We report results concerning the distribution and properties of galactic extinction at high galactic latitudes derived from stellar statistics using the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). We use the classical Wolf diagram method to identify regions with extinction, and derive the extinction and the extinction law of the dust using all five SDSS spectral bands. We estimate the distance to the extinguishing medium using simple assumptions about the stellar populations in the line of sight.
We report the identification of three extinguishing clouds, each a few tens of pc wide, producing 0.2-0.4 mag of g'-band extinction, located 1-2 kpc away or 0.5-1 kpc above the galactic plane. All clouds exhibit grey extinction, i.e., almost wavelength-independent in the limited spectral range of the SDSS. We discuss the implication of this finding on general astrophysical questions.
Observed extinction curves of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) are significantly different from those observed in the Milky Way. The observations require preferential removal of small grains at the AGN environment; however, the physics for this remains unclear. In this paper, we propose that dust destruction by charging, or Coulomb explosion, may be responsible for AGN extinction curves. Harsh AGN radiation makes a dust grain highly charged through photoelectric emission, and grain fission via the Coulomb explosion occurs when the electrostatic tensile stress of a charge grain exceeds its tensile…
We use photometry in the F220W, F250W, F330W, F435W filters from the High Resolution Channel of the Advanced Camera for Surveys and photometry in the F555W, F675W, and F814W filters from the Wide Field and Planetary Camera 2 aboard the Hubble Space Telescope to derive individual stellar reddenings and extinctions for stars in the HD 97950 cluster in the giant HII region NGC 3603. The mean line-of-sight reddening for about a hundred main-sequence member stars inside the cluster is $E(F435W-F555W)=1.33\pm0.12$ mag. After correcting for foreground reddening, the total to selective extinction rati…
We have obtained accurate dust reddening from far-ultraviolet (UV) to the mid-infrared (IR) for up to 5 million stars by the star-pair algorithm based on LAMOST stellar parameters along with GALEX, Pan-STARRS 1, Gaia, SDSS, 2MASS, and WISE photometric data. The typical errors are between 0.01-0.03 mag for most colors. We derived the empirical reddening coefficients for 21 colors both in the traditional (single valued) way and as a function of Teff and E(B-V) by using the largest samples of accurate reddening measurements, together with the extinction values from Schlegel et al. The correspondi…
Aims: We used 12,530 photometrically-selected blue horizontal branch (BHB) stars from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) to estimate the total extinction of the Milky Way at the high Galactic latitudes, $R_V$ and $A_V$ in each line of sight. Methods: A Bayesian method was developed to estimate the reddening values in the given lines of sight. Based on the most likely values of reddening in multiple colors, we were able to derive the values of $R_V$ and $A_V$. Results: We selected 94 zero-reddened BHB stars from seven globular clusters as the template. The reddening in the four SDSS colors for…
We use spectra of more than 56,000 M dwarfs from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) to create a high-latitude extinction map of the local Galaxy. Our technique compares spectra from the stars in the SDSS Data Release 7 M dwarf sample in low-extinction lines of sight, as determined by Schlegel, Finkbeiner, & Davis, to other SDSS M dwarf spectra in order to derive improved distance estimates and accurate line-of-sight extinctions. Unlike most previous studies, which have used a two-color method to determine extinction, we fit extinction curves to fluxes across the entire spectral range from 570…
With modern large scale spectroscopic surveys, such as the SDSS and LSS-GAC, Galactic astronomy has entered the era of millions of stellar spectra. Taking advantage of the huge spectroscopic database, we propose to use a "standard pair" technique to a) Estimate multi-band extinction towards sightlines of millions of stars; b) Detect and measure the diffuse interstellar bands in hundreds of thousands SDSS and LAMOST low-resolution spectra; c) Search for extremely faint emission line nebulae in the Galaxy; and d) Perform photometric calibration for wide field imaging surveys. In this contributio…
We present the fiducial main sequence stellar locus traced by 10 photometric colors observed by SDSS, 2MASS, and WISE. Median colors are determined using 1,052,793 stars with r-band extinction less than 0.125. We use this locus to measure the dust extinction curve relative to the r-band, which is consistent with previous measurements in the SDSS and 2MASS bands. The WISE band extinction coefficients are larger than predicted by standard extinction models. Using 13 lines of sight, we find variations in the extinction curve in H, Ks, and WISE bandpasses. Relative extinction decreases towards Gal…
A precise interstellar dust extinction law is critically important to interpret observations. There are two indicators of extinction: the color excess ratio (CER) and the relative extinction. Compared to the CER, the wavelength-dependent relative extinction is more challenging to be determined. In this work, we combine spectroscopic, astrometric, and photometric data to derive high-precision CERs and relative extinction from optical to mid-infrared (IR) bands. A group of 61,111 red clump (RC) stars are selected as tracers by stellar parameters from APOGEE survey. The multiband photometric data…
We have applied the method of star counts with Wolf diagrams to determine the interstellar extinction in five Galactic cirri in Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Stripe 82. For this purpose, we have used the photometry of stars in the GALEX NUV filter and the photometry of red dwarfs in five SDSS bands and four SkyMapper Southern Sky Survey DR2 bands. We have identified the cirri as sky regions with an enhanced infrared emission from the Schlegel+1998 map. The extinction in them has been calculated relative to the nearby comparison regions with a reduced emission. The results for different filte…
We use SDSS photometry of 73 million stars to simultaneously obtain best-fit main-sequence stellar energy distribution (SED) and amount of dust extinction along the line of sight towards each star. Using a subsample of 23 million stars with 2MASS photometry, whose addition enables more robust results, we show that SDSS photometry alone is sufficient to break degeneracies between intrinsic stellar color and dust amount when the shape of extinction curve is fixed. When using both SDSS and 2MASS photometry, the ratio of the total to selective absorption, $R_V$, can be determined with an uncertain…
Mass Metallicity Relationship of SDSS Star Forming Galaxies: Population Synthesis Analysis and Effects of Star Burst Length, Extinction Law, Initial Mass Function and Star Formation Rate
Using over a million and a half extragalactic spectra we study the properties of the mysterious Diffuse Interstellar Bands (DIBs) in the Milky Way. These data provide us with an unprecedented sampling of the skies at high Galactic-latitude and low dust-column-density. We present our method, study the correlation of the equivalent width of 8 DIBs with dust extinction and with a few atomic species, and the distribution of four DIBs - 5780.6A, 5797.1A, 6204.3A, and 6613.6A - over nearly 15000 squared degrees. As previously found, DIBs strengths correlate with extinction and therefore inevitably w…
Using the "standard pair" technique of paring stars of almost nil and high extinction but otherwise of almost identical stellar parameters from the SDSS, and combing the SDSS, GALEX, 2MASS and WISE photometry ranging from the far UV to the mid-IR, we have measured dust reddening in the FUV-NUV, NUV-u, u-g, g-r, r-i, i-z, z-J, J-H, H-Ks, Ks-W1 and W1-W2 colors for thousands of Galactic stars. The measurements, together with the E(B-V) values given by Schlegel et al. (1998), allow us to derive the observed, model-free reddening coefficients for those colors. The results are compared with previou…
Large spectroscopic surveys have enabled in the recent years the computation of three-dimensional interstellar extinction maps thanks to accurate stellar atmospheric parameters and line-of-sight distances. Such maps are complementary to 3D maps extracted from photometry, allowing a more thorough study of the dust properties. Our goal is to use the high-resolution spectroscopic survey Gaia-ESO in order to obtain with a good distance resolution the interstellar extinction and its dependency as a function of the environment and the Galactocentric position. We use the stellar atmospheric parameter…

Estimators of Bolometric Luminosity and Black Hole Mass with Mid-infrared Continuum Luminosities for Dust-obscured Quasars: Prevalence of Dust-obscured SDSS Quasars
We investigate reddening by Milky Way dust in the low-extinction regime of $E_{B-V}<0.15$. Using over 50,000 QSOs at $0.5<z<2.5$ from the SDSS DR7 QSO Catalogue we probe the residual SDSS colours after dereddening and correcting for the known spectroscopic redshifts. We find that the extinction vector of Schlafly & Finkbeiner (2011) is a better fit to the data than that used by Schlegel et al. (1998, SFD). There is evidence for a non-linearity in the SFD reddening map, which is similarly present in the V1.2 map of the Planck Collaboration. This non-linearity is similarly seen when galaxies or …
Integral field unit (IFU) spectra of face-on star-forming galaxies from the MaNGA survey are stacked in radial bins so as to reach a S/N high enough to measure emission lines and Lick indices out to 2.5-3 R_e. Two thirds of galaxies have stellar populations in the outer disks that are older, more metal poor and less dusty than in the inner disks. Recent bursts of star formation have occurred more frequently in the outer disk, but extinction-corrected Halpha equivalent widths are significantly lower at fixed D_n(4000) in these regions. I examine the properties of a subset of galaxies with the t…
We investigate how the typical dust extinction of H-alpha luminosity from a star-forming galaxy depends upon star formation rate (SFR), metallicity and stellar mass independently, using a sample of ~90,000 galaxies from Data Release 7 of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). We measure extinctions directly from the Balmer decrement of each source, and while higher values of extinction are associated with an increase in any of the three parameters, we demonstrate that the fundamental property that governs extinction is stellar mass. After this mass-dependent relationship is removed, there is ver…
We determine the extinction law through Cep OB3b, a young cluster of 3000 stars undergoing gas dispersal. The extinction is measured toward 76 background K giants identified with MMT/Hectospec spectra. Color excess ratios were determined toward each of the giants using $V$ and $R$ photometry from the literature, $g$,$r$,$i$ and $z$ photometry from SDSS and $J$, $H$, and $K_{s}$ photometry from 2MASS. These color excess ratios were the used to construct the extinction law through the dusty material associated with Cep OB3b. The extinction law through Cep OB3b is intermediate between the $R_{V} …
The most widely used Galactic extinction map (Schlegel, Finkbeiner, & Davis 1998, SFD) is constructed assuming that the observed FIR fluxes entirely come from the Galactic dust. According to the earlier suggestion by Yahata et al. (2007), we consider how far-infrared (FIR) emission of galaxies affects the SFD map. We first compute the surface number density of SDSS DR7 galaxies as a function of the $r$-band extinction, $A_{r,\rm SFD}$. We confirm that the surface densities of those galaxies positively correlate with $A_{r,\rm SFD}$ for $A_{r,\rm SFD}<0.1$, as first discovered by Yahata et al. …
We propose a Bayesian method to measure the total Galactic extinction parameters, $R_V$ and $A_V$. Validation tests based on the simulated data indicate that the method can achieve the accuracy of around 0.01\,mag. We apply this method to the SDSS BHB stars in the northern Galactic cap and find that the derived extinctions are highly consistent with those from \cite{SFD98}. It suggests that the Bayesian method is promising for the extinction estimation, even the reddening values are close to the observational errors.
SN Hun248 was classified as a nonterminal eruption (a SN "impostor") from a directly identified and highly variable cool hypergiant star. The 2014 outburst achieved peak luminosity equivalent to that of the historic eruption of luminous blue variable (LBV) Eta Car, and exhibited a multipeaked optical light curve that rapidly faded after ~100 days. We report ultraviolet (UV) through optical observations of SN Hunt248 with the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) about 1 yr after the outburst, and mid-infrared observations with the Spitzer Space Telescope before the burst and in decline. The HST data re…
We have performed stacking image analyses of galaxies over the Galactic extinction map constructed by Schlegel, Finkbeiner & Davis (1998). We select ~10^7 galaxies in total from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) DR7 photometric catalog. We detect clear signatures of the enhancement of the extinction in r-band, $ΔA_r$, around galaxies, indicating that the extinction map is contaminated by their FIR (far infrared) emission. The average amplitude of the contamination per galaxy is well fitted to $ΔA_r(m_r) = 0.64 \times 10^{0.17(18-m_r)}$ [mmag]. While this value is very small, it is directly a…
We use our integrated SDSS photometry for 96 globular clusters in $g$ and $z$, as well as $r$ and $i$ photometry for a subset of 56 clusters, to derive the integrated colour-metallicity relation (CMR) for Galactic globular clusters. We compare this relation to previous work, including extragalactic clusters, and examine the influence of age, present-day mass function variations, structural parameters and the morphology of the horizontal branch on the relation. Moreover, we scrutinise the scatter introduced by foreground extinction (including differential reddening) and show that the scatter in…
We present an automatic procedure to perform reliable photometry of galaxies on SDSS images. We selected a sample of 5853 galaxies in the Coma and Virgo superclusters. For each galaxy, we derive Petrosian g and i magnitudes, surface brightness profiles and color profiles. Unlike the SDSS pipeline, our procedure is not affected by the well known shredding problem and efficiently extracts Petrosian magnitudes for all galaxies. Hence we derived magnitudes even from the population of galaxies missed by the SDSS that represents 25% of all Local supercluster galaxies and ~95% of galaxies with g < 11…
A precise measure of the mid-infrared interstellar extinction law is crucial to the investigation of the properties of interstellar dust, especially of the grains in the large size end. Based on the stellar parameters derived from the SDSS-III/APOGEE spectroscopic survey, we select a large sample of G- and K-type giants as the tracers of the Galactic mid-infrared extinction. We calculate the intrinsic stellar color excesses from the stellar effective temperatures and use them to determine the mid-infrared extinction for a given line of sight. For the entire sky of the Milky Way surveyed by APO…
We perform Jeans anisotropic modeling (JAM) on elliptical and spiral galaxies from the MaNGA DR13 sample. By comparing the stellar mass-to-light ratios estimated from stellar population synthesis (SPS) and from JAM, we find a similar systematic variation of the initial mass function (IMF) as in the earlier $\rm ATLAS^{3D}$ results. Early type galaxies (elliptical and lenticular) with lower velocity dispersions within one effective radius are consistent with a Chabrier-like IMF while galaxies with higher velocity dispersions are consistent with a more bottom heavy IMF such as the Salpeter IMF. …
Diffuse interstellar bands (DIBs) have been discovered for almost a century, but their nature remains one of the most challenging problems in astronomical spectroscopy. Most recent work to identify and investigate the properties and carriers of DIBs concentrates on high-resolution spectroscopy of selected sight-lines. In this paper, we report detections of DIBs in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) low-resolution spectra of a large sample of Galactic stars. Using a template subtraction method, we have successfully identified the DIBs $λ$$λ$5780, 6283 in the SDSS spectra of a sample of about 2…
We study a hundred of galaxies from the spectroscopic Sloan Digital Sky Survey with individual detections in the Far-Infrared Herschel PACS bands (100 or 160 $μ$m) and in the GALEX Far-UltraViolet band up to z$\sim$0.4 in the COSMOS and Lockman Hole fields. The galaxies are divided into 4 spectral and 4 morphological types. For the star forming and unclassifiable galaxies we calculate dust extinctions from the UV slope, the H$α$/H$β$ ratio and the $L_{\rm IR}/L_{\rm UV}$ ratio. There is a tight correlation between the dust extinction and both $L_{\rm IR}$ and metallicity. We calculate SFR$_{to…
Using star-forming galaxies sample in the nearby Universe (0.02<z<0.10) selected from the SDSS (DR7) and GALEX all-sky survey (GR5), we present a new empirical calibration for predicting dust extinction of galaxies from H-alpha-to-FUV flux ratio. We find that the H-alpha dust extinction (A(Ha)) derived with H-alpha/H-beta ratio (Balmer decrement) increases with increasing H-alpha/UV ratio as expected, but there remains a considerable scatter around the relation, which is largely dependent on stellar mass and/or H-alpha equivalent width (EW(Ha)). At fixed H-alpha/UV ratio, galaxies with higher …
In order to study the properties and effects of high Galactic latitude dust we present an analysis of 373,303 galaxies selected from the Galaxy Evolution Explorer (GALEX) All-Sky Survey and Wide-Field Infrared Explorer (WISE) All-Sky Data Release. By examining the variation in aggregate ultraviolet colors and number density of these galaxies we measure the extinction curve at high latitude. We additionally consider a population of spectroscopically selected galaxies from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) to measure extinction in the optical. We find that dust at high latitude is neither quan…
We present a catalogue of an HI-selected sample of 1129 low surface brightness galaxies (LSBGs) searched from the alpha.40-SDSS DR7 survey. This sample, consisting of various types of galaxies in terms of luminosity and morphology, has extended the parameter space covered by the existing LSBG samples. Based on a subsample of 173 LSBGs which are selected from our entire LSBG sample to have the 2-horn shapes of the HI line profiles, minor-to-major axial ratios (b/a) less than 0.6 and signal-to-noise ratio (S/N) of HI detection greater than 6.5, we investigated the Tully-Fisher relation (TFr) of …
We combine data from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey and the Galaxy Evolution Explorer to simultaneously analyze optical spectra and ultraviolet photometry of 231643 galaxies with the STARLIGHT spectral synthesis code using state-of-the-art stellar population models. We present a new method to estimate GALEX photometry in the SDSS spectroscopic aperture, which proves quite reliable if applied to large samples. In agreement with previous experiments with CALIFA, we find that adding UV constraints leads to a moderate increase on the fraction of $\sim 10^7$ - $10^8$ yr populations and a concomitant …
We present a method to simultaneously infer the interstellar extinction parameters $A_0$ and $R_0$, stellar effective temperature $T_{\rm eff}$, and distance modulus $μ$ in a Bayesian framework. Using multi-band photometry from SDSS and UKIDSS, we train a forward model to emulate the colour-change due to physical properties of stars and the interstellar medium for temperatures from 4000 to 9000 K and extinctions from 0 to 5 mag. We introduce a Hertzsprung-Russel diagram prior to account for physical constraints on the distribution of stars in the temperature-absolute magnitude plane. This allo…
We determine the local metallicity of the ionized gas for more than $9.2\times 10^5$ star forming regions (spaxels) located in 1023 nearby galaxies included in the SDSS-IV MaNGA IFU survey. We use the dust extinction derived from the Balmer decrement and stellar template fitting in each spaxel to estimate the local gas and stellar mass densities, respectively. We also use the measured rotation curves to determine the local escape velocity ($\mathrm{V_{esc}}$). We have then analyze the relationships between the local metallicity and both the local gas fraction ($μ$) and $\mathrm{V_{esc}}$. We f…
We present measurements of dust reddening using the colors of stars with spectra in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. We measure reddening as the difference between the measured and predicted colors of a star, as derived from stellar parameters from the SEGUE Stellar Parameter Pipeline (Lee et al. 2008a). We achieve uncertainties of 56, 34, 25, and 29 mmag in the colors u-g, g-r, r-i, and i-z, per star, though the uncertainty varies depending on the stellar type and the magnitude of the star. The spectrum-based reddening measurements confirm our earlier "blue tip" reddening measurements (Schlafly …
We present new isochrone fits to colour-magnitude diagrams of the Galactic globular cluster NGC 5904 (M5). We utilise 29 photometric bands from the ultraviolet to mid-infrared by use of the data from the {\it Hubble Space Telescope}, {\it Gaia} DR2, {\it Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer}, Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS), and other photometric data. In our isochrone fitting we use the PAdova and TRieste Stellar Evolution Code, the MESA Isochrones and Stellar Tracks, the Dartmouth Stellar Evolution Program, and a Bag of Stellar Tracks and Isochrones both for the solar-scaled and enhanced He a…
We use the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Quasar Data Release 12 (DR12Q), containing nearly 300,000 AGNs, to calculate the monochromatic luminosities at 5100Å, 3000Å, and 1350Å, derived from the broad-band extinction-corrected SDSS magnitudes. After matching them to their counterparts based on spectra and published in the SDSS Quasar Data Release 7 (DR7Q), we find perfect correlations with minute mean offsets ($\sim$0.01 dex) and dispersions of differences of 0.11, 0.10, 0.12 dex, respectively, across a 2.5 dex luminosity range. We then estimate the active galactic nuclei (AGNs) black hole ma…
We present and analyze spatially-resolved maps for the observed $V$- and $g$-band to 3.6$μ$m flux ratios and the inferred dust extinction values, $A_V$, for a sample of 257 nearby NGC and IC galaxies. Flux ratio maps are constructed using PSF-matched mosaics of SDSS $g$- and $r$-band images and Spitzer/IRAC 3.6$μ$m mosaics, with all pixels contaminated by foreground stars or background objects masked out. By applying the $β_V$ method (Tamura et al. 2009, 2010), which was recently calibrated as a function of redshift and morphological type by Kim, Jansen, & Windhorst (2017), dust extinction map…
We analyse new optical observations of the gravitational lens system SDSS J1515+1511. These include a 2.6-year photometric monitoring with the Liverpool Telescope (LT) in the $r$ band, as well as a spectroscopic follow-up with the LT and the Gran Telescopio Canarias (GTC). Our $r$-band LT light curves cover a quiescent microlensing period of the doubly imaged quasar at $z_{\rm s}$ = 2.049, which permits us to robustly estimate the time delay between the two images A and B: 211 $\pm$ 5 days (1$σ$ confidence interval; A is leading). Unfortunately, the main lensing galaxy (G1) is so faint and clo…
This paper presents the results from the first wide and deep dual narrow-band survey to select H-alpha (Ha) and [OII] line emitters at z=1.47+-0.02 (using matched narrow-band filters in the H and z' bands), exploiting synergies between the UKIRT and Subaru telescopes. The Ha survey at z=1.47 reaches a flux limit of ~7x10^-17 erg/s/cm^2 and detects ~200 Ha emitters over 0.7deg^2, while the much deeper [OII] survey reaches an effective flux of ~7x10^-18 erg/s/cm^2, detecting ~1400 z=1.47 [OII] emitters in a matched co-moving volume of ~2.5x10^5 Mpc^3. The combined survey results in the identific…
By combining the photometric, spectroscopic, and astrometric information of the stars in the sightline of SNRs, the distances to and the extinctions of 32 Galactic supernova remnants (SNRs) are investigated. The stellar atmospheric parameters are from the SDSS$-$DR14$/$APOGEE and LAMOST$-$DR5$/$LEGUE spectroscopic surveys. The multi-band photometry, from optical to infrared, are collected from the {\it Gaia}, APASS, Pan--STARRS1, 2MASS, and {\it WISE} surveys. With the calibrated {\it Gaia} distances of individual stars, the distances to 15 of 32 SNRs are well determined from their produced ex…
Aims. We explore the outer Galactic disc up to a Galactocentric distance of 30 kpc to derive its parameters and measure the magnitude of its flare. Methods. We obtained the 3D density of stars of type F8V-G5V with a colour selection from extinction-corrected photometric data of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey - Sloan Extension for Galactic Understanding and Exploration (SDSS-SEGUE) over 1,400 deg^2 in off-plane low Galactic latitude regions and fitted it to a model of flared thin+thick disc. Results. The best-fit parameters are a thin-disc scale length of 2.0 kpc, a thin-disc scale height at sola…
We present a stellar parameter catalog built to accompany the MaStar Stellar Library, which is a comprehensive collection of empirical, medium-resolution stellar spectra. We constructed this parameter catalog by using a multicomponent $χ^{2}$ fitting approach to match MaStar spectra to models generated by interpolating the ATLAS9-based BOSZ model spectra. The total $χ^{2}$ for a given model is defined as the sum of components constructed to characterize narrow-band features of observed spectra (e.g., absorption lines) and the broadband continuum shape separately. Extinction and systematics due…
We have used GALEX and SDSS observations to extract 7 band photometric magnitudes for over 80,000 objects in the vicinity of the North Galactic Pole. Although these had been identified as stars by the SDSS pipeline, we found through fitting with model SEDs that most were, in fact, of extragalactic origin. Only about 9% of these objects turned out to be main sequence stars and about 11% were white dwarfs and red giants collectively, while galaxies and quasars contributed to the remaining 80% of the data. We have classified these objects into different spectral types (for the stars) and into dif…
We present a new database of absorption and emission-line measurements based on the entire spectral atlas from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) 7th data release of galaxies within a redshift of 0.2. Our work makes use of the publicly available penalized pixel-fitting(pPXF) and gas and absorption line fitting (gandalf) IDL codes, aiming to improve the existing measurements for stellar kinematics, the strength of various absorption-line features, and the flux and width of the emissions from different species of ionised gas. Our fit to the stellar continuum uses both standard stellar populatio…
The outcome of upcoming cosmological surveys will depend on the accurate estimates of photometric redshifts. In the framework of the implementation of the photo-z algorithm for Euclid, we are exploring new avenues to improve template-fitting methods. The paper focusses on the prescription of the extinction of source light by dust in the Milky Way. Since Galactic extinction strongly correlates with wavelength and photometry is commonly obtained in broad-band filters, the amount of absorption depends on the source SED, a point often neglected as the SED is not known a-priori. A consequence of th…
