$-cofiniteness hold for $\mathcal{NS}$-$\mathfrak{a}$-cofiniteness in the cases $\mathrm{dim}R=d$ or $\mathrm{dim}R/\mathfrak{a}=d-1$, where $d$ is a positive integer. We also s…
Aghapournahr and Melkersson introduced the notion of Melkersson condition on a Serre subcategory of the module category over a commutative noetherian ring. This paper investigates the structure of set of prime ideals satisfying a Melkersson condition on a Serre subcategory. We try to calculate members of a set of these prime ideals for a subcategory consisting of extension modules in two given Serre subcategories of the module category. Meanwhile, we classify the structure of set of prime ideals satisfying a Melkersson condition over a 0-dimensional ring, a 1-dimensional local ring, and a 2-di…
Let $S$ be a commutative noetherian ring. The extensions of matrix factorizations of non-zerodivisors $x_1,\dots,x_n$ of $S$ form a full subcategory of finitely generated modules over the quotient ring $S/(x_1\cdots x_n)$. In this paper, we investigate the radius (in the sense of Dao and Takahashi) of this full subcategory. As an application, we obtain an upper bound of the dimension (in the sense of Rouquier) of the singularity category of a local hypersurface of dimension one, which refines a recent result of Kawasaki, Nakamura and Shimada.
Let $(R, \m)$ be a commutative Noetherian local ring with $\m^3 =(0)$. We give a condition for $R$ to have a non-free module of G-dimension zero. We shall also construct a family of non-isomorphic indecomposable modules of G-dimension zero with parameters in an open subset of projective space. We shall finally show that the subcategory consisting of modules of G-dimension zero over $R$ is not necessarily a contravariantly finite subcategory in the category of finitely generated $R$-modules.
In this paper, we will introduce a subcategory of totally reflexive modules that have a saturated filtration by other totally reflexive modules. We will prove these are precisely the totally reflexive modules with an upper-triangular presentation matrix. We conclude with an investigation of the ranks of $\operatorname{Ext}^1$ of two such modules over a specific ring.
This paper studies characterizing local rings in terms of homological dimensions. The key tool is the notion of a prethick subcategory which we introduce in this paper. Our methods recover the theorems of Salarian, Sather-Wagstaff and Yassemi.
Let R be a commutative noetherian local ring, and let X be a resolving subcategory of the category of finitely generated R-modules. In this paper, we study modules in X by relating them to modules in X which are free on the punctured spectrum of R. We do this by investigating nonfree loci and establishing an analogue of the notion of a level in a triangulated category which has been introduced by Avramov, Buchweitz, Iyengar and Miller. As an application, we prove a result on the dimension of the nonfree locus of a resolving subcategory having only countably many nonisomorphic indecomposable mo…
Let $R$ be a commutative noetherian ring, let $\frak a$ and $\frak b$ be two ideals of $R$; and let $\Ss$ be a Serre subcategory of $R$-modules. We give a necessary and sufficient condition by which $\Ss$ satisfies $C_{\frak a}$ and $C_{\frak b}$ conditions. As an conclusion we show that over a artinian local ring, every Serre subcategory satisfies $C_{\frak a}$ condition. We also show that $\Ss_{\frak a}$ is closed under extension of modules. If $\Ss$ is a torsion subcategory, we prove that $S$ satisfies $C_{\frak a}$ condition. We prove that $C_{\frak a}$ condition can be transferred via rin…
Let R be a quotient ring of a commutative coherent regular ring by a finitely generated ideal. Hovey gave a bijection between the set of coherent subcategories of the category of finitely presented R-modules and the set of thick subcategories of the derived category of perfect R-complexes. Using this isomorphism, he proved that every coherent subcategory of finitely presented R-modules is a Serre subcategory. In this paper, it is proved that this holds whenever R is a commutative noetherian ring. This paper also yields a module version of the bijection between the set of localizing subcategori…
A full subcategory of modules over a commutative ring $R$ is wide if it is abelian and closed under extensions. Hovey \cite{wide} gave a classification of wide subcategories of finitely presented modules over regular coherent rings in terms of certain specialisation closed subsets of $\Spec(R)$. We use this classification theorem to study K-theory and Krull-Schmidt type decompositions for wide subcategories. It is shown that the K-group, in the sense of Grothendieck, of a wide subcategory $\W$ of finitely presented modules over a regular coherent ring is isomorphic to that of the thick subcate…
In this paper, we classify certain subcategories of modules over a ring R. A wide subcategory of R-modules is an Abelian subcategory of R-Mod that is closed under extensions. We give a complete classification of wide subcategories of finitely presented modules when R is a quotient of a regular commutative coherent ring by a finitely generated ideal. This includes all finitely presented algebras over a principal ideal domain, as well as polynomial rings on infinitely many variable over a PID. The classification is in terms of subsets of Spec R, and depends heavily on Thomason's classification o…
Let $R$ be a commutative Noetherian ring and let $\G$ be the category of modules of G-dimension zero over $R$. We denote the associated stable category by $\pG$. We show that the functor category $\modpG$ is a Frobenius category and we argue how this property could characterize $\G$ as a subcategory of $\modR$.
Let R be a commutative Noetherian local ring with residue field k. Let X be a resolving subcategory of finitely generated R-modules. This paper mainly studies when X contains k or consists of totally reflexive modules. It is proved that X does so if X is closed under cosyzygies. A conjecture of Dao and Takahashi is also shown to hold in several cases.
Let R be a Noetherian ring, I an ideal of R and M a ZD-module. Let S be a Melkersson subcategory with respect to I such that M/IM doesn't belong to S. We show that all maximal S-sequences on M in I, have equal length. If this common length is denoted by S-depth_I(M), then S-depth_I(M) = inf{i : H^i_I(M) doesn't belong to S}.
Let $R$ be a commutative Noetherian ring with non-zero identity and $\fa$ an ideal of $R$. Let $M$ be a finite $R$--module of of finite projective dimension and $N$ an arbitrary finite $R$--module. We characterize the membership of the generalized local cohomology modules $\lc^{i}_{\fa}(M,N)$ in certain Serre subcategories of the category of modules from upper bounds. We define and study the properties of a generalization of cohomological dimension of generalized local cohomology modules. Let $\mathcal S$ be a Serre subcategory of the category of $R$--modules and $n \geqslant \pd M$ be an inte…
