We present a new exactly solvable Hamiltonian with a separable pairing interaction and non-degenerate single-particle energies. It is derived from the hyperbolic family of Richardson-Gaudin models and possesses two free parameters, one related to an interaction cutoff and the other to the pairing strength. These two parameters can be adjusted to give an excellent reproduction of Gogny self-consistent mean-field calculations in the canonical basis.
We introduce a new class of exactly solvable boson pairing models using the technique of Richardson and Gaudin. Analytical expressions for all energy eigenvalues and first few energy eigenstates are given. In addition, another solution to Gaudin's equation is also mentioned. A relation with the Calogero-Sutherland model is suggested.
Some results for two distinct but complementary exactly solvable algebraic models for pairing in atomic nuclei are presented: 1) binding energy predictions for isotopic chains of nuclei based on an extended pairing model that includes multi-pair excitations; and 2) fine structure effects among excited $0^+$ states in $N \approx Z$ nuclei that track with the proton-neutron ($pn$) and like-particle isovector pairing interactions as realized within an algebraic $sp(4)$ shell model. The results show that these models can be used to reproduce significant ranges of known experimental data, and in so…
This work aims at a global assessment of the effect of the density dependence of the zero-range pairing interaction. Systematic Skyrme-Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov calculations with the volume, surface and mixed pairing forces are carried out to study the pairing gaps in even-even nuclei over the whole nuclear chart. Calculations are also done in coordinate representation for unstable semi-magic even-even nuclei. The calculated pairing gaps are compared with empirical values from four different odd-even staggering formulae. Calculations with the three pairing interactions are comparable for most nu…
Several approximations are tested by calculating the ground-state energy and the energy of the first excited $0^{+}$ state using an exactly solvable model with two symmetric levels interacting via a pairing force. They are the BCS approximation (BCS), Lipkin - Nogami (LN) method, random-phase approximation (RPA), quasiparticle RPA (QRPA), the renormalized RPA (RRPA), and renormalized QRPA (RQRPA). It is shown that, in the strong-coupling regime, the QRPA which neglects the scattering term of the model Hamiltonian offers the best fit to the exact solutions. A recipe is proposed using the RRPA a…
We calculate the binding energy and deformation parameter for light nuclei with and without pairing using a deformed relativistic mean field model. The role of BCS-type pairing effect is analyzed for Ne and F isotopes. The calculated odd-even staggering and the deformation parameters argue strongly against the role of pairing in the light nuclei.
We present three classes of exactly solvable models for fermion and boson systems, based on the pairing interaction. These models are solvable in any dimension. As an example we show the first results for fermion interacting with repulsive pairing forces in a two dimensional square lattice. Inspite of the repulsive pairing force the exact results show attractive pair correlations.
Slater determinants built from the single-particle wave functions of the analytically solvable Ginocchio potential are used to approximate the self-consistent Hartree-Fock solutions for the ground states of nuclei. The results indicate that the Ginocchio potential provides a good parametrization of the nuclear mean field for a wide range of nuclei, including those at the limit of particle stability.
The 1S0 pairing gap in isospin-symmetric nuclear matter and finite nuclei is investigated using the chiral nucleon-nucleon potential at the N3LO order in the two-body sector, and the N2LO order in the three-body sector. To include realistic nuclear forces in RHB (Relativistic Hartree Bolgoliubov) calculations we rely on a separable form of the pairing interaction adjusted to the bare nuclear force. The separable pairing force is applied to the analysis of pairing properties for several isotopic and isotonic chains of spherical nuclei.
Effects of pairing with isospin $T=0$ and $T=1$ are systematically studied in a model, which is based on a realistic nucleon-nucleon interaction and allows to describe the transition from infinite nuclear matter to finite nuclei. Special attention is paid to the development of the spin-orbit term in the mean field of nucleons in finite nuclei. The spin-orbit term yields a drastic suppression of $T=0$ proton-neutron pairing but does not lead to a complete disappearance in finite nuclei. Arguments are presented, why no clear evidence of $T=0$ pairing can be observed in the binding energies of fi…
We present the first study of pairing in nuclei including three-nucleon forces. We perform systematic calculations of the odd-even mass staggering generated using a microscopic pairing interaction at first order in chiral low-momentum interactions. Significant repulsive contributions from the leading chiral three-nucleon forces are found. Two- and three-nucleon interactions combined account for approximately 70% of the experimental pairing gaps, which leaves room for self-energy and induced interaction effects that are expected to be overall attractive in nuclei.
Finite temperature Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov calculations are performed in Sn isotopes using Skyrme and zero-range, density-dependent pairing interactions. For both stable and very neutron-rich nuclei the critical temperature at which pairing correlations vanish is independent of the volume/surface nature of the pairing interaction. The value of the critical temperature follows approximatively the empirical rule T$_c$ $\simeq$ 0.5 $Δ_{T=0}$ for all the calculated isotopes, showing that the critical temperature could be deduced from the pairing gap at zero temperature. On the other hand, the pair…
A brief review of recent microscopic calculations of nuclear pairing gap is given. A semi-microscopic model is suggested in which the ab-initio effective pairing interaction is supplemented with a small phenomenological addendum. It involves a parameter which is universal for all medium and heavy nuclei. Calculations for several isotopic and isotonic chains of semi-magic nuclei confirm the relevance of the model.
Particle and pairing densities in spherical even-even neutron-rich nuclei are studied within the Skyrme-Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov approach with the density-dependent pairing interaction. The influence of the density dependence of the pairing interaction on asymptotic properties of nucleonic distributions are analyzed. It is demonstrated that the size of the neutron halo dramatically depends on the behavior of the pairing interaction at low density.
By introducing the intrinsic pair operators which commute with number fluctuation operator, a new formalism is given for the number-conserving description of the pairing correlations. The difficulty in the conventional RPA treatment for pairing rotation is removed.
A cranked mean-field model with two-body T=1 and T=0 pairing interactions is presented. Approximate projection onto good particle-number is enforced via an extended Lipkin-Nogami scheme. Our calculations suggest the simultaneous presence of both T=0 and T=1 pairing modes in N=Z nuclei. The transitions between different pairing phases are discussed as a function of neutron/proton excess, T$_z$, and rotational frequency, $\hbarω$. The additional binding energy due to the T=0 $np$-pairing correlations, is suggested as a possible microscopic explanation of the Wigner energy term in even-even nucle…
The isoscalar proton-neutron pairing and isovector pairing, including both isovector proton-neutron pairing and like-particle pairing, are treated in a formalism which conserves exactly the particle number and the isospin. The formalism is designed for self-conjugate (N=Z) systems of nucleons moving in axially deformed mean fields and interacting through the most general isovector and isoscalar pairing interactions. The ground state of these systems is described by a superposition of two types of condensates, i.e., condensates of isovector quartets, built by two isovector pairs coupled to the …
The quantum deformation concept is applied to a study of isovector pairing correlations in nuclei of the mass 40<A<100 region. While the non-deformed (q -> 1) limit of the theory provides a reasonable global estimate for strength parameters of the pairing interaction, the results show that the q-deformation plays a significant role in understanding higher-order effects in the interaction.
Following a brief reminder of how the pairing model can be solved exactly, we describe how this can be used to address two interesting issues in nuclear structure physics. One concerns the mechanism for realizing superconductivity in finite nuclei and the other concerns the role of the nucleon Pauli principle in producing $sd$ dominance in interacting boson models of nuclei.
We propose a simple quartet condensation model (QCM) which describes with very high accuracy the isovector pairing correlations in self-conjugate nuclei. The quartets have an alpha-like structure and are formed by collective isovector pairs. The accuracy of the QCM is tested for N=Z nuclei for which exact shell model diagonalizations can be performed. The calculations are done with two isovector pairing forces, one extracted from standard shell model interactions and the other of seniority type, acting, respectively, upon spherical and axially-deformed single-particle states. It is shown that …
We study the isoscalar (T=0) and isovector (T=1) pairing correlations in N=Z nuclei. They are estimated from the double difference of binding energies for odd-odd N=Z nuclei and the odd-even mass difference for the neighboring odd-mass nuclei, respectively. The empirical and BCS calculations based on a T=0 and T=1 pairing model reproduce well the almost degeneracy of the lowest T=0 and T=1 states over a wide range of even-even and odd-odd N=Z nuclei. It is shown that this degeneracy is attributed to competition between the isoscalar and isovector pairing correlations in N=Z nuclei. The calcula…
We look for collective excitations originating from the strong surface pairing in unstable nuclei near the neutron drip-line. The soft dipole excitation is such a pairing mode as it exhibits a character of core-vs-dineutron motion. Possibility of the hydrodynamic phonon mode (the Anderson-Bogoliubov mode) is also discussed.
In this paper a review is given of a class of sub-models of both approaches, characterized by the fact that they can be solved exactly, highlighting in the process a number of generic results related to both the nature of pair-correlated systems as well as collective modes of motion in the atomic nucleus.
Given the spectrum of a Hamiltonian, a methodology is developed which employs the Landau-Ginsburg method for characterizing phase transitions in infinite systems to identify phase transition remnants in finite fermion systems. As a first application of our appproach we discuss pairing in finite nuclei.
We discuss effects of pairing correlation on quasi-particle resonance. We analyze in detail how the width of low-lying quasi-particle resonance is governed by the pairing correlation in the neutron drip-line nuclei. We consider the 46Si + n system to discuss low-lying p wave quasi-particle resonance. Solving the Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov equation in the coordinate space with scattering boundary condition, we calculate the phase shift, the elastic cross section, the resonance width and the resonance energy. We found that the pairing correlation has an effect to reduce the width of quasi-particle …
We show that the correlations generated in the ground state of $N=Z$ nuclei by the isovector and isoscalar pairing forces can be treated with high precision as a condensate of alpha-like quartets. To treat these correlations, the quartet condensation model (QCM) is extended to the treatment of spherically symmetric isovector $(T=1,J=0)$ and isoscalar $(T=0,J=1)$ pairing forces . Within QCM we discuss the competition between $T=1$ and $T=0$ pairing correlations in the case of a two-level model and for $N=Z$ nuclei with nucleons moving in the open shells above $^{16}$O, $^{40}$Ca and $^{100}$Sn.…
Pairing plays an essential role in describing nuclear spectra and attempts to describe it has a long history in nuclear physics. Many theoretical tools were developed to treat the pairing problem either exactly or at various levels of approximation. In this contribution to the proceedings of a conference honoring the career of Taka Otsuka, recent developments in the exact solutions of the pairing problem are described.
It is shown that in N \simeq Z nuclei the effects of isovector pairing and the symmetry energy are intimately related. In particular, in the odd-odd N = Z nuclei these two effect are essentially equal in magnitude, causing near degeneracy of the lowest T = 1 and T = 0 states and appearance of the T = 1 ground state isospin in many such nuclei. Following the earlier work of Jaenecke, it is shown that the global symmetry energy fit can be reproduced using just the excitation energies of the lowest T = 3/2 states in N = Z+1 nuclei. Similarly, the global pairing gap fit can be related to the excit…
An analytical solution of the collective Bohr equation with a Coulomb-like and a Kratzer-like $γ-$unstable potential in quadrupole deformation space is presented. Eigenvalues and eigenfunctions are given in closed form and transition rates are calculated for the two cases. The corresponding SO(2,1)$\times$SO(5) algebraic structure is discussed.
We discuss the treatment of isovector pairing by an alpha-like quartet condensate which conserves exactly the particle number, the spin and the isospin. The results show that the quartet condensate describes accurately the isovector pairing correlations in the ground state of systems with an equal number of protons and neutrons
Simple generic aspects of nuclear pairing in homogeneous medium as well as in finite nuclei are discussed. It is argued that low-energy nuclear structure is not sensitive enough to resolve fine details of nuclear nucleon-nucleon (NN) interaction in general and pairing NN interaction in particular what allows for regularization of the ultraviolet (high-momentum) divergences and a consistent formulation of effective superfluid local theory. Some aspects of (dis)entanglement of pairing with various other effects as well as forefront ideas concerning isoscalar pairing are also briefly discussed.
The problem of pairing in the $^{1}$S$_{0}$ channel of finite nuclei is revisited. In nuclear matter forces of separable form can be adjusted to the bare nuclear force, to any phenomenological pairing interaction such as the Gogny force or to exact solutions of the gap equation. In finite nuclei, because of translational invariance, such forces are no longer separable. Using well known techniques of Talmi and Moshinsky we expand the matrix elements in a series of separable terms, which converges quickly preserving translational invariance and finite range. In this way the complicated problem o…
In order to extract informations on pairing correlations in nuclei from experimental mass differences, the different contributions to odd-even mass differences are investigated within the Skyrme HFB method. In this first paper, the description of odd nuclei within HFB is discussed since it is the key point for the understanding of the above mentioned contributions. To go from an even nucleus to an odd one, the advantage of a two steps process is demonstrated and its physical content is discussed. New results concerning time-reversal symmetry breaking in odd-nuclei are also reported. PACS: 21.1…
Continuum effects in the weakly bound nuclei close to the drip-line are investigated using the analytically soluble Poschl-Teller-Ginocchio potential. Pairing correlations are studied within the Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov method. We show that both resonant and non-resonant continuum phase space is active in creating the pairing field. The influence of positive-energy phase space is quantified in terms of localizations of states within the nuclear volume.
The quantum phases of superconductivity and superfluidity are characterised mathematically by the Yang concept of Off-Diagonal Long Range Order (ODLRO), related to the existence of a large eigenvalue of the density matrix. We analyse how the Yang criterion applies for various Hamiltonians commonly employed to describe superfluid-type correlations in atomic nuclei. For like-particle pairing Hamiltonians the behaviour of the largest eigenvalue of two-body density matrix shows a clear evidence for a transition between a normal to a paired phase. However, this is not the case for the isoscalar pro…
The BCS and HFB theories which can accommodate the pairing correlations in the ground states of atomic nuclei are presented. As an application of the pairing theories, we investigate the spatial extension of weakly bound Ne and C isotopes by taking into account the pairing correlation with the Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov (HFB) method and a 3-body model, respectively. We show that the odd-even staggering in the reaction cross sections of $^{30,31,32}$Ne and $^{14,15,16}$C are successfully reproduced, and thus the staggering can be attributed to the unique role of pairing correlations in nuclei far …
The odd-even mass staggering in nuclei is analyzed in the context of self-consistent mean-field calculations, for spherical as well as for deformed nuclei. For these nuclei, the respective merits of the energy differences $Δ^{(3)}$ and $Δ^{(5)}$ to extract both the pairing gap and the time-reversal symmetry breaking effect at the same time are extensively discussed. The usual mass formula $Δ^{(3)}$, is shown to contain additional mean-field contributions when realistic pairing is used in the calculation. A simple tool is proposed in order to remove time-reversal symmetry breaking effects from …
We perform Shell Model Monte Carlo calculations of selected N=Z pf-shell nuclei with a schematic hamiltonian containing isovector pairing and quadrupole-quadrupole interactions. Compared to realistic interactions, this hamiltonian does not give rise to the SMMC ``sign problem'', while at the same time resembles essential features of the realistic interactions. We study pairing correlations in the ground states of N=Z nuclei and investigate the thermal dependence of selected observables for the odd-odd nucleus Co54 and the even-even nuclei Zn60 and Ni60. Comparison of the present results to tho…
We present an overview of the Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov (HFB) theory of nucleonic superfluidity for finite nuclei. After introducing basic concepts related to pairing correlations, we show how the correlated pairs are incorporated into the HFB wave function. Thereafter, we present derivation and structure of the HFB equations within the superfluid nuclear density functional formalism and discuss several aspects of the theory, including the unitarity of the Bogoliubov transformation in truncated single-particle and quasiparticle spaces, form of the pairing functional, structure of the HFB continu…
Neutron rich Zr nuclei with number of neutrons between $N$= 50 and 82 are investigated in the relativistic mean field approach in co-ordinate space. The resonant levels in the positive energy continuum have been explicitly included in the calculation. Odd nuclei have been treated in the blocking approximation. Our calculation indicates that the dripline for odd mass isotopes is far away from that for the even mass ones. Pairing interaction plays a significant role in stabilizing the even isotopes, thus extending the dripline for them.
Exotic and drip-line nuclei as well as nuclei immersed in a low density gas of neutrons in the outer crust of neutron stars are systematically investigated with respect to their neutron pairing properties. This is done using Skyrme density-functional and different pairing forces such as a density-dependent contact interaction and a separable form of a finite-range Gogny interaction. Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov and BCS theories are compared. It is found that neutron pairing is reduced towards the drip line while overcast by strong shell effects. Furthermore resonances in the continuum can have an i…
The influence of particle-phonon coupling on pairing correlations in nuclei is studied by solving the Dyson equation including the anomalous (pairing) Green function. We develop the formalism for solving the equation with the minimum of approximations. The solution of the Dyson equation is compared with the diagonalization of particle-phonon coupled Hamiltonian in a small space. This comparison reveals that the effect of many-phonon states is incorporated in the Dyson equation. We calculate the pairing gap of the neutron in 120Sn. We compare analytically the present method with a simpler treat…
A scheme for treating the pairing of nucleons in terms of generators of Quantum Group SU_{q}(2) is presented. The possible applications to nucleon pairs in a single orbit, multishell case, pairing vibrations and superconducting nuclei are discussed. The formalism for performing BCS calculations with q-deformed nucleon pairs is constructed and the role played by deformation parameter q analyzed in the context of nucleons in a single orbit and for Sn Isotopes.
Thermal behavior of isoscalar and isovector proton-neutron (pn) pairing energies at finite temperature are investigated by the shell model calculations. These pn pairing energies can be estimated by double differences of "thermal" energies which are extended from the double differences of binding energies as the indicators of pn pairing energies at zero temperature. We found that the delicate balance between isoscalar and isovector pn pairing energies at zero temperature disappears at finite temperature. When temperature rises, while the isovector pn pairing energy decreases, the isoscalar pn …
A mean-field plus pairing model for atomic nuclei in the Fe region was studied using a finite-temperature quantum Monte-Carlo method. We present results for thermodynamical quantities such as the internal energy and the specific heat. These results give indications of a phase transition related to the pairing amongst nucleons, around temperatures of 0.7 MeV. The influence of the residual interaction and of the size of the model space on the nuclear level densities is discussed too.
We develop a relativistic mean field (RMF) description of deformed nuclei with the pairing correlations in the BCS approximation. The treatment of the pairing correlations for nuclei with the Fermi surface being close to the threshold of unbound states needs a special attention. To this end, we take the delta function interaction for the pairing interaction with the hope to pick up those states with the wave function being concentrated in the nuclear region and perform the standard BCS approximation for the single particle states generated by the RMF theory with deformation. We apply the RMF +…
Isospin singlet (pn) pairing as well as quartetting in nuclei is expected to arise near the symmetry line $N=Z$. Empirical values can be deduced from the nuclear binding energies applying special filters. Within the local density approximation, theoretical estimates for finite nuclei are obtained from results for the condensation energy of asymmetric nuclear matter. It is shown that the isospin singlet condensation energy drops down abruptly for |N-Z|~4 for medium nuclei in the region A=40. Furthermore, alpha-like quartetting and the influence of excitations are discussed.
The evolution of the pairing correlations from closed shell to middle shell nuclei is analyzed with a Finite Range Density Dependent interaction in the Sn isotopes. As theoretical approaches we use the Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov, the Lipkin-Nogami, their particle number projected counterparts and the full variation after particle number projection method. We find that whereas all approaches succeed rather well in the description of the total energy they differ significantly in the pairing correlation content of the wave functions. The description of the evolution from the weak to the strong pairi…
We study the interplay between the isoscalar (T=0) and isovector (T=1) pairing correlations in N=Z odd-odd nuclei from 14N to 58Cu by using three-body model calculations. The strong spin-triplet T=0 pairing correlation dominates in the ground state of 14N, 18F, 30P, and 58Cu with the spin-parity J^π=1+, which can be well reproduced by the present calculations. The magnetic dipole and Gamow-Teller transitions are found to be strong in 18F and 42Sc as a manifestation of SU(4) symmetry in the spin-isospin space. We also discuss the spin-quadrupole transitions in these nuclei.
Ground-state properties of exotic even-even nuclei with extreme neutron-to-proton ratios are described in the framework of the self-consistent mean-field theory with pairing formulated in coordinate space. This theory properly accounts for the influence of the particle continuum, which is particularly important for weakly bound systems. The pairing properties of nuclei far from stability are studied with several interactions emphasizing different aspects, such as the range and density dependence of the effective interaction. Measurable consequences of spatially extended pairing fields are pres…
The nuclear pairing condensate is expected to change character from spin-singlet to spin-triplet when the nucleus is very large and the neutron and proton numbers $Z,N$ are equal. We investigate the transition between these two phases within the framework of the Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov equations, using a zero-range interaction to generate the pairing. We confirm that extremely large nucleus would indeed favor triplet pairing condensates, with the Hamiltonian parameters taken from known systematics. The favored phase is found to depend on the specific orbitals at the Fermi energy. The smallest …
Excitation of pairing vibrations in superfluid nuclei is studied by using a kinetic model based on the Vlasov equation with pairing, derived from the time-dependent Hartree-Fock-Bogolyubov theory. The anomalous density response function is used to find the monopole pairing mode and the dynamic variation of the pairing gap associated with this mode. The spectroscopic factor for the excitation of monopole pairing vibrations in two-neutron transfer reaction is estimated. It is found that the pairing correlations give rise to the same coherent contribution to the semiclassical spectroscopic factor…
Role of pairing correlation for emergence of low-frequency vibrational excitations in neutron drip line nuclei is discussed paying special attention to neutrons with small orbital angular momentum l. Self-consistent pairing correlation in the Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov (HFB) theory causes the change of the spatial structure of the quasiparticle wave functions; "the pairing anti-halo effect" in the lower component and "the broadening effect" in the upper component. The resultant spatial distribution of the two-quasiparticle states among low-l neutrons, "the broad localization", brings about qualit…
Rotational motion of heated 72-Ge is studied within the microscopic Shell Model Monte Carlo approach. We investigate the the angular momentum alignment and nuclear pairing correlations associated with J-pi Cooper pairs as a function of the rotational frequency and temperature. The reentrance of pairing correlations with temperature is predicted at high rotational frequencies. It manifests itself through the anomalous behavior of specific heat and level density.
We analyse the contribution of isovector and isoscalar proton-neutron pairing to the binding energies of even-even nuclei with $N-Z=0,2,4$ and atomic mass $20 < A <100$. The binding energies are calculated in the mean-field approach by coupling a Skyrme-type functional to an isovector-isoscalar pairing force of zero range. The latter is treated in the framework of quartet condensation model (QCM), which conserves exactly the particle number and the isospin. The interdependence of pairing and deformation is taken into account by performing self-consistent Skyrme-HF+QCM calculations in the intri…
We present results of the Hartree-Fock-Bogolyubov calculations performed using nuclear energy density functionals based on regularized functional generators at next-to-leading and next-to-next-to-leading order. We discuss properties of binding energies and pairing gaps determined in semi-magic spherical nuclei. The results are compared with benchmark calculations performed for the functional generator SLyMR0 and functional UNEDF0.
We perform a systematic study of Gamow-Teller (GT) transitions in the 2p1f shell, using the nuclear shell model with two schematic Hamiltonians. The use of the shell model provides flexibility to analyze the role of different proton-neutron pairing modes in the presence of nuclear deformation. The schematic Hamiltonians that are used contain a quadrupole-quadrupole interaction as well as isoscalar (T=0) and isovector (T=1) pairing interactions, but differ in the single particle energies. The objective of the work is to observe the behavior of GT transitions in different isoscalar and isovector…
We describe the ground state of the isovector pairing Hamiltonian in self-conjugate nuclei by a product of collective quartets of different structure built from two neutrons and two protons coupled to total isospin T=0. The structure of the collective quartets is determined by an iterative variational procedure based on a sequence of diagonalizations of the pairing Hamiltonian in spaces of reduced size. The accuracy of the quartet model is tested for N=Z nuclei carrying valence nucleons outside the $^{16}$O, $^{40}$Ca, and $^{100}$Sn cores. The comparison with the exact solutions of the pairin…
Nuclear pairing properties are studied within an approach that includes the quasiparticle-number fluctuation (QNF) and coupling to the quasiparticle-pair vibrations at finite temperature and angular momentum. The formalism is developed to describe non-collective rotations about the symmetry axis. The numerical calculations are performed within a doubly-folded equidistant multilevel model as well as several realistic nuclei. The results obtained for the pairing gap, total energy and heat capacity show that the QNF smoothes out the sharp SN phase transition and leads to the appearance of a therm…
