The dilaton, a pseudo-Nambu-Goldstone boson appearing in spontaneous scale symmetry breaking at a TeV scale f, may be found in Higgs boson searches. The dilaton couples to standard model fermions and weak bosons with the same structure as the Higgs boson except for the overall strength. Additionally, the dilaton couples to a Higgs boson pair. The couplings of the dilaton to a gluon pair and a photon pair, appearing at loop level, are largely enhanced compared to the corresponding Higgs couplings. We present regions of the mass and VEV of the dilaton allowed by WW, ZZ, and gammagamma limits from the LHC at 7 TeV with 1.0-2.3 fb-1 integrated luminosity. A scale of f less than 1 TeV is nearly excluded. We discuss how the dilaton chi can be distinguished from the Higgs boson h by observation of the decays chi -> gammagamma and chi -> hh -> (WW)(WW).
In this paper, we explore the possibility that a light dilaton can be the first sign of new physics at the LHC. The dilaton could emerge in approximate scale invariant UV completions of the SM as the Goldstone boson associated with the spontaneous breaking of the scale invariance. We study in detail the phenomenology of the dilaton at the LHC in the mass range of [$10-300$] GeV including the case where the dilaton can mix with the SM Higgs boson, leading to an interesting interplay between direct and indirect constraints. A possibility that the dilaton acts as a portal to a dark sector is also…
We study soft wall models that can embed the Standard Model and a naturally light dilaton. Exploiting the full capabilities of these models we identify the parameter space that allows to pass Electroweak Precision Tests with a moderate Kaluza-Klein scale, around $2$ TeV. We analyze the coupling of the dilaton with Standard Model (SM) fields in the bulk, and discuss two applications: i) Models with a light dilaton as the first particle beyond the SM pass quite easily all observational tests even with a dilaton lighter than the Higgs. However the possibility of a 125 GeV dilaton as a Higgs impos…

We study the extension of the Standard Model (SM) with a light dilaton in a five dimensional warped model. In particular, we analyze the coupling of the dilaton with the SM matter fields, compare the model predictions with Electroweak Precisions Tests and find the corresponding bounds on the mass of the lightest Kaluza-Klein modes. We also investigate the possibility that the Higgs-like resonance found at the LHC can be a dilaton. Finally, we show that our set-up can also provide an explanation of the anomalies recently observed in $B$-meson decays.
We explore the potential for the discovery of a dilaton $\mathcal{O}(200-500)$ GeV in a classical scale/conformal invariant extension of the Standard Model by investigating the size of the corresponding breaking scale $Λ$ at the LHC, extending a previous analysis. In particular, we address the recent bounds on $Λ$ derived from Higgs boson searches. We investigate if such a dilaton can be produced via gluon-gluon fusion, presenting rates for its decay either into a pair of Higgs bosons or into two heavy gauge bosons, which can give rise to multi-leptonic final states. A detailed analysis via PY…
Whether an additional light scalar exists is an interesting topic beyond the Standard Model (SM), while nowadays we do not know exactly physics beyond the SM in the low mass region, e.g., the Atlas and CMS collaborations get inconsistent results at around 95 GeV in searching for light resonances in diphoton channel. Considering these, we study a light scalar in the Minimal Dilaton Model (MDM). Under the theoretical and latest experimental constraints, we sort the surviving samples into two scenarios according to the diphoton rate of the light scalar: the large-diphoton scenario (with $/SM\gtrs…
The 125 GeV boson is quite consistent with the Higgs boson of the Standard Model (SM), but there is a challenge from Anderson whether this particle is in the Lagrangian. As LHC Run 2 takes its final year of running, we ought to reflect and make sure we have gotten everything right. The ATLAS and CMS combined Run 1 analysis claims 5.4$σ$ measurement of vector boson fusion (VBF) production that is consistent with SM, which seemingly refutes Anderson. However, to verify the source of electroweak symmetry breaking (EWSB), we caution that VBF measurement is too important for us to be imprudent in a…
We consider a strongly interacting twin Higgs (SITH) model where an ultraviolet completion of twin Higgs mechanism is realized by a strongly coupled approximately scale invariant theory. Besides the Standard Model (SM) and twin sectors, the low energy effective theory contains a relatively light scalar called a dilaton --- the pseudo Goldstone boson of spontaneously broken scale invariance. The dilaton provides a unique portal between the SM and twin sectors whose phenomenology could provide an important probe of the twin Higgs mechanism. As a concrete example, we consider a holographic twin H…
Current data from the LHC indicate that the 125 GeV Higgs boson, $H$, is either the single Higgs of the Standard Model or, to a good approximation, an "aligned Higgs". We propose that $H$ is the pseudo-Goldstone dilaton of Gildener and Weinberg. Models based on their mechanism of scale symmetry breaking can naturally account for the Higgs boson's low mass and aligned couplings. We conjecture that they are the only way to achieve a "Higgslike dilaton" that is actually the Higgs boson. These models further imply the existence of additional Higgs bosons in the vicinity of 200 to about 550 GeV. We…
We study very light dilaton, arising from a scale-invariant ultraviolet theory of the Higgs sector in the standard model of particle physics. Imposing the scale symmetry below the ultraviolet scale of the Higgs sector, we alleviate the fine-tuning problem associated with the Higgs mass. When the electroweak symmetry is spontaneously broken radiatively à la Coleman-Weinberg, the dilaton develops a vacuum expectation value away from the origin to give an extra contribution to the Higgs potential so that the Higgs mass becomes naturally around the electroweak scale. The ultraviolet scale of the H…
A genuine dilaton $σ$ allows scales to exist even in the limit of exact conformal invariance. In gauge theories, these may occur at an infrared fixed point (IRFP) $α_{\text{IR}}$ through dimensional transmutation. These large scales at $α_{\text{IR}}$ can be separated from small scales produced by $θ^μ_μ$, the trace of the energy-momentum tensor. For quantum chromodynamics (QCD), the conformal limit can be combined with chiral $SU(3) \times SU(3)$ symmetry to produce chiral-scale perturbation theory $χ$PT$_σ$, with $f_0(500)$ as the dilaton. The technicolor (TC) analogue of this is crawling TC…
We propose an inflationary scenario based on a many-flavor hidden QCD with eight flavors, which realizes the almost scale-invariant (walking) gauge dynamics. The theory predicts two types of composite (pseudo) Nambu-Goldstone bosons, the pions and the lightest scalar (dilaton) associated with the spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking and its simultaneous violation of the approximate scale invariance. The dilaton acts as an inflaton, where the inflaton potential is induced by the nonperturbative-scale anomaly linked with the underlying theory. The inflaton potential parameters are highly constra…
