We investigate the characteristics of the thick disk in the Canada - France - Hawaii - Telescope Legacy Survey (CFHTLS) fields, complemented at bright magnitudes with Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) data. The ([Fe/H], Z) distributions are derived in the W1 and W3 fields, and compared with simulated maps produced using the Besançon model. It is shown that the thick disk, represented in star-count models by a distinct component, is not an adequate description of the observed ([Fe/H], Z) distributions in these fields.
We report modelling follow-up of recently-discovered gravitational-lens candidates in the Canada France Hawaii Telescope Legacy Survey. Lens modelling was done by a small group of specially-interested volunteers from the SpaceWarps citizen-science community who originally found the candidate lenses. Models are categorised according to seven diagnostics indicating (a) the image morphology and how clear or indistinct it is, (b) whether the mass map and synthetic lensed image appear to be plausible, and (c) how the lens-model mass compares with the stellar mass and the abundance-matched halo mass…
We present the results of clustering analyses of Lyman break galaxies (LBGs) at $z\sim3$, $4$, and $5$ using the final data release of the Canada--France--Hawaii Telescope Legacy Survey (CFHTLS). Deep- and wide-field images of the CFHTLS Deep Survey enable us to obtain sufficiently accurate two-point angular correlation functions to apply a halo occupation distribution analysis. Mean halo masses, calculated as $\langle M_{h} \rangle=10^{11.7}-10^{12.8}h^{-1}M_{\odot}$, increase with stellar-mass limit of LBGs. The threshold halo mass to have a central galaxy follows the same increasing trend w…
Narrow-band imaging surveys allow the study of the spectral characteristics of galaxies without the need of performing their spectroscopic follow-up. In this work, we forward-model the Physics of the Accelerating Universe Survey (PAUS) narrow-band data. The aim is to improve the constraints on the spectral coefficients used to create the galaxy spectral energy distributions (SED) of the galaxy population model in Tortorelli et al. 2020. In that work, the model parameters were inferred from the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope Legacy Survey (CFHTLS) data using Approximate Bayesian Computation (AB…
We present the results of N-body models of the Milky Way and Large Magellanic Cloud system and study the kinematic reflex motion in the stellar halo owing to the barycentre displacement of the disc. In agreement with previous studies, we find that the Milky Way disc may be moving at 40 km/s relative to the barycentre prior to the Large Magellanic Cloud infall. The resulting reflex motion is visible in tangential velocities of the stellar halo as a simple dipole. The signal is strongest for stars with long dynamical times, identifiable in position-velocity data as stars with large apocentres, w…
We study the possibility that the Milky Way's cool stellar disc includes mergers with ancient stars. Galaxies are understood to form in a hierarchical manner, where smaller (proto-)galaxies merge into larger ones. Stars in galaxies, like the Milky Way, contain in their motions and elemental abundances tracers of past events and can be used to disentangle merger remnants from stars that formed in the main galaxy. The merger history of the Milky Way is generally understood to be particularly easy to study in the stellar halo. The advent of the ESA astrometric satellite Gaia has enabled the detec…
The existence of stellar cusps in dense clusters around massive black holes is a fundamental, decades-old prediction of theoretical stellar dynamics. Yet, observational evidence has been difficult to obtain. With a new, improved analysis of high-angular resolution images of the central parsecs of the Galactic Center, we are finally able to provide the first solid evidence for the existence of a stellar cusp around the Milky Way's massive black hole. The existence of stellar cusps has a significant impact on predicted event rates of phenomena like tidal disruptions of stars and extreme mass rat…
How the Milky Way has accumulated its mass over the Hubble time, whether significant amounts of gas and stars were accreted from satellite galaxies, or whether the Milky Way has experienced an initial gas assembly and then evolved more-or-less in isolation is one of the burning questions in modern astronomy, because it has consequences for our understanding of galaxy formation in the cosmological context. Here we present the evolutionary model of a Milky Way-type satellite system zoomed into a cosmological large-scale simulation. Embedded into Dark Matter halos and allowing for baryonic proces…
We use the Bullock & Johnston suite of simulations to study the density profiles of L*-type galaxy stellar haloes. Observations of the Milky Way and M31 stellar haloes show contrasting results: the Milky Way has a `broken' profile, where the density falls off more rapidly beyond ~ 25 kpc, while M31 has a smooth profile out to 100 kpc with no obvious break. Simulated stellar haloes, built solely by the accretion of dwarf galaxies, also exhibit this behavior: some haloes have breaks, while others don't. The presence or absence of a break in the stellar halo profile can be related to the accretio…
We discuss the predicted performance of the HARMONI spectrograph and the ELT in the context of two specific science cases: resolved stellar populations of Local Volume galaxies and Galactic archaeology in dense environments. We have produced and analysed a set of simulated data-cubes using the HSIM software, mimicking observations across the giant elliptical galaxy Centaurus A and in the nuclear bulge of the Milky Way. We use our results to demonstrate the instruments capabilities to perform stellar absorption line spectroscopy in a large number of stars which will allow us to study the detail…
We report the discovery of a 70-degree long stellar stream in the Milky Way halo, which criss-crosses the well known "GD-1" stream. We show that this new stellar structure ("Kshir") and GD-1 lie at similar distance, and are remarkably correlated in kinematics. We propose several explanations for the nature of this new structure and its possible association with GD-1. However, a scenario in which these two streams were accreted onto the Milky Way within the same dark matter sub-halo seems to provide a natural explanation for their phase-space entanglement, and other complexities of this coupled…
We use the clump giants of the disk as standard candles calibrated from Hipparcos parallaxes in order to map their distribution with two new near-IR surveys of the Galactic plane: UKIDSS-GPS and VVV. We explore different selection cuts of clump giants. We conclude that there is an edge of the stellar disk of the Milky Way at R=13.9+/-0.5kpc along various lines of sight across the galaxy. The effect of the warp is considered, taking fields at different longitudes and above and below the plane. We demonstrate that the edge of the stellar disk of the Milky Way can now be mapped in the near infrar…
Stellar streams are key players in many aspects of Milky Way studies and, in particular, studying their orbital dynamics is crucial for furthering our understanding of the Milky Way's gravitational potential. Although this is not a trivial task when faced with incomplete dynamical phase-space information, transverse motions of streams can nevertheless be comprehended by harnessing the information contained within their radial velocity gradients. Such methods are not only applicable to stellar streams, but also to HI streams residing in the Milky Way halo. Here, I present the results of two stu…
We investigate the possibility that the recently discovered Hercules Milky Way satellite is in fact a stellar stream in formation, thereby explaining its very elongated shape with an axis ratio of 3 to 1. Under the assumption that Hercules is a stellar stream and that its stars are flowing along the orbit of its progenitor, we find an orbit that would have recently brought the system close enough to the Milky Way to induce its disruption and transformation from a bound dwarf galaxy into a stellar stream. The application of simple analytical techniques to the tentative radial velocity gradient …
Dwarf spheroidal galaxies (dSph) orbiting the Milky Way are complex objects often with complicated star formation histories and internal dynamics. In this work, we search for stellar substructures in four of the classical dSph satellites of the Milky Way: Sextans, Carina, Leo I, and Leo II. We apply two methods to search for stellar substructure: the minimum spanning tree method, which helps us to find and quantify spatially connected structures, and the "brute-force" method, which is able to find elongated stellar substructures. We detected the previously known substructure in Sextans, and al…
Galactic nuclei, like the one of the Milky Way, are extreme places with high stellar densities and, in most cases, hosting a supermassive black hole. One of the scenarios proposed for the formation of the Galactic nucleus is by merging of primordial globular clusters (Capuzzo-Dolcetta 1993). An implication of this model is that this region should host stars characteristically found in old Milky Way globular clusters. RR Lyrae stars are primary distance indicators, well known representatives of old and metal-poor stellar populations, and therefore regularly found in globular clusters. Here we r…
The inconsistency of the observed rotational velocity curve of the Milky Way with the current theory of gravitational dynamics is well documented. The curve implies the presence of significantly more mass, or dark matter, than is observable. Current models estimate the amount of dark matter to be of the order of 85% of total matter. This paper explores relativistic neutrinos as a potential source of dark matter and proposes a crude binary star accretion model mechanism at the centre of the Milky Way for their production. The results show this to be consistent with the current theory of gravita…
We present an analytic model of the stellar mass distribution of the Milky Way bar. The model is obtained by fitting a multi-component parametric density distribution to a made-to-measure N-body model of Portail et al., constructed to match a variety of density and kinematics observational data. The analytic model reproduces in detail the 3D density distribution of the N-body bar including the X-shape. The model and the gravitational potential it generates are available as part of the software package AGAMA for galactic dynamics, and can be readily used for orbit integrations, hydrodynamical s…
The Besançon Galaxy model was used to compare the infrared colour distribution of synthetic stars with those from 2MASS observations taking the selection function of the data into account, in order to study the shape of the stellar halo of the Milky Way, with complemetary spectroscopic data from SDSS-III/APOGEE survey. Furthermore, we compared the generated mock metallicity distribution of the Besançon Galaxy model, to the intrinsic metallicity distribution with reliable stellar parameters from the APOGEE Stellar Parameters and Chemical Abundances Pipeline (ASPCAP). The comparison was carried …
We study the globular clusters (GCs) in the spiral galaxy NGC~5907 well-known for its spectacular stellar stream -- to better understand its origin. Using wide-field Subaru/Suprime-Cam $gri$ images and deep Keck/DEIMOS multi-object spectroscopy, we identify and obtain the kinematics of several GCs superimposed on the stellar stream and the galaxy disk. We estimate the total number of globular clusters in NGC 5907 to be $154\pm44$, with a specific frequency of $0.73\pm0.21$. Our analysis also reveals a significant, new population of young star cluster candidates found mostly along the outskirts…
It is now known that minor mergers are capable of creating structure in the phase-space distribution of their host galaxy's disc. In order to search for such imprints in the Milky Way, we analyse the SEGUE F/G-dwarf and the Schuster et al. (2006) stellar samples. We find similar features in these two completely independent stellar samples, consistent with the predictions of a Milky Way minor-merger event. We next apply the same analyses to high-resolution, idealised N-body simulations of the interaction between the Sagittarius dwarf galaxy and the Milky Way. The energy distributions of stellar…
We present the first stellar density profile of the Milky Way bulge reaching latitude $b=0^\circ$. It is derived by counting red clump stars within the colour\--magnitude diagram constructed with the new PSF-fitting photometry from VISTA Variables in the V\'ıa Láctea (VVV) survey data. The new stellar density map covers the area between $|l|\leq 10^\circ$ and $|b|\leq 4.5^\circ$ with unprecedented accuracy, allowing to establish a direct link between the stellar kinematics from the Giraffe Inner Bulge Spectroscopic Survey (GIBS) and the stellar mass density distribution. In particular, the loc…
In chemodynamical evolution models it is usually assumed that the Milky Way galaxy forms from the inside-out implying that gas inflows onto the disk decrease with galactocentric distance. Similarly, to reproduce differences between chemical abundances of the thick disk and bulge with respect to those of the thin disk, higher accretion fluxes at early times are postulated. By using a suite of Milky Way-like galaxies extracted from cosmological simulations, we investigate the accretion of gas on the simulated stellar disks during their whole evolution. In general, we find that the picture outlin…
Stellar cluster formation in a Milky Way-sized galaxy at z>4 -- II. A hybrid formation scenario for the nuclear star cluster and its connection to the nuclear stellar ring
We present a panoramic map of the stellar streams of the Milky Way based upon astrometric and photometric measurements from the Gaia DR2 catalogue. In this first contribution, we concentrate on the halo at heliocentric distances beyond 5 kpc, and at Galactic latitudes $|b|>30°$, using the STREAMFINDER algorithm to detect structures along plausible orbits that are consistent with the Gaia proper motion measurements. We find a rich network of criss-crossing streams in the halo. Some of these structures were previously-known, several are new discoveries, but others are potentially artefacts of th…
Stellar migration is an important dynamical process in Galactic disk. Here we model the radial stellar migration in the Galactic disk with an analytical method, then add it to detailed Galactic chemical evolution model to study the influence of radial stellar migration on the chemical evolution of the Milky Way, especially for the abundance gradients. We found that the radial stellar migration in the Galactic disk can make the profile of the G-dwarf metallicity distribution of the solar neighborhood taller and narrower, thus it becomes another solution to the "G-dwarf problem". It can also sca…
We study stellar-halo formation using six Milky Way-mass galaxies in FIRE-2 cosmological zoom simulations. We find that $5-40\%$ of the outer ($50-300$ kpc) stellar halo in each system consists of $\textit{in-situ}$ stars that were born in outflows from the main galaxy. Outflow stars originate from gas accelerated by super-bubble winds, which can be compressed, cool, and form co-moving stars. The majority of these stars remain bound to the halo and fall back with orbital properties similar to the rest of the stellar halo at $z=0$.In the outer halo, outflow stars are more spatially homogeneous,…
We present evidence for a new Milky Way stellar tidal stream in the direction of the Andromeda and Triangulum (M31 and M33) galaxies. Using a matched-filter technique, we search the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 8 by creating stellar density maps which probe the Milky Way halo at distances between 8 and 40 kpc. A visual search of these maps recovers all of the major known stellar streams, as well as a new stream in the direction of M31/M33 which we name the Triangulum stream. The stream spans 0.2 deg by 12 deg on the sky, or 75 pc by 5.5 kpc in physical units with a best fitting distan…
Adami et al. (2010) have detected several cluster candidates at z>0.5 as part of a systematic search for clusters in the Canada France Hawaii Telescope Legacy Survey, based on photometric redshifts. We focus here on two of them, located in the D3 field: D3-6 and D3-43. We have obtained spectroscopy with Gemini/GMOS and measured redshifts for 23 and 14 galaxies in the two structures. These redshifts were combined with those available in the literature. A dynamical and a weak lensing analysis were also performed, together with the study of X-ray Chandra archive data. Cluster D3-6 is found to be …
We investigate whether the stellar initial mass function (IMF) is universal, or whether it varies significantly among young stellar clusters in the Milky Way. We propose a method to uncover the range of variation of the parameters that describe the shape of the IMF for the population of young Galactic clusters. These parameters are the slopes in the low and high stellar mass regimes, $γ$ and $Γ$, respectively, and the characteristic mass, $M_{ch}$. The method relies exclusively on the high mass content of the clusters, but is able to yield information on the distributions of parameters that de…
We investigate the possibility that Hercules, a recently discovered Milky Way (MW) satellite, is a stellar stream in the process of formation. This hypothesis is motivated by Hercules' highly elongated shape as well as the measurement of a tentative radial velocity gradient along its body. The application of simple analytical techniques on radial velocity data of its member stars provides tight constraints on the tangential velocity of the system (v_t = -16^{+6}_{-22} km/s, relative to the Galactic Standard of Rest). Combining this with its large receding velocity (145 km/s) and distance (138 …
By analyzing a N-body simulation of a bulge formed simply via a bar instability mechanism operating on a kinematically cold stellar disk, and by comparing the results of this analysis with the structural and kinematic properties of the main stellar populations of the Milky Way bulge, we conclude that the bulge of our Galaxy is not a pure stellar bar formed from a pre-existing thin stellar disk, as some studies have recently suggested. On the basis of several arguments emphasized in this paper, we propose that the bulge population which, in the Milky Way, is observed not to be part of the peanu…
The Galactic bulge is a tumultuous dense region of space, packed with stars separated by far smaller distances than those in the Solar neighborhood. A quantification of the frequency and proximity of close stellar encounters in this environment dictates the exchange of material, disruption of planetary orbits, and threat of sterilizing energetic events. We present estimated encounter rates for stars in the Milky Way bulge found using a combination of numerical and analytical methods. By integrating the orbits of bulge stars with varying orbital energy and angular momentum to find their positio…
We present a census of blue horizontal branch (BHB) and blue straggler (BS) stars belonging to dwarf galaxies and globular clusters, and compare these counts to that of the Milky Way stellar halo. We find, in agreement with earlier studies, that the ratio of BS-to-BHB stars in these satellite populations is dependent on stellar mass. Dwarf galaxies show an increasing BS-to-BHB ratio with luminosity. In contrast, globular clusters display the reverse trend, with N_BS/N_BHB (< 1) decreasing with luminosity. The faintest (L < 10^5 L_Sun) dwarfs have similar numbers of BS and BHB stars (N_BS/N_BHB…
The existence of stellar halos around galaxies is a natural prediction of the hierarchical nature of the LambdaCDM model. Recent observations of Milky Way-like galaxies have revealed a wide range in stellar halo mass, including cases with no statistically significant detection of a stellar halo, as in the case of M101, NGC3351 and NGC1042. We use the Illustris simulation to investigate the scatter in stellar halo content and, in particular, to study the formation of galaxies with the smallest fraction of this diffuse component. Stellar halos are far from spherical, which diminishes the surface…
The Milky Way provides an ideal laboratory to test our understanding of galaxy evolution, owing to our ability to observe our Galaxy over fine scales. However, connecting the Galaxy to the wider galaxy population remains difficult, due to the challenges posed by our internal perspective and to the different observational techniques employed. Here, we present a sample of galaxies identified as Milky Way Analogs (MWAs) on the basis of their stellar masses and bulge-to-total ratios, observed as part of the Mapping Nearby Galaxies at Apache Point Observatory (MaNGA) survey. We analyse the galaxies…
We study the stellar mass-to-halo mass relation at $z=0$ in 30 Milky Way-like systems down to the ultra-faint ($M_* < 10^5 M_\odot$) regime using the semi-analytic model A-SLOTH. A new model allows us to follow star formation and the stochastic stellar feedback from individually sampled Pop II stars. Our fiducial model produces consistent results with the stellar mass-to-halo mass relation derived from abundance matching and the observed cumulative stellar mass function above the observational completeness. We find a plateau in the stellar mass-to-halo mass relation in the ultra-faint regime. …
Early-type dwarfs (ETDs) are the end points of the evolution of low-mass galaxies whose gas supply has been extinguished. The cessation of star-formation lays bare the ancient stellar populations. A wealth of information is stored in the colours, magnitudes, metallicities and abundances of resolved stars of the dwarf spheroidal and ultra-faint galaxies around the Milky Way, allowing their chemistry and stellar populations to be studied in great detail. Here, we summarize our current understanding, which has advanced rapidly over the last decade thanks to the flourishing of large-scale astromet…
We report results concerning the distribution and properties of galactic extinction at high galactic latitudes derived from stellar statistics using the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). We use the classical Wolf diagram method to identify regions with extinction, and derive the extinction and the extinction law of the dust using all five SDSS spectral bands. We estimate the distance to the extinguishing medium using simple assumptions about the stellar populations in the line of sight. We report the identification of three extinguishing clouds, each a few tens of pc wide, producing 0.2-0.4 mag…
The nuclear stellar disc (NSD) is a flat dense stellar structure at the heart of the Milky Way. Recent work has shown that analogous structures are common in the nuclei of external spiral galaxies, where there is evidence of an age gradient that indicates that they form inside-out. However, the characterisation of the age of the NSD stellar population along the line of sight is still missing due to its extreme source crowding and the high interstellar extinction towards the Galactic centre. We aim to characterise the age of the stellar population at different average Galactocentric NSD radii t…
Context. Stellar tidal streams are the result of tidal interactions between a central galaxy and lower mass systems like satellite galaxies or globular clusters. For the Local Group, many diffuse substructures have been identified and their link to the galaxy evolution has been traced. However it cannot be assumed that the Milky Way or M31 are representative of their galaxy class, and a larger sample of analogue galaxies beyond the Local Group is required to be able to generalise the underlying theory. Aims. We want to characterise photometrically the stellar streams around Milky Way analogues…
The Milky Way's nuclear stellar disc (NSD) and nuclear star cluster (NSC) are the main features of the Galactic centre. Nevertheless, their observation is hampered by the extreme source crowding and high extinction. Hence, their relation and formation scenario are not fully clear yet. We aim at detecting the stellar populations from the NSC and the NSD along the line-of-sight towards the NSC, and assess whether they have different stellar populations and star formation histories. We analysed the colour-magnitude diagram, $K_s$ vs. $H-K_s$, of a region of $8.2'\times2.8'$ centred on the NSC, an…
We have used N-body simulations for the Milky Way to investigate the kinematic and structural properties of the old metal-poor stellar halo in the barred inner region of the Galaxy. We find that the extrapolation of the density distribution for bulge RR Lyrae stars, $ρ\sim r^{-3}$, approximately matches the number density of RR Lyrae in the nearby stellar halo. We follow the evolution of such a tracer population through the formation and evolution of the bar and box/peanut bulge in the N-body model. We find that its density distribution changes from oblate to triaxial, and that it acquires slo…
We show for the first time, that a fully cosmological hydrodynamical simulation can reproduce key properties of the innermost region of the Milky Way. Our high resolution simulation matches the profile and kinematics of the Milky Way's boxy/peanut-shaped bulge, and hence we can use it to reconstruct and understand the bulge assembly. In particular, the age dependence of the X-shape morphology of the simulated bulge parallels the observed metallicity dependent split in the red clump stars of the inner Galaxy. We use this feature to derive an observational metric that allows us to quantify when …
We reveal the highly structured nature of the Milky Way stellar halo within the footprint of the PAndAS photometric survey from blue main sequence and main sequence turn-off stars. We map no fewer than five stellar structures within a heliocentric range of ~5 to 30 kpc. Some of these are known (the Monoceros Ring, the Pisces/Triangulum globular cluster stream), but we also uncover three well-defined stellar structures that could be, at least partly, responsible for the so-called Triangulum/Andromeda and Triangulum/Andromeda 2 features. In particular, we trace a new faint stellar stream located…
The formation of galaxies can be understood in terms of the assembly patterns of each type of galactic component. To perform this kind of analysis, is necessary to define some criteria to separate those components. Decomposition methods based on dynamical properties are more physically motivated than photometry-based ones. We use the unsupervised Gaussian Mixture model of \texttt{galactic structure finder} to extract the components of a sub-sample of galaxies with Milky Way-like masses from the EAGLE simulations. A clustering in the space of first and second order dynamical moments of all iden…
We use the extensive $Gaia$ Data Release 2 set of Long Period Variables to select a sample of Oxygen-rich Miras throughout the Milky Way disk and bulge for study. Exploiting the relation between Mira pulsation period and stellar age/chemistry, we slice the stellar density of the Galactic disk and bulge as a function of period. We find the morphology of both components evolves as a function of stellar age/chemistry with the stellar disk being stubby at old ages, becoming progressively thinner and more radially extended at younger stellar ages, consistent with the picture of inside-out and upsid…
Galactic interstellar extinction maps are powerful and necessary tools for Milky Way structure and stellar population analyses, particularly toward the heavily-reddened bulge and in the midplane. However, due to the difficulty of obtaining reliable extinction measures and distances for a large number of stars that are independent of these maps, tests of their accuracy and systematics have been limited. Our goal is to assess a variety of photometric stellar extinction estimates, including both 2D and 3D extinction maps, using independent extinction measures based on a large spectroscopic sample…
We introduce a new maximum likelihood method to model the density profile of Blue Horizontal Branch and Blue Straggler stars and apply it to the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 8 (DR8) photometric catalogue. There are a large number (20,000) of these tracers available over an impressive 14,000 square degrees in both Northern and Southern Galactic hemispheres, and they provide a robust measurement of the shape of the Milky Way stellar halo. After masking out stars in the vicinity of the Virgo Overdensity and the Sagittarius stream, the data are consistent with a smooth, oblate stellar hal…
