We construct a simple model for electrons in a three-dimensional crystal where a combination of short-range hopping and spin-orbit coupling results in nearly flat bands characterized by a non-trivial Z2 topological index. The flat band is separated from other bands by a bandgap much larger than the bandwidth. We discuss the fate of the many-body ground state of electrons in the flat band in the presence of repulsive interactions at partial filling and conjecture that it may become a three-dimensional fractional topological insulator if conventional magnetic instabilities can be avoided.
Topological band theory establishes a standardized framework for classifying different types of topological matters. Recent investigations have shown that hyperbolic lattices in non-Euclidean space can also be characterized by hyperbolic Bloch theorem. This theory promotes the investigation of hyperbolic band topology, where hyperbolic topological band insulators protected by first Chern numbers have been proposed. Here, we report a new finding on the construction of hyperbolic topological band insulators with a vanished first Chern number but a non-trivial second Chern number. Our model posse…
We show that two-dimensional non-Hermitian photonic crystals made of lossy material can exhibit non-trivial point gap topology in terms of topological winding in its complex frequency band structure. Such crystals can be either made of lossy isotropic media which is reciprocal, or lossy magneto-optical media which is non-reciprocal. We discuss the effects of reciprocity on the properties of the point gap topology. We also show that such a non-trivial point gap topology leads to non-Hermitian skin effect when the photonic crystal is truncated. In contrast to most previous studies on point gap t…

The geometric properties of a lattice can have profound consequences on its band spectrum. For example, symmetry constraints and geometric frustration can give rise to topologicially nontrivial and dispersionless bands, respectively. Line-graph lattices are a perfect example of both of these features: their lowest energy bands are perfectly flat, and here we develop a formalism to connect some of their geometric properties with the presence or absence of fragile topology in their flat bands. This theoretical work will enable experimental studies of fragile topology in several types of line-gra…
'Magic'-angle twisted bilayer graphene has received a lot of interest due to its flat bands with potentially non-trivial topology that lead to intricate correlated phases. A spectrum with flat bands, however, does not require a twist between multiple sheets of van der Waals materials, but rather can be realized with the application of an appropriate periodic potential. Here, we propose the imposition of a tailored periodic potential onto a single graphene layer through local perturbations that could be created via lithography or adatom manipulation, which also results in an energy spectrum fea…
In this letter we summarise our study of Su-Schrieffer-Hegger(SSH) model with a one dimensional non-orientable manifold as bulk. For this purpose a SSH model with any bulk (SAB) is introduced. We observe the following: (1) The topology of the SSH model is preserved even with a non-orientable bulk, (2) The appearance of a doubly degenerate flat band exactly at the Fermi level, (3) At half filling the band structure is metallic due to the complete overlap of valence and conduction band but the electrons will be localised because the bands are flat and (4) This system is unique because it has fla…
We study the sodium-iridates model on the honeycomb lattice with both BCS pairing potential and Hubbard interaction term. It is shown that this model can be exactly solved with appropriate choices of amplitude of pairing gaps, where the interacting terms are transformed to external field terms. The band structures of these exact solutions on both torus and cylinder geometry are discussed in great details. It is found that the ground state assumes an anti-ferromagnetic configuration, which breaks the time reversal symmetry spontaneously and renders the superconductor topologically trivial. On t…
In flat bands, superconductivity can lead to surprising transport effects. The superfluid "mobility", in the form of the superfluid weight $D_s$, does not draw from the curvature of the band but has a purely band-geometric origin. In a mean-field description, a non-zero Chern number or fragile topology sets a lower bound for $D_s$, which, via the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless mechanism, might explain the relatively high superconducting transition temperature measured in magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene (MATBG). For fragile topology, relevant for the bilayer system, the fate of this bound…
We study the electronic structure and band topology of fully relaxed twisted multi-layer graphene (TMLG). Isolated flat bands emerge in TMLG with the number of layers [$M+N$ with $M$ the layer number of the bottom few-layer graphene (FLG)] up to 10 and with various stacking orders, and most of them are on the hole side. The touched bands of FLGs around the Fermi level are split by the moiré coupling through the electron-hole asymmetry in low-energy bands of FLGs and by the vertical hopping between next-nearest layers. The full structural relaxation leads to global gaps that completely isolate …
While regular flat bands are good for enhancing the density of states and hence the gap, they are detrimental to the superfluid weight. We show that the predicted nontrivial topology of the two lowest flat bands of twisted bilayer graphene plays an important role in the enhancement of the superfluid weight and hence of superconductivity. We derive the superfluid weight (phase stiffness) of the TBLG superconducting flat bands with a uniform pairing, and show that it can be expressed as an integral of the Fubini-Study metric of the flat bands. This mirrors results already obtained for nonzero Ch…
In a class of carbon-based materials called polymerized triptycene, which consist of triptycene molecules and phenyls, exotic electronic structures such as Dirac cones and flat bands arise from the kagome-type network. In this paper, we theoretically investigate the tight-binding models for polymerized triptycene, focusing on the origin of flat bands and the topological properties. The mechanism of the existence of the flat bands is elucidated by using the "molecular-orbital" representation, which we have developed in the prior works. Further, we propose that the present material is a promisin…
Motivated by the recent experimental realizations of hyperbolic lattices in circuit quantum electrodynamics and in classical electric-circuit networks, we study flat bands and band-touching phenomena in such lattices. We analyze noninteracting nearest-neighbor hopping models on hyperbolic analogs of the kagome and dice lattices with heptagonal and octagonal symmetry. We show that two characteristic features of the energy spectrum of those models, namely the fraction of states in the flat band as well as the number of touching points between the flat band and the dispersive bands, can both be c…
