By Molecular Dynamics simulation of a coarse-grained bead-spring type model for a cylindrical molecular brush with a backbone chain of $N_b$ effective monomers to which with grafting density $σ$ side chains with $N$ effective monomers are tethered, several characteristic length scales are studied for variable solvent quality. Side chain lengths are in the range $5 \le N \le 40$, backbone chain lengths are in the range $50 \le N_b \le 200$, and we perform a comparison to results for the bond fluctuation model on the simple cubic lattice (for which much longer chains are accessible, $N_b \le 1027$, and which corresponds to an athermal, very good, solvent). We obtain linear dimensions of side chains and the backbone chain and discuss their $N$-dependence in terms of power laws and the associated effective exponents. We show that even at the Theta point the side chains are considerably stretched, their linear dimension depending on the solvent quality only weakly. Effective persistence lengths are extracted both from the orientational correlations and from the backbone end-to-end distance; it is shown that different measures of the persistence length (which would all agree for Gaussian chains) are not mutually consistent with each other, and depend distinctly both on $N_b$ and the solvent quality. A brief discussion of pertinent experiments is given.
Polymer brushes normally swell in a good solvent and collapse in a poor solvent. An abnormal response of polymer brushes, so-called co-nonsolvency, is the phenomenon where the brush counter-intuitively collapses in a good solvent mixture. In this work, we employed molecular dynamics simulations to investigate the structural properties of the grafted polymers on the occurrence of co-nonsolvency. Brushes with various grafting densities were considered to study the effect of topological excluded volumes on the co-nonsolvency. We found that the brush height follows a novel scaling behavior of the …
We study self-assembly of a binary mixture of components A and B confined in a slit-like pore with the walls modified by the stripes of tethered brushes made of beads of a sort A. The emphasis is on solvent mediated transitions between morphologies when the composition of the mixture varies. For certain limiting cases of the pore geometry we found that an effective reduction of the dimensionality may lead to a quasi one- and two-dimensional demixing. The change of the environment for the chains upon changing the composition of the mixture from polymer melt to a good solvent conditions provides…
We report a simulation study for bottle-brush polymers grafted on a rigid backbone. Using a standard coarse-grained bead-spring model extensive molecular dynamics simulations for such macromolecules under good solvent conditions are performed. We consider a broad range of parameters and present numerical results for the monomer density profile, density of the untethered ends of the grafted flexible backbones and the correlation function describing the range that neighboring grafted bottle-brushes are affected by the presence of the others due to the excluded volume interactions. The end beads …
We study the Brownian dynamics of flexible and semiflexible polymer chains densely grafted on a flat substrate, upon rapid quenching of the system when the quality of solvent becomes poor and chains attempt collapse into a globular state. The collapse process of such a polymer brush differs from individual chains, both in its kinetics and its structural morphology. We find that the resulting collapsed brush does not form a homogeneous dense layer, in spite of all chain monomers equally attracting each other via a model Lennard-Jones potential. Instead, a very distinct inhomogeneous density dis…
The stretching of brushes of long polymers grafted to a planar surface is investigated byMonte Carlo simulations in the limit of very high grafting densities, as achieved in recent experiments. The monomer density profiles are shown to deviate considerably from the parabolic limiting form predicted by self-consistent field theory. A rapid transition is observed from parabolic to fully stretched polymers, characterized by a dramatic change in the end-monomer height distribution and by a clear cross-over in the slope of the brush height versus scaled grafting density.
The phase behaviour of two-component bottle-brush polymers with fully flexible backbones under poor solvent conditions is studied via molecular-dynamics simulations, using a coarse-grained bead-spring model and side chains of up to $N=40$ effective monomers. We consider a symmetric model where side chains of type A and B are grafted alternately onto a flexible backbone. The aim of this study to explore the phase behaviour of two-component bottle-brushes depending on parameters, such as as the grafting density $σ$, the backbone length $N_b$, the side-chain length $N$, and the temperature $T$. B…
Conformations of a single-component bottle-brush polymer with a fully flexible backbone under poor solvent conditions are studied by molecular-dynamics simulations, using a coarse-grained bead-spring model with side chains of up to N=40 effective monomers. By variation of the solvent quality and the grafting density $σ$ with which side chains are grafted onto the flexible backbone, we study for backbone lengths of up to $N_b=100$ the crossover from the brush/coil regime to the dense collapsed state. At lower temperatures, where collapsed chains with a constant monomer density are observed, the…
We undertake the investigation of sheared polymer chains grafted on flat surfaces to model liposomes covered with polyethylene glycol brushes as a case study for the mechanisms of efficient drug delivery in biologically relevant situations, for example, as carriers for topical treatments of illnesses in the human vasculature. For these applications, specific rheological properties are required, such as low viscosity at high shear rate to improve the transport of the liposomes. Therefore non - equilibrium, DPD simulations of polymer brushes of various length and shear rates are performed to obt…
A coarse grained model for flexible polymers end-grafted to repulsive spherical nanoparticles is studied for various chain lengths and grafting densities under good solvent conditions, by Molecular Dynamics methods and density functional theory. With increasing chain length the monomer density profile exhibits a crossover to the star polymer limit. The distribution of polymer ends and the linear dimensions of individual polymer chains are obtained, while the inhomogeneous stretching of the chains is characterized by the local persistence lengths. The results on the structure factor of both sin…
I consider the ordering of dilute platelet additives when incorporated into an end-grafted polymer brush. The competition between wetting interactions and the anisotropic stress environment of the interior of the brush causes these platelet additives to either remain suspended at the outer edge of the brush laying flat against the brush surface (as bits of confetti at rest on the ground), or to invade the interior of the brush in which case the platelets stand end-on and in some cases protrude above the outer edge of the brush. The orientation of the additives is controlled by the ratio of the…
Non equilibrium coarse grained, dissipative particle dynamics simulations of complex fluids, made up of polymer brushes tethered to planar surfaces immersed in a solvent yield non monotonic behavior of the friction coefficient as a function of the polymer grating density on the substrates, Γ, while the viscosity shows a monotonically increasing dependence on Γ. This effect is shown to be independent of the degree of polymerization, N, and the size of the system. It arises from the composition and the structure of the first particle layer adjacent to each surface that results from the confineme…
Ordering nanoparticles into a desired super-structure is often crucial for their technological applications. We use molecular dynamics simulations to study the assembly of nanoparticles in a polymer brush randomly grafted to a planar surface as the solvent evaporates. Initially, the nanoparticles are dispersed in a solvent that wets the polymer brush. After the solvent evaporates, the nanoparticles are either inside the brush or adsorbed at the surface of the brush, depending on the strength of the nanoparticle-polymer interaction. For strong nanoparticle-polymer interactions, a 2-dimensional …

Large scale Monte Carlo simulations of dense layers of grafted polymer chains in good solvent conditions are used to explore the relaxation of a polymer brush. Monomer displacements are analyzed for the directions parallel and perpendicular to the grafting plane. Auto-correlation functions of individual segments or chain sections are monitored as function of time. We demonstrate that the terminal relaxation time $τ$ of grafted layers well in the brush regime grows exponentially with degree of polymerization $N$ of the chains, $τ\propto N^{3}\exp(N/N_{e})$, with $N_{e}$ the entanglement degree …
Using molecular simulations, we study the properties of a polymer brush in contact with an explicit solvent under Couette and Poiseuille flow. The solvent is comprised of chemically identical chains. We present evidence that individual, unentangled chains in the dense brush exhibit cyclic, tumbling motion and non-Gaussian fluctuations of the molecular orientations similar to the behaviour of isolated tethered chains in shear flow. The collective molecular motion gives rise to an inversion of hydrodynamic flow direction in the vicinity of the brush-coated surface. Utilising Couette and Poiseuil…
Scaling predictions and results from self-consistent field calculations for bottle-brush polymers with a rigid backbone and flexible side chains under good solvent conditions are summarized and their validity and applicability is assessed by a comparison with Monte Carlo simulations of a simple lattice model. It is shown that under typical conditions, as they are also present in experiments, only a rather weak stretching of the side chains is realized, and then the scaling predictions based on the extension of the Daoud-Cotton blob picture are not applicable. Also two-component bottle brush po…
We investigate asymptotic properties of long polymers grafted to convex cylindrical and spherical surfaces, and, in particular, distribution of chain free ends. The parabolic potential profile, predicted for flat and concave brushes, fails in convex brushes, and chain free ends span only a finite fraction of the brush thickness. In this paper, we extend the self-consistent model developed by Ball, Marko, Milner and Witten to determine the size of the exclusion zone, i.e. size of the region of the brush free from chain ends. We show that in the limit of strong stretching, the brush can be descr…
Bottle brushes are polymeric macromolecules made of a linear polymeric backbone grafted with side chains. The choice of the grafting density σg, the length ns the grafted side chains and their chemical nature fully determines the properties of each macromolecule, such as its elasticity and its folding behaviour. Typically, experimental bottle brushes are systems made of tens of thousands of monomeric units, rendering a computational approach extremely expensive, especially in the case of bottle brush solutions. A proper coarse graining description of these macromolecules thus appears essential…
Extensive Monte Carlo results are presented for a lattice model of a bottle-brush polymer under good solvent or Theta solvent conditions. Varying the side chain length, backbone length, and the grafting density for a rigid straight backbone, both radial density profiles of monomers and side chain ends are obtained, as well as structure factors describing the scattering from a single side chain and from the total bottle-brush polymer. To describe the structure in the interior of a very long bottle-brush, a periodic boundary condition in the direction along the backbone is used, and to describe …
TiO2 nanoparticles (NPs) are attracting materials for biomedical applications, provided that they are coated with polymers to improve solubility, dispersion and biocompatibility. Conformation, coverage density and solvent effects largely influence their functionality and stability. In this work, we use atomistic molecular dynamics simulations to study polyethylene glycol (PEG) grafting to highly curved TiO2 NPs (2-3 nm) in different solvents. We compare the coating polymer conformations on NPs with those on (101) flat surfaces. In water, the transition from mushroom to brush conformation start…
The quality of solvents of polymers is often described in terms of the Flory chi parameter typically assumed to depend only on the temperature, T. In certain polymer-solvent systems fitting the experimental data enforces the replacement of chi(T) by a concentration dependent chieff. In turn, this modifies the swelling and collapse behavior. These effects are studied, in the framework of a mean-field theory, for isolated coils and for planar brushes. The phi dependence of chieff gives rise to three main consequences: (i) Shift in the cross-over between Gaussian and self-avoidance regimes; (ii) …
Due to the complex characteristics of bottle-brush polymers, it became a challenge to develop an efficient algorithm for studying such macromolecules under various solvent conditions or some constraints in the space by using computer simulations. In the limit of a bottle-brush polymer with a rather stiff backbone (straight rigid backbone), we generalize the variant of the biased chain growth algorithm, the pruned-enriched Rosenbluth method, for simulating polymers with complex architecture, from star polymers to bottle-brush polymers, on the simple cubic lattice. With the high statistics of ou…
The structure of flexible polymers endgrafted in cylindrical pores of diameter D is studied as a function of chain length N and grafting density σ, assuming good solvent conditions. A phenomenological scaling theory, describing the variation of the linear dimensions of the chains with σ, is developed and tested by Molecular Dynamics simulations of a bead-spring model.
Polymer brushes can grow on almost any solid surface, and by design, exhibit diverse properties and functionalities, thus they have been widely used in many emerging applications in engineering, energy, and medicine. In particular, some applications such as actuation, molecule release, and friction switch require the polymer brushes to change their heights between dry and wet states, and maximizing such height change is critical for the optimal performance of these applications. While scaling laws have long been proposed to qualitatively determine brush heights, a theory that can quantitativel…
Understanding the effect of inhomogeneity on the charge regulation and dielectric properties, and how it depends on the conformational characteristics of the macromolecules is a long-standing problem. In order to address this problem, we have developed a field-theory to study charge regulation and local dielectric function in planar polyelectrolyte brushes. The theory is used to study a polyacid brush, which is comprised of chains end-grafted at the solid-fluid interface, in equilibrium with a bulk solution containing monovalent salt ions, solvent molecules and pH controlling acid. In particul…
A lattice model for a symmetrical copolymer "bottle brush" molecule, where two types (A,B) of flexible side chains are grafted with one chain end to a rigid backbone, is studied by a variant of the pruned-enriched Rosenbluth method (PERM), allowing for simultaneous growth of all side chains in the Monte Carlo sampling. Choosing repulsive binary interactions between unlike monomers and varying the solvent quality, it is found that phase separation into an $A$-rich part of the cylindrical molecule and a $B$-rich part can occur only locally. Long range order (in the direction of the backbone) doe…
Neutral or charged polymers that are densely end-grafted to surfaces form brush-like structures and are highly stretched under good-solvent conditions. We discuss and compare relevant results from scaling models, self-consistent-field methods and MD simulation techniques and concentrate on the conceptual simple case of planar substrates. For neutral polymers the main quantity of interest is the brush height and the polymer density profile, which can be well predicted from self-consistent calculations and simulations. Charged polymers (polyelectrolytes) are of practical importance since they ar…
As an example for the interplay of structure, dynamics, and phase behavior of macromolecular systems, this article focuses on the problem of bottle-brush polymers with either rigid or flexible backbones. On a polymer with chain length $N_b$, side-chains with chain length $N$ are endgrafted with grafting density $σ$. Due to the multitude of characteristic length scales and the size of these polymers (typically these cylindrical macromolecules contain of the order of 10000 effective monomeric units) understanding of the structure is a challenge for experiment. But due to excessively large relaxa…
Obtaining reliable estimates of the statistical properties of complex macromolecules by computer simulation is a task that requires high computational effort as well as the development of highly efficient simulation algorithms. We present here an algorithm combining local moves, the pivot algorithm, and an adjustable simulation lattice box for simulating dilute systems of bottle-brush polymers with a flexible backbone and flexible side chains under good solvent conditions. Applying this algorithm to the bond fluctuation model, very precise estimates of the mean square end-to-end distances and …
The scission kinetics of bottle-brush molecules in solution and on an adhesive substrate is modeled by means of Molecular Dynamics simulation with Langevin thermostat. Our macromolecules comprise a long flexible polymer backbone with $L$ segments, consisting of breakable bonds, along with two side chains of length $N$, tethered to each segment of the backbone. In agreement with recent experiments and theoretical predictions, we find that bond cleavage is significantly enhanced on a strongly attractive substrate even though the chemical nature of the bonds remains thereby unchanged. We find tha…
We investigate the effect of counterion fluctuations in a single polyelectrolyte brush in the absence of added salt by systematically expanding the counterion free energy about Poisson-Boltzmann mean field theory. We find that for strongly charged brushes, there is a collapse regime in which the brush height decreases with increasing charge on the polyelectrolyte chains. The transition to this collapsed regime is similar to the liquid-gas transition, which has a first-order line terminating at a critical point. We find that for monovalent counterions the transition is discontinuous in theta so…
When two types of side chains (A,B) are densely grafted to a (stiff) backbone and the resulting bottle-brush polymer is in a solution under poor solvent conditions, an incompatibility between A and B leads to microphase separation in the resulting cylindrical brush. The possible types of ordering are reminiscent of the ordering of block copolymers in cylindrical confinement. Starting from this analogy, Leibler's theory of microphase separation in block copolymer melts is generalized to derive a description of the system in the weak segregation limit. Also molecular dynamics simulation results …
The adsorption of a bottle-brush polymer end-grafted with one chain end of its backbone to a flat substrate surface is studied by Monte Carlo simulation of a coarse-grained model, that previously has been characterized in the bulk, assuming a dilute solution under good solvent conditions. Applying the bond fluctuation model on the simple cubic lattice, we vary the backbone chain length $N_b$ from $N_b=67$ to $N_b = 259$ effective monomeric units, the side chain length $N$ from N=6 to N=48, and the grafting density $σ=1$, i.e., parameters that correspond well to the experimentally accessible ra…
A comparative dynamic Monte Carlo simulation study of polydisperse living polymer brushes, created by surface initiated living polymerization, and conventional polymer monodisperse brush, comprising linear polymer chains, grafted to a planar substrate under good solvent conditions, is presented. The living brush is created by end-monomer (de)polymerization reaction after placing an array of initiators on a grafting plane in contact with a solution of initially non-bonded segments (monomers). At equilibrium, the monomer density profile ϕ(z) of the LPB is found to decline as ϕ(z) ~ z^{-α} with t…
We study polymer layers formed by irreversible adsorption from a polymer melt. Our theory describes an experiment which is a ``slow'' version of that proposed by Guiselin [Europhys. Lett., v. 17 (1992) p. 225] who considered instantaneously irreversibly adsorbing chains and predicted a universal density profile of the layer after swelling with solvent to produce the ``Guiselin brush.'' Here we ask what happens when adsorption is not instantaneous. The classic example is chemisorption. In this case the brush is formed slowly and the final structure depends on the experiment's duration, $t_{fina…
The self- and mutual-avoiding walk used in conventional lattice models for polymeric systems requires that all lattice sites, polymer segments, and solvent molecules (unoccupied lattice sites) have the same volume. This incorrectly accounts for the solvent entropy (i.e., size ratio between polymer segments and solvent molecules), and also limits the coarse-graining capability of such models, where the invariant degree of polymerization controlling the system fluctuations is too small (thus exaggerating the system fluctuations) compared to that in most experiments. Here we show how to properly …
We present a Monte Carlo study of the surface anchoring of a nematic fluid on swollen layers of grafted liquid crystalline chain molecules. The liquid crystalline particles are modeled by soft repulsive ellipsoids, and the chains are made of the same particles. An appropriately modified version of the configurational bias Monte Carlo algorithm is introduced, which removes and redistributes chain bonds rather than whole monomers. With this algorithm, a wide range of grafting densities could be studied. The substrate is chosen such that it favors a planar orientation (parallel to the surface). D…
There is ample evidence that polymer brushes reduce friction between surfaces. Several industrial applications take advantage of this fact, such as those in plastic bag production, where the brushes act as slip agents; however, the complex mechanisms that give rise to such reduction of friction are not yet fully understood. In this work we report coarse grained, dissipative particle dynamics simulations carried out for surfaces functionalized with erukamide brushes, a polymer commonly used in the plastics industry as a slip agent between surfaces. We calculate their rheological properties, suc…
In the present work, we study the equilibrium conformations of linear polyelectrolytes tethered onto a spherical, oppositely charged core in equilibrium with an ionic reservoir of fixed concentration. Particular focus is placed on the situation of stretched chains, where the monomer concentration is known to display an inverse square-law decay far away from the spherical surface, which is then further extrapolated all the way down to the grafting core. While the equilibrium distributions of mobile ions are computed in the framework of a classical Density Functional Theory (cDFT) that incorpora…
The charge of a polyelectrolyte (PE) controls myriads of phenomena in biology, biotechnology, and materials science, but still remains elusive from an understanding. Considering the adsorption of counterions on an isolated PE chain, an analytical expression for the effective charge - valid for all chain flexibility, for variable salt, in good solvents at all conditions, in poor solvents in the expanded (coil) state away from the critical point, and for gels, brushes and other PE systems in their expanded state - is derived. Phase boundaries and the critical point for the I-st order collapse tr…
When the local intrinsic stiffness of a polymer chain varies over a wide range, one can observe both a crossover from rigid-rod-like behavior to (almost) Gaussian random coils and a further crossover towards self-avoiding walks in good solvents. Using the pruned-enriched Rosenbluth method (PERM) to study self-avoiding walks of up to $N_b=50000$ steps and variable flexibility, the applicability of the Kratky-Porod model is tested. Evidence for non-exponential decay of the bond-orientational correlations $<\cos θ(s) >$ for large distances $s$ along the chain contour is presented, irrespective of…

The effect of self-generated tension in the backbone of a bottle-brush (BB) macromolecule, adsorbed on an attractive surface, is studied by means of Molecular Dynamics simulations of a coarse-grained bead-spring model in the good solvent regime. The BB-molecule is modeled as a backbone chain of $L$ beads, connected by breakable bonds and with side chains, tethered pairwise to each monomer of the backbone. Our investigation is focused on several key questions that determine the bond scission mechanism and the ensuing degradation kinetics: how are frequency of bond scission and self-induced tens…
We investigate the dynamics of the collapse of a single copolymer chain, when the solvent quality is suddenly quenched from good to poor. We employ Brownian dynamics simulations of a bead-spring chain model and incorporate fluctuating hydrodynamic interactions via the Rotne-Prager-Yamakawa tensor. Various copolymer architectures are studied within the framework of a two-letter HP model, where monomers of type H (hydrophobic) attract each other, while all interactions involving P (polar or hydrophilic) monomers are purely repulsive. The hydrodynamic interactions are found to assist the collapse…
The persistence length of macromolecules is one of their basic characteristics, describing their intrinsic local stiffness. However, it is difficult to extract this length from physical properties of the polymers, different recipes may give answers that disagree with each other. Monte Carlo simulations are used to elucidate this problem, giving a comparative discussion of two lattice models, the self-avoiding walk model extended by a bond bending energy, and bottle-brush polymers described by the bond fluctuation model. The conditions are discussed under which a description of such macromolecu…
We study bottlebrush macromolecules in a good solvent by small-angle neutron scattering (SANS), static light scattering (SLS), and dynamic light scattering (DLS). These polymers consist of a linear backbone to which long side chains are chemically grafted. The backbone contains about 1600 monomer units (weight average) and every second monomer unit carries side-chains with ca. 60 monomer units. The SLS- and SANS data extrapolated to infinite dilution lead to the form factor of the polymer that can be described in terms of a worm-like chain with a contour length of 380 nm and a persistence leng…
One-dimensional flexible objects are abundant in physics, from polymers to vortex lines to defect lines and many more. These objects structure their environment and it is natural to assume that the influence these objects exert on their environment depends on the distance from the line-object. But how should this be defined? We argue here that there is an intrinsic length scale along the undulating line that is a measure of its "stiffness" (i.e., orientational persistence), which yields a natural way of defining the variation of physical properties normal to the undulating line. We exemplify h…
In this review, we describe applications of the pruned-enriched Rosenbluth method (PERM), a sequential Monte Carlo algorithm with resampling, to various problems in polymer physics. PERM produces samples according to any given prescribed weight distribution, by growing configurations step by step with controlled bias, and correcting "bad" configurations by "population control". The latter is implemented, in contrast to other population based algorithms like e.g. genetic algorithms, by depth-first recursion which avoids storing all members of the population at the same time in computer memory. …
Inspired by recent experiments on the spatial organization of bacterial chromosomes, we consider a type of "bottle brush" polymer consisting of a flexible backbone chain, to which flexible side loops are connected. We show that such a model with an open linear backbone spontaneously adopts a helical structure with a well-defined pitch when confined to small cylindrical volume. This helicity persists over a range of sizes and aspect-ratios of the cylinder, provided the packing fraction of the chain is suitably large. We analyze this results in terms of the interplay between the effective stiffn…
Chain-like macromolecules (polymers) show characteristic adsorption properties due to their flexibility and internal degrees of freedom, when attracted to surfaces and interfaces. In this review we discuss concepts and features that are relevant to the adsorption of neutral and charged polymers at equilibrium, including the type of polymer/surface interaction, the solvent quality, the characteristics of the surface, and the polymer structure. We pay special attention to the case of charged polymers (polyelectrolytes) that have a special importance due to their water solubility. We present a su…
The paper presents a short overview of the theoretical, numerical and experimental works on the critical behavior of a dilute polymer solution of long-flexible polymer chains confined in semi-infinite space restricted by a surface or in a slit geometry of two parallel walls with different adsorbing or repelling properties in respect for polymers as well as in a solution of mesoscopic spherical colloidal particles of one sort or two different sorts. We discuss the application of the massive field theory approach in a fixed space dimensions d=3 up to one loop order for such topics as:(a) the inv…
Semiflexible macromolecules in dilute solution under very good solvent conditions are modeled by self-avoiding walks on the simple cubic lattice ($d=3$ dimensions) and square lattice ($d=2$ dimensions), varying chain stiffness by an energy penalty $ε_b$ for chain bending. In the absence of excluded volume interactions, the persistence length $\ell_p$ of the polymers would then simply be $\ell_p=\ell_b(2d-2)^{-1}q_b^{-1}$ with $q_b= \exp(-ε_b/k_BT)$, the bond length $\ell_b$ being the lattice spacing, and $k_BT$ is the thermal energy. Using Monte Carlo simulations applying the pruned-enriched R…
