We define a sigma model with doubled target space and calculate its background field equations. These coincide with generalised metric equation of motion of double field theory, thus the double field theory is the effective field theory for the sigma model.
We evaluate the partition functions in the neighbourhood of catastrophes by saddle point integration and express them in terms of generalized Airy functions.
Double sigma model with the strong constraints is equivalent to the normal sigma model by imposing the self-duality relation. The gauge symmetries are the diffeomorphism and one-form gauge transformation with the strong constraints. We modify the Dirichlet and Neumann boundary conditions with the fully $O(D, D)$ description from the doubled gauge fields. We perform the one-loop $β$ function for the constant background fields to find low energy effective theory without using the strong constraints. The low energy theory can also be $O(D,D)$ invariant as the double sigma model. We use the other …
The double sigma model with the strong constraints is equivalent to a classical theory of the normal sigma model with one on-shell self-duality relation. The one-form gauge field comes from the boundary term. It is the same as the normal sigma model. The gauge symmetries under the strong constraints are the diffeomorphism and one-form gauge transformation in the double sigma model. These gauge symmetries are also the same as the Dirac-Born-Infeld (DBI) theory. The main task of this work is to compute one-loop $β$ function to obtain the low energy effective theory of the double sigma model. We …
O(N) vector sigma models possessing catastrophes in their action are studied. Coupling the limit N --> infinity with an appropriate scaling behaviour of the coupling constants, the partition function develops a singular factor. This is a generalized Airy function in the case of spacetime dimension zero and the partition function of a scalar field theory for positive spacetime dimension.
In this letter we describe how to string together the doubled field approach by Cremmer, Julia, Lu and Pope with Pasti-Sorokin-Tonin technique to construct the sigma-model-like action for type IIA supergravity. The relation of the results with that of obtained in the context of searching for Superstring/M-theory hidden symmetry group is discussed.
In double field theory, the physical space has been understood as a subspace of the doubled space. Recently, the doubled space is defined as the para-Hermitian manifold and the physical space is realized as a leaf of a foliation of the doubled space. This construction naturally introduces the fundamental 2-form, which plays an important role in a reformulation of string theory known as the Born sigma model. In this paper, we present the Born sigma model for $p$-branes in M-theory and type IIB theory by extending the fundamental 2-form into U-duality-covariant $(p+1)$-forms.
We show how non-commutativity arises from commutativity in the double sigma model. We demonstrate that this model is intrinsically non-commutative by calculating the propagators. In the simplest phase configuration, there are two dual copies of commutative theories. In general rotated frames, one gets a non-commutative theory and a commutative partner. Thus a non-vanishing $B$ also leads to a commutative theory. Our results imply that $O\left(D,D\right)$ symmetry unifies not only the big and small torus physics, but also the commutative and non-commutative theories. The physical interpretation…
We study two-dimensional ${\cal N}=(2,2)$ gauge theory and its dualized system in terms of complex (linear) superfields and their alternatives. Although this technique itself is not new, we can obtain a new model, the so-called "semi-doubled" GLSM. Similar to doubled sigma model, this involves both the original and dual degrees of freedom simultaneously, whilst the latter only contribute to the system via topological interactions. Applying this to the ${\cal N}=(4,4)$ GLSM for H-monopoles, i.e., smeared NS5-branes, we obtain its T-dualized systems in quite an easy way. As a bonus, we also obta…
We show both the leading and subleading double soft theorems of the nonlinear sigma model follow from a shift symmetry enforcing Adler's zero condition in the presence of an unbroken global symmetry. They do not depend on the underlying coset G/H and are universal infrared behaviors of Nambu-Goldstone bosons. Although nonlinear sigma models contain an infinite number of interaction vertices, the double soft limit is determined entirely by a single four-point interaction, together with the existence of Adler's zeros.
We study a generalization of the Alexandrov-Kontsevich-Schwarz-Zaboronsky (AKSZ) formulation of the A- and B-models which involves a doubling of coordinates, and can be understood as a complexification of the Poisson $σ$-model underlying these. In the flat space limit the construction contains models obtained by twisting an N=2 supersymmetric $σ$-model on Hull's doubled geometry. The curved space generalization involves a product of two diffeomorphic Calabi-Yau manifolds, and the $O(d,d)$ metric can be understood as a complexification of the CY metric. In addition, we consider solutions that c…
We establish a double dualization in two-dimensional supersymmetric gauge theory. We construct a gauged linear sigma model (GLSM) which contains a complex twisted linear superfield coupled to two sets of Abelian vector superfields. In the IR regime, the GLSM provides a string sigma model whose target spaces are a defect NS5-brane, a Kaluza-Klein vortex and an exotic $5^2_2$-brane. All of them are five-branes of codimension two and are related by T-duality. This model is a natural extension of the GLSM proposed by Tong which gives a sigma model for an H-monopole, i.e., a smeared NS5-brane of co…
Courant sigma-models encode the geometric and non-geometric fluxes of compactified closed string theory as generalized Wess-Zumino terms and exhibit their relation to Courant algebroids. In recent work, we proposed a doubled membrane sigma-model that establishes the corresponding connection to double field theory and its algebroid structure. The strategy is to consider a "large" Courant sigma-model over a doubled target spacetime and identify a suitable projection that leads to a sigma-model for doubled fields. In this note, we provide further details for this construction. Starting from the B…
Poisson sigma models represent an interesting use of Poisson manifolds for the construction of a classical field theory. Their definition in the language of fibre bundles is shown and the corresponding field equations are derived using a coordinate independent variational principle. The elegant form of equations of motion for so called Poisson-Lie groups is derived. Construction of the Poisson-Lie group corresponding to a given Lie bialgebra is widely known only for coboundary Lie bialgebras. Using the adjoint representation of Lie group and Drinfel'd double we show that Poisson-Lie group can …
In this paper which is based on the results obtained in collaboration with Igor Bandos and Dmitri Sorokin I present the extention of the "doubled fields" formalism by Cremmer, Julia, Lu and Pope to the supersymmetric case and lifting this construction onto the level of the proper duality-symmetric action for D=11 supergravity. Further extension of the doubled field formulation to include dynamical sources is also discussed.
In arXiv:0902.4032 [hep-th] an O(D,D)-covariant sigma model describing the embedding of a closed world-sheet into the 2D-dimensional twisted torus was proposed. Such sigma models provide a universal description of string theory with target spaces related by the action of T-duality. In this article a six-dimensional toy example is studied in detail. Different polarisations of the six-dimensional target space give different three-dimensional string backgrounds including a nilmanifold with H-flux, a T-fold with R-flux and a new class of T-folds. Global issues and connections with the doubled toru…
This paper describes the background field equations for strings in T-duality symmetric formalisms in which the dimension of target space is doubled and the sigma model supplemented with constraints. These are calculated by demanding the vanishing of the beta-functional of the sigma model couplings in the doubled target space. We demonstrate the equivalence with the background field equations of the standard string sigma model.
We explore extensions of the double copy to massive theories and find a new cubic theory with a local double copy. We consider the nonlinear sigma model and the special galileon theory, massless versions of which are known to be related through the double copy. We show that by performing a Kaluza-Klein reduction of these theories from five dimensions down to four, a double copy relation exists between the resulting massive four-dimensional scalar field theories. This requires the vanishing contribution of new galileon terms arising in high dimensions. We further explore if other interactions t…
We define even dimensional quantum spheres Sigma_q^2n that generalize to higher dimension the standard quantum two-sphere of Podle's and the four-sphere Sigma_q^4 obtained in the quantization of the Hopf bundle. The construction relies on an iterated Poisson double suspension of the standard Podle's two-sphere. The Poisson spheres that we get have the same symplectic foliation consisting of a degenerate point and a symplectic plane and, after quantization, have the same C^*-algebraic completion. We investigate their K-homology and K-theory by introducing Fredholm modules and projectors.
The existence of genuinely non-geometric backgrounds, i.e. ones without geometric dual, is an important question in string theory. In this paper we examine this question from a sigma model perspective. First we construct a particular class of Courant algebroids as protobialgebroids with all types of geometric and non-geometric fluxes. For such structures we apply the mathematical result that any Courant algebroid gives rise to a 3D topological sigma model of the AKSZ type and we discuss the corresponding 2D field theories. It is found that these models are always geometric, even when both 2-fo…
Recently, the author has proposed a generalization of the matrix and vector models approach to the theory of random surfaces and polymers. The idea is to replace the simple matrix or vector (path) integrals by gauge theory or non-linear sigma model (path) integrals. We explain how this solves one of the most fundamental limitation of the classic approach: we automatically obtain non-perturbative definitions in non-Borel summable cases. This is exemplified on the simplest possible examples involving O(N) symmetric non-linear sigma models with N-dimensional target spaces, for which we construct …
The finite volume problem of O(2N) sigma models with integrable diagonal boundaries on a finite interval is investigated. The double row transfer matrix is diagonalized by Algebraic Bethe Ansatz. The boundary Bethe Yang equations for the particle rapidities and the accompanying Bethe Ansatz equations are derived.
We investigate geometric aspects of double field theory (DFT) and its formulation as a doubled membrane sigma-model. Starting from the standard Courant algebroid over the phase space of an open membrane, we determine a splitting and a projection to a subbundle that sends the Courant algebroid operations to the corresponding operations in DFT. This describes precisely how the geometric structure of DFT lies in between two Courant algebroids and is reconciled with generalized geometry. We construct the membrane sigma-model that corresponds to DFT, and demonstrate how the standard T-duality orbit…
Computation of superstring partition function for the non-linear sigma model on the product of a two-torus and its dual within the scope of the doubled formalism is presented. We verify that it reproduces the partition functions of the toroidally compactified type--IIA and type--IIB theories for appropriate choices of the GSO projection.
We study a boundary version of the gauged WZW model with a Poisson-Lie group G as the target. The Poisson-Lie structure of G is used to define the Wess-Zumino term of the action on surfaces with boundary. We clarify the relation of the model to the topological Poisson sigma model with the dual Poisson-Lie group G^* as the target and show that the phase space of the theory on a strip is essentially the Heisenberg double of G introduced by Semenov-Tian-Shansky
We define a two-parameter family of integrable deformations of the principal chiral model on an arbitrary compact group. The Yang-Baxter sigma-model and the principal chiral model with a Wess-Zumino term both correspond to limits in which one of the two parameters vanishes.
We give a covariant realization of the doubled sigma-model formulation of duality-symmetric string theory within the general framework of para-Hermitian geometry. We define a notion of generalized metric on a para-Hermitian manifold and discuss its relation to Born geometry. We show that a Born geometry uniquely defines a worldsheet sigma-model with a para-Hermitian target space, and we describe its Lie algebroid gauging as a means of recovering the conventional sigma-model description of a physical string background as the leaf space of a foliated para-Hermitian manifold. Applying the Kotov-S…
We consider the double copy of massive Yang-Mills theory in four dimensions, whose decoupling limit is a nonlinear sigma model. The latter may be regarded as the leading terms in the low energy effective theory of a heavy Higgs model, in which the Higgs has been integrated out. The obtained double copy effective field theory contains a massive spin-2, massive spin-1 and a massive spin-0 field, and we construct explicitly its interacting Lagrangian up to fourth order in fields. We find that up to this order, the spin-2 self interactions match those of the dRGT massive gravity theory, and that a…
Classical equations of motion for three-dimensional sigma-models in curved background are solved by a transformation that follows from the Poisson-Lie T-plurality and transform them into the equations in the flat background. Transformations of coordinates that make the metric constant are found and used for solving the flat model. The Poisson-Lie transformation is explicitly performed by solving the PDE's for auxiliary functions and finding the relevant transformation of coordinates in the Drinfel'd double. String conditions for the solutions are preserved by the Poisson-Lie transformations. T…
We examine various properties of double field theory and the doubled string sigma model in the context of geometric quantisation. In particular we look at T-duality as the symplectic transformation related to an alternative choice of polarisation in the construction of the quantum bundle for the string. Following this perspective we adopt a variety of techniques from geometric quantisation to study the doubled space. One application is the construction of the double coherent state that provides the shortest distance in any duality frame and a stringy deformed Fourier transform.
In this letter we follow up recent work of Halverson-Kumar-Morrison on some exotic examples of gauged linear sigma models (GLSM's). Specifically, they describe a set of U(1) x Z_2 GLSM's with superpotentials that are quadratic in p fields, rather than linear as is typically the case. These theories RG flow to sigma models on branched double covers, where the double cover is realized via a Z_2 gerbe. For that gerbe structure, and hence the double cover, the Z_2 factor in the gauge group is essential. In this letter we propose an analogous geometric understanding of phases without that Z_2, in t…
We combine symmetry structures of ordinary (parallel directions) and dual (transversal directions) coordinates to construct the Dirac-Born-Infeld (DBI) theory. The ordinary coordinates are associated with the Neumann boundary conditions and the dual coordinates are associated with the Dirichlet boundary conditions. Gauge fields become scalar fields by exchanging the ordinary and dual coordinates. A gauge transformation of a generalized metric is governed by the generalized Lie derivative. The gauge transformation of the massless closed string theory gives the $C$-bracket, but the gauge transfo…
We construct an action for NSNS 5-branes which is manifestly covariant under O(d,d). This is done by doubling $d$ of the spacetime coordinates which appear in the worldvolume action. By formulating the DBI part of the action in a manner similar to a "gauged sigma model", only half the doubled coordinates genuinely appear. Our approach allows one to describe the full T-duality orbit of the IIB NS5 brane, the IIA KKM and their exotic relations in one formalism. Furthermore, by using ideas from double field theory, our action can be said to describe various aspects of non-geometric five-branes.
Riemannian coordinates for flat metrics corresponding to three--dimensional conformal Poisson--Lie T--dualizable sigma models are found by solving partial differential equations that follow from the transformations of the connection components. They are then used for finding general forms of the dilaton fields satisfying the vanishing beta equations of the sigma models.
We consider classical and quantum integrable sigma models and their relations with the solutions of renormalization group equations. We say that an integrable sigma model possesses the "nice" duality property if the dual quantum field theory has the weak coupling region. As an example, we consider the deformed $CP(n-1)$ sigma model with additional quantum degrees of freedom. We formulate the dual integrable field theory and use perturbed conformal field theory, perturbation theory, $S$-matrix, Bethe Ansatz and renormalization group methods to show that this field theory has the "nice" duality …
Starting from a sigma-model for a doubled target-space geometry, we show that the number of target-space dimensions can be reduced by half through a gauging procedure. We apply this formalism to a class of backgrounds relevant for double field theory, and illustrate how choosing different gaugings leads to string-theory configurations T-dual to each other. We furthermore discuss that given a conformal doubled theory, the reduced theories are conformal as well. As an example we consider the three-dimensional SU(2) WZW model and show that the only possible reduced backgrounds are the cigar and t…
T-duality is one of the essential elements of string theory. Recently, Hull has developed a formalism where the dimension of the target space is doubled so as to make T-duality manifest. This is then supplemented with a constraint equation that allows the connection to the usual string sigma model. This paper analyses the partition function of the doubled formalism by interpreting the constraint equation as that of a chiral scalar and then using holomorphic factorisation techniques to determine the partition function. We find there is quantum equivalence to the ordinary string once the topolog…
We continue the study of nonrelativistic string theory in background fields. Nonrelativistic string theory is described by a nonlinear sigma model that maps a relativistic worldsheet to a non-Lorentzian and non-Riemannian target space geometry, which is known to be string Newton-Cartan geometry. We develop the covariant background field method in this non-Riemannian geometry. We apply this background field method to compute the beta-functions of the nonlinear sigma model that describes nonrelativistic string theory on a string Newton-Cartan geometry background, in presence of a Kalb-Ramond two…
The principal sigma model and Abelian gauge fields coupling is studied. By expressing the first-order formulation of the gauge field equations an implicit on-shell scalar-gauge field decoupling structure is revealed. It is also shown that due to this decoupling structure the scalars of the theory belong to the pure sigma model and the gauge fields sector consists of a number of coupled Maxwell theories with currents partially induced by the scalars.
We define the open string version of the nonlinear sigma model on doubled geometry introduced by Hull and Reid-Edwards, and derive its boundary conditions. These conditions include the restriction of D-branes to maximally isotropic submanifolds as well as a compatibility condition with the Lie algebra structure on the doubled space. We demonstrate a systematic method to derive and classify D-branes from the boundary conditions, in terms of embeddings both in the doubled geometry and in the physical target space. We apply it to the doubled three-torus with constant H-flux and find D0-, D1-, and…
Four-dimensional Manin triples and Drinfeld doubles are classified and corresponding two-dimensional Poisson-Lie T-dual sigma models on them are constructed. The simplest example of a Drinfeld double allowing decomposition into two nontrivially different Manin triples is presented.
We propose an action for the extended sigma - models in the most general setting of the kinetic term allowed in the nontrivially deformed field - antifield formalism. We show that the classical motion equations do naturally take their desired canonical form.
We study the supersymmetric partition function of a 2d linear $σ$-model whose target space is a torus with a complex structure that varies along one worldsheet direction and a Kähler modulus that varies along the other. This setup is inspired by the dimensional reduction of a Janus configuration of 4d $\mathcal{N}=4$ $U(1)$ Super-Yang-Mills theory compactified on a mapping torus ($T^2$ fibered over $S^1$) times a circle with an $SL(2,\mathbb{Z})$ duality wall inserted on $S^1$, but our setup has minimal supersymmetry. The partition function depends on two independent elements of $SL(2,\mathbb{…
Recently, we have studied the general Virasoro construction at one loop in the background of the general non-linear sigma model. Here, we find the action formulation of these new conformal field theories when the background sigma model is itself conformal. In this case, the new conformal field theories are described by a large class of new spin-two gauged sigma models. As examples of the new actions, we discuss the spin-two gauged WZW actions, which describe the conformal field theories of the generic affine-Virasoro construction, and the spin-two gauged g/h coset constructions. We are able to…
Double Field Theory provides a geometric framework capable of describing string theory backgrounds that cannot be understood purely in terms of Riemannian geometry -- not only globally (`non-geometry'), but even locally (`non-Riemannian'). In this work, we show that the non-relativistic closed string theory of Gomis and Ooguri [1] arises precisely as such a non-Riemannian string background, and that the Gomis-Ooguri sigma model is equivalent to the Double Field Theory sigma model of [2] on this background. We further show that the target-space formulation of Double Field Theory on this non-Rie…
A four-dimensional N=2 supersymmetric non-linear sigma-model with the Eguchi-Hanson (ALE) target space and a non-vanishing central charge is rewritten to a classically equivalent and formally renormalizable gauged `linear' sigma-model over a non-compact coset space in N=2 harmonic superspace by making use of an N=2 vector gauge superfield as the Lagrange multiplier. It is then demonstrated that the N=2 vector gauge multiplet becomes dynamical after taking into account one-loop corrections due to quantized hypermultiplets. This implies the appearance of a composite gauge boson, a composite chir…
Auxiliary field methods in D=2 (or 3), N=2 supersymmetric (SUSY) nonlinear sigma models (NLSMs) are studied. For these models auxiliary fields as Lagrange multipliers belong to a vector or a chiral superfield, which gives a Kahler quotient of complexified gauge group or a holomorphic constraint on it, respectively. Using these, NLSMs on all Hermitian symmetric spaces were formulated previously. In this paper, we formulate new SUSY NLSMs on some rank-two Kahler coset spaces as SUSY gauge theories with two Fayet-Iliopoulos parameters.
The three-point functions of two scalar fields $σ$ and the higher spin field $h^{(\ell)}$ of HS(4) on the one side and of their proposed holographic images $α$ and $\mathcal{J^{(\ell)}}$ of the minimal conformal O(N) sigma model of dimension three on the other side are evaluated at leading perturbative order and compared in order to fix the coupling constant of HS(4). This necessitates a careful analysis of the local current $Ψ^{(\ell)}$ to which $h^{(\ell)}$ couples in HS(4) and which is bilinear in $σ$.
We study AKSZ-type BV constructions for the topological A- and B-models within a double field theory formulation that incorporates backgrounds with geometric and non-geometric fluxes. We relate them to a Courant sigma-model, on an open membrane, corresponding to a generalized complex structure, which reduces to the A- or B-models on the boundary. We introduce S-duality at the level of the membrane sigma-model based on the generalized complex structure, which exchanges the related AKSZ field theories, and interpret it as topological S-duality of the A- and B-models. Our approach leads to new cl…
We prove that the doubly lambda-deformed sigma-models, which include integrable cases, are canonically equivalent to the sum of two single lambda-deformed models. This explains the equality of the exact beta-functions and current anomalous dimensions of the doubly lambda-deformed sigma-models to those of two single lambda-deformed models. Our proof is based upon agreement of their Hamiltonian densities and of their canonical structure. Subsequently, we show that it is possible to take a well defined non-Abelian type limit of the doubly-deformed action. Last, but not least, by extending the abo…
Starting from the generic harmonic superspace action of the quaternion-Kähler sigma models and using the quotient approach we present, in an explicit form, a quaternion-Kähler extension of the double Taub-NUT metric. It possesses $U(1)\times U(1)$ isometry and supplies a new example of non-homogeneous Einstein metric with self-dual Weyl tensor.
We continue the program of extending the scattering equation framework by Cachazo, He and Yuan to a double-cover prescription. We discuss how to apply the double-cover formalism to effective field theories, with a special focus on the non-linear sigma model. A defining characteristic of the double-cover formulation is the emergence of new factorization relations. We present several factorization relations, along with a novel recursion relation. Using the recursion relation and a new prescription for the integrand, any non-linear sigma model amplitude can be expressed in terms of off-shell thre…
We show that two-dimensional sigma models are equivalent to certain perturbed conformal field theories. When the fields in the sigma model take values in a space G/H for a group G and a maximal subgroup H, the corresponding conformal field theory is the $k\to\infty$ limit of the coset model $(G/H)_k$, and the perturbation is related to the current of G. This correspondence allows us for example to find the free energy for the "O(n)" (=O(n)/O(n-1)) sigma model at non-zero temperature. It also results in a new approach to the CP^{n} model.
We study an inflation model with a nonlinear sigma field which has $SO(3)$ symmetry. The background solution of the nonlinear sigma field is proportional to the space coordinates linearly while keeping the homogeneous and isotropic background spacetime. We calculate the observable quantities including the power spectra of the scalar and tensor modes, the spectral indices, the tensor-to-scalar ratio, and the running of the spectral indices, and then constrain our model with the Planck 2015 observational data.
In these notes we study the duality between sigma-models and Toda QFT's. We claim that $\mathfrak{gl}(n|n)$ affine Toda field theory behaves in the strong coupling limit as $η-$deformed $\mathbb{CP}(n-1)$ sigma-model plus a free field.
