We present a systematic discussion of Lambda_b -> Lambda transition form factors in the framework of soft-collinear effective theory (SCET). The universal soft form factor, which enters the symmetry relations in the limit of large recoil energy, is calculated from a sum-rule analysis of a suitable SCET correlation function. The same method is applied to derive the leading corrections from hard-collinear gluon exchange at first order in the strong coupling constant. We present numerical estimates for form factors and form-factor ratios and their impact on decay observables in Lambda_b -> Lambda mu^+ mu^- decays.
We consider nonleptonic B decays into two light mesons at leading order in soft-collinear effective theory, and show that the decay amplitudes are factorized to all orders in alpha_s. The operators for nonleptonic B decays in the full theory are first matched to the operators in SCET_I, which is the effective theory appropriate for sqrt{m_b Lambda} <mu <m_b with Lambda~0.5 GeV. We evolve the operators and the relevant time-ordered products in SCET_I to SCET_II, which is appropriate for mu < sqrt{m_b Lambda}. Using the gauge-invariant operators in SCET_II, we compute nonleptonic B decays in SCE…
We consider rare radiative B decays such as B -> K^* gamma or B -> rho gamma in soft-collinear effective theory, and show that the decay amplitudes are factorized to all orders in alpha_s and at leading order in Lambda/m_b.By employing two-step matching, we classify the operators for radiative B decays in powers of a small parameter lambda(~ \sqrt{Lambda/m_b}) and obtain the relevant operators to order lambda in SCET_I. These operators are constructed with or without spectator quarks including the four-quark operators contributing to annihilation and W-exchange channels. And we employ SCET_II …
We describe in some detail the derivation of a power counting formula for the soft-collinear effective theory (SCET). This formula constrains which operators are required to correctly describe the infrared at any order in the Lambda_QCD/Q expansion (lambda expansion). The result assigns a unique lambda-dimension to graphs in SCET solely from vertices, is gauge independent, and can be applied independent of the process. For processes with an OPE the lambda-dimension has a correspondence with dynamical twist.
The form of collinear gauge invariance for power suppressed operators in the soft-collinear effective theory is discussed. Using a field redefinition we show that it is possible to make any power suppressed ultrasoft-collinear operators invariant under the original leading order gauge transformations. Our manipulations avoid gauge fixing. The Lagrangians to O(lambda^2) are given in terms of these new fields. We then give a simple procedure for constructing power suppressed soft-collinear operators in SCET_II by using an intermediate theory SCET_I.
Quark masses are included in the SCET Lagrangian. Treating the strange quark mass as order Lambda_{QCD}, we find that strange quark mass terms are suppressed in SCET1, but are leading order in SCET2. This is relevant for B decays to K^* and K. Strange quark mass effects in semileptonic and weak radiative form factors are studied. They give corrections to the form factors that are not suppressed by powers of the bottom quark mass, or, equivalently, by the large recoil energy of the final state meson, and and preserve the heavy to light form factor relations that follow from using the leading or…
We give a general parameterization of the Lambda_b --> Lambda(1520) gamma decay amplitude, applicable to any strange isosinglet spin-3/2 baryon, and calculate the branching fraction and helicity amplitudes. Large-energy form factor relations are worked out, and it is shown that the helicity-3/2 amplitudes vanish at lowest order in soft-collinear effective theory (SCET). The suppression can be tested experimentally at the LHC and elsewhere, thus providing a benchmark for SCET. We apply the results to assess the experimental reach for a possible wrong-helicity b --> s gamma dipole coupling in La…
We describe a chiral formalism for processes involving both energetic hadrons and soft Goldstone bosons, which extends the application of soft-collinear effective theory to multibody B decays. The nonfactorizable helicity amplitudes for heavy meson decays into multibody final states satisfy symmetry relations analogous to the large energy form factor relations, which are broken at leading order in Lambda/mb by calculable factorizable terms. We use the chiral effective theory to compute the leading corrections to these symmetry relations in B -> M_n pi ell\barνand B -> M_n pi e+e- decays.
We investigate sum rules for heavy-to-light transition form factors at large recoil derived from correlation functions with interpolating currents for light pseudoscalar or vector fields in soft-collinear effective theory (SCET). We consider both, factorizable and non-factorizable contributions at leading power in the Lambda/m_b expansion and to first order in the strong coupling constant alpha_s, neglecting contributions from 3-particle distribution amplitudes in the B-meson. We pay particular attention to various sources of parametric and systematic uncertainties. We also discuss certain for…
We consider a sum rule for heavy-to-light form factors in soft-collinear effective theory (SCET). Using the correlation function given by the time-ordered product of a heavy-to-light current and its hermitian conjugate, the heavy-to-light soft form factor zeta_P can be related to the leading-order B meson shape function. Using the scaling behavior of the heavy-to-light form factor in Lambda_QCD/m_b, we put a constraint on the behavior of the $B$ meson shape function near the endpoint. We employ the sum rule to estimate the size of zeta_P with the model for the shape function and find that it r…
We reformulate the soft-collinear effective theory which includes the collinear quark and soft gluons. The quark form factor is used to prove that SCET$_{\rm II}$ reproduces the IR physics of the full theory. We give a factorization proof in deep inelastic lepton-hadron scattering by use of the position space formulation.
The accurate calculation of weak heavy-to-light form factors is crucial for the determination of CKM matrix elements from experimental data on B decays. In SCET, the soft-collinear effective theory, these form factors can, in the heavy quark limit, be split into a factorisable part that is calculable in perturbation theory, and a nonfactorisable part that observes certain spin-symmetries. I discuss the relation between the SCET factorisation formulas and the heavy quark limit of the corresponding QCD sum rules on the light-cone. I also analyse the numerical size of factorisable and nonfactoris…
In the framework of soft-collinear effective theory (SCET), we show how to formulate the resummation for a broad family of final-state, global observables in high-energy collisions in a general way that is suitable for a numerical calculation. Contrary to the standard SCET approach, this results in a method that does not require an observable-specific factorization theorem. We present a complete formulation at next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic order for $e^+e^-$ observables, and show how to systematically extend the framework to higher orders. This work paves the way to automated resummation…
One-loop matching corrections are calculated for Soft-Collinear Effective Theory (SCET) operators relevant to the analysis of heavy-to-light meson form factors at large recoil. The numerical impact of radiative corrections on form factor predictions is assessed. Evanescent operators in the effective theory are studied and it is shown that even in problems of the Sudakov type, these operators can be renormalized to have vanishing matrix elements.
Soft-Collinear Effective Theory (SCET) has been formulated since a decade now in covariant gauges. In this work we derive a modified SCET Lagrangian applicable in both classes of gauges: regular and singular ones. This extends the range of applicability of SCET. The new Lagrangian must be used to obtain factorization theorems in cases where the transverse momenta of the particles in the final states are not integrated over, such as semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering, Drell-Yan and the Higgs production cross-section at low transverse momentum. By doing so all non-perturbative matrix eleme…
The proton form factors at large momentum transfer are dominated by two contributions which are associated with the hard and soft rescattering respectively. Motivated by a very active experimental form factor program at intermediate values of momentum transfers, $Q^{2}\sim 5-15 \text{GeV}^{2}$, where an understanding in terms of only a hard rescattering mechanism cannot yet be expected, we investigate in this work the soft rescattering contribution using soft collinear effective theory (SCET). Within such description, the form factor is characterized, besides the hard scale $Q^2$, by a semi-ha…
B -> K pi and related decays are studied in the heavy quark limit of QCD using the soft collinear effective theory (SCET). We focus on results that follow solely from integrating out the scale mb, without expanding the amplitudes for the physics at smaller scales such as alphas(sqrt{Epi LambdaQCD}). The reduction in the number of hadronic parameters in SCET leads to multiple predictions without the need of SU(3). We find that the CP-asymmetry in $B^-\to pi^0 K^-$ should have a similar magnitude and the same sign as the well measured asymmetry in $\bar B^0 \toπ^+ K^-$. Our prediction for Br(K^+…
We give a detailed description of the differences between the factorization and results derived from SCET and QCDF for decays B -> M1 M2. This serves as a reply to a comment about our work "B-> M1 M2: Factorization, charming penguins, strong phases, and polarization" [1] made by the authors in [2]. We disagree with their criticisms.
The hard-scattering contributions to heavy-to-light form factors at large recoil are studied systematically in soft-collinear effective theory (SCET). Large logarithms arising from multiple energy scales are resummed by matching QCD onto SCET in two stages via an intermediate effective theory. Anomalous dimensions in the intermediate theory are computed, and their form is shown to be constrained by conformal symmetry. Renormalization-group evolution equations are solved to give a complete leading-order analysis of the hard-scattering contributions, in which all single and double logarithms are…
Using the framework of soft-collinear effective theory (SCET), we factorize and calculate $e^+e^-$ angularity distributions, including perturbative resummation and the incorporation of a universal model for the nonperturbative soft function. Angularities $τ_a$ are a class of event shapes varying in their sensitivity to the substructure of jets in the final state, controlled by a continuous parameter $a<2$. We calculate the jet and soft functions in factorized angularity distributions for all $a<1$ to first order in the strong coupling $α_s$ and resum large logarithms to next-to-leading logarit…
We show that the amplitudes for B decays into two light mesons at leading order in soft-collinear effective theory are factorized to all orders in alpha_s. We construct gauge-invariant four-quark operators by employing the effective theories SCET_I for sqrt{m_b Λ} <μ<m_b, and SCET_II for μ<sqrt{m_b Λ} with Lambda ~0.5 GeV. These operators do not allow gluon exchanges between different sectors of the current and the matrix elements are reduced to the products of current matrix elements. The spectator interactions are also factorized at leading order in SCET and to all orders in alpha_s.
We use soft-collinear effective theory (SCET) to study the factorization properties of deep inelastic scattering in the region of phase space where 1-x = O(Lambda_{QCD/Q}). By applying a regions analysis to loop diagrams in the Breit frame, we show that the appropriate version of SCET includes anti-hard-collinear, collinear, and soft-collinear fields. We find that the effects of the soft-collinear fields spoil perturbative factorization even at leading order in the 1/Q expansion.
We considered the power corrections to the amplitude describing hard exclusive pion pair production in gamma gamma collisions at large energy and momentum transfer. In order to derive a factorization formula for the subleading power corrections one has to take into account the so-called soft-overlap (or soft) contributions. These terms can be naturally introduced within the SCET framework as a matrix elements of the SCET-I operators. The so-called end-point singularities must cancel in the sum of the hard and soft contributions after matching onto SCET-II. Using the so-called physical subtract…
We describe the construction of light-cone sum rules (LCSRs) for exclusive $B$-meson decays into light energetic hadrons from correlation functions within soft-collinear effective theory (SCET). As an example, we consider the SCET sum rule for the $B \to π$ transition form factor at large recoil, including radiative corrections from hard-collinear loop diagrams at first order in the strong coupling constant.
We discuss the soft-collinear effective theory (SCET) and kinematic expansions in B-decays, focusing on recent results for color suppressed B -> D^(*) X decays. In particular we discuss model independent predictions for B^0 -> D^0 pi^0 and B^0 -> D^*0 pi^0, and update the comparison using new experimental data. We show why HQET alone is insufficient to give these results. SCET predictions are also reviewed for other B and Lambda_b decay channels that are not yet tested by data.
We summarize and extend previous results on the comparison of threshold resummation, performed, using soft-collinear effective theory (SCET), in the Becher-Neubert approach, to the standard perturbative QCD formalism based on factorization and resummation of Mellin moments of partonic cross sections. We show that the logarithmic accuracy of this SCET result can be extended by half a logarithmic order, thereby bringing it in full agreement with the standard QCD result if a suitable choice is made for the soft scale mu_s which characterizes the SCET result. We provide a master formula relating t…
We calculate the two-photon exchange (TPE) corrections in the region where the kinematical variables describing the elastic $ep$ scattering are moderately large momentum scales relative to the soft hadronic scale. For such kinematics we use the QCD factorization approach formulated in the framework of the soft-collinear effective theory (SCET). Such technique allows us to develop a description for the soft-spectator scattering contribution which is found to be important in the region of moderately large scales. Together with the hard-spectator contribution we present the complete factorization…
The main application of Heavy Quark Effective Theory (HQET) and of Soft Collinear Effective Theory (SCET) is in establishing factorization theorems for exclusive and semi-inclusive decays of heavy mesons. However, the calculation of the soft factors from the HQET or SCET factorization relations is, as usual, impeded by the non-perturbative aspect of the strong interactions. In the hope of gaining some insights into some of these quantities we compute them in the 't Hooft model. We find that the B-meson shape function is exactly given by the square of the B-meson light-cone wave-function. The s…
We perform the two-loop matching calculation for heavy-to-light currents from QCD onto soft-collinear effective theory for the complete set of Dirac structures. The newly obtained matching coefficients enter several phenomenological applications, of which we discuss heavy-to-light form factor ratios and exclusive radiative decays, as well as the semi-inclusive decay anti-B ---> X(s) l+ l-. For this decay, we observe a significant shift of the forward-backward asymmetry zero and find q_0^2 = (3.34 +0.22 -0.25) GeV^2 for an invariant mass cut m_X^cut=2.0 GeV.
A procedure is developed for using Soft Collinear Effective Theory (SCET) to generate fully exclusive events, which can then be compared to data from collider experiments. We show that SCET smoothly interpolates between QCD for hard emissions, and the parton shower for soft emissions, while resumming all large logarithms. In SCET, logarithms are resummed using the renormalization group, instead of classical Sudakov factors, so subleading logarithms can be resummed as well. In addition, all loop effects of QCD can be reproduced in SCET, which allows the effective theory to incorporate next-to-l…
In the framework of the soft-collinear effective theory, we demonstrate that the leading-power heavy-to-light baryonic form factors at large recoil obey the heavy quark and large energy symmetries. Symmetry breaking effects are suppressed by $Λ/m_{b}$ or $Λ/E$, where $Λ$ is the hadronic scale, $m_b$ is the $b$ quark mass and $E\sim m_b$ is the energy of light baryon in the final state. At leading order, the leading power baryonic form factor $ξ_{Λ,p}(E)$, in which two hard-collinear gluons are exchanged in the baryon constituents, can factorize into the soft and collinear matrix elements convo…
In this work we study QCD corrections to the top quark doubly decay rate with a detected $B$ hadron containing a $b$ quark. We focus on the regime among which the emitted $W$ boson nearly carries its maxim energy. The tool that we use here is the soft-collinear effective theory (SCET). The factorization theorem based on SCET indicates a novel fragmenting jet function. We calculate this function to next-to-leading order in $α_s$. Large logarithms due to several well separated scale are summed up using the renormalization group equation (RGE). Finally we reach an analytic formula for the distrib…
We study the (exclusive) kT jet algorithm using effective field theory techniques. Regularizing the virtualities and rapidities of graphs in the soft-collinear effective theory (SCET), we are able to write the next-to-leading-order dijet cross section as the product of separate hard, jet, and soft contributions. We show how to reproduce the Sudakov form factor to next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy previously calculated by the coherent branching formalism. Our result only depends on the renormalization group evolution of the hard function, rather than on that of the hard and jet functions as …
We extend an effective theory framework developped in Refs. [1,2] to sum electroweak Sudakov logarithms in high energy processes to also include massive gauge bosons in the final state. The calculations require an additional regulator on top of dimensional regularization to tame the collinear singularities. We propose to use the Delta regulator, which respects soft-collinear factorization.
We compute NNLO (${\cal O}(α_s^2)$) corrections to the hard-scattering kernels entering the QCD factorization formula for $B\to Vγ$ decays, where $V$ is a light vector meson. We give complete NNLO results for the dipole operators $Q_7$ and $Q_8$, and partial results for $Q_1$ valid in the large-$β_0$ limit and neglecting the NNLO correction from hard spectator scattering. Large perturbative logarithms in the hard-scattering kernels are identified and resummed using soft-collinear effective theory. We use our results to estimate the branching fractions for $B\to K^*γ$ and $B_s\to ϕγ$ decays at …
We re-examine observables with rapidity divergences in the context of a formulation of Soft-Collinear Effective Theory in which infrared degrees of freedom are not explicitly separated into modes. We consider the Sudakov form factor with a massive vector boson and Drell-Yan production of lepton pairs at small transverse momentum as demonstrative examples. In this formalism, rapidity divergences introduce a scheme dependence into the effective theory and are associated with large logarithms appearing in the soft matching conditions. This scheme dependence may be used to derive the corresponding…
Using the framework of soft-collinear effective theory with Glauber gluons ($\SCETG$), we evaluate medium-induced splitting kernels. Because of the power counting of the effective theory, our results are valid for arbitrary, not necessarily small values of the energy fraction $x$ taken by the emitted parton. In this framework we prove the factorization from the hard process and gauge invariance of the splitting kernels, we also show how nuclear recoil and the phase space cuts can be implemented into the phenomenology.
We compute the four-loop corrections to the Higgs-bottom vertex within massless QCD and present analytic results for all color structures. The infrared poles of the renormalized form factor agree with the predicted four-loop pattern. Furthermore, we use the results for the Higgs-bottom, photon-quark, and Higgs-gluon form factors to provide hard matching coefficients in soft-collinear effective theory up to four-loop accuracy.
In this paper, with the framework of (p)NRQCD and SCET, the processes $B_c\to M_1 M_2$ are investigated. Here $M_{1(2)}$ denotes the light charmless meson, such as $π$, $ρ$, $K$ or $K^*$. Based on the SCET power counting rules, the leading transition amplitudes are picked out, which include $A_{wA}^2$, $A_{wB}^2$, $A_{wC}^2$, $A_{wD}^2$ and $A_{c}^0$. From SCET, their factorization formulae are proven. Based on the obtained factorization formulae, in particular, the numerical calculation on $A_{wB}^2$ is performed.
We argue that energetic muon-electron scattering in the backward direction can be viewed as a template case to study the resummation of large logarithms related to endpoint divergences appearing in the effective-theory formulation of hard-exclusive processes. While it is known since the mid sixties that the leading double logarithms from QED corrections resum to a modified Bessel function on the amplitude level, the modern formulation in Soft-Collinear Effective Theory (SCET) shows a surprisingly complicated and iterative pattern of endpoint-divergent convolution integrals. In contrast to the …
The form factors of $B\toπ(ρ)$ decays are analyzed using the light-cone sum rules in the framework of the soft-collinear effective theory (SCET). We establish the sum rules for the leading and the next-to-leading order (NLO) nonperturbative functions of the SCET. Explicit calculation shows that (leading)+(NLO) $\sim 1/E^2+1/E^3$, where $E$ is the large recoiling energy. The results are compatible with the literatures. Also the validity of this hybrid formalism is discussed.
We discuss consistent power counting for integrating soft and collinear degrees of freedom over arbitrary regions of phase space in the soft-collinear effective theory (SCET), and illustrate our results at one loop with several jet algorithms: JADE, Sterman-Weinberg and k_T. Consistently applying SCET power-counting in phase space, along with non-trivial zero-bin subtractions, prevents double-counting of final states. The resulting phase-space integrals over soft and collinear regions are individually ultraviolet divergent, but the phase-space ultraviolet divergences cancel in the sum. Whether…
Factorization based on the soft-collinear effective theory (SCET) can be used to reduce the number of hadronic parameters in an isospin analysis of B-> pi pi decays by one. This gives a theoretically precise method for determining the CP violating phase gamma by fitting to the B-> pi pi data without C_{pi0 pi0}. SCET predicts that gamma lies close to the isospin bounds. With the current world averages we find gamma=75^o \pm 2^o {}^{+9^o}_{-13^o}, where the uncertainties are theoretical, then experimental.
We review soft-collinear effective theory (SCET), and apply it to discuss quark electromagnetic form factor, then present the resumed transverse momentum distribution of Higgs-boson production via gluon fusion under this framework, where we derive a relatively full differential formula in transverse momentum $Q_T$ space like one which have been obtained by Dokshitzer-D'Yanov-Troyan (DDT) in perturbative Quantum Chromodynamics (pQCD). Furthermore, our above result can be generalized to even higher order. Comparing our formula with the integral formula of Collins-Soper-Sterman (CSS) in impact pa…
In this talk I give an overview of soft collinear effective theory (SCET), including a discussion of some recent advances. First, I briefly cover the foundation upon which SCET is built, namely QCD factorization, and review the theoretical framework of SCET. Next, I cover some recent calculations involving SCET. Since there are more interesting results than I can cover, I have picked four that that I find particularly exciting. The first two topics are dynamical threshold enhancements in Drell-Yan and resummation of higgs production at the LHC. Both topics center on the resummation of large Su…
Gauge invariance in soft-collinear effective theory (SCET) is discussed in regular (covariant) and singular (light-cone) gauges. It is argued that SCET, as it stands, is not capable to define in a gauge invariant way certain non-perturbative matrix elements that are an integral part of many factorization theorems. Those matrix elements involve two quark or gluon fields separated not only in light-cone direction but also in the transverse one. This observation limits the range of applicability of SCET. To remedy this we argue that one needs to introduce a new Wilson line as part of SCET formali…
Electroweak Sudakov corrections of the form alpha^n log^m s/M_{W,Z}^2 are summed using renormalization group evolution in soft-collinear effective theory (SCET). Results are given for the scalar, vector and tensor form-factors for fermion and scalar particles. The formalism for including massive gauge bosons in SCET is developed.
We derive light-cone sum rules (LCSRs) for exclusive B-meson decays into light energetic hadrons from correlation functions within soft-collinear effective theory (SCET). In these sum rules the short-distance scale refers to ``hard-collinear'' interactions with virtualities of order (Lambda_{QCD}*m_b). Hard scales (related to virtualities of order m_b^2) are integrated out and enter via external coefficient functions in the sum rule. Soft dynamics is encoded in light-cone distribution amplitudes for the B-meson, which describe both the factorizable and non-factorizable contributions to exclusi…
We consider the class of jet shapes known as angularities in dijet production at hadron colliders. These angularities are modified from the original definitions in e+e- collisions to be boost invariant along the beam axis. These shapes apply to the constituents of jets defined with respect to either k_T-type (anti-k_T, C/A, and k_T) algorithms and cone-type algorithms. We present an SCET factorization formula and calculate the ingredients needed to achieve next-to-leading-log (NLL) accuracy in kinematic regions where non-global logarithms are not large. The factorization formula involves previ…
We introduce the transverse momentum dependent fragmenting jet function (TMDFJF), which appears in factorization theorems for cross sections for jets with an identified hadron. These are functions of $z$, the hadron's longitudinal momentum fraction, and transverse momentum, $\boldsymbol{\mathrm{p}}_{\perp}$, relative to the jet axis. In the framework of Soft-Collinear Effective Theory (SCET) we derive the TMDFJF from both a factorized SCET cross section and the TMD fragmentation function defined in the literature. The TMDFJFs are factorized into distinct collinear and soft-collinear modes by m…
