With an aim of establishing how the [S/Fe] ratios behave at the very low metallicity regime down to [Fe/H] ~ -3, we conducted a non-LTE analysis of near-IR S ~ {\sc i} triplet lines (multiplet 3) at 10455-10459 A for a dozen of very metal-poor stars (-3.2 <[Fe/H] < -1.9) based on the new observational data obtained with IRCS+AO188 of the Subaru Telescope. It turned out that the resulting [S/Fe] values are only moderately supersolar at [S/Fe] ~ +0.2-0.5 irrespective of the metallicity. While this "flat" tendency is consistent with the trend recently corroborated by Spite et al. (2011, A&A, 528, A9) based on the S I 9212/9228/9237 lines (multiplet 1), it disaffirms the possibility of conspicuously large [S/Fe] (up to ~+0.8) at [Fe/H] ~ -3 that we once suggested in our first report on the S abundances of disk/halo stars using S I 10455-10459 lines (Takeda & Takada-Hidai 2011, PASJ, 63, S537). Given these new observational facts, we withdraw our previous argument, since we consider that [S/Fe]'s of some most metal-poor objects were overestimated in that paper; the likely cause for this failure is also discussed.
In an attempt of clarifying the [S/Fe] behavior with the run of [Fe/H] in the metal-poor regime which has been a matter of debate, an extensive non-LTE analysis of near-IR S I triplet lines (multiplet 3) at 1.046 micron was carried out for selected 33 halo/disk stars in a wide metallicity range of [Fe/H] ~-3.7 to ~+0.3, based on the spectral data collected with IRCS+AO188 of the Subaru Telescope. We found an evidence of considerably large [S/Fe] ratio amounting to ~+0.7-0.8 dex at very low metallicity of [Fe/H] ~-3, which makes marked contrast with other alpha-elements (Mg, Si, Ca, Ti) flatly …
A non-LTE analysis of C I lines at 1.068-1.069 micron was carried out for selected 46 halo/disk stars covering a wide metallicity range (-3.7 <[Fe/H]< +0.3), based on the spectral data collected with IRCS+AO188 of the Subaru Telescope, in order to examine whether and how these strong neutral carbon lines of multiplet 1 can be exploited for establishing stellar carbon abundances, especially for very metal-poor stars where CH molecular lines have been commonly used. These C I lines were confirmed to be clearly visible for all stars down to [Fe/H] ~ -3.7, from which C abundances could be successf…
With [Fe/H] ~ -3.3, CD -24_17504 is a canonical metal-poor main sequence turn-off star. Though it has appeared in numerous literature studies, the most comprehensive abundance analysis for the star based on high resolution, high signal-to-noise spectra is nearly 15 years old. We present a new detailed abundance analysis for 21 elements based on combined archival Keck-HIRES and VLT-UVES spectra of the star that is higher in both spectral resolution and signal-to-noise than previous data. Our results for many elements are very similar to those of an earlier comprehensive study of the star, but w…
We examine the r-process in the neutrino-driven proto-neutron-star (PNS) wind of core-collapse supernovae in light of the recent findings of massive neutron stars in binaries as well as of an indication of neutron-richness in the PNS ejecta because of the nucleon potential corrections on neutrino opacities. To this end, a spherically symmetric, general relativistic, steady-state wind model is applied for a wide range of PNS masses between 1.2 M_sun and 2.4 M_sun with the latter reaching the causality limit. Nucleosynthesis calculations with these PNS models are performed by assuming a time evo…
Disentangling techniques are often needed to obtain the spectra of the individual components of binary or multiple systems. A thorough analysis of the shift-and-add algorithm of Marchenko, Moffat, & Eenens (1998) reveals that in many cases the line fluxes are poorly reproduced and spurious wings appear. The causes of these discrepancies are discussed and a new disentangling package, QER20, is presented which significantly reduces these errors and vastly increases the performance. When applied to the massive binary 9 Sgr, our new code yields line fluxes which are notably different from those pr…
We revisit a neutrino-driven r-process mechanism in the He shell of a core-collapse supernova, finding that it could succeed in early stars of metallicity < solar/1000, at relatively low temperatures and neutron densities, producing A ~ 130 and 195 abundance peaks over ~ 10-20 s. The mechanism is sensitive to the neutrino emission model and to neutrino oscillations. We discuss the implications of an r-process that could alter interpretations of abundance data from metal-poor stars, and point out the need for further calculations that include effects of the supernova shock.
We present a detailed study of the non-Local Thermodynamic Equilibrium (non-LTE) formation of the high-excitation neutral oxygen 777 nm triplet in MARCS model atmospheres representative of late-type stars with spectral types F to K. We carried out the calculations using the statistical equilibrium code MULTI, including estimates of the impact on elemental abundance analysis. The atomic model employed includes, in particular, recent quantum-mechanical electron collision data. We confirm that the O I triplet lines form under non-LTE conditions in late-type stars, suffering negative abundance cor…
Hot subdwarf stars of types O and B represent a poorly understood phase in the evolution of low-mass stars. Many subdwarfs show rich oscillations and are among the most chemically peculiar stars known. Two intermediate He-rich hot subdwarf stars, LS IV-14$^\circ$116 and Feige 46, are particularly interesting, because they show extreme enrichments of heavy elements such as Ge, Sr, Y, and Zr, strikingly similar in both stars. Also their light oscillations are similar, but occur at periods incompatible with standard pulsation theory. We investigate the metal abundances in both stars and validate …
We present an analysis and comparison of the 30 micron dust features seen in the Spitzer Space Telescope spectra of 207 carbon-rich asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars, post-AGB objects, and planetary nebulae located in the Milky Way, the Magellanic Clouds (MCs), or the Sagittarius dwarf spheroidal galaxy (Sgr dSph), which are characterised by different average metallicities. We investigated whether the formation of the 30 micron feature carrier may be a function of the metallicity. Through this study we expect to better understand the late stages of stellar evolution of carbon-rich stars in t…
The aim of this work is to characterize the stellar population between Earth and the Orion A molecular cloud where the well known star formation benchmark Orion Nebula Cluster (ONC) is embedded. We use the denser regions the Orion A cloud to block optical background light, effectively isolating the stellar population in front of it. We then use a multi-wavelength observational approach to characterize the cloud's foreground stellar population. We find that there is a rich stellar population in front of the Orion A cloud, from B-stars to M-stars, with a distinct 1) spatial distribution, 2) lumi…
We study the grain properties and location of the forsterite crystals in the circumstellar environment of the pre-planetary nebula (PPN) IRAS 17150-3224 in order to learn more about the as yet poorly understood evolutionary phase prior to the PPN. We use the best-fit model for IRAS 17150-3224 of Meixner et al. (2002) and add forsterite to this model. We investigate different spatial distributions and grain sizes of the forsterite crystals in the circumstellar environment. We compare the spectral bands of forsterite in the mid-infrared and at 69 micrometre in radiative transport models to those…
This is the first paper in a series dealing with optical Nitrogen spectroscopy of O-type stars, aiming at the analysis of Nitrogen abundances. We implemented a new Nitrogen model atom into the NLTE atmosphere/spectrum synthesis code FASTWIND, and compare the resulting optical NIII lines at 4634/40/42 A with other predictions, mostly from Mihalas & Hummer (1973, ApJ 179, 827,`MH'), and from the alternative code CMFGEN. Using similar model atmospheres as MH (not blanketed and wind-free), we are able to reproduce their results, in particular the triplet emission lines. According to MH, these shou…
Comprehensive spectral analyses of the Galactic Wolf-Rayet stars of the nitrogen sequence (i.e.\ the WN subclass) have been performed in a previous paper. However, the distances of these objects were poorly known. Distances have a direct impact on the "absolute" parameters, such as luminosities and mass-loss rates. The recent Gaia Data Release (DR2) of trigonometric parallaxes includes nearly all WN stars of our Galactic sample. In the present paper, we apply the new distances to the previously analyzed Galactic WN stars and rescale the results accordingly. On this basis, we present a revised …
We report on the discovery of a fourth component in the HD 221356 star system, previously known to be formed by an F8V, slightly metal-poor primary ([Fe/H]=-0.26), and a distant M8V+L3V pair. In our ongoing common proper motion search based on VISTA Hemisphere Survey (VHS) and 2MASS catalogues, we have detected a faint (J=13.76+/-0.04 mag) co-moving companion of the F8 star located at angular separation of 12.13+/-0.18 arcsec (position angle of 221.8+/-1.7), corresponding to a projected distance of ~312 AU at 26 pc. Near-infrared spectroscopy of the new companion, covering the 1.5-2.4 micron w…
Context: Mass-loss occurring in red supergiants (RSGs) is a major contributor to the enrichment of the interstellar medium in dust and molecules. The physical mechanism of this mass loss is however relatively poorly known. Betelgeuse is the nearest RSG, and as such a prime object for high angular resolution observations of its surface (by interferometry) and close circumstellar environment. Aims: The goal of our program is to understand how the material expelled from Betelgeuse is transported from its surface to the interstellar medium, and how it evolves chemically in this process. Methods: W…
Only a few percent of cool, old white dwarfs (WDs) have infrared excesses interpreted as originating in small hot disks due to the infall and destruction of single asteroids that come within the star's Roche limit. Infrared excesses at 24 micron were also found to derive from the immediate vicinity of younger, hot WDs, most of which are still central stars of planetary nebulae (CSPN). The incidence of CSPN with this excess is 18%. The Helix CSPN, with a 24 micron excess, has been suggested to have a disk formed from collisions of Kuiper belt-like objects (KBOs). In this paper, we have analyzed…
We examine the mid-infrared fluxes and spectral energy distributions for metal-poor stars with iron abundances [Fe/H] $\lesssim-5$, as well as two CEMP-no stars, to eliminate the possibility that their low metallicities are related to the depletion of elements onto dust grains in the formation of a debris disk. Six out of seven stars examined here show no mid-IR excess. These non-detections rule out many types of circumstellar disks, e.g. a warm debris disk ($T\!\le\!290$ K), or debris disks with inner radii $\le1$ AU, such as those associated with the chemically peculiar post-AGB spectroscopi…
The chemical abundances of large samples of extremely metal-poor (EMP) stars can be used to investigate metal-free stellar populations, supernovae, and nucleosynthesis as well as the formation and galactic chemical evolution of the Milky Way and its progenitor halos. However, current progress on the study of EMP stars is being limited by their faint apparent magnitudes. The acquisition of high signal-to-noise spectra for faint EMP stars requires a major telescope time commitment, making the construction of large samples of EMP star abundances prohibitively expensive. We have developed a new, e…
In an effort to simultaneously study the gas and dust components of the disc surrounding the young Herbig Ae star HD 169142, we present far-IR observations obtained with the PACS instrument onboard the Herschel Space Observatory. This work is part of the Open Time Key Project GASPS, which is aimed at studying the evolution of protoplanetary discs. To constrain the gas properties in the outer disc, we observed the star at several key gas-lines, including [OI] 63.2 and 145.5 micron, [CII] 157.7 micron, CO 72.8 and 90.2 micron, and o-H2O 78.7 and 179.5 micron. We only detect the [OI] 63.2 micron …
Context: We have analysed Herschel-PACS spectra of 32 circumstellar disks around Herbig Ae/Be and T-Tauri stars obtained within the Herschel key programme DIGIT. In this paper we focus on the 69mu emission band of the crystalline silicate forsterite. Aims: This work provides an overview of the 69mu forsterite bands in the DIGIT sample. We aim to derive the temperature and composition of the forsterite grains. With this information, constraints can be placed on the spatial distribution of the forsterite in the disk and its formation history. Methods: Position and shape of the 69mu band are used…
We have obtained new detailed abundances of the Fe-group elements Sc through Zn (Z=21-30) in three very metal-poor ([Fe/H] $\approx -3$) stars: BD 03 740, BD -13 3442 and CD -33 1173. High-resolution ultraviolet HST/STIS spectra in the wavelength range 2300-3050Å were gathered, and complemented by an assortment of optical echelle spectra. The analysis featured recent laboratory atomic data for number of neutral and ionized species for all Fe-group elements except Cu and Zn. A detailed examination of scandium, titanium, and vanadium abundances in large-sample spectroscopic surveys indicates tha…
Abundances of beryllium in metal-poor stars scale linearly with metallicity down to [Fe/H] ~ -3.0. In the stars where Be has been detected at this extremely metal-poor regime, an increased abundance scatter has been previously reported. This scatter could indicate a flattening of the relation between Be and [Fe/H]. Our aim is to perform a new investigation of Be abundances in extremely metal-poor stars and try to clarify whether a Be abundance plateau exists. We revisited the Be abundances in a sample of nine dwarfs with [Fe/H] ~ -3.0. Additionally, we analysed the Be lines in the spectra of s…
We employ Gaia, 2MASS, and ALLWISE photometry, as well as astrometric data from Gaia, to search for relatively bright very metal-poor ([Fe/H] $< -2.0$; VMP) giant star candidates using three different criteria: 1) our derived Gaia photometric metallicities, 2) the lack of stellar molecular absorption near 4.6 microns, and 3) their high tangential velocities. With different combinations of these criteria, we have identified six samples of candidates with $G <$ 15: the Gold sample (24,304 candidates), the Silver GW sample (40,157 candidates), the Silver GK sample (120,452 candidates), the Bronze…
Metal-deficient stars are important tracers for understanding the early formation of the Galaxy. Recent large-scale surveys with both photometric and spectroscopic data have reported an increasing number of metal-deficient stars whose kinematic features are consistent with those of the disk stellar populations. We report the discovery of an RR~Lyrae variable (hereafter RRL) that is located within the thick disk and has an orbit consistent with the thick-disk kinematics. Our target RRL (HD 331986) is located at around 1 kpc from the Sun and, with V=11.3, is among the 130 brightest RRLs known so…
The planetary nebula (PN) NGC3132 is a striking example of the dramatic but poorly understood, mass-loss phenomena that (1-8) Msun stars undergo during their death throes as they evolve into white dwarfs (WDs). From an analysis of JWST multiwavelength (0.9-18 micron) imaging of NGC3132, we report the discovery of an asymmetrical dust cloud around the WD central star (CS) of NGC3132, seen most prominently in the 18 micron~image, with a surface-brightness limited radial extent of >~2 arcsec. We show that the A2V star located 1.7 arcsec to CS's North-East (and 0.75 kpc from Earth) is gravitationa…
