The ATLAS detector is capable of resolving the highest energy pp collisions at luminosities sufficient to yield 10's of simultaneous interactions within a bunch collision lasting <0.5 nsec. Already in 2011 a mean occupancy of 20 is often found in pp running. In 2004 studies by ATLAS showed that the detector would have excellent performance also for the foreseeable particle multiplicities in the highest energy p-Pb and Pb-Pb collisions that the LHC will produce. These studies resulted in a letter of intent to the LHC committee by ATLAS to do physics with these beams also. In the past 2 years of data taking, ATLAS detector performance studies have confirmed these expectations at the actual multiplicities presented below. The ATLAS program removes an artificial specialization that arose about 30 years ago in high energy physics when the energy and intensity frontier moved to colliders. Before that time, for example, the same experiment that discovered the $Υ$ (CFS and E605 at Fermilab) also measured the nuclear modification factor in the production of high $p_T$ identified charged hadrons using nuclear targets from Beryllium through Tungsten.
More than half a million minimum-bias events of LHC collision data were collected by the ATLAS experiment in December 2009 at centre-of-mass energies of 0.9 TeV and 2.36 TeV. This paper reports on studies of the initial performance of the ATLAS detector from these data. Comparisons between data and Monte Carlo predictions are shown for distributions of several track- and calorimeter-based quantities. The good performance of the ATLAS detector in these first data gives confidence for successful running at higher energies.
This document presents a measurement of WZ production in 1.02 fb-1 of pp collision data at CME of 7 TeV collected by the ATLAS experiment at LHC in 2011. The production cross-section is measured to be consistent with the Standard Model (SM) prediction. Limits on anomalous triple gauge boson couplings have been derived.
The ATLAS detector has been used to search for high mass ee or mumu resonances, such as new heavy neutral gauge bosons. Over 1 fb^{-1} of proton-proton collisions at s = 7 TeV recorded by the ATLAS experiment are used to search for a high mass state decaying to dilepton pairs. No excess over Standard Model expectations is observed, and limits are placed on benchmark models predicting spin-1 and spin-2 resonances.
The early physics program at the ATLAS experiment includes measuring the basic properties of proton proton collisions, such as charged particle multiplicities, in order to constrain phenomenological models of soft interactions in the LHC energy regime. An inclusive and well understood trigger is crucial to minimize any possible bias in the event selection. The ATLAS experiment uses two complementary types of minimum bias triggers. A scintillator trigger sensitive to the forward regions of 2.1<|eta|<3.8 has been proven to efficiently select proton proton collisions, while a trigger based on cou…

The analysis was performed with 33 pb^-1 of pp collision data collected by the ATLAS experiment at the LHC in 2010 at sqrt{s}= 7 TeV. The poster will show some highlights of the analysis.
Measurements of W and Z cross-sections in pp collisions at ECM = 7 TeV at the Large Hadron Collider are reported from the ATLAS experiment. From an observation of 118 leptonic W candidates, the inclusive W cross-section times leptonic branching fraction is measured as [9.3 \pm 0.9(stat) \pm 0.6(syst) \pm 1.0(lumi)] nb. The result for the Z boson is [0.83 \pm 0.07(stat) \pm 0.06(syst) \pm 0.09(lumi)] nb. These results agree with theoretical expectations from NNLO QCD.
The luminosity determination for the ATLAS detector at the LHC during pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 8 TeV in 2012 is presented. The evaluation of the luminosity scale is performed using several luminometers, and comparisons between these luminosity detectors are made to assess the accuracy, consistency and long-term stability of the results. A luminosity uncertainty of dL/L = +/- 1.9% is obtained for the 22.7 fb$^{-1}$ of pp collision data delivered to ATLAS at $\sqrt{s}$ = 8 TeV in 2012.
Searches for high-mass resonances decaying to pairs of standard model bosons using ATLAS and CMS detectors are presented. The searches use 15 - 36 $\textrm{fb}^{-1}$ of proton-proton collision data collected at the centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV at the LHC. Many different final states have been considered and the results are interpreted in a range of theories beyond the standard model of particle physics, most common being heavy vector triplet and warped extra dimensions.
Two recent measurements of the cross section for the inclusive production of isolated prompt photons in pp collisions at a center-of-mass energy sqrt(s) = 7 TeV are presented. The results are based on data collected in 2010 with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The measurements cover the pseudorapidity ranges |eta(gamma)|<1.37 and 1.52<|eta(gamma)|<2.37 and the transverse energy range 15 < ET(gamma) < 400 GeV. The measured cross sections are compared to predictions from next-to-leading-order perturbative QCD calculations.
The luminosity calibration for the ATLAS detector at the LHC during pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV in 2010 and 2011 is presented. Evaluation of the luminosity scale is performed using several luminosity-sensitive detectors, and comparisons are made of the long-term stability and accuracy of this calibration applied to the pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV. A luminosity uncertainty of Delta L/L = +/- 3.5% is obtained for the 47 pb-1 of data delivered to ATLAS in 2010, and an uncertainty of Delta L/L = +/- 1.8% is obtained for the 5.5 fb-1 delivered in 2011.
We report the observation of energetic jet production in proton-proton collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV, based on about 1 nb^-1 of integrated luminosity collected by the ATLAS detector. The anti-kT algorithm is used to reconstruct jets with pT > 30 GeV and |y| < 2.8. Jets with pT up to ~500 GeV and events with dijet mass up to ~1 TeV are observed. The jet shapes and charged particle flow confirm that the observed jet signal corresponds to collimated flows of particles in the final state.
The search for the production of the Higgs boson associated with a pair of top quarks in the ATLAS experiment is presented. It focuses on Higgs bosons decaying to $b\bar{b}$ and events containing two leptons (electrons and/or muons). It uses 20.3 fb$^{-1}$ of $pp$ collision data at $\sqrt{s}$ = 8 TeV collected with the ATLAS detector at the LHC in 2012. No significant excess of events is found and the 95% CL observed (expected) limit is 7.0xSM (4.3xSM). After combining with the single lepton final state an observed (expected) limit of 4.1xSM (2.6xSM) with a best fit of $μ=1.7\pm1.4$ is obtaine…
A search for new heavy particles manifested as resonances in two-jet final states is presented. The data were produced in root(s) = 7 TeV proton-proton collisions by the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 315 nb^-1 collected by the ATLAS detector. No resonances were observed. Upper limits were set on the product of cross section and signal acceptance for excited-quark (q*) production as a function of q* mass. These exclude at the 95% CL the q* mass interval 0.30 < m(q*) < 1.26 TeV, extending the reach of previous experiments.

With 414 observed WW candidate events and an estimated background of 170$\pm$28 events, the measured WW production cross section is $48.2 \pm 4.0 {\rm(stat)} \pm 6.4 {\rm(syst)} \pm 1.8 {\rm(lumi)}$ pb, in agreement with the Standard Model NLO prediction of 46$\pm$3 pb.
A search for new phenomena in events featuring a high energy jet and large missing transverse momentum in proton-proton collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV is presented using a dataset corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 33 pb^-1 recorded with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The number of observed events is consistent with the Standard Model prediction and this result is interpreted in terms of limits on a model of Large Extra Dimensions.
Dijet angular distributions from the first LHC pp collisions at center-of-mass energy sqrt(s) = 7 TeV have been measured with the ATLAS detector. The dataset used for this analysis represents an integrated luminosity of 3.1 pb-1. Correlations are measured for charged particles produced in the kinematic range of transverse momentum pT > 100 MeV and pseudorapidity |eta| < 2.5. A complex structure in pseudorapidity and azimuth is observed at both collision energies. Results are compared to Pythia 8 and Herwig++ as well as to the AMBT2B, DW and Perugia 20…
The ATLAS experiment identifies and reconstructs muons with two high precision tracking systems, the Inner Detector and the Muon Spectrometer, which provide independent measurements of the muon momentum. This paper summarizes the performance of the combined muon reconstruction in terms of reconstruction efficiency, momentum scale and resolution. We present first measurements of charged and neutral particle-flow correlations in pp collisions using the ATLAS calorimeters. Data were collected in 2009 and 2010 at centre-of-mass energies of 900 GeV and 7 TeV. Events were selected using a minimum-bias trigger which required a charged particle in scintillation counters on either side of the interaction point. Particle flows, sensitive to the underlying event, are measured using clusters of energy in the ATLAS calorimeters, taking advantage of their fine granularity. No Monte Carlo generator used in this analysis can accurately describe the m…

This Thesis presents the measurement of the inclusive jet cross section using the full 2010 data set, corresponding to 37 pb^{-1} collected by ATLAS. Jets with p_{T} > 20 GeV and |y| < 4.4 are considered in this analysis. The measurement of the jet shapes using the first 3 pb^{-1} is also presented, for jets with p_{T} > 30 GeV and |y| < 2.8. Both measurements are unfolded back to the particle level. Results are compared to theoretical predictions, showing the potential of the measurements to test QCD, and its importance in the search for new physics.

The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 42 pb-1. No significant deviation from the Standard Model is observed in the dimuon mass spectrum, allowing the following 95% C.L. limits to be set on the energy scale of contact interactions: Lambda > 4.9 TeV (4.5 TeV) for constructive (destructive) interference in the left-left isoscalar compositeness model. These limits are the most stringent to date for mumuqq contact interactions…
Weak scale supersymmetry is one of the best motivated and studied Standard Model extensions. It predicts the existence of new heavy coloured particles called squarks and gluinos which are the supersymmetric partners of the quarks and gluons, respectively. The poster summarises results on inclusive searches for supersymmetric squarks and gluinos in events containing jets and missing transverse momentum without leptons. The searches use the full data sample recorded in 2012 at $\sqrt{s}$=8~TeV centre-of-mass energy by the ATLAS experiment at the LHC.
The B physics programme of the ATLAS experiment includes measurements of production cross sections, searches for rare B-decay signatures which are sensitive to new physics at the TeV energy scale and studies of CP violation effects in B-events, such as $B_{s}^{0}\rightarrow J/ψϕ$ and $B_{d}^{0}\rightarrow J/ψK_{s}^{0}$. The key to the detection of these B signals in ATLAS is to achieve a high trigger efficiency for low-$p_{T}$ di-muon events, whilst keeping an acceptable trigger rate. ATLAS developed two separate approaches for triggering on di-muon events from resonances such as $J/ψ$ and Ups…

The result is compared with the next-to-leading order with next-to-leading log high pT resummation prediction for the heavy avour production and with MC@NLO prediction for W-Z bosons production. The measurement is sensitive for the first time to the next-to-leading log contribution to th…

A search is performed for collimated muon pairs displaced from the primary vertex produced in the decay of long-lived neutral particles in proton-proton collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV centre-of-mass energy, with the ATLAS detector at the LHC. In a 1.9 fb-1 event sample collected during 2011, the observed data are consistent with the Standard Model background expectations. The search strategy requires that both long-lived particles decay inside the muon spectrometer. No excess of events is observed above the expected background and limits on the Higgs boson production times branching ratio to weakly-interacting, long-lived particles are derived as a function of the particle proper decay length.
A search for pair-produced third generation scalar leptoquarks is presented, using proton-proton collisions at sqrt(s)= 7 TeV at the LHC. We search for evidence of particles that have come to rest in the ATLAS detector and decay at some later time during the periods in the LHC bunch structure without proton-proton collisions. No significant deviations from the expected backgrounds are observed, and a cross-section limit is set. It can be inte…
