We present photoelectric and spectral observations of a hot candidate proto-planetary nebula - early B-type supergiant with emission lines in spectrum - IRAS 19336-0400. The light and color curves display fast irregular brightness variations with maximum amplitudes dV=0.30 mag, dB=0.35 mag, dU=0.40 mag and color-brightness correlations. By the variability characteristics IRAS 19336-0400 appears similar to other hot proto-planetary nebulae. Based on low-resolution spectra in the range lambda 4000-7500 A we have derived absolute intensities of the emission lines H_alpha, H_beta, H_gamma, [SII], [NII], physical conditions in gaseous nebula: n_e=10^4 cm^{-3}, T_e=7000 \pm 1000 K. The emission line H_alpha, H_beta equivalent widths are found to be considerably variable and related to light changes. By UBV-photometry and spectroscopy the color excess has been estimated: E(B-V)=0.50-0.54. Joint photometric and spectral data analysis allows us to assume that the star variability is caused by stellar wind variations.
We present medium resolution (1000) K-band spectra of 12 post-AGB candidates and related stars. For several objects in our sample, these spectra were obtained for the first time. The Br$γ$ line in emission is detected in seven objects indicating the onset of photo-ionization in these objects. Four objects show the presence of He i line. We detect H2 emission line in the spectra of IRAS 06556+1623, IRAS 22023+5249, IRAS 18062+2410 and IRAS 20462+3416. H2 emission line ratio 1-0 S(1)/2-1 S(1) indicate that H2 is radiatively excited due to the UV radiation of hot post-AGB central stars. When comp…
Hot (OB) post-AGB stars are immediate progenitors of planetary nebulae (PNe). Very few hot post-AGB stars are known. Detecting new hot post-AGB candidates and follow-up multiwavelength studies will enable us to further understand the processes during the post-AGB evolution that lead to the formation of PNe. Case-Hamburg OB star surveys and their extension (LS, LSS, and LSE catalogues) and IRAS (point source) catalogues are good sources for detecting new hot post-AGB candidates from low resolution spectroscopy. Spectral types are determined from low resolution optical spectra of 44 stars select…
We intended to study the incidence and characteristics of water masers in the envelopes of stars in the post-AGB and PN evolutionary stages. We have used the 64-m antenna in Parkes (Australia) to search for water maser emission at 22 GHz, towards a sample of 74 sources with IRAS colours characteristic of post-AGB stars and PNe, at declination $< -32 °$. In our sample, 39% of the sources are PNe or PNe candidates, and 50% are post-AGB stars or post-AGB candidates. We have detected four new water masers, all of them in optically obscured sources: three in PNe candidates (IRAS 12405-6219, IRAS 15…
We have derived elemental abundances for a sample of nine IRAS sources with colours similar to those of post-AGB stars. For IRAS 01259+6823, IRAS 05208-2035, IRAS 04535+3747 and IRAS 08187-1905 this is the first detailed abundance analysis based upon high resolution spectra. Mild indication of s-processing for IRAS 01259+6823, IRAS 05208-2035 and IRAS 08187-1905 have been found and a more comprehensive study of s-process enhanced objects IRAS 17279-1119 and IRAS 22223+4327 have been carried out. We have also made a contemporary abundance analysis of the high galactic latitude supergiants BD+39…
We have done a detailed abundance analysis of four unexplored candidate post- Asymptotic Giant Branch(AGB) stars IRAS 13110 - 6629, IRAS 17579 - 3121, IRAS 18321 - 1401 and IRAS 18489 - 0629 using high resolution spectra. We have constructed Spectral Energy Distributions (SED) for these objects using the existing photometric data combined with infrared (IR) fluxes. For all sample stars, the SEDs exhibit double peaked energy distribution with well separated IR peaks showing the presence of dusty circumstellar material. The CNO abundances indicate the production of N via CN cycling, but observed…
Using a revised version of the catalog of AGB stars by Suh & Kwon (2009), we present various infrared two-colour diagrams (2CDs) for 3003 O-rich, 1168 C-rich, 362 S-type and 35 silicate carbon stars in our Galaxy. For each object in the new catalog, we cross-identify the AKARI, MSX and 2MASS counterparts by finding the nearest one from the position information in the IRAS PSC. For the large sample of AGB stars, we present infrared two-colour diagrams using IRAS (PSC), AKARI (PSC and BSC), MSX (PSC) and near infrared (K and L bands; including 2MASS data at KS band) data for different classes of…
We present the results of a 22GHz H2O maser survey toward a new sample of AGB and post-AGB star candidates. Most of the objects are selected for the first time based on the AKARI data, which have high flux sensitivity in the mid-infrared ranges. We aim at finding H2O maser sources in the transient phase between the AGB and post-AGB stage of evolution, where the envelopes start to develop large deviations from spherical symmetry. The observations were carried out with the Effelsberg 100m radio telescope. Among 204 observed objects, 63 detections (36 new) were obtained. We found 4 objects which …
From an analysis of absorption lines in the high resolution spectra we have derived the radial velocities, stellar parameters (Teff, gravity, wind-strength parameter logQ and projected rotational velocity) and abundances (C, N, O, and Si ) of IRAS 17460-3114, IRAS 18131-3008, IRAS 19336-0400, LSE 45 and LSE 163. Abundances are found to be solar, except for a low Si abundance in IRAS 19336-0400 and a mild CNO pattern in LSE 163, that rotates at an unusual large rotational velocity for its spectral classification. Combining the stellar parameters information with Gaia DR2 data we are able to der…
Recently Kamath et al. (2021) analysed Gaia EDR3 data of eighteen post-AGB supergiants with overabundance of s-process elements. For some of these stars in their sample they find unusually very low absolute luminosities which is not in agreement with the s-process nucleosynthesis on the AGB stage of evolution. It appears that they have not taken into account the RUWE values of these stars. I have taken a look at the RUWE values of these eighteen post-AGB stars with over abundance of s-process elements. Of the eighteen stars thirteen have RUWE values much greater than 1.4 and hence their distan…
New UBV-photometry obtained in 2000-2008 is presented for the post-AGB star IRAS 22272+5435=V354 Lac. The star showed semi-regular light variations with varying amplitudes. The maximal amplitude did not exceed 0.5 in V-band. For 2000-2008, we have found a photometric period near 128 days. The analysis of long-term observations in 1990-2008 reveals variations with two close periods: 128 and 131 days, causing amplitude modulation. The V-(B-V) diagram shows a clear correlation: the star is generally bluer when brighter. From our UBV data, we derive E(B-V)=0.5 and conclude that the spectral type o…
During the last years, many observational studies have revealed that binaries play an active role in the shaping of non spherical planetary nebulae. We review the different works that lead to the direct or indirect evidence for the presence of binary companions during the Asymptotic Giant Branch, proto-Planetary Nebula and Planetary Nebula phases. We also discuss how these binaries can influence the stellar evolution and possible future directions in the field.
We report the first detection of buckminsterfullerene (C60) in a proto-planetary nebula (PPN). The vibrational transitions of C60 at 7.0, 17.4, and 18.9um are detected in the Spitzer/IRS spectrum of IRAS 01005+7910. This detection suggests that fullerenes are formed shortly after the asymptotic giant branch but before the planetary nebulae stage. A comparison with the observations of C60 in other sources is made and the implication on circumstellar chemistry is discussed.
This review presents the latest advances in the nebular studies of post-AGB objects. Post-AGB stars are great tools to test nucleosynthesis and evolution models for stars of low and intermediate masses, and the evolution of dust in harsh environment. I will present the newly discovered class of post-RGB stars, formed via binary interaction on the RGB. Binary systems can also lead to the formation of two class of aspherical post-AGB, the Proto-Planetary Nebulae and the naked post-AGBs (dusty RV Taus , a.k.a. Van Winckel's stars).
The high-resolution ($R\sim48\,000$) optical spectrum of the B-type supergiant LS 5112, identified as the optical counterpart of the post-AGB candidate IRAS 18379-1707, is analysed. We report the detailed identifications of the observed absorption and emission features in the wavelength range 3700-9200 A for the first time. The absorption line spectrum has been analysed using non-LTE model atmosphere techniques to determine stellar atmospheric parameters and chemical composition. We estimate $T_\text{eff}=18~000\pm1000$ K, $\log g=2.25\pm0.08$, $ξ_{\rm t}=10\pm4$ km/s and $v \sin i=37\pm6$ km/…
We focus here on one particular and poorly studied object, IRAS11472-0800. It is a highly evolved post-Asymptotic Giant Branch (post-AGB) star of spectral type F, with a large infrared excess produced by thermal emission of circumstellar dust. We deploy a multi-wavelength study which includes the analyses of optical and IR spectra as well as a variability study based on photometric and spectroscopic time-series. The spectral energy distribution (SED) properties as well as the highly processed silicate N-band emission show that the dust in IRAS11472-0800 is likely trapped in a stable disc. The …
Context: Post-Asymptotic Giant Branch (AGB) binaries are surrounded by stable dusty and gaseous disks similar to the ones around young stellar objects. Whereas significant effort is spent on modeling observations of disks around young stellar objects, the disks around post-AGB binaries receive significantly less attention, even though they pose significant constraints on theories of disk physics and binary evolution. Aims: We want to examine the structure of and phenomena at play in circumbinary disks around post-AGB stars. We continue the analysis of our near-infrared interferometric image of…
We present a high resolution detailed abundance analysis for a sample of six post-AGB candidate stars, five of them had not been studied spectroscopically in the optical region. All the analyzed objects are IRAS sources identified as possible post-AGB on the two-colours IRAS diagram. We find three objects with clear signs of evolved stars; IRAS 05338-3051 shows abundances similar to the RV Tauri V453 Oph; the lower-luminosity stars IRAS 18025 - 3906 is O-rich without s-process enrichment and IRAS 18386 - 1253 shows a moderate selective depletion of refractory elements generally seen in post-AG…
The first high-resolution (R~50,000) optical spectrum of the B-type star, LS III +52 24, identified as the optical counterpart of the hot post-AGB candidate IRAS 22023+5249 (I22023) is presented. We report the detailed identifications of the observed absorption and emission features in the full wavelength range (4290-9015 A) as well as the atmospheric parameters and photospheric abundances (under the Local Thermodinamic Equilibrium approximation) for the first time. The nebular parameters (Te, Ne) are also derived. We estimate Teff=24,000 K, log g=3.0, xi=7 kms-1 and the derived abundances ind…
There is a class of binary post-AGB stars with a remarkable near-infrared excess that are surrounded by Keplerian or quasi-Keplerian disks and extended outflows composed of gas escaping from the disk. The Keplerian dynamics had been well identified in four cases, namely the Red Rectangle, AC Her, IW Car, and IRAS 08544-4431. In these objects, the mass of the outflow represents ~ 10 % of the nebular mass, the disk being the dominant component of the nebula. We present interferometric NOEMA maps of 12CO and 13CO J=2-1 in 89 Her and 12CO J=2-1 in AC Her, IRAS 19125+0343, and R Sct. Several proper…
IRAS18197-1118 is a stellar-like object that has been classified as a planetary nebula from its radio continuum emission and high [SIII]9532 to Paschen9 line intensity ratio, as derived from direct images. We present intermediate- and high-resolution, optical spectroscopy, VLA 8.46 GHz radio continuum data, and narrow-band optical images of IRAS18197-1118 aimed at confirming its planetary nebula nature, and analyzing its properties. The optical spectrum shows that IRAS18197-1118 is a medium-excitation planetary nebula suffering a high extinction (c(H_beta) ~3.37). The optical images do not res…
Water maser emission at 22 GHz is a useful probe to study the transition between the nearly spherical mass-loss in the AGB to a collimated one in the post-AGB phase. In their turn, collimated jets in the post-AGB phase could determine the shape of planetary nebulae (PNe) once photoionization starts. We intend to find new cases of post-AGB stars and PNe with water maser emission, including water fountains or water-maser-emitting PNe. We observed water maser emission in a sample of 133 objects, with a significant fraction being post-AGB and young PN candidate sources with strong obscuration. We …
We present 2 to 2.4 micron integral field spectroscopy of a sample of hot post-AGB stars with early-B spectral types, using the NIFS instrument on Gemini North. These stars are just beginning to ionize their immediate environments and turn into planetary nebulae (PNe).We use molecular hydrogen emission lines together with hydrogen and helium recombination lines to explore the distribution of molecular and atomic gas and the extent of the developing ionized region. We see a range of evolutionary stages: IRAS 18062+2410 and IRAS 18379-1707 have recently developed compact and unresolved regions o…
The strongest absorption features with the lower-level excitation potentials $χ_{\rm low}<1$ eV are found to be split in the high-resolution optical spectra of the post-AGB star V354 Lac taken in 2007--2008. Main parameters, T$_{eff}$=5650 K, $\log g$=0.2, $ξ_t$=5.0 km/s, and the abundances of 22 chemical elements in the star's atmosphere are found. The overabundance of the $s$-process chemical elements (Ba, La, Ce, Nd) in the star's atmosphere is partly due to the splitting of strong lines of the ions of these metals. The peculiarities of the spectrum in the wavelength interval containing the…

Many aspects of the evolutionary phase in which Asymptotic Giant Branch stars (AGB stars) are in transition to become Planetary Nebulae (PNe) are still poorly understood. An important question is how the circumstellar envelopes of AGB stars switch from spherical symmetry to the axially symmetric structures frequently observed in PNe. In many cases there is clear evidence that the shaping of the circumstellar envelopes of PNe is linked to the formation of jets/collimated winds and their interaction with the remnant AGB envelope. Because of the short evolutionary time, objects in this phase are …
We present various infrared two-color diagrams (2CDs) for AGB stars, post-AGB stars, and Planetary Nebulae (PNe) and investigate possible evolutionary tracks. We use catalogs from the available literature for the sample of 4903 AGB stars (3373 O-rich; 1168 C-rich; 362 S-type), 660 post-AGB stars (326 post-AGB; 334 pre-PNe), and 1510 PNe in our Galaxy. For each object in the catalog, we cross-identify the IRAS, AKARI, MSX, and 2MASS counterparts. The IR 2CDs can provide useful information about the structure and evolution of the dust envelopes as well as the central stars. To find possible evol…
Planetary Nebulae (PNe) evolve from Asymptotic Giant Branch (AGB) stars after a brief post-AGB phase. Water maser emission is characteristic of oxygen-rich AGB stars, is observed in post-AGB stars and, unexpectedly, has been detected in three PNe (IRAS17347-3139, IRAS18061-2505 and IRAS19255+2123) where the physical conditions to generate water maser emission did not seem to exist. These three objects may be considered as the youngest PNe known up to date and, therefore, they are key objects to understand the formation of PNe. In addition, the existence of water maser PNe allow us to study eve…
Through CO mm-line and optical spectroscopy, we investigate the properties of the Fried Egg nebula IRAS 17163-3907, which has recently been proposed to be one of the rare members of the yellow hypergiant class. The CO J=2-1 and J=3-2 emission arises from a region within 20" of the star and is clearly associated with the circumstellar material. The CO lines show a multi-component asymmetrical profile, and an unexpected velocity gradient is resolved in the east-west direction, suggesting a bipolar outflow. This is in contrast with the apparent symmetry of the dust envelope as observed in the inf…
We present AKARI/IRC and Spitzer/IRS observations of a selected sample of galactic IRAS sources considered to be heavily obscured AGB/post-AGB stars based on their characteristic IRAS colours. All of them are completely invisible in the optical range but extremely bright in the infrared. Based on AKARI and Spitzer spectroscopy and using DUSTY we are able to determine the dominant chemistry of their circumstellar shells as well as the properties of the dust grains contained in these shells. Most of the sources are found to be C-rich (being the reddest C-rich stars observed so far). We find only…
We present photoelectric and spectral observations of a hot candidate proto-planetary nebula - early B-type supergiant with emission lines in spectrum - IRAS 19336-0400. The light and color curves display fast irregular brightness variations with maximum amplitudes Delta V=0.30 mag, Delta B=0.35 mag, Delta U=0.40 mag and color-brightness correlations. By the variability characteristics IRAS 19336-0400 appears similar to other hot proto-planetary nebulae. Based on low-resolution spectra in the range lambda 4000-7500 A we have derived absolute intensities of the emission lines H_alpha, H_beta, H…
We present K-band integral field spectroscopy of the bipolar post-AGB object IRAS 18276-1431 (OH 17.7-2.0) using SINFONI on the VLT. This allows us to image both the continuum and molecular features in this object from 1.95-2.45μm with a spatial resolution down to 70 mas and a spectral resolution of approx. 5000. We detect a range of H2 ro-vibrational emission lines which are consistent with shock excitation in regions of dense (approx. 10^7 cm^-3) gas with shock velocities in the range 25 - 30 km/s. The distribution of H2 emission in the bipolar lobes suggests that a fast wind is impinging on…
Based on high-spectral resolution observations performed with the echelle spectrograph NES of the 6-meter telescope, we have studied the peculiarities of the spectrum and the velocity field in the atmosphere and envelope of the optical counterpart of the infrared source IRAS 23304+6347. We have concluded about the absence of significant variations in the radial velocity Vr inferred from atmospheric absorptions and about its coincidence with the systemic velocity deduced from radio data. The envelope expansion velocity Vexp=15.5 km/s has been determined from the positions of rotational band lin…
We present simultaneous observations of H$_2$O maser emission and radio continuum at 1.3 cm carried out with the Australia Telescope Compact Array towards two sources, IRAS 16333$-$4807 and IRAS 12405$-$6219, catalogued as planetary nebula (PN) candidates, and where single-dish detections of H$_2$O masers have been previously reported. Our goal was to unambiguously confirm the spatial association of the H$_2$O masers with these two PN candidates. We detected and mapped H$_2$O maser emission in both fields, but only in IRAS 16333$-$4807 the maser emission is spatially associated with the radio …
We study the grain properties and location of the forsterite crystals in the circumstellar environment of the pre-planetary nebula (PPN) IRAS 17150-3224 in order to learn more about the as yet poorly understood evolutionary phase prior to the PPN. We use the best-fit model for IRAS 17150-3224 of Meixner et al. (2002) and add forsterite to this model. We investigate different spatial distributions and grain sizes of the forsterite crystals in the circumstellar environment. We compare the spectral bands of forsterite in the mid-infrared and at 69 micrometre in radiative transport models to those…
Planetary nebulae retain the signature of the nucleosynthesis and mixing events that occurred during the previous AGB phase. Observational signatures complement observations of AGB and post-AGB stars and their binary companions. The abundances of the elements heavier than iron such as Kr and Xe in planetary nebulae can be used to complement abundances of Sr/Y/Zr and Ba/La/Ce in AGB stars, respectively, to determine the operation of the slow neutron-capture process (the s process) in AGB stars. Additionally, observations of the Rb abundance in Type I planetary nebulae may allow us to infer the …
In the optical spectra of the cold post-AGB supergiant GSC 04050$-$02366, obtained with the 6-meter BTA telescope with a spectral resolution of R$\ge$60000 on arbitrary dates over 2019$÷$2021, a radial velocity variability is found. Heliocentric Vr based on the positional measurements of numerous absorptions varies from date to date with a standard deviation of $Δ$Vr$\approx$1.4 km/s about the average value of Vr=24.75 km/s, which may stem out of the low-amplitude pulsations in the atmosphere. The spectra of the star are purely absorption type, there are no obvious emissions. Intensity variabi…
We investigate infrared properties of OGLE4 Mira variables in our Galaxy. For each object, we cross-identify the AllWISE, 2MASS, Gaia, and IRAS counterparts. We present various IR two-color diagrams (2CDs) and period-magnitude and period-color relations for the Mira variables. Generally, the Mira variables with longer periods are brighter in the IR fluxes and redder in the IR colors. In this work, we also revise and update the previous catalog of AGB stars in our Galaxy using the new sample of OGLE4 Mira variables. Now, we present a new catalog of 74,093 (64,609 O-rich and 9484 C-rich) AGB sta…
Observational evidence for strong magnetic fields throughout the envelopes of evolved stars is increasing. Many of the instruments coming on line in the near-future will be able to make further contributions to this field. Specifically, maser polarization observations and dust/line polarization in the sub-mm regime has the potential to finally provide a definite picture of the magnetic field strength and configuration from the Asymptotic Giant Branch (AGB) all the way to the Planetary Nebula phase. While current observations are limited in sample size, strong magnetic fields appear ubiquitous …
This paper is part of a larger project in which we systematically study the chemical abundances of Galactic and extragalactic post-asymptotic giant branch (post-AGB) stars. Lead (Pb) is the final product of the s-process nucleosynthesis and is predicted to have large overabundances with respect to other s-process elements in AGB stars of low metallicities. However, Pb abundance studies of enriched post-AGB stars in the Magellanic Clouds show the Pb overabundance is not observed. We used high-resolution UVES and HERMES spectra for detailed spectral abundance studies of our sample of 14 Galactic…
Adaptive optics observations in the infrared (VLT/NACO, Kervella et al. 2014) and visible (VLT/SPHERE, Kervella et al. 2015) domains revealed that the nearby AGB star L2 Pup (d=64 pc) is surrounded by a dust disk seen almost edge-on. Thermal emission from a large dust "loop" is detected at 4 microns up to more than 10 AU from the star. We also detect a secondary source at a separation of 32 mas, whose nature is uncertain. L2 Pup is currently a relatively "young" AGB star, so we may witness the formation of a planetary nebula. The mechanism that breaks the spherical symmetry of mass loss is cur…
We report interferometric mapping of the bipolar pre-planetary nebula IRAS 08005-2356 with an angular-resolution of ~1"-5", using the Submillimeter Array (SMA), in the 12CO J=2-1, 3-2, 13CO J=2-1 and SiO J=5-4 (v=0) lines. Single-dish observations, using the SMT 10-m, were made in these lines as well as in the CO J=4-3 and SiO J-6-5 (v=0) lines. The lines profiles are very broad, showing the presence of a massive (>0.1 Msun), extreme high-velocity outflow (V~200 km/s) directed along the nebular symmetry axis derived from the HST imaging of this object. The outflow's scalar momentum far exceeds…
AGB stars appear to lose mass spherically, but many PNe resulting from the AGB mass-loss have non-spherical morphologies. Compact disks have been found in some bipolar PNe, but their role in the shaping process remains unknown. Compact Keplarian disks are found to be common around post-AGB binaries, however, these objects may never develop into PNe. Another group of post-AGB stars, known as pre-PNe, are surrounded by collimated nebulae shining by reflected light or shock ionisation. We are observing the inner circumstellar regions of pre-PNe at high angular resolutions with the VLTI. We seek t…
High spatial and sensitivity images of the Luminous Blue Variable IRAS 18576+0341 were obtained using the mid infrared imager VISIR at the Very Large Telescope and the Very Large Array interferometer. The resulting mid-infrared continuum maps show a similar clumpy and approximately circular symmetric nebula, which contrasts sharply with the asymmetry that characterizes the ionized component of the envelope, as evidenced from the radio and [Ne II] line images obtained with comparable spatial resolution. In particular, there is excellent overall agreement between the 12.8 micron map and the radi…
The chemical content of the planetary nebula NGC 3918 is investigated through deep, high-resolution (R~40000) UVES at VLT spectrophotometric data. We identify and measure more than 750 emission lines, making ours one of the deepest spectra ever taken for a planetary nebula. Among these lines we detect very faint lines of several neutron-capture elements (Se, Kr, Rb, and Xe), which enable us to compute their chemical abundances with unprecedented accuracy, thus constraining the efficiency of the s-process and convective dredge-up in the progenitor star of NGC 3918.
We present GADRAD, a Python module that adopts heuristic search techniques in the form of genetic algorithms, to efficiently model post-asymptotic giant branch (post- AGB) disc environments. GADRAD systematically constructs the multi-dimensional pa- parameter probability density functions that arise from the fitting of radiative transfer and geometric models to optical interferometric data products. The result provides unbiased descriptions of the object's potential morphology, component luminosities and temperatures, dust composition, disc density profiles and mass. Correlation in the estimat…
We are studying a class of binary post-AGB stars that seem to be systematically surrounded by equatorial disks and slow outflows. Although the rotating dynamics had only been well identified in three cases, the study of such structures is thought to be fundamental to the understanding of the formation of nebulae around evolved stars. We present ALMA maps of 12CO and 13CO J=3-2 lines in one of these sources, IRAS08544-4431. We analyzed the data by means of nebula models, which account for the expectedly composite source and can reproduce the data. From our modeling, we estimated the main nebula…
We present narrow-, broad-band, and WISE archive images, and high- and intermediate-resolution long-slit spectra of K 4-37, a planetary nebula that has never been analyzed in detail. Although K 4-37 appears bipolar, the morphokinematical analysis discloses the existence of three distinct axes and additional particular directions in the object, indicating that K 4-37 is a multi-axis planetary nebula that has probably been shaped by several bipolar outflows at different directions. A 4-6 M$_{\odot}$ main-sequence progenitor is estimated from the derived high nebular He and N abundances, and very…
We present a study of the high-resolution optical spectrum for the hot post-asymptotic giant branch (post-AGB) star, Hen 3-1013, identified as the optical counterpart of the infrared sourceIRAS 14331-6435. For the first time the detailed identifications of the observed absorption and emission features in the wavelength range 3700-9000 Å is carried out. Absorption lines of HI, HeI, CI, NI, OI, NeI, CII, NII, OII, SiII, SII, ArII, FeII, MnII, CrII, TiII, CoII, NiII, SIII, FeIII and SIV were detected. From the absorption lines, we derived heliocentric radial velocities of $V_r=-29.6\pm0.4$ km/s. …
We performed a mid-infrared imaging survey of evolved stars in order to study the dust distribution in circumstellar envelopes around these objects and to better understand the mass-loss mechanism responsible for the formation of these envelopes. During this survey, we resolved for the first time the circumstellar environment of IRAS 17163-3907 (hereinafter IRAS17163), which is one of the brightest objects in the mid-infrared sky, but is surprisingly not well studied. Our aim is to determine the evolutionary status of IRAS 17163 and study its circumstellar environment in order to understand it…
IRAS 19475+3119 is a quadrupolar pre-planetary nebula (PPN), with two bipolar lobes, one in the east-west (E-W) direction and one in the southeast-northwest (SE-NW) direction. We have observed it in CO J=2-1 with the Submillimeter Array at ~ 1" resolution. The E-W bipolar lobe is known to trace a bipolar outflow and it is detected at high velocity. The SE-NW bipolar lobe appears at low velocity, and could trace a bipolar outflow moving in the plane of the sky. Two compact clumps are seen at low velocity around the common waist of the two bipolar lobes, spatially coincident with the two emissio…
We present a summary of current research on planetary nebulae and their central stars, and related subjects such as atomic processes in ionized nebulae, AGB and post-AGB evolution. Future advances are discussed that will be essential to substantial improvements in our knowledge in the field.
We report the first detection of submillimeter water maser emission toward water-fountain nebulae, which are post-AGB stars that exhibit high-velocity water masers. Using APEX we found emission in the ortho-H2O (10_29-9_36) transition at 321.226 GHz toward three sources: IRAS 15445-5449, IRAS 18043-2116 and IRAS 18286-0959. Similarly to the 22 GHz masers, the submillimeter water masers are expanding with a velocity larger than that of the OH masers, suggesting that these masers also originate in fast bipolar outflows. In IRAS 18043-2116 and IRAS 18286-0959, which figure among the sources with …
We aim to study the presence of both rotation and expansion in post-AGB nebulae, in particular around IW Car, a binary post-AGB star that was suspected to be surrounded by a Keplerian disk. We obtained high-quality ALMA observations of 12CO and 13CO J=3-2 lines in IW Car. The maps were analyzed by means of a simplified model of CO emission, based on those used for similar objects. Our observations clearly show the presence of gas components in rotation, in an equatorial disk, and expansion, which shows an hourglass-like structure with a symmetry axis perpendicular to the rotation plane and is …
We have mapped the pre-planetary nebula IRAS 17150-3224 in 350 GHz continuum and CO J=3-2 line at an angular resolution of about 0".09 using the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array. A continuum source is detected at the center of the nebula, elongated along the equatorial plane, likely tracing a dusty torus around the central source. Continuum emission is also detected on both sides of the central continuum source in the equatorial plane, probably resulting from interactions of collimated fast winds with envelope material in the equator. CO emission is detected along the optical lobe.…
