We present the 0.5 - 50 keV Suzaku broad-band X-ray spectral study of the Compton-thick AGN in NGC 5135. The Suzaku observation provides the first detection of NGC 5135 above 10 keV that allowed us, for the first time, to estimate the absorbing column density, the intrinsic X-ray luminosity, the strength of the reflection component and the viewing angle of the torus for this AGN. The 0.5 - 10 keV spectrum of NGC 5135 is characterized by the standard components for a Compton-thick source: a scattered continuum, a prominent Fe Kα emission line (EW ~ 2.1 keV) and a soft excess. At higher energies (E > 10 keV) the intrinsic AGN continuum shows up, implying an absorbing column density of the order of ~ 2.5 \times 10^24 cm^-2 and the intrinsic 2.0 - 10 keV X-ray luminosity of ~ 1.8 \times 10^43 erg s^-1. Assuming a toroidal geometry of the reprocessing material we show that an edge-on view of the obscuring torus is preferred in this source.
An enigmatic group of objects, unabsorbed Seyfert 2s may have intrinsically weak broad line regions, obscuration in the line of sight to the BLR but not to the X-ray corona, or so much obscuration that the X-ray continuum is completely suppressed and the observed spectrum is actually scattered into the line of sight from nearby material. NGC 3660 has been shown to have weak broad optical/near infrared lines, no obscuration in the soft X-ray band, and no indication of "changing look" behavior. The only previous hard X-ray detection of this source by Beppo-SAX seemed to indicate that the source …
We present an analysis of a sample of Seyfert 1 galaxies observed with Suzaku. The aim of this work is to examine critically the evidence for a relativistic Fe K alpha line in the X-ray spectra of these AGN. The sample was compiled from those sources in which a relativistic component was missing in at least one XMM-Newton observation. We analysed the Suzaku spectra of these objects in order to have more constraints on the high energy emission, including the Compton reflection hump. The results show that the relativistic Fe K alpha line is detected (at >95% confidence) in all sources observed w…
We present a uniform broadband X-ray (0.5-100.0 keV) spectral analysis of 12 Swift/Burst Alert Telescope (BAT) selected Compton-thick ($\log N_{\mathrm{H}}/\mathrm{cm}^{-2} \geq 24$) Active Galactic Nuclei (CTAGNs) observed with Suzaku. The Suzaku data of 3 objects are published here for the first time. We fit the Suzaku and Swift spectra with models utilizing an analytic reflection code and those utilizing the Monte Carlo based model from an AGN torus by Ikeda et al. 2009. The main results are as follows. (1) The estimated intrinsic luminosity of a CTAGN strongly depends on the model; applyin…
A 2012 Suzaku observation of the Seyfert 1.5 galaxy Markarian 530 was analysed and found to exhibit two distinct modes of variability, which were found to be independent from one another. Firstly, the spectrum undergoes a smooth transition from a soft to a hard spectrum. Secondly, the spectrum displays more rapid variability seemingly confined to a very narrow energy band (~ 1-3 keV). Three physical models (blurred reflection, partial covering, and soft Comptonisation) were explored to characterise the average spectrum of the observation as well as the spectral state change. All three models w…
A sample of narrow-line (NLS1) and broad-line Seyfert 1 (BLS1) galaxies observed with Suzaku is presented. The final sample consists of 22 NLS1s and 47 BLS1s, for a total of 69 AGN that are all at low redshift (z<0.5) and exhibit low host galaxy column densities (<10^22 cm^-2). The average spectrum for each object is fit with a toy model to characterise important parameters, including the photon index, soft excess, Compton hump (or hard excess), narrow iron line strength, luminosity and X-ray Eddington ratio (L_x/L_Edd). We confirm previous findings that NLS1s have steeper power laws and highe…
A sample of 22 narrow-line Seyfert 1 (NLS1) and 47 broad-line Seyfert 1 (BLS1) galaxies observed with Suzaku is used to examine the Fe K band properties of each group. Three different models are used to examine the presence of: narrow neutral Fe Ka line at 6.4 keV and ionised Fe xxv and Fe xxvi emission lines (model A); a broad emission feature at around 6 - 7 keV (model B); and an absorption edge at 7.1 keV (model C). In all three models, the neutral Fe Ka line is weaker (lower luminosity and equivalent width) in NLS1s than in BLS1s. Model (B) also finds a more significant broad component (la…
We report on X-ray observations of the radio-intermediate, X-ray bright Seyfert 1 galaxy, III Zw 2, obtained with XMM-Newton, Suzaku, and Swift over the past 17-years. The source brightness varies significantly over yearly time scales, but more modestly over periods of days. Pointed observations with XMM-Newton in 2000 and Suzaku in 2011 show spectral differences despite comparable X-ray fluxes. The Suzaku spectra are consistent with a power law continuum and a narrow Gaussian emission feature at ~6.4 keV, whereas the earlier XMM-Newton spectrum requires a broader Gaussian profile and soft-exc…
From 2013 April to 2014 April, we performed an X-ray and optical simultaneous monitoring of the type 1.5 Seyfert galaxy NGC 3516. It employed Suzaku, and 5 Japanese ground-based telescopes, the Pirka, Kiso Schmidt, Nayuta, MITSuME, and the Kanata telescopes. The Suzaku observations were conducted seven times with various intervals ranging from days, weeks, to months, with an exposure of $\sim50$ ksec each. The optical $B$-band observations not only covered those of Suzaku almost simultaneously, but also followed the source as frequently as possible. As a result, NGC 3516 was found in its faint…
Utilizing an archived Suzaku data acquired on 2007 December 25 for 46 ks, X-ray spectroscopic properties of the dipping and eclipsing low-mass X-ray binary EXO 0748$-$676 were studied. At an assumed distance of 7.1 kpc, the data gave a persistent unabsorbed luminosity of $3.4\times10^{36}$ erg cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$ in 0.6 $-$ 55 keV. The source was in a relatively bright low/hard state, wherein the 0.6 $-$ 55 keV spectrum can be successfully explained by a "double-seed" Comptonization model, incorporating a common corona with an electron temperature of $\sim13$ keV. The seed photons are thought t…
2S 0921$-$630 is an eclipsing low-mass X-ray binary (LMXB) with an orbital period of $\sim$ 9 days. Past X-ray observations have revealed that 2S 0921$-$630 has an extended accretion disk corona (ADC), from which most of the X-rays from the system are emitted. We report the result of our Suzaku archival data analysis of 2S 0921$-$630. The average X-ray spectrum is reproduced with a blackbody emission ($kT_{\rm bb} \sim 0.3$ keV) Comptonized by optically-thick gas (``Compton cloud''; optical depth $τ\sim 21$) with a temperature of $\sim 2$ keV, combined with thirteen emission lines. We find tha…
We report the results obtained by a systematic, broadband (0.5--150 keV) X-ray spectral analysis of moderately obscured (Compton-thin; $22 \leq \log N_{\rm H} < 24$) active galactic nuclei (AGNs) observed with Suzaku and Swift/Burst Alert Telescope (BAT). Our sample consists of 45 local AGNs at $z<0.1$ with $\log L_{\rm 14-195\1mmkeV} > 42$ detected in the Swift/BAT 70-month survey, whose Suzaku archival data are available as of 2015 December. All spectra are uniformly fit with a baseline model composed of an absorbed cutoff power-law component, reflected emission accompanied by a narrow fluor…
The neutron star Low-Mass X-ray Binary GS 1826-238 was observed with Suzaku on 2009 October 21, for a total exposure of 103 ksec. Except for the type I bursts, the source intensity was constant to within ~10%. Combining the Suzaku XIS, HXD-PIN and HXD-GSO data, burst-removed persistent emission was detected over the 0.8-100 keV range, at an unabsorbed flux of 2.6e-9 erg/s/cm/cm. Although the implied 0.8-100 keV luminosity, 1.5e37 erg/s (assuming a distance of 7 kpc), is relatively high, the observed hard spectrum confirms that the source was in the hard state. The spectrum was successfully exp…
We test the proposed 3-component spectral model for neutron star low mass X-ray binaries using broad-band X-ray data. We have analysed 4 X-ray spectra (0.8-30 keV) obtained with Suzaku during the 2010 outburst of 4U 1608-52, which have allowed us to perform a comprehensive spectral study covering all the classical spectral states. We use a thermally Comptonized continuum component to account for the hard emission, as well as two thermal components to constrain the accretion disc and neutron star surface contributions. We find that the proposed combination of multicolor disc, single-temperature…
The recurrent soft X-ray transient Aquila X-1 was observed with Suzaku for a gross duration of 79.9 ks, on 2011 October 21 when the object was in a rising phase of an outburst. During the observation, the source exhibited a clear spectral transition from the hard state to the soft state, on a time scale of ~30 ks. Across the transition, the 0.8-10 keV XIS count rate increased by a factor ~3, that of HXD-PIN in 15-60 keV decreased by a similar factor, and the unabsorbed 0.1-100 keV luminosity increased from 3.5 times 10^37 erg/s to 5.1 times 10^37 erg/s. The broadband spectral shape changed con…
Decoupling absorption and continuum variability in the Seyfert 2 NGC 4507
This work presents the broad-band time-averaged spectral analysis of neutron star low-mass X-ray binary, XTE J1710-281 by using the Suzaku archival data. The source was in a hard or an intermediate spectral state during this observation. This is the first time that a detailed spectral analysis of the persistent emission spectra of XTE J1710-281 has been done up to 30 keV with improved constraints on its spectral parameters. By simultaneously fitting the XIS (0.6-9.0 keV) and the HXD-PIN (15.0-30.0 keV) data, we have modelled the persistent spectrum of the source with models comprising a soft c…
We present an X-ray spectral analysis of the high-mass binary 4U~1700-37 during its hard-soft state evolution. We use the BeppoSAX, Suzaku and RXTE (Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer), Suzaku and BeppoSAX observations for this investigation. We argue that the X-ray broad-band spectra during all spectral states can be adequately reproduced by a model, consisting of a low-temperature Blackbody component, two Comptonized components both due to the presence of a Compton cloud (CC) that up-scatters seed photons of $T_{s1}$~< 1.4 keV, and $T_{s2}<$1 keV, and an iron-line component. We find using this mode…
We present X-ray spectral variability studies of the ultra-luminous X-ray source (ULX) M81 X--6 using {\it Suzaku} and {\it XMM-Newton} observations performed during 2001--2015. The spectra were first fitted by a standard multi-temperature disk and a thermal Comptonization component which revealed spectral variability where the primary distinction is the change in the optical depth of the Comptonizing component, similar to what has been observed for other ULXs. We also fitted the spectra with a general relativistic accretion disk emission and a power-law component and found that it can reprodu…
