The measurement of the muon inclusive differential cross section dsigma/dpT in pp collisions at sqrt(s)=7 TeV with the ATLAS detector is presented. The analysis is performed in the pseudorapidity interval |eta|< 2.5 for muon of transverse momentum 4 < pT < 100 GeV and with an integrated luminosity of 1.4 pb-1. The result is compared with the next-to-leading order with next-to-leading log high pT resummation prediction for the heavy avour production and with MC@NLO prediction for W-Z bosons production. The measurement is sensitive for the first time to the next-to-leading log contribution to the heavy flavour production in hadronic interactions.
Latest results on inclusive top-quark pair production cross-sections are presented using collision data collected by ATLAS and CMS experiments at the LHC. Inclusive and differential measurements of top-quark pair production cross-sections from ATLAS and CMS are presented in the resolved and boosted kinematic regions. The cross-sections are measured as a function of various kinematic observables of the top quarks, the jets and leptons of the event final state.
Muonic final states will provide clean signatures formany physics processes at the LHC. The two LHC experiments ATLAS and CMS will be able to identify muons with a high reconstruction efficiency above 96% and a high transverse momentum resolution better than 2% for transverse momenta below 400 GeV/c and about 10% at 1 TeV/c. The two experiments follow complentary concepts of muon detection. ATLAS has an instrumented air-toroid mangetic system serving as a stand-alone muon spectrometer. CMS relies on high bending power and momentum resolution in the inner detector, and uses an iron yoke to incr…
In 2012, the LHC is operated at sqrt(s) = 8 TeV in a mode leading up to 40 inelastic pp collisions per bunch crossing. The identification and reconstruction of muons produced in hard collisions is difficult in this challenging environment. Di-muon decays of Z bosons have been used to study the muon momentum resolution as well as the muon identification and reconstruction efficiencies of the ATLAS detector as a function of the muon transverse momentum from 15 GeV to 100 GeV and the number of inelastic collisions per event. These studies show that the muon momentum resolution, muon identificatio…
This Thesis presents the measurement of the inclusive jet cross section using the full 2010 data set, corresponding to 37 pb^{-1} collected by ATLAS. Jets with p_{T} > 20 GeV and |y| < 4.4 are considered in this analysis. The measurement of the jet shapes using the first 3 pb^{-1} is also presented, for jets with p_{T} > 30 GeV and |y| < 2.8. Both measurements are unfolded back to the particle level. Results are compared to theoretical predictions, showing the potential of the measurements to test QCD, and its importance in the search for new physics.
The ATLAS experiment identifies and reconstructs muons with two high precision tracking systems, the Inner Detector and the Muon Spectrometer, which provide independent measurements of the muon momentum. This paper summarizes the performance of the combined muon reconstruction in terms of reconstruction efficiency, momentum scale and resolution. Data-driven techniques are used to derive corrections to be applied to the simulation in order to reproduce the reconstruction efficiency, momentum scale and resolution observed in experimental data, and to assess systematic uncertainties on these quan…
Several electroweak precision measurements are performed by the ATLAS and CMS collaborations at the LHC. The main ones are carried out using Drell-Yan production of single W and Z boson. They regard the measurement of the production cross sections of W and Z bosons, the mass of the W boson, and $\sin^2θ_W$. The results of the $\sin^2θ_W$ measurements have an accuracy of approximately twice that reached at LEP and SLD. Other measurements reported are about the Drell-Yan differential production cross section.
The search for the Standard Model Higgs boson in the four lepton (electron and muon) final state with the ATLAS detector at the LHC is presented. The analysis strategy and the efficiency for selecting the signal and rejecting the background are discussed, focusing on the performance of the lepton identification that can be achieved with the first data of LHC expected in 2008.
The results of the most recent measurements of the inclusive $\mathrm{t\bar{t}}$ cross section performed by the ATLAS and CMS experiments at the CERN LHC are summarized. These include results obtained in proton-proton collisions at different centre-of-mass energies, and the first observation of $\mathrm{t\bar{t}}$ production in proton-lead collisions. A new result at $\sqrt{s} = 13~\mathrm{TeV}$ by the CMS Collaboration is presented for the first time at this conference. In this analysis, the total cross section is determined both for a fixed top quark mass value in the simulation of $m_{\math…
The B physics programme of the ATLAS experiment includes measurements of production cross sections, searches for rare B-decay signatures which are sensitive to new physics at the TeV energy scale and studies of CP violation effects in B-events, such as $B_{s}^{0}\rightarrow J/ψϕ$ and $B_{d}^{0}\rightarrow J/ψK_{s}^{0}$. The key to the detection of these B signals in ATLAS is to achieve a high trigger efficiency for low-$p_{T}$ di-muon events, whilst keeping an acceptable trigger rate. ATLAS developed two separate approaches for triggering on di-muon events from resonances such as $J/ψ$ and Ups…
The inclusive jet cross-section has been measured in proton-proton collisions at sqrt(s)=2.76 TeV in a dataset corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 0.20pb-1 collected with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider in 2011. Jets are identified using the anti-kt algorithm with two radius parameters of 0.4 and 0.6. The inclusive jet double-differential cross-section is presented as a function of the jet transverse momentum pT and jet rapidity y, covering a range of 20 <= pT < 430 GeV and |y| < 4.4. The ratio of the cross-section to the inclusive jet cross-section measurement at sqrt…
Inclusive isolated-photon production in $pp$ collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV is studied with the ATLAS detector at the LHC using a data set with an integrated luminosity of 3.2 fb$^{-1}$. The cross section is measured as a function of the photon transverse energy above 125 GeV in different regions of photon pseudorapidity. Next-to-leading-order perturbative QCD and Monte Carlo event-generator predictions are compared to the cross-section measurements and provide an adequate description of the data.
Energetic primary cosmic rays entering the Earth's atmosphere generate flux of secondary particles including neutrinos. Muon neutrinos passed through the Earth and produced muons via the charged current reaction can be registered by experimental setups intended for the measurements with colliding beams. Due to large geometrical size and advanced muon detecting system such detectors as ATLAS and CMS on LHC have chance to contribute also into the neutrino physics. The estimation of possible rates of up-going muons produced by neutrinos is given.
The performance of the ATLAS muon trigger system is evaluated with proton-proton collision data collected in 2012 at the Large Hadron Collider at a centre-of-mass energy of 8 TeV. It is primarily evaluated using events containing a pair of muons from the decay of $Z$ bosons. The efficiency of the single-muon trigger is measured for muons with transverse momentum 25 < $p_T$ < 100 GeV, with a statistical uncertainty of less than 0.01% and a systematic uncertainty of 0.6%. The $p_T$ range for efficiency determination is extended by using muons from decays of $J/ψ$ mesons, $W$ bosons, and top quar…
We present the measurement of the inclusive electron spectrum in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV, using 1.3 pb-1 of data collected by the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider. Signal electrons in the transverse momentum range 7 < pt < 26 GeV and within |eta| <2.0, excluding 1.37<|eta|<1.52, are extracted from the dominant hadron and conversion backgrounds. After subtraction of the small W/Z/gamma* contribution, the cross-section as a function of pt is found to be in good agreement with theoretical predictions for heavy flavour production from Fixed Order N…
A measurement of the b-hadron production cross section in proton-proton collisions at sqrt(s)=7 TeV is presented. The dataset, corresponding to 85 inverse nanobarns, was recorded with the CMS experiment at the LHC using a low-threshold single-muon trigger. Events are selected by the presence of a muon with transverse momentum greater than 6 GeV with respect to the beam direction and pseudorapidity less than 2.1. The transverse momentum of the muon with respect to the closest jet discriminates events containing b hadrons from background. The inclusive b-hadron production cross section is presen…
An inclusive search for the non-Standard Model production of two isolated leptons of the same electrical charge is presented. The search was performed with 2010 collision data in the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider for ee, eμ, and μμ channels. With 34 pb-1 of integrated luminosity, no disagreement with the Standard Model prediction was found, and limits on the fiducial cross section for generic same-sign production as well as four model-dependent limits for models of new physics were set. An updated same sign analysis with 1.6 fb-1 is underway and nearly complete for the μμ channel…
At the LHC, muons are produced in many final states and used in a variety of analysis, such as Standard Model precision measurements and searches for new physics. The B-physics programme in ATLAS includes the measurement of CP violating effects in B meson decays, the search for rare b decay signatures, as well as the study of the production cross sections. The ATLAS detector can identify muons with high purity in a transverse momentum ($p_{T}$) range from a few GeV to several TeV. In order to achieve a high trigger efficiency for low $p_{T}$ di-muon events and at the same time keep an acceptab…
The status of the commissioning of the ATLAS experiment as of May 2008 is presented. The sub-detector integration in recent milestone weeks is described. Cosmic commissioning in milestone week M6 included simultaneous data-taking and combined track analysis of the muon detector and inner detector, as well as combined analysis of muon detector and muon trigger. The calorimeters have achieved near-full operation, and are integrated with the calorimeter trigger. The high-level-trigger infrastructure is being installed and algorithms tested in technical runs.
The inclusive $t\bar{t}$ production cross-section is measured in the lepton+jets channel using 20.2 fb$^{-1}$ of proton--proton collision data at a centre-of-mass energy of 8 TeV recorded with the ATLAS detector at the LHC. Major systematic uncertainties due to the modelling of the jet energy scale and $b$-tagging efficiency are constrained by separating selected events into three disjoint regions. In order to reduce systematic uncertainties in the most important background, the W+jets process is modelled using Z+jets events in a data-based approach. The inclusive $t\bar{t}$ cross-section is m…
We have studied inclusive muon events using all the data collected by the TOPAZ detector at sqrt(s)=58 GeV with an integrated luminosity of 273pb-1. From 1328 inclusive muon events, we measured the ratio R_qq of the cross section for qq-bar production to the total hadronic cross section and forward-backward asymmetry A^q_FB for b and c quarks. The obtained results are R_bb = 0.13+-0.02(stat)+-0.01(syst), R_cc = 0.36+-0.05(stat)+-0.05(syst), A^b_FB = -0.20+-0.16(stat)+-0.01(syst) and A^c_FB = -0.17+-0.14(stat)+-0.02(syst), in fair agreement with a prediction of the standard model.

The data are compared to expectations based on next-to-leading order QCD calculations corrected for non-perturbative effects, as well as to next-to-leading order Monte…
The inclusive as well as differential cross section of the associated production of top-antitop quark pairs and a $Z$ boson ($t\bar{t}Z$) is measured in final states with exactly three or four isolated leptons (electrons or muons). For this purpose, the full LHC Run 2 dataset of proton-proton collisions recorded by the ATLAS detector from $2015$ to $2018$, which corresponds to an integrated luminosity of $139\,\text{fb}^{-1}$, is used. The inclusive production cross section is measured to be $σ_{t\bar{t}Z}=1.05\pm0.05\,(\text{stat.})\,\pm0.09\,(\text{syst.})\,\text{pb}$, which is in agreement …
This paper presents a study of the performance of the muon reconstruction in the analysis of proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$=7 TeV at the LHC, recorded by the ATLAS detector in 2010. This performance is described in terms of reconstruction and isolation efficiencies and momentum resolutions for different classes of reconstructed muons. The results are obtained from an analysis of J/$ψ$ meson and Z boson decays to dimuons, reconstructed from a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 40~$pb^{-1}$. The measured performance is compared to Monte Carlo predictions and deviati…

We present a measurement of the muon neutrino-nucleon inclusive charged current cross-section, off an isoscalar target, in the neutrino energy range $2.5 \leq E_ν\leq 40$ GeV. The significance of this measurement is its precision, $\pm 4$% in $2.5 \leq E_ν\leq 10$ GeV, and $\pm 2.6$% in $10 \leq E_ν\leq 40$ GeV regions, where significant uncertainties in previous experiments still exist, and its importance to the current and proposed long baseline neutrino oscillation experiments.
The ATLAS detector has been designed to have good muon momentum resolution up to momenta in the TeV range. The muon momentum resolution of the ATLAS spectrometer has been measured with p-p collision data recorded in 2011. The measurement combines the di-muon mass resolution in J/Ψ->μμand Z->μμdecays with measurements of the alignment accuracy of the detector based on straight muon tracks, which are acquired with special runs without magnetic field in the ATLAS detector.
A search is performed for collimated muon pairs displaced from the primary vertex produced in the decay of long-lived neutral particles in proton-proton collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV centre-of-mass energy, with the ATLAS detector at the LHC. In a 1.9 fb-1 event sample collected during 2011, the observed data are consistent with the Standard Model background expectations. Limits on the product of the production cross section and the branching ratio of a Higgs boson decaying to hidden-sector neutral long-lived particles are derived as a function of the particles' mean lifetime.
We present a measurement of two-particle angular correlations in proton-proton collisions at sqrt(s) = 900 GeV and 7 TeV. The collision events were collected during 2009 and 2010 with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider using a single-arm minimum bias trigger. Correlations are measured for charged particles produced in the kinematic range of transverse momentum pT > 100 MeV and pseudorapidity |eta| < 2.5. A complex structure in pseudorapidity and azimuth is observed at both collision energies. Results are compared to Pythia 8 and Herwig++ as well as to the AMBT2B, DW and Perugia 20…
A first measurement of the ttgamma cross section in pp collisions at the LHC using 1.04 fb^-1 of data taken with the ATLAS detector is presented. A total of 122 candidate events were identified in the single electron and single muon channels. The contributions from background processes with prompt photons, and with electrons or hadrons misidentified as photons were estimated reducing the dependence on simulations by the use of data-driven techniques. The resulting cross section times branching ratio into the single lepton and dilepton decay channels for photons with pt > 8 GeV reads σ_ttgamma …
The production cross sections of the inclusive Drell-Yan processes W to l nu and Z/gamma to ll (l=e,mu) are measured in proton-proton collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV with the ATLAS detector. The cross sections are reported integrated over a fiducial kinematic range, extrapolated to the full range and also evaluated differentially as a function of the W decay lepton pseudorapidity and the Z boson rapidity, respectively. Based on an integrated luminosity of about 35 pb^-1 collected in 2010, the precision of these measurements reaches a few per cent. The integrated and the differential W+- and Z/ga…

This measurement is used together with the cross sections for inclusive deep inelastic ep scatterin…
Despite the absence of experimental evidence, weak scale supersymmetry remains one of the best motivated and studied Standard Model extensions. This report summarises recent ATLAS results on inclusive searches for supersymmetric squarks and gluinos, including third generation squarks produced in the decay of gluinos. Results are presented for both R-parity conserving and R-parity violating scenarios, with final states containing jets with and without missing transverse momentum, light leptons, taus or photons.
The muon spectrometer of the ATLAS experiment is one of the largest detectors ever built. At the LHC, new physics signs could appear through high momentun muons (1 TeV). Identification and precise momentum measurement of such muons are two of the main challenges of the ATLAS muon spectrometer. In order to get a good resolution for high energy muons (i.e. 10% at 1 TeV), the accuracy on the alignment of precision chambers must be of the order of 50 microns. Several procedures have been developed to reach such a precision. This document describes complementary techniques used to align the muon su…

Jet cross sections have been measured for the first time in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV using the ATLAS detector. The measurement uses an integrated luminosity of 17 nb-1 recorded at the Large Hadron Collider. The anti-kt algorithm is used to identify jets, with two jet resolution parameters, R = 0.4 and 0.6. The dominant uncertainty comes from the jet energy scale, which is determined to within 7% for central jets above 60 GeV transverse momentum. Inclusive single-jet differential cross sections are presented as functions of jet transverse momentum and rapidit…

The inclusive production of four isolated charged leptons in $pp$ collisions is analysed for the presence of hard double-parton scattering, using 20.2 fb$^{-1}$ of data recorded in the ATLAS detector at the LHC at centre-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s}$ = 8 TeV. In the four-lepton invariant-mass range of $80<m_{4\ell}<1000$ GeV, an artificial neural network is used to enhance the separation between single- and double-parton scattering based on the kinematics of the four leptons in the final state. An upper limit on the fraction of events originating from double-parton scattering is determined at 95% …

With a sample of more than twenty million $W \rightarrow μν$ events, the statistical precision is greatly improved in comparison to previous measurements. These new results provide additional constraints on the parton distribution functions of the proton in the range of the Bjorken scaling variable $x$ from $10^{-3}$ to $10^{-1}$. These measurements ar…
The momentum measurement capability of the ATLAS muon spectrometer relies fundamentally on the intrinsic single-hit spatial resolution of the monitored drift tube precision tracking chambers. Optimal resolution is achieved with a dedicated calibration program that addresses the specific operating conditions of the 354000 high-pressure drift tubes in the spectrometer. The calibrations consist of a set of timing offsets and drift time to drift distance transfer relations, and result in chamber resolution functions. This paper describes novel algorithms to obtain precision calibrations from data …

This article documents the muon reconstruction and identification efficiency obtained by the ATLAS experiment for 139 fb$^{-1}$ of $pp$ collision data at $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV collected between 2015 and 2018 during Run 2 of the LHC. The increased instantaneous luminosity delivered by the LHC over this period required a reoptimisation of the criteria for the identification of prompt muons. Improved and newly developed algorithms were deployed to preserve high muon identification efficiency with a low misidentification rate and good momentum resolution. The availability of large samples of $Z\toμμ$ …
A new search signature for excited leptons is explored. Excited muons are sought in the channel $pp \to μμ^* \to μμ\textrm{ jet jet}$, assuming both the production and decay occur via a contact interaction. The analysis is based on 20.3 fb$^{-1}$ of $pp$ collision data at a centre-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}$ = 8 TeV taken with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. No evidence of excited muons is found, and limits are set at the 95% confidence level on the cross section times branching ratio as a function of the excited-muon mass $m_{μ^*}$. For $m_{μ^*}$ between 1.3 TeV and 3.0 TeV,…
Recent measurements of the inclusive top pair production at the Tevatron and LHC collider in the electron/muon final states are discussed. Measurements at the Tevatron use up to 9.7 /fb of data, and at the LHC up to 4.9 /fb of data at $\sqrt{s}=7$ TeV and up to 20.3 /fb of data at $\sqrt{s}=8$ TeV. For the experiments at both colliders these corresponds to the full data sets at the given center-of-mass energies. Overall results are in agreement between the experiments at the Tevatron and between the experiments at the LHC. All measurements are in agreement with recent theory calculations at NN…
The ATLAS muon spectrometer is designed to measure muon momenta with a resolution of 4% @ 100 GeV/c rising to 10% @ 1 TeV/c track momentum. The spectrometer consists of precision tracking and trigger chambers embedded in a 2T magnetic field generated by three large air-core superconducting toroids. The precision detectors provide 50 micron tracking resolution to a pseudo-rapidity of 2.7. The system also includes an optical monitoring system which measures detector positions with 40 micron precision. This paper reports on the calibration and performance of the ATLAS muon spectrometer.
The performance of the three-level ATLAS muon trigger as evaluated by using LHC data is presented. Events have been selected by using only the hardware-based Level-1 trigger in order to commission and to subsequently enable the (software-based) selections of the High Level Trigger. Studies aiming at selecting prompt muons from J/ψ and at reducing non prompt muon contamination have been performed. A brief overview on how the muon triggers evolve with increasing luminosity is given.

The data sample used corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 2.05 fb^-1. Events with an isolated electron or muon and a tau lepton decaying hadronically are used. In addition, a large missing transverse momentum and two or more energetic jets are required. At least one of the jets must be identified as originating from a b quark. The measured cross section, sigma_ttbar = 186+/- 13 (stat) +/- 20 (syst) +/- 7 (…
The inclusive production of the omega(782) vector meson in hadronic Z decays is measured and compared to model predictions. The analysis is based on 4 million hadronic Z decays recorded by the ALEPH detector between 1991 and 1995. The production rate for x_p = p_meson/p_beam > 0.05 is measured in the omega -> pi^+ pi^- pi^0 decay mode and found to be 0.585 +- 0.019_stat +- 0.033_sys per event. Inclusive eta meson production is also measured in the same decay channel for x_p > 0.10, obtaining 0.355 +- 0.011_stat +- 0.024_sys per event. The branching ratio for omega -> mu^+ mu^- is investigated.…
A search is presented for pair-production of long-lived neutral particles using 33 fb$^{-1}$ of $\sqrt{s} = 13$ TeV proton-proton collision data, collected during 2016 by the ATLAS detector at the LHC. This search focuses on a topology in which one long-lived particle decays in the ATLAS inner detector and the other decays in the muon spectrometer. Special techniques are employed to reconstruct the displaced tracks and vertices in the inner detector and in the muon spectrometer. One event is observed that passes the full event selection, which is consistent with the estimated background. Limit…
A set of measurements of azimuthal asymmetries in the production of pairs of identified hadrons in deep-inelastic scattering of muons on transversely polarised $^6$LiD (deuteron) and NH$_3$ (proton) targets is presented. All available data collected in the years 2002-2004 and 2007/2010 with the COMPASS spectrometer using a muon beam of 160 GeV/$c$ at the CERN SPS were analysed. The asymmetries provide access to the transversity distribution functions via a fragmentation function that in principle may be independently obtained from $e^+e^-$ annihilation data. Results are presented, discussed an…
The LHC copiously produces muons via different processes, and the muon sample will be large at the high-luminosity LHC (HL-LHC). In this work we propose to leverage this large muon sample and utilize the HL-LHC as a muon fixed-target experiment, with the ATLAS calorimeter as the target. We consider a novel analysis for the ATLAS detector, which takes advantage of the two independent muon momentum measurements by the inner detector and the muon system. We show that a comparison of the two measurements, before and after the calorimeters, can probe new force carriers that are coupled to muons and…
