We report on detailed investigation of the stability of localized modes in the nonlinear Schrodinger equations with a nonlinear parity-time (alias PT) symmetric potential. We are particularly focusing on the case where the spatially-dependent nonlinearity is purely imaginary. We compute the Evans function of the linear operator determining the linear stability of localized modes. Results of the Evans function analysis predict that for sufficiently small dissipation localized modes become stable when the propagation constant exceeds certain threshold value. This is the case for periodic and $\tanh$-shaped complex potentials where the modes having widths comparable with or smaller than the characteristic width of the complex potential are stable, while broad modes are unstable. In contrast, in complex potentials that change linearly with transverse coordinate all modes are stable, what suggests that the relation between width of the modes and spatial size of the complex potential define the stability in the general case. These results were confirmed using the direct propagation of the solutions for the mentioned examples.
Using canonical transformations we obtain localized (in space) exact solutions of the nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLSE) with space and time modulated nonlinearity and in the presence of an external potential depending on space and time. In particular we obtain exact solutions of NLSE in the presence of a number of non Hermitian $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetric external potentials.
We study the emergence of dissipative localized states in phase mismatched singly resonant optical parametric oscillators. These states arise in two different bistable configurations due to the locking of fronts waves connecting the two coexisting states. In one of these configurations the bistabiity is mediated by the coexistence of two uniform states. Here the localized states are organized in a collapsed snaking bifurcation structure. Moreover, these states undergo oscillatory instabilities which lead to a breathing behavior. When the the bistability is related with the coexistence of an un…
We report the existence and properties of localized modes described by nonlinear Schroedinger equation with complex PT-symmetric Rosen-Morse potential well. Exact analytical expressions of the localized modes are found in both one dimensional and two-dimensional geometry with self-focusing and self-defocusing Kerr nonlinearity. Linear stability analysis reveals that these localized modes are unstable for all real values of the potential parameters although corresponding linear Schroedinger eigenvalue problem possesses unbroken PT-symmetry. This result has been verified by the direct numerical …
We address the existence and stability of localized modes in the two-dimensional (2D) linear Schroedinger lattice with two symmetric nonlinear sites embedded into it, and a generalization for moderately localized nonlinearity featuring two distinct symmetric maxima. The latter setting admits a much greater variety of localized modes. Symmetric, antisymmetric, and asymmetric discrete solitons are found, and a subcritical bifurcation, accounting for the spontaneous symmetry breaking (SSB) of the symmetric modes and transition to asymmetric ones, is identified. Existence and stability of more com…
The existence and stability of the nonlinear spatial localized modes are investigated in parity-time symmetric optical media characterized by a generic complex hyperbolic refractive index distribution with competing gain and loss profile. The exact analytical expressions of the localized modes are found for all values of the competing parameter and in the presence of both the self-focusing and self-defocusing Kerr nonlinearity. The effect of competing gain/loss profile on the stability structure of these localized modes are discussed with the help of linear stability analysis followed by the d…
We discover that a spatially localized gain supports stable vortex solitons in media with cubic nonlinearity and two-photon absorption. The interplay between nonlinear losses and gain in amplifying rings results in suppression of otherwise ubiquitous azimuthal modulation instabilities of radially symmetric vortex solitons. We uncover that the topology of the gain profile imposes restrictions on the maximal possible charge of vortex solitons. Symmetry breaking occurs at high gain levels resulting in the formation of necklace vortex solitons composed of asymmetric bright spots.
Localized coherent structures can form in externally-driven dispersive optical cavities with a Kerr-type nonlinearity. Such systems are described by the Lugiato-Lefever equation, which supports a large variety of dynamical solutions. Here, we review our current knowledge on the formation, stability and bifurcation structure of localized structures in the one-dimensional Lugiato-Lefever equation. We do so by focusing on two main regimes of operation: anomalous and normal second-order dispersion. In the anomalous regime, localized patterns are organized in a homoclinic snaking scenario, which is…
Nonlinear wave propagation in parity-time ($\mathcal{PT}$) symmetric localized potentials is investigated analytically near a phase-transition point where a pair of real eigenvalues of the potential coalesce and bifurcate into the complex plane. Necessary conditions for phase transition to occur are derived based on a generalization of the Krein signature. Using multi-scale perturbation analysis, a reduced nonlinear ODE model is derived for the amplitude of localized solutions near phase transition. Above phase transition, this ODE model predicts a family of stable solitons not bifurcating fro…
We study a new quintic discrete nonlinear Schrödinger (QDNLS) equation which reduces naturally to an interesting symmetric difference equation of the form $ϕ_{n+1}+ϕ_{n-1}=F(ϕ_n)$. Integrability of the symmetric mapping is checked by singularity confinement criteria and growth properties. Some new exact localized solutions for integrable cases are presented for certain sets of parameters. Although these exact localized solutions represent only a small subset of the large variety of possible solutions admitted by the QDNLS equation, those solutions presented here are the first example of exact …
We study collisions of moving nonlinear-Schrödinger solitons with a $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric dipole embedded into the one-dimensional self-focusing or defocusing medium. Accurate analytical results are produced for bright solitons, and, in a more qualitative form, for dark ones. In the former case, an essential aspect of the approximation is that it must take into regard the intrinsic chirp of the soliton, thus going beyond the framework of the simplest quasi-particle description of the soliton's dynamics. Critical velocities separating reflection and transmission of the incident bright solito…
We study the existence and stability of solitons in the quadratic nonlinear media with spatially localized ${\cal PT}$-symmetric modulation of the linear refractive index. Families of stable one and two hump solitons are found. The properties of nonlinear modes bifurcating from a linear limit of small fundamental harmonic field are investigated. It is shown that the fundamental branch, bifurcating from the linear mode of the fundamental harmonic is limited in power. The power maximum decreases with the strength of the imaginary part of the refractive index. The modes bifurcating from the linea…
We present a variety of dissipative solitons and breathing modes in a medium with localized gain and homogeneous linear dissipation. The system posses a number of unusual properties, like exponentially localized modes in both focusing and defocusing media, the existence of modes in focusing media at negative propagation constant values, the simultaneous existence of stable symmetric and anti-symmetric localized modes when the gain landscape possesses two local maxima, as well as the existence of stable breathing solutions.
Localized wave fronts are a fundamental feature of biological systems from cell biology to ecology. Here, we study a broad class of bistable models subject to self-activation, degradation and spatially inhomogeneous activating agents. We determine the conditions under which wave-front localization is possible and analyze the stability thereof with respect to extrinsic perturbations and internal noise. It is found that stability is enhanced upon regulating a positional signal and, surprisingly, also for a low degree of binding cooperativity. We further show a contrasting impact of self-activati…
Existence of localized modes supported by the PT-symmetric nonlinear lattices is reported. The system considered reveals unusual properties: unlike other typical dissipative systems it possesses families (branches) of solutions, which can be parametrized by the propagation constant; relatively narrow localized modes appear to be stable, even when the conservative nonlinear lattice potential is absent; finally, the system supports stable multipole solutions.
In this paper, we study theoretically the emergence of localized states of vegetation close to the onset of desertification. These states are formed through the locking of vegetation fronts, connecting a uniform vegetation state with a bare soil state, which occurs nearby the Maxwell point of the system. To study these structures we consider a universal model of vegetation dynamics in drylands, which has been obtained as the normal form for different vegetation models. Close to the Maxwell point localized gaps and spots of vegetation exist and undergo collapsed snaking. The presence of gaps st…
We support and generalize a weak selection rule predicted recently for the self-similar asymptotics of the distribution function (DF) in the zero-volume-fraction limit of Ostwald ripening (OR). An asymptotic perturbation theory is developed that, when combined with an exact invariance property of the system, yields the selection rule, predicts a power-law convergence towards the selected self-similar DF and agrees well with our numerical simulations for the interface- and diffusion-controlled OR.
We address the issue of nonlinear modes in a two-dimensional waveguide array, spatially distributed in the Lieb lattice geometry, and modeled by a saturable nonlinear Schrödinger equation. In particular, we analyze the existence and stability of vortex-type solutions finding localized patterns with symmetric and asymmetric profiles, ranging from topological charge S=1 to S=3. By taking into account the presence of anisotropy, which is inherent to experimental realization of waveguide arrays, we identify different stability behaviors according to their topological charge. Our findings might giv…
We demonstrate the existence and stability of bright vortex solitons sustained by a ring-shaped parametric gain, for both focusing and defocusing Kerr nonlinearities in lossy optical media. With the defocusing nonlinearity, the vortices are stable at all values of the detuning parameter, while under the focusing nonlinearity their stability region is limited to some positive values of the detuning. Unstable vortices in the focusing medium transform into stable rotating azimuthons.
We consider a bulk-membrane-coupled partial differential equation in which a single diffusion equation posed within the unit ball is coupled to a two-component reaction diffusion equation posed on the bounding unit sphere through a linear Robin boundary condition. Specifically, within the bulk we consider a process of linear diffusion with point-source generation for a bulk-bound activator. On the bounding surface we consider the classical two-component Brusselator model where the feed term is replaced by the restriction of the bulk-bound activator to the membrane. By considering the singularl…
We construct families of symmetric, antisymmetric, and asymmetric solitary modes in one-dimensional bichromatic lattices with the second-harmonic-generating ($χ^{(2)}$) nonlinearity concentrated at a pair of sites placed at distance $l$. The lattice can be built as an array of optical waveguides. Solutions are obtained in an implicit analytical form, which is made explicit in the case of adjacent nonlinear sites, $l=1$. The stability is analyzed through the computation of eigenvalues for small perturbations, and verified by direct simulations. In the cascading limit, which corresponds to large…
We consider the Hamiltonian version of a $\cal PT$-symmetric lattice that describes dynamics of coupled pendula under a resonant periodic force. Using the asymptotic limit of a weak coupling between the pendula, we prove the nonlinear long-time stability of breathers (time-periodic solutions localized in the lattice) by using the Lyapunov method. Breathers are saddle points of the extended energy function, which are located between the continuous bands of positive and negative energy. Nevertheless, we construct an approximate Lyapunov function and estimate its evolution on a long but finite ti…
We report a new type of symmetry-breaking bifurcation of solitons in optical systems with parity-time-symmetric potentials. In this bifurcation, the two bifurcated branches of asymmetric solitons exhibit opposite stability, which contrasts all previous symmetry-breaking bifurcations in conservative and non-conservative systems. We show that this novel symmetry-breaking bifurcation can be exploited to achieve unidirectional propagation of high-intensity light beams in parity-time-symmetric potentials.
We consider the formation of temporal localized structures or Kerr comb generation in a microresonator with inhomogeneities. We show that the introduction of even a small inhomogeneity in the injected beam widens the stability region of localized solutions. The homoclinic snaking bifurcation associated with the formation of localized structures and clusters of them with decaying oscillatory tails is constructed. Furthermore, the inhomogeneity allows not only to control the position of localized solutions, but strongly affects their stability domains. In particular, a new stability domain of a …
We report localized nonlinear modes of the self-focusing and defocusing nonlocal nonlinear Schroedinger equation with the generalized PT-symmetric Scarf-II, Rosen-Morse, and periodic potentials. Parameter regions are presented for broken and unbroken PT-symmetric phases of linear bounded states and the linear stability of the obtained solitons. Moreover, we numerically explore the dynamical behaviors of solitons and find stable solitons for some given parameters.
Multi-peaked localized stationary solutions of the discrete nonlinear Schrodinger (DNLS) equation are presented in one (1D) and two (2D) dimensions. These are excited states of the discrete spectrum and correspond to multi-breather solutions. A simple, very fast, and efficient numerical method, suggested by Aubry, has been used for their calculation. The method involves no diagonalization, but just iterations of a map, starting from trivial solutions of the anti-continuous limit. Approximate analytical expressions are presented and compared with the numerical results. The linear stability of t…
Families of analytical solutions are found for symmetric and antisymmetric solitons in the dual-core system with the Kerr nonlinearity and PT-balanced gain and loss. The crucial issue is stability of the solitons. A stability region is obtained in an analytical form, and verified by simulations, for the PT-symmetric solitons. For the antisymmetric ones, the stability border is found in a numerical form. Moving solitons of both types collide elastically. The two soliton species merge into one in the "supersymmetric" case, with equal coefficients of the gain, loss and inter-core coupling. These …
It has been recently uncovered that coherent structures in microresonators such as cavity solitons and patterns are intimately related to Kerr frequency combs. In this work, we present a general analysis of the regions of existence and stability of cavity solitons and patterns in the Lugiato-Lefever equation, a mean-field model that finds applications in many different nonlinear optical cavities. We demonstrate that the rich dynamics and coexistence of multiple solutions in the Lugiato-Lefever equation are of key importance to understanding frequency comb generation. A detailed map of how and …
We address the existence and stability of spatial localized modes supported by a parity-time-symmetric complex potential in the presence of power-law nonlinearity. The analytical expressions of the localized modes, which are Gaussian in nature, are obtained in both (1+1) and (2+1) dimensions. A linear stability analysis corroborated by the direct numerical simulations reveals that these analytical localized modes can propagate stably for a wide range of the potential parameters and for various order nonlinearities. Some dynamical characteristics of these solutions, such as the power and the tr…
We study the effects produced by competition of two physical mechanisms of energy localization in inhomogeneous nonlinear systems. As an example, we analyze spatially localized modes supported by a nonlinear impurity in the generalized nonlinear Schrödinger equation and describe three types of nonlinear impurity modes --- one- and two-hump symmetric localized modes and asymmetric localized modes --- for both focusing and defocusing nonlinearity and two different (attractive or repulsive) types of impurity. We obtain an analytical stability criterion for the nonlinear localized modes and consid…
We theoretically investigate the dynamics, bifurcation structure and stability of quadratic dark localized dissipative states arising in cavity enhanced second-harmonic generation. These states, formed through the locking of plane front waves, undergo collapsed homoclinic snaking and may exhibit oscillatory dynamics.
Stability of soliton families in one-dimensional nonlinear Schroedinger equations with non-parity-time (PT)-symmetric complex potentials is investigated numerically. It is shown that these solitons can be linearly stable in a wide range of parameter values both below and above phase transition. In addition, a pseudo-Hamiltonian-Hopf bifurcation is revealed, where pairs of purely-imaginary eigenvalues in the linear-stability spectra of solitons collide and bifurcate off the imaginary axis, creating oscillatory instability, which resembles Hamiltonian-Hopf bifurcations of solitons in Hamiltonian…
Localized spot patterns, where one or more solution components concentrates at certain points in the domain, are a common class of localized pattern for reaction-diffusion systems, and they arise in a wide range of modeling scenarios. In an arbitrary bounded 3-D domain, the existence, linear stability, and slow dynamics of localized multi-spot patterns is analyzed for the well-known singularly perturbed Gierer-Meinhardt (GM) activator-inhibitor system in the limit of a small activator diffusivity $\varepsilon^2\ll 1$. Our main focus is to classify the different types of multi-spot patterns, an…
We analyze the existence and stability of nonlinear localized waves in a periodic medium described by the Kronig-Penney model with a nonlinear defect. We demonstrate the existence of a novel type of stable nonlinear band-gap localized states, and also reveal an important physical mechanism of the oscillatory wave instabilities associated with the band-gap resonances.
In the present paper we investigate the influence of inhomogeneities in the dynamics and stability of DNA open states, modeled as propagating solitons in the spirit of a Generalized Yakushevish Model. It is a direct consecuence of our model that there exists a critical distance between the soliton's center of mass and the inhomogeneity at which the interaction between them can change the stability of the open state.Furtherly from this results was derived a renormalized potential funtion.
A nonlinear Schrodinger equation arising from light propagation down an inhomogeneous medium is considered. The inhomogeneity is reflected through a non-uniform coefficient of the non-linear term in the equation. In particular, a combination of self-focusing and self-defocusing nonlinearity, with the self-defocusing region localized in a finite interval, is investigated. Using numerical computations, the extension of linear eigenmodes of the corresponding linearized system into nonlinear states is established, particularly nonlinear continuations of the fundamental state and the first excited …
We demonstrate the existence of localized oscillatory breathers for quasi-one-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensates confined in periodic potentials. The breathing behavior corresponds to position-oscillations of individual condensates about the minima of the potential lattice. We deduce the structural stability of the localized oscillations from the construction. The stability is confirmed numerically for perturbations to the initial state of the condensate, to the potential trap, as well as for external noise. We also construct periodic and chaotic extended oscillations for the chain of conde…
Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) exhibits a variety of fascinating and unexpected macroscopic phenomena, and has attracted sustained attention in recent years--particularly in the field of solitons and associated nonlinear phenomena. Meanwhile, optical lattices have emerged as a versatile toolbox for understanding the properties and controlling the dynamics of BEC, among which the realization of bright gap solitons is an iconic result. However, the dark gap solitons are still experimentally unproven, and their properties in more than one dimension remain unknown. In light of this, we describe, n…
The linear stability of steady-state periodic patterns of localized spots in $\R^2$ for the two-component Gierer-Meinhardt (GM) and Schnakenburg reaction-diffusion models is analyzed in the semi-strong interaction limit corresponding to an asymptotically small diffusion coefficient $\eps^2$ of the activator concentration. In the limit $\eps\to 0$, localized spots in the activator are centered at the lattice points of a Bravais lattice with constant area $|Ω|$. To leading order in $ν={-1/\log\eps}$, the linearization of the steady-state periodic spot pattern has a zero eigenvalue when the inhib…
Motivated by recent developments in the realm of matter waves, we explore the potential of creating solitary waves on the surface of a torus. This is an intriguing perspective due to the role of curvature in the shape and dynamics of the coherent structures. We find different families of bright solitary waves for attractive nonlinearities including ones localized in both angular directions, as well as waves localized in one direction and homogeneous in the other. The waves localized in both angular directions have also been partitioned into two types: those whose magnitude decays to zero and t…
We consider linearly coupled discrete nonlinear Schrödinger equations with gain and loss terms and with a cubic-quintic nonlinearity. The system models a parity-time ($\cal{PT}$)-symmetric coupler composed by a chain of dimers. Particularly we study site-centered and bond-centered spatially-localized solutions and present that each solution has a symmetric and antisymmetric configuration between the arms. When a parameter is varied, the resulting bifurcation diagrams for the existence of standing localized solutions have a snaking behaviour. The critical gain/loss coefficient above which the $…
It is known that multidimensional complex potentials obeying $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetry may possess all real spectra and continuous families of solitons. Recently it was shown that for multi-dimensional systems these features can persist when the parity symmetry condition is relaxed so that the potential is invariant under reflection in only a single spatial direction. We examine the existence, stability and dynamical properties of localized modes within the cubic nonlinear Schrödinger equation in such a scenario of partially $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric potential.
The resonant scattering of gap solitons (GS) of the periodic nonlinear Schrödinger equation with a localized defect which is symmetric under the parity and the time-reversal (PT) symmetry, is investigated. It is shown that for suitable amplitudes ratios of the real and imaginary parts of the defect potential the resonant transmission of the GS through the defect becomes possible. The resonances occur for potential parameters which allow the existence of localized defect modes with the same energy and norm of the incoming GS. Scattering properties of GSs of different band-gaps with effective ma…
Vortices symmetric with respect to simultaneous parity and time reversing transformations are considered on the square lattice in the framework of the discrete nonlinear Schrödinger equation. The existence and stability of vortex configurations is analyzed in the limit of weak coupling between the lattice sites, when predictions on the elementary cell of a square lattice (i.e., a single square) can be extended to a large (yet finite) array of lattice cells. Our analytical predictions are found to be in good agreement with numerical computations.
We revisit the nonlinear stability of the critical invasion front in the Ginzburg-Landau equation. Our main result shows that the amplitude of localized perturbations decays with rate $t^{-3/2}$, while the phase decays diffusively. We thereby refine earlier work of Bricmont and Kupiainen as well as Eckmann and Wayne, who separately established nonlinear stability but with slower decay rates. On a technical level, we rely on sharp linear estimates obtained through analysis of the resolvent near the essential spectrum via a far-field/core decomposition which is well suited to accurately describi…
