We examine numerically the post-merger regime of two Schwarzschild black holes in non head-on collision. Our treatment is made in the realm of non-axisymmetric Robinson-Trautman spacetimes which are appropriate for the description of the system. Characteristic initial data for the system are constructed and the Robinson-Trautman equation is integrated using a numerical code based on the Galerkin spectral method. The collision is planar, restricted to the plane determined by the directions of the two initial colliding black holes, with the net momentum fluxes of gravitational waves confined to this plane. We evaluate the efficiency of mass-energy extraction, the total energy and momentum carried out by gravitational waves and the momentum distribution of the remnant black hole. Our analysis is based on the Bondi-Sachs four momentum conservation laws. Head-on collisions and orthogonal collisions constitute, respectively, upper and lower bounds to the power emission and to the efficiency of mass-energy extraction by gravitational waves. The momentum extraction and the pattern of the momentum fluxes, as a function of the incidence angle, are examined. The momentum extraction characterizes a regime of strong deceleration of the system. The angular pattern of gravitational wave signals is also examined. They are typically bremsstrahlung for early times emission. Gravitational waves are also emitted outside the plane of collision but this component has a zero net momentum flux. The relation between the incidence angle of collision and the exit angle of the remnant closely approximates a relation for inelastic collisions of classical particles in Newtonian dynamics.
We report a degeneracy between the gravitational-wave signals from quasi-circular precessing black-hole mergers and those from extremely eccentric mergers, namely head-on collisions. Performing model selection on numerically simulated signals of head-on collisions using models for quasi-circular binaries we find that, for signal-to-noise ratios of 15 and 25, typical of Advanced LIGO observations, head-on mergers with respective total masses of $M\in (125,300)M_\odot$ and $M\in (200,440)M_\odot$ would be identified as precessing quasi-circular intermediate-mass black hole binaries, located at a…

Proca stars are self-gravitating Bose-Einstein condensates obtained as numerical stationary solutions of the Einstein-(complex)-Proca system. These solitonic can be both stable and form dynamically from generic initial data by the mechanism of gravitational cooling. In this paper we further explore the dynamical properties of these solitonic objects by performing both head-on collisions and orbital mergers of equal mass Proca stars, using fully non-linear numerical evolutions. For the head-on collisions, we show that the end point and the gravitational waveform from these collisions depends on…
We present a robust method to characterize the gravitational wave emission from the remnant of a neutron star coalescence. Our approach makes only minimal assumptions about the morphology of the signal and provides a full posterior probability distribution of the underlying waveform. We apply our method on simulated data from a network of advanced ground-based detectors and demonstrate the gravitational wave signal reconstruction. We study the reconstruction quality for different binary configurations and equations of state for the colliding neutron stars. We show how our method can be used to…
Fully non-linear numerical evolutions of the Einstein-(multi)--Klein-Gordon equations are performed to study head-on collisions of $\ell$-boson stars. Despite being spherically symmetric, $\ell$-boson stars have a (hidden) frame of reference, used in defining their individual multipolar fields. To assess the impact of their relative orientation, we perform simulations with different angles between the axes of the two colliding stars. Additionally, two scenarios are considered for the colliding stars: that they are composites of either the same or different scalar fields. Despite some model-spe…
The lightlike limit of boosted black hole solutions with one angular momentum is considered for $D \geq4$ dimensions. The boost is performed parallel to the angular momentum and the lightlike limit is done by means of perturbative expansions. We shown that for $D=4$ and $D> 5$ the lightlike limit cannot be extended inside the ring singularity. Then, for $D = 5$ we discuss the arising of trapped surfaces in the head-on collision. We find that, inside the validity of the perturbative analysis we do, a trapped surface with topology $\mathbb R \times \mathbb S_1 \times\mathbb S_1$ seems to appear …
In this work we study some features of head-on mergers of equilibrium solutions of the Gross-Pitaevskii-Poisson system that rules the dynamics of the ultralight bosonic dark matter model. The importance of equilibrium solutions is that they play the role of halo cores in structure formation simulations. We consider a given range of initial conditions in order to sample the parameter space in terms of mass ratio and head-on momentum. In each case we analyze the relaxation process induced by gravitational cooling in the high and low momentum regimes and estimate the relaxation time scales in eac…
Density profiles of ultralight Bose-Condensate dark matter inferred from numerical simulations of structure formation, ruled by the Gross-Pitaevskii-Poisson (GPP) system of equations, have a core-tail structure. Multi-state equilibrium configurations of the GPP system on the other hand, have a similar core-tail density profile. We now submit these multi-state configurations to highly dynamical scenarios and show their potential as providers of appropriate density profiles of structures. What we do is to present the simulation of head-on collisions between two equilibrium configurations of the …
Long baseline atom interferometers offer an exciting opportunity to explore mid-frequency gravitational waves. In this work we survey the landscape of possible contributions to the total 'gravitational wave background' in this frequency band and advocate for targeting this observable. Such an approach is complimentary to searches for resolved mergers from individual sources and may have much to reveal about the Universe. We find that the inspiral phases of stellar-mass compact binaries cumulatively produce a signal well within reach of the proposed AION-km and AEDGE experiments. Hypothetical p…
We find strong numerical evidence for a new phenomenon in a binary black hole spacetime, namely the merger of marginally outer trapped surfaces (MOTSs). By simulating the head-on collision of two non-spinning unequal mass black holes, we observe that the MOTS associated with the final black hole merges with the two initially disjoint surfaces corresponding to the two initial black holes. This yields a connected sequence of MOTSs interpolating between the initial and final state all the way through the non-linear binary black hole merger process. In addition, we show the existence of a MOTS wit…
Recent advances in numerical relativity have revealed how marginally trapped surfaces behave when black holes merge. It is now known that interesting topological features emerge during the merger, and marginally trapped surfaces can have self-intersections. This paper presents the most detailed study yet of the physical and geometric aspects of this scenario. For the case of a head-on collision of non-spinning black holes, we study in detail the world tube formed by the evolution of marginally trapped surfaces. In the first of this two-part study, we focus on geometrical properties of the dyna…
In this second part of a two-part paper, we discuss numerical simulations of a head-on merger of two non-spinning black holes. We resolve the fate of the original two apparent horizons by showing that after intersecting, their world tubes "turn around" and continue backwards in time. Using the method presented in the first paper to locate these surfaces, we resolve several such world tubes evolving and connecting through various bifurcations and annihilations. This also draws a consistent picture of the full merger in terms of apparent horizons, or more generally, marginally outer trapped surf…
We numerically study the algebraic properties of the Weyl tensor through the merger of two non-spinning black holes (BHs). We are particularly interested in the conjecture that for such a vacuum spacetime, which is zeroth-order algebraically general, a geometric horizon (GH), on which the spacetime is algebraically special and which is identified by the vanishing of a complex scalar invariant (${\mathcal{D}}$), characterizes a smooth foliation independent surface (horizon) associated with the BH. In the first simulation we investigate the level-$0$ sets of $\text{Re}({\mathcal{D}})$ (since $\t…
We resolve the fate of the two original apparent horizons during the head-on merger of two non-spinning black holes. We show that following the appearance of the outer common horizon and subsequent inter-penetration of the original horizons, they continue to exist for a finite period of time before they are individually annihilated by unstable MOTSs. The inner common horizon vanishes in a similar, though independent, way. This completes the understanding of the analogue of the event horizon's "pair of pants" diagram for the apparent horizon. Our result is facilitated by a new method for locati…
We present gauge invariant spectral Cauchy characteristic extraction. We compare gravitational waveforms extracted from a head-on black hole merger simulated in two different gauges by two different codes. We show rapid convergence, demonstrating both gauge invariance of the extraction algorithm and consistency between the legacy Pitt null code and the much faster Spectral Einstein Code (SpEC).

Scalar fields coupled to the Gauss-Bonnet invariant can undergo a tachyonic instability, leading to spontaneous scalarization of black holes. Studies of this effect have so far been restricted to single black hole spacetimes. We present the first results on dynamical scalarization in head-on collisions and quasicircular inspirals of black hole binaries with numerical relativity simulations. We show that black hole binaries can either form a scalarized remnant or dynamically descalarize by shedding off its initial scalar hair. The observational implications of these findings are discussed.
We study in detail the dynamics and stability of marginally trapped surfaces during a binary black hole merger. This is the second in a two-part study. The first part studied the basic geometric aspects of the world tubes traced out by the marginal surfaces and the status of the area increase law. Here we continue and study the dynamics of the horizons during the merger, again for the head-on collision of two non-spinning black holes. In particular we follow the spectrum of the stability operator during the course of the merger for all the horizons present in the problem and implement systemat…
Advanced LIGO-Virgo reported a short gravitational-wave signal (GW190521) interpreted as a quasi-circular merger of black holes, one populating the pair-instability supernova gap, forming a remnant black hole of $M_f\sim 142 M_\odot$ at a luminosity distance of $d_L \sim 5.3$ Gpc. With barely visible pre-merger emission, however, GW190521 merits further investigation of the pre-merger dynamics and even of the very nature of the colliding objects. We show that GW190521 is consistent with numerically simulated signals from head-on collisions of two (equal mass and spin) horizonless vector boson …
The gravitational wave observations of colliding black holes have opened a new window into the unexplored extreme gravity sector of physics, where the gravitational fields are immensely strong, non-linear, and dynamical. 10 binary black hole merger events observed so far can be used to test Einstein's theory of general relativity, which has otherwise been proven to agree with observations from several sources in the weak- or static-field regimes. One interesting future possibility is to detect gravitational waves from GW150914-like stellar-mass black hole binaries with both ground-based and sp…
A portion of light scalar dark matter, especially axions, may organize into gravitationally bound clumps (stars) and be present in large number in the galaxy today. It is therefore of utmost interest to determine if there are novel observational signatures of this scenario. Work has shown that for moderately large axion-photon couplings, such clumps can undergo parametric resonance into photons, for clumps above a critical mass $M^{\star}_c$ determined precisely by some of us in Ref. [1]. In order to obtain a clump above the critical mass in the galaxy today would require mergers. In this work…
With mass ratio larger than $\sim 5$ (which depends on the black hole spin and the star radius), star disruption is not expected for a black hole merging with a neutron star during the final plunge phase. In the late inspiral stage, the black hole is likely charged as it cuts through the magnetic field carried by the neutron star, leaving a temporarily charged black hole after merger. The unstable charged state of the remnant black hole rapidly neutralizes by interacting with the surrounding plasma and photons, which we investigate in first principle by numerically solving a coupled set of Bol…
The next two decades are expected to open the door to the first coincident detections of electromagnetic (EM) and gravitational wave (GW) signatures associated with massive black hole (MBH) binaries heading for coalescence. These detections will launch a new era of multimessenger astrophysics by expanding this growing field to the low-frequency GW regime and will provide an unprecedented understanding of the evolution of MBHs and galaxies. They will also constitute fundamentally new probes of cosmology and would enable unique tests of gravity. The aim of this Living Review is to provide an int…
