We present a spectroscopic analysis of VLT/X-Shooter observations of six O-type stars in the low-metallicity (Z ~ 1/7 Z\odot) galaxies IC 1613, WLM and NGC 3109. The stellar and wind parameters of these sources allow us, for the first time, to probe the mass-loss versus metallicity dependence of stellar winds below that of the Small Magellanic Cloud (at Z ~ 1/5Z\odot) by means of a modified wind momentum versus luminosity diagram. The wind strengths that we obtain for the objects in WLM and NGC 3109 are unexpectedly high and do not agree with theoretical predictions. The objects in IC 1613 tend towards a higher than expected mass-loss rate, but remain consistent with predictions within their error bars. We discuss potential systematic uncertainties in the mass-loss determinations to explain our results. However, if further scrutinization of these findings point towards an intrinsic cause for this unexpected sub-SMC mass-loss behavior, implications would include a higher than anticipated number of Wolf-Rayet stars and Ib/Ic supernovae in low-metallicity environments, but a reduced number of long-duration gamma-ray bursts produced through a single-star evolutionary channel.

The temperatures of red supergiants (RSGs) are expected to depend on metallicity (Z) in such a way that lower-Z RSGs are warmer. In this work, we investigate the Z-dependence of the Hayashi limit by analysing RSGs in the low-Z galaxy Wolf-Lundmark-Mellote (WLM), and compare with the RSGs in the higher-Z environments of the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) and Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). We determine the effective temperature ($T_{\textrm{eff}}$) of each star by fitting their spectral energy distributions, as observed by VLT+SHOOTER, with MARCS model atmospheres. We find average temperatures of $…
Metal-poor massive stars dominate the light we observe from star-forming dwarf galaxies and may have produced the bulk of energetic photons that reionized the universe at high redshift. Yet, the rarity of observations of individual O stars below the $20\%$ solar metallicity ($Z_\odot$) of the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) hampers our ability to model the ionizing fluxes of metal-poor stellar populations. We present new Hubble Space Telescope far-ultraviolet (FUV) spectra of three O-dwarf stars in the galaxies Leo P ($3\%\,Z_\odot$), Sextans A ($6\%\,Z_\odot$), and WLM ($14\%\,Z_\odot$). We quan…
Massive stars are among the main cosmic engines driving the evolution of star-forming galaxies. Their powerful ionising radiation and stellar winds inject a large amount of energy in the interstellar medium. Furthermore, mass-loss ($\dot{M}$) through radiatively driven winds plays a key role in the evolution of massive stars. Even so, the wind mass-loss prescriptions used in stellar evolution models, population synthesis, and stellar feedback models often disagree with mass-loss rates empirically measured from the UV spectra of low metallicity massive stars. The most massive young star cluster…
New time-series VI CCD photometry of the globular cluster NGC 6362 is studied with the aim of estimating the reddening, mean metallicity and distance of the cluster from its population of RR Lyrae stars. The Fourier decomposition of carefully selected single-mode RR Lyrae light curves, and the use of well-established semi-empirical calibrations and revised zero points, lead to the values of [Fe/H]UVES =1:066 +// 0:126 and -1:08 +/- 0:16 and the distance 7:93 +/- 0:32 and 8:02 +/- 0:15 kpc from the RRab and RRc stars respectively. The distribution of RR Lyrae stars in the horizontal branch show…

NGC 6388 is one of the most massive Galactic globular clusters (GC) and it is an old, metal-rich, Galactic bulge cluster. By exploiting previous spectroscopic observations we were able to bypass the uncertainties in membership related to the strong field stars contamination. We present the abundance analysis of 12 new giant stars with UVES spectra and 150 giants with GIRAFFE spectra acquired at the ESO-VLT. We derived radial velocities, atmospheric parameters and iron abundances for all stars. When combined to previous data, we obtain a grand total of 185 stars homogeneously analysed in NGC 63…
The view of globular clusters (GCs) as simple systems continues to unravel, revealing complex objects hosting multiple chemical peculiarities. Using differential abundance analysis, we probe the chemistry of the Type I GC, NGC 288 and the Type II GC, NGC 362 at the 2\% level for the first time. We measure 20 elements and find differential measurement uncertainties on the order 0.01-0.02 dex in both clusters. The smallest uncertainties are measured for Fe I in both clusters, with an average uncertainty of $\sim$0.013 dex. Dispersion in the abundances of Na, Al, Ti I, Ni, Fe I, Y, Zr, Ba and Nd …
We present and discuss radial velocity and the very first metallicity measurements for nine evolved stars in the poorly known old open cluster NGC 7762. We isolated eight radial velocity cluster members and one interloper. Radial velocities are in good agreement with previous studies. NGC 7762 turns out to be of solar metallicity within the uncertainties ([Fe/H]=0.04$\pm$0.12). For this metallicity, the cluster age is 2.5$\pm$0.2 Gyr, and falls in a age range where only a few old open clusters are known. With respect to previous studies, we find a larger distance, implying the cluster to be lo…
Stars in massive star clusters exhibit intrinsic variations in some light elements (MPs) that are difficult to explain in a coherent formation scenario. In recent years, HST photometry has led to the characterisation of the global properties of th MPs in an unparalleled level of detail. In particular, the colour-colour diagrams known as chromosome maps have been proven to be very efficient at separating cluster stars with field-like metal abundance distribution (1P) from object with distinctive light-element abundance anti-correlations (2P). The unexpected wide colour ranges covered by the 1P …
Recent work has used spectra of about 5000 stars in NGC 6397 that were extracted from a MUSE mosaic to determine the atmospheric parameters for these stars by fitting the spectra against the Goettingen Spectral Library. A significant change in metallicity between the turn off and the red giant branch was found and was discussed as a possible manifestation of predicted effects of atomic diffusion. However, the small amplitude of the effect and inconsistency with earlier measurements call for more attention before this result is interpreted. Systematic effects due to the interpolation or to the …
NGC 796 is a massive young cluster located 59 kpc from us in the diffuse intergalactic medium of the 1/5-1/10 $Z_{\odot}$ Magellanic Bridge, allowing to probe variations in star formation and stellar evolution processes as a function of metallicity in a resolved fashion, providing a link between resolved studies of nearby solar-metallicity and unresolved distant metal-poor clusters located in high-redshift galaxies. In this paper, we present adaptive optics $gri$H$α$ imaging of NGC 796 (at 0.5", which is ~0.14 pc at the cluster distance) along with optical spectroscopy of two bright members to…
We present chemical abundances for 17 elements in a sample of 11 red giant branch stars in NGC 6362 from UVES spectra. NGC 6362 is one of the least massive globulars where multiple populations have been detected, yet its detailed chemical composition has not been investigated so far. NGC 6362 turns out to be a metal-intermediate ([Fe/H]=-1.07\pm0.01 dex) cluster, with its α- and Fe-peak elements content compatible with that observed in clusters with similar metallicity. It also displays an enhancement in its s-process element abundances. Among the light elements involved in the multiple popula…
Globular Clusters (GCs) are now well known to almost universally show multiple popu-lations (MPs). The HST UV Legacy Survey of a large number of Galactic GCs in UV filters optimized to explore MPs finds that a small fraction of GCs, termed Type II, also display more complex, anomalous behavior. Several well-studied Type II GCs show intrinsic Fe abundance variations, suggesting that the other, less well-studied, Type II GCs should also exhibit similar behavior. Our aim is to perform the first detailed metallicity analysis of NGC 1261, an intermediate mass Type II GC, in order to determine if th…
The Hubble Space Telescope photometric survey of Galactic globular clusters (GCs) has revealed a peculiar "chromosome map" for NGC6934. Besides a typical sequence, similar to that observed in Type I GCs, NGC 6934 displays additional stars on the red side, analogous to the anomalous, Type II GCs, as defined in our previous work. We present a chemical abundance analysis of four red giants in this GC. Two stars are located on the chromosome map sequence common to all GCs, and another two on the additional sequence. We find: (i) star-to-star Fe variations, with the two anomalous stars being enrich…
