We investigate the period function of $\sum_{n=1}^\inftyσ_a(n)\e{nz}$, showing it can be analytically continued to $|\arg z|<π$ and studying its Taylor series. We use these results to give a simple proof of the Voronoi formula and to prove an exact formula for the second moments of the Riemann zeta function. Moreover, we introduce a family of cotangent sums, functions defined over the rationals, that generalize the Dedekind sum and share with it the property of satisfying a reciprocity formula. In particular, we find a reciprocity formula for the Vasyunin sum.
We consider cotangent sums associated to the zeros of the Estermann zeta function considered by the authors in their previous paper [5]. We settle a question on the rate of growth of the moments of these cotangent sums left open in [5], and obtain a simpler proof of the equidistribution of these sums.
The purpose of the present paper is to provide a general overview of a variety of results related to a category of cotangent sums which have been proven to be associated to the so-called Nyman-Beurling criterion for the Riemann Hypothesis. These sums are also related to the Estermann Zeta function.
We show that an asymptotic property of the determinants of certain matrices whose entries are finite sums of cotangents with rational arguments is equivalent to the GRH for odd Dirichlet characters. This is then connected to the existence of certain quantum modular forms related to Maass Eisenstein series.
We settle a question on the rate of growth of the moments of cotangent sums considered by the authors in their previous papers [8], [9]. We even obtain the true order of magnitude of these moments. We include as well the moments of order $2k$ between fixed multiples of $(2k)!/π^{2k}$.
Let a, a_1, ..., a_d be positive integers, m_1, ..., m_d nonnegative integers, and z_1, ..., z_d complex numbers. We study expressions of the form \[ \sum_{k \text{mod} a} \prod_{j=1}^d \cot^{(m_j)} π(\frac{k a_j}{a} + z_j ) . \] Here the sum is taken over all k mod a for which the summand is not singular. These Dedekind cotangent sums generalize and unify various arithmetic sums introduced by Dedekind, Rademacher, Apostol, Carlitz, Zagier, Berndt, Meyer, Sczech, and Dieter. Generalized Dedekind sums appear in various areas such as analytic and algebraic number theory, topology, algebraic and …
Cotangent sums are associated to the zeros of the Estermann zeta function. They have also proven to be of importance in the Nyman-Beurling criterion for the Riemann Hypothesis. The main result of the paper is the proof of the existence of a unique positive measure μ on $\mathbb{R}$, with respect to which certain normalized cotangent sums are equidistributed. Improvements as well as further generalizations of asymptotic formulas regarding the relevant cotangent sums are obtained. We also prove an asymptotic formula for a more general cotangent sum as well as asymptotic results for the moments o…
Cotangent sums play a significant role in the Nyman-Beurling criterion for the Riemann Hypothesis. Here we investigate the maximum of the values of these cotangent sums over various sets of rational numbers in short intervals.
We prove the existence of reciprocity formulae for sums of the form $\sum_{m=1}^{k-1}f(\frac{m}{k})\cot(π\frac{m h}k)$ where $f$ is a piecewise $C^1$ function, featuring an alternating phenomenon not visible in the clas…
We obtain new trigonometric identities, which are some product-to-sum type formulas for the higher derivative of the cotangent and cosecant functions. Further, from specializations of our formulas, we derive not only various known reciprocity laws of generalized Dedekind sums but also new reciprocity laws of generalized Dedekind sums.
We obtain a new motivated proof of the reciprocity law for Dedekind sums by computing the constant coefficient of the Ehrhart polynomial for a rectangular triangle in two ways. On the one hand, the constant term is the Euler characteristic, and on the other hand it is given by a cotangent Laurent expansion.
We obtain new trigonometric identities, which are product-to-sum type formulas for derivative of the cosecant and cotangent functions. Further, from specializations of our formulas, we derive new reciprocity laws of generalized Dedekind sums.
Recent work of Bettin and Conrey on the period functions of Eisenstein series naturally gave rise to the Dedekind-like sum \[ c_{a}\left(\frac{h}{k}\right) \ = \ k^{a}\sum_{m=1}^{k-1}\cot\left(\frac{πmh}{k}\right)ζ\left(-a,\frac{m}{k}\right), \] where $a\in\mathbb{C}$, $h$ and $k$ are positive coprime integers, and $ζ(a,x)$ denotes the Hurwitz zeta function. We derive a new reciprocity theorem for these Bettin--Conrey sums, which in the case of an odd negative integer $a$ can be explicitly given in terms of Bernoulli numbers. This, in turn, implies explicit formulas for the period functions ap…
In this paper, a transformation formula under modular substitutions is derived for a large class of generalized Eisenstein series. Appearing in the transformation formulae are generalizations of Dedekind sums involving the periodic Bernoulli function. Reciprocity theorems are proved for these Dedekind sums. Furthermore, as an application of the transformation formulae, relations between various infinite series and evaluations of several infinite series are deduced. Finally, we consider these sums for some special cases.
We prove a Vasyunin-type formula for an autocorrelation function arising from a Nyman-Beurling criterion generalized to a probabilistic framework. This formula can also be seen as a reciprocity formula for cotangent sums, related to the ones proven in [BC13], [ABB17].
We present a new and elegant integral approach to computing the Gardner-Fisher trigonometric power sum, which is given by $$ S_{m,v}=\left(\frac π{2m}\right)^{2v}\sum_{k=1}^{m-1}\cos^{-2v}\left(\frac{kπ}{2m}\right)\, , $$ We present a new and elegant integral approach to computing the Gardner-Fisher trigonometric power sum, which is given by $$ S_{m,v}=\left(\frac π{2m}\right)^{2v}\sum_{k=1}^{m-1}\cos^{-2v}\left(\frac{kπ}{2m}\right)\, , $$ where $m$ and $v$ are positive integers. This method not only confirms the results obtained earlier by an empirical method, but it is also much more expedie…
The present paper proves that if for a power sum $α$ over $\ZZ$ the length of the period of the continued fraction for $\sqrt{α(n)}$ is constant for infinitely many even (resp. odd) $n$, then $\sqrt{α(n)}$ admits a functional continued fraction expansion for all even (resp. odd) $n$, except finitely many; in particular, for such $n$, the partial quotients can be expressed by power sums of the same kind.
This work brings techniques from the theory of recurrent integer sequences to the problem of balancedness of symmetric Boolean functions. In particular, the periodicity modulo $p$ ($p$ odd prime) of exponential sums of symmetric Boolean functions is considered. Periods modulo $p$, bounds for periods and relations between them are obtained for these exponential sums. The concept of avoiding primes is also introduced. This concept and the bounds presented in this work are used to show that some classes of symmetric Boolean functions are not balanced. In particular, every elementary symmetric Boo…
In this paper, we investigate the distribution of the maximum of partial sums of families of $m$-periodic complex valued functions satisfying certain conditions. We obtain precise uniform estimates for the distribution function of this maximum in a near optimal range. Our results apply to partial sums of Kloosterman sums and other families of $\ell$-adic trace functions, and are as strong as those obtained by Bober, Goldmakher, Granville and Koukoulopoulos for character sums. In particular, we improve on the recent work of the third author for Birch sums. However, unlike character sums, we are…
We present a class of multiplicative functions $f:\mathbb{N}\to\mathbb{C}$ with bounded partial sums. The novelty here is that our functions do not need to have modulus bounded by $1$. The key feature is that they pretend to be the constant function $1$ and that for some prime $q$, $\sum_{k=0}^\infty \frac{f(q^k)}{q^k}=0$. These combined with other conditions guarantee that these functions are periodic and have sum equal to zero inside each period. Further, we study the class of multiplicative functions $f=f_1\ast f_2$, where each $f_j$ is multiplicative and periodic with bounded partial sums.…
Let $X=\text{ }\mathbb{P}^{1} - (\{0,\infty\} \cup μ_{N})\text{ }/\text{ }W(\mathbb{F}_{q})$, with $N \in \mathbb{N}^{\ast}$ and $\mathbb{F}_{q}$ of characteristic $p$ prime to $N$ and containing a primitive $N$-th root of unity. We establish an explicit theory of the crystalline Frobenius of the pro-unipotent fundamental groupoid of $X$. In part I, we have computed explicitly the Frobenius action. In part II, we use this computation to understand explicitly the algebraic relations of cyclotomic $p$-adic multiple zeta values. We have used the ideas and the vocabulary of the Galois theory of pe…

We generalize results of Duke, Garcia, Hyde, Lutz and others on the distribution of sums of roots of unity related to Gaussian periods to obtain equidistribution of similar sums over zeros of arbitrary integral polynomials. We also interpret these results in terms of trace functions, and generalize them to higher rank trace functions.
When looking at how periods of $π_{1}^{\mathfrak{m}}(\mathbb{P}^{1}\diagdown \lbrace 0, 1, \infty \rbrace )$, i.e. multiple zeta values, embeds into periods of $π_{1}^{\mathfrak{m}}(\mathbb{P}^{1}\diagdown \lbrace 0, \pm 1, \infty \rbrace )$, i.e. Euler sums, an explicit criteria via the coaction $Δ$ acting on their motivic versions comes out. In this paper, adopting this Galois descent approach, we present a new basis for the space $\mathcal{H}^{1}$ of motivic multiple zeta values via motivic Euler sums. Up to an analytic conjecture, we also prove that the motivic Hoffman star basis $ζ^{\star…
For any integer $q\geq 2$ we provide a formula to express indefinite sums of a sequence $(f(n))_{n\geq 0}$ weighted by $q$-periodic sequences in terms of indefinite sums of sequences $(f(qn+p))_{n\geq 0}$, where $p\in\{0,\ldots,q-1\}$. When explicit expressions for the latter sums are available, this formula immediately provides explicit expressions for the former sums. We also illustrate this formula through some examples.
Let $e \geq 2$ be an integer, $p^r$ be a prime power with $p^r \equiv 1\ ({\rm mod}\ e)$ and $η_r(i)$ be Gaussian periods of degree $e$ for ${\mathbb F}_{p^r}$. By the dual form of Davenport and Hasse's lifting theorem on Gauss sums, we establish lifts of the multiplication matrices of the Gaussian periods $η_r(0),\ldots,η_r(e-1)$ which are defined by F. Thaine. We also give some examples of the explicit lifts for prime degree $e$ with $3\leq e\leq 23$ which also illustrate relations among lifts of Jacobi sums, Gaussian periods and multiplication matrices of Gaussian periods.
Ramanujan sums are exponential sums with exponent defined over the irreducible fractions. Until now, they have been used to provide converging expansions to some arithmetical functions appearing in the context of number theory. In this paper, we provide an application of Ramanujan sum expansions to periodic, quasiperiodic and complex time series, as a vital alternative to the Fourier transform. The Ramanujan-Fourier spectrum of the Dow Jones index over 13 years and of the coronal index of solar activity over 69 years are taken as illustrative examples. Distinct long periods may be discriminate…
Series acceleration formulas are obtained for Dirichlet series with periodic coefficients. Special cases include Ramanujan's formula for the values of the Riemann zeta function at the odd positive integers exceeding two, and related formulas for values of Dirichlet L-series and the Lerch zeta function. Such formulas have been made famous by Lerch, Ramanujan, Grosswald, Berndt, and others. The approach herein is based on the partial fraction expansion of the hyperbolic cotangent, and as such is somewhat more elementary than previous approaches, yet is quite general.
We investigate the points of constancy in the piecewise constant solution profiles of the periodic linearized Korteweg--deVries equation with step function initial data at rational times. The solution formulas are given by certain Weyl sums, and we employ number theoretic techniques, including Kummer sums, in our analysis. These results constitute an initial attempt to understand the phenomenon of "fractalization" observed at irrational times.
In this article we extend a theorem of Andrews, Crippa, and Simon on the asymptotic behavior of polynomials defined by a general class of recursive equations. Here the polynomials are in the variable $q$, and the recursive definition at step $n$ introduces a polynomial in $n$. Our extension replaces the polynomial in $n$ with either an exponential or periodic function of $n$.
Zeros of two-dimensional sums of the Epstein zeta type over rectangular lattices of the type investigated by Hejhal and Bombieri in 1987 are considered, and in particular a sum first studied by Potter and Titchmarsh in 1935. These latter proved several properties of the zeros of sums over the rectangular lattice, and commented on the fact that a particular sum had zeros off the critical line. The behaviour of one such zero is investigated as a function of the ratio of the periods $λ$ of the rectangular lattice, and it is shown that it evolves continuously along a trajectory which approaches th…
In 1892, Lord Rayleigh estimated the effective conductivity of rectangular arrays of disks and proved, by means of the Eisenstein summation, that the lattice sum $S_2$ is equal to $π$ for the square array. Further, it became clear that such an equality can be treated as a necessary condition of the macroscopic isotropy of composites governed by the Laplace equation. This yielded the description of two-dimensional conducting composites by the classic elliptic functions including the conditionally convergent Eisenstein series. This paper is devoted to extension of the lattice sums to double peri…
Let q>1 and m>0 be relatively prime integers. We find an explicit period $ν_m(q)$ such that for any integers n>0 and r we have $[n+ν_m(q),r]_m(a)=[n,r]_m(a) (mod q)$ whenever a is an integer with $\gcd(1-(-a)^m,q)=1$, or a=-1 (mod q), or a=1 (mod q) and 2|m, where $[n,r]_m(a)=\sum_{k=r(mod m)}\binom{n}{k}a^k$. This is a further extension of a congruence of Glaisher.
