An efficient broadband sum frequency generation (SFG) technique using the two collinear optical parametric processes ω3=ω1+ω2 and ω4=ω1+ω3 is proposed. The technique uses chirped quasi-phase-matched gratings, which, in the undepleted pump approximation, make SFG analogous to adiabatic population transfer in three-state systems with crossing energies in quantum physics. If the local modulation period %for aperiodically poled quasi-phase-matching first makes the phase match occur for ω3 and then for ω4 SFG processes then the energy is converted adiabatically to the ω4 field. Efficient SFG of the ω4 field is also possible by the opposite direction of the local modulation sweep; then transient SFG of the ω3 field is strongly reduced. Most of these features remain valid in the nonlinear regime of depleted pump.
We propose an efficient broadband frequency generation technique for two collinear optical parametric processes $ω_3=ω_1+ω_2$ and $ω_4=ω_1-ω_2$. It exploits chirped quasi-phase-matched gratings, which in the undepleted pump approximation regime perform population transfer that is analogous to adiabatic population transfer in a three-state ``vee'' quantum system. The energy of the input fields is transferred adiabatically either into $ω_3$ or $ω_4$ field, depending on which of the two phase matchings occurs first by the local modulation period in the crystal. One can switch the output between $…

We study the theory of linearly chirped biphoton wave-packets produced in two basic quasi-phase-matching configurations: chirped photonic-like crystals and aperiodically poled crystals. The novelty is that these structures are considered as definite assembles of nonlinear layers that leads to detailed description of spontaneous parametric down-conversion (SPDC) processes through the discrete Gauss sums. We demonstrate that biphoton spectra for chirped photonic crystals involving a small number of layers consist from definite well-resolved spectral lines. We also discuss the forming of broadban…
One-dimensional photonic crystals with slowly varying, i.e. "chirped", lattice period are responsible for broadband light reflectance in many diverse biological contexts, ranging from the shiny coatings of various beetles to the eyes of certain butterflies. We present a quantum scattering analogy for light reflection from these adiabatically chirped photonic crystals (ACPCs) and apply a WKB-type approximation to obtain a closed-form expression for the reflectance. From this expression we infer several design principles, including a differential equation for the chirp pattern required to elicit…
Plasmonic enhancement of nonlinear light-matter interaction can be achieved via dedicated optimization of resonant plasmonic modes that are spectrally matched to the different wavelengths involved in the particular nonlinear optical process. In this work, we investigate the generation and enhancement of broadband four-wave mixing (FWM) in a plasmonic azimuthally chirped grating (ACG). The azimuthally varying grating periodicity in an ACG offers a well-defined channel to mediate the near field and the far field over a broad range of wavelengths. However, the particular mechanism responsible for…
Quantum entanglement of two photons created by spontaneous parametric downconversion (SPDC) can be used to probe quantum optical phenomena during a single cycle of light. Harris [Phys. Rev. Lett. 98, 063602 (2007)] suggested using ultrabroad parametric fluorescence generated from a quasi-phase-matched (QPM) device whose poling period is chirped. In the Harris\' s original proposal, it is assumed that the photons are collinearly generated and then spatially separated by frequency filtering. Here, we alternatively propose using noncollinearly generated SPDC. In our numerical calculation, to achi…
High-order harmonic generation in the presence of a chirped THz pulse is investigated numerically with a complete 3D non-adiabatic model. The assisting THz pulse illuminates the HHG gas cell laterally inducing quasi-phase-matching. We demonstrate that it is possible to compensate the phase mismatch during propagation and extend the macroscopic cutoff of a propagated strong IR pulse to the single-dipole cutoff. We obtain two orders of magnitude increase in the harmonic efficiency of cutoff harmonics ($\approx$170 eV) using a THz pulse of constant wavelength, and a further factor of 3 enhancemen…
We present a new approach to engineering broadband sources of entangled photon pairs for quantum interferometry. The source is based on quasi-phase-matched spontaneous parametric down conversion in a titanium diffused periodically poled lithium niobate waveguide with a strongly-chirped poling period. The proposed non-standard asymmetric poling mitigates phase distortions associated with the process of chirping. Asymmetric poling significantly broadens the entangled source bandwidth while preserving high visibility quantum interferometric sensing.
We report a new version of spectral phase interferometry for direct electric field reconstruction (SPIDER), which enables consistency checking through the simultaneous acquisition of multiple shears and offers a simple and precise calibration method. By mixing the test pulse with two spatially chirped ancilla fields we generate a single-shot interferogram which contains multiple shears, the spectral amplitude of the test pulse, and the reference phase, which is accurate for broadband pulses. All calibration parameters - shear, upconversion-frequency and reference phase position - can be accura…

Advances in the amplification and manipulation of ultrashort laser pulses has led to revolutions in several areas. Examples include chirped pulse amplification for generating high peak-power lasers, power-scalable amplification techniques, pulse shaping via modulation of spatially-dispersed laser pulses, and efficient frequency-mixing in quasi-phase-matched nonlinear crystals to access new spectral regions. In this work, we introduce and demonstrate a new platform for nonlinear optics which has the potential to combine all of these separate functionalities (pulse amplification, frequency trans…
We show that non-Hermitian engineering can play a positive role in quantum systems. This is in contrast to the widely accepted notion that optical losses are a foe that must be eliminated or, at least, minimized. We take advantage of the interplay between nonlinear interactions and loss to show that spectral-loss engineering can relax phase-matching conditions, enabling generation of broadband pseudothermal states at new frequencies. This opens the door for utilizing the full potential of semiconductor materials that exhibit giant nonlinearities but lack the necessary ingredients for achieving…
We present a high-power source of broadband terahertz radiation covering the whole THz spectral region (0.1-30 THz). The two-color gas plasma generation process is driven by a state-of-the-art Ytterbium fiber chirped pulse amplification system based on coherent combination of 16 rod-type amplifiers. Prior to the THz generation, the pulses are spectrally broadened in a multi-pass-cell and compressed to 37 fs with a pulse-energy of 1.3 mJ at a repetition rate of 500 kHz. A gas-jet scheme has been employed for the THz generation, increasing the efficiency of the process to 0.1%. The air-biased-co…
The deployment of plasmonic nanostructures to enhance nonlinear signal generation requires effective far-to-near field coupling and phase matching for frequency conversion. While the latter can be easily achieved at plasmonic hotspots, the former is an antenna problem that requires dedicated structural design and optimization. Plasmonic gratings are a simple but effective platform for nonlinear signal generation since they provide a well-defined momentum for photon-plasmon coupling and local hotspots for frequency conversion. In this work, a plasmonic azimuthally chirped grating (ACG), which p…
Future quantum information networks operated on telecom channels require qubit transfer between different wavelengths while preserving quantum coherence and entanglement. Qubit transfer is a nonlinear optical process, but currently the types of atoms used for quantum information processing and storage are limited by the narrow bandwidth of up-conversion available. Here we present the first experimental demonstration of broadband and high-efficiency quasi-phase matching second harmonic generation (SHG) in a chip-scale periodically poled lithium niobate thin film. We achieve large bandwidth of u…
Broadband mid-infrared (MIR) molecular spectroscopy demands a bright and broadband light source in the molecular fingerprint region. To this end, intra-pulse difference frequency generation (IDFG) has shown excellent properties among various techniques. However, previous IDFG systems have mainly used unconventional long-wavelength 2-$μ$m ultrashort pulsed lasers. A few systems have been demonstrated with 1-$μ$m lasers, but they use bulky 100-W-class high-power Yb thin-disk lasers. In this work, we demonstrate a simple and robust approach of 1-$μ$m-pumped broadband IDFG with a conventional mode…
We theoretically propose a method for optical isolation based on adiabatic nonlinear sum frequency generation in a chirped quasi-phase-matching crystal with strong absorption at the generated sum frequency wave. The method does not suffer from limitations of dynamic reciprocity found in other nonlinear optical isolation methods, and can provide tunable optical isolation with ultrafast all-optical switching capability. Moreover, as an adiabatic technique it is robust to variations in the optical design and is relatively broadband.
Generating photon pairs via spontaneous parametric down-conversion (SPDC) in nonlinear crystals is important for a wide range of quantum optics experiments with spectral properties such as their bandwidths often being a crucial concern. Here, we show the generic existence of particular phase-matching conditions in quasi-phase matched KTP, MgO:LN and SLT crystals that lead to ultra-broadband, widely non-degenerate photon pairs. It is based on the existence of group-velocity matched, far apart wavelength pairs and for 2 mm long crystals results in SPDC bandwidths between 15 and 25 THz (FWHM) for…
High-harmonic generation (HHG) provides short-wavelength light that is useful for precision spectroscopy and probing ultrafast dynamics. We report efficient, phase-coherent harmonic generation up to 9th-order (333 nm) in chirped periodically poled lithium niobate waveguides driven by phase-stable $\leq$12-nJ, 100 fs pulses at 3 $μ$m with 100 MHz repetition rate. A mid-infrared to ultraviolet-visible conversion efficiency as high as 10% is observed, amongst an overall 23% conversion of the fundamental to all harmonics. We verify the coherence of the harmonic frequency combs despite the complex …
We propose non-phase-matched sum frequency generation (SFG) as a method for characterizing broadband multimode light. We demonstrate its advantages using high-gain parametric down conversion (PDC) as an example. By generating the sum frequency in the near-surface region of a nonlinear crystal, we increase the SFG efficiency and get rid of the modulation caused by chromatic dispersion, known as Maker fringes. The obtained results interpreted in terms of the Schmidt mode formalism reveal the sensitivity of the SFG spectrum to the number of frequency modes. Furthermore, we demonstrate efficient n…
Optical frequency conversion processes in nonlinear materials are limited in wavelength by the accessible phase matching and the required high pump powers. In this letter, we report a novel broadband phase matching (PM) technique in high quality factor (Q) whispering gallery mode (WGM) resonators made of birefringent crystalline materials. This technique relies on two interacting WGMs, one with constant and the other with spatially oscillating phase velocity. Thus, phase matching occurs cyclically. The technique can be implemented with a WGM resonator with its disk plane parallel to the optic …
High-quality crystals without inversion symmetry are the conventional platform to achieve optical frequency conversion via three wave-mixing. In bulk crystals, efficient wave-mixing relies on phase-matching configurations, while at the micro- and nano-scale it requires resonant mechanisms that enhance the nonlinear light-matter interaction. These strategies commonly result in wavelength-specific performances and narrowband applications. Disordered photonic materials, made up of a random assembly of optical nonlinear crystals, enable a broadband tunability in the random quasi-phase-matching (RQ…
The concept of `flat optics' is quickly conquering different fields of photonics, but its implementation in quantum optics is still at infancy. In particular, polarization entanglement, which is central to quantum photonics due to the simplicity of polarization qubit encoding and control, is so far not realized on flat platforms. Meanwhile, relaxed phase matching of flat nonlinear optical sources enables enormous freedom in tailoring their polarization properties. Here we use this freedom to generate photon pairs with tunable polarization entanglement via spontaneous parametric down-conversion…
Squeezed light is a key quantum resource that enables quantum advantages for sensing, networking, and computing applications. The scalable generation and manipulation of squeezed light with integrated platforms are highly desired for the development of quantum technology with continuous variables. In this letter, we demonstrate squeezed light generation with thin-film lithium niobate integrated photonics. Para-metric down-conversion is realized with quasi-phase matching using ferroelectric domain engineering. With sub-wavelength mode confinement, efficient nonlinear processes can be observed w…
We report on the generation of broadband, high-energy femtosecond pulses centered at 1.28 um by stimulated Raman scattering in pressurized hydrogen cell. Stimulated Raman scattering is performed by two chirped and delayed pulses originating from a multi-mJ Ti:Sapphire amplifier. The Stokes pulse carries energy of 4.4 mJ and is recompressed down to 66 fs by reflective grating pair. We characterized the short-wavelength mid-infrared source in view of energy stability, beam profile and conversion efficiency at a repetition rate of 100 Hz and 10 Hz. The demonstrated laser will benefit intense THz …
In this paper we present universal broadband multi-resonator quantum memory (MR-QM) based on the spatial-frequency combs of the microresonators coupled with a common waveguide. Here we found new Bragg-type impedance matching condition for the coupling of the microresonators with a waveguide field which provides an efficient broadband quantum storage. The obtained analytical solution for the microresonator fields enables sustainable parametric control of all the memory characteristics.
The nonlinear metamaterials have been shown to provide nonlinear properties with high nonlinear conversion efficiency and in a myriad of light manipulation. Here we study terahertz generation from nonlinear metasurface consisting of single layer nanoscale split-ring resonator array. The terahertz generation due to optical rectification by the second-order nonlinearity of the split-ring resonator is investigated by a time-domain implementation of the hydrodynamic model for electron dynamics in metal. The results show that the nonlinear metasurface enables us to generate broadband terahertz radi…
High absorption in a wide frequency band has attracted considerable interest since their potential applications in frequency spectrum imaging systems and anti-radar cloaking. In this paper, a polarization-independent, ultra-broadband and omnidirectional terahertz absorber is proposed, fabricated and evaluated. It is experimentally demonstrated that an over 95% absorption can be obtained in the frequency range of 0.75~2.41 THz. Attributing to the multi-frequency destructive interference between the layers and the impedance-matching condition of the grating, five successive absorption peaks at 0…
We present a new variant of dispersion scan (d-scan) based on surface third-harmonic generation (STHG) and a ptychographic algorithm taylored for full retrieval (amplitude and phase) of broadband laser pulses. We demonstrate the technique by temporally measuring and compressing few-cycle pulses with 7 fs and 2.5 nJ from a Ti:Sapphire oscillator, using a sapphire window as the nonlinear medium. The results are in very good agreement with standard second-harmonic d-scan measurements based on a nonlinear crystal. The intrinsically broadband and phase-matching-independent nature of STHG make this …
An influence of multi-line CO laser focusing on spectral characteristics of broadband sum-frequency generation in ZnGeP2 nonlinear crystal was experimentally and numerically studied. Maximal frequency conversion was experimentally observed under tight focusing of the multi-line rather than single-line CO laser. The tight focusing resulted in broadening sum-frequency generation spectrum and increasing total, i.e. integrated over the spectrum, frequency conversion efficiency. These effects were due to increasing phase-matching bandwidth and angular dispersion. Maximal conversion efficiency of th…
We generate a 200-nm optical frequency comb at 1.5 microns by injecting two single-frequency lasers into a highly nonlinear fiber, and explore its spectral phase properties and high power to demonstrate full nonlinear conversion into its second harmonic. Combs of optical frequencies with 100-nm (~ 48 THz) bandwidths, centered at 790-800 nm and spaced by 0.8-1 nm (380-470 GHz) were produced by second harmonic and multiple sum frequency generation simply by focusing into a 2-mm long nonlinear crystal. Conventional birefringence phase matching was used in normal incidence configuration without ti…
We propose a new type of broadband and low repetition rate frequency comb generator which has the shape of an elongated and nanoscale-shallow optical bottle microresonator created at the surface of an optical fiber. The free spectral range (FSR) of the broadband azimuthal eigenfrequency series of this resonator is the exact multiple of the FSR of the dense and narrowband axial series. The effective radius variation of the microresonator is close to a parabola with a nanoscale height which is greater or equal to lambda/2pi*n0 (here lambda is the characteristic radiation wavelength and n0 is the…
We demonstrated broadband highly efficient optical nonlinear processes in on-chip integrated lithium niobate (LN) microdisk resonators. The Q factors of the micro-resonators fabricated by femtosecond laser writing and chemo-mechanical polishing are reliably above 10^8, approaching the intrinsic material absorption limit of LN. Broadband nonlinear processes, including optical parametric oscillation (OPO), second harmonic generation (SHG), third harmonic generation, and fourth harmonic generation, were observed with ultrahigh efficiencies in the same LN microdisk without introducing domain inver…
Sub-sampling can acquire directly a passband within a broad radio frequency (RF) range, avoiding down-conversion and low-phase-noise tunable local oscillation (LO). However, sub-sampling suffers from band folding and self-image interference. In this paper we propose a frequency-oriented sub-sampling to solve the two problems. With ultrashort optical pulse and a pair of chromatic dispersions, the broadband RF signal is firstly short-time Fourier-transformed to a spectrum-spread pulse. Then a time slot, corresponding to the target spectrum slice, is coherently optical-sampled with in-phase/quadr…
We are reporting on terahertz generation from organic crystal BNA using a 1.15 to 1.55 um near infrared pump. We observed a very large emission spectrum extending up to 7 THz, compared to 2.5 THz from Ti:Sa pump in previous reports. The maximum optical-to-THz conversion efficiency in our experiment was 0.8% at 1 kHz repetition rate and without saturation leading to a peak electric field of 1 GV/m. Our results show pronounced phase matching privilege for intense terahertz generation using a pump in the 1.15 to 1.25 um range where high energy near infrared pump sources operate.
We present a comprehensive overview of different types of parametric interactions in nonlinear optics which are associated with simultaneous phase-matching of several optical processes in quadratic nonlinear media, the so-called multistep parametric interactions. We discuss a number of possibilities of double and multiple phase-matching in engineered structures with the sign-varying second-order nonlinear susceptibility, including (i) uniform and non-uniform quasi-phase-matched (QPM) periodic optical superlattices, (ii) phase-reversed and periodically chirped QPM structures, and (iii) uniform …
Unidirectional wave propagation in nonreciprocal structures enables exciting opportunities to control and enhance wave-matter interactions in extreme ways. Within this context, here we investigate the possibility of using terminated unidirectional plasmonic waveguides to enhance typically weak nonlinear effects by orders of magnitude. We theoretically demonstrate remarkable levels of electric field enhancement and confinement (field hot-spots) when the unidirectional waveguiding structure is terminated with a suitable boundary that fully stops the one-way mode. Such a large field enhancement, …
We demonstrate a new regime for mid-infrared optical parametric chirped pulse amplification (OPCPA) based on achromatic quasi-phase-matching. Our mid-infrared OPCPA system is based on collinear aperiodically poled lithium niobate (APPLN) pre-amplifiers and a non-collinear PPLN power amplifier. The idler output has a bandwidth of 800 nm centered at 3.4 $μ$m. After compression, we obtain a pulse duration of 44.2 fs and a pulse energy of 21.8 $μ$J at a repetition rate of 50 kHz. We explain the wide applicability of the non-collinear QPM amplification scheme we used, including how it can enable oc…
Chi-3 micro resonators have enabled compact and portable frequency comb generation, but require sophisticated dispersion control. Here we demonstrate an alternative approach using a chi-2 sheet cavity, where the dispersion requirement is relaxed by cavity phase matching. 21.2 THz broadband comb generation is achieved with uniform line spacing of 133.0 GHz, despite a relatively large dispersion of 275.4 fs^2/mm around 1064nm. With 22.6 % high slope efficiency and 14.9 kW peak power handling, this chi-2 comb can be further stabilized for navigation, telecommunication, astronomy, and spectroscopy…
Phase-matched nonlinear processes exhibit a tradeoff between the conversion efficiency and the acceptance bandwidth. Adiabatic nonlinear processes, in which the phase mismatch varies slowly along the interaction length, enable us to overcome this tradeoff, allowing an efficient frequency conversion with broad spectral and thermal bandwidths. Until now, the variation in the phase mismatch condition was mainly based on quasi-phase matching in ferroelectric crystals. However, this solution is limited to low power sources. Here, instead, we study the adiabatic second harmonic in birefringently pha…
