In this paper, we show that the spin-0 gravitons appearing in Horava-Lifshitz gravity without the projectability condition can be eliminated by extending the gauge symmetries of the foliation-preserving diffeomorphisms to include a local U(1) symmetry. As a result, the problems of stability, ghost, strong coupling, and different speeds in the gravitational sector are automatically resolved. In addition, with the detailed balance condition softly breaking, the number of independent coupling constants can be significantly reduced (from more than 70 down to 15), while the theory is still UV complete and possesses a healthy IR limit, whereby the prediction powers of the theory are considerably improved. The strong coupling problem in the matter sector can be cured by introducing an energy scale $M_{*}$, so that $M_{*} < Λ_ω$, where $M_{*}$ denotes the suppression energy of high order derivative terms, and $Λ_ω$ the would-be strong coupling energy scale.
In this paper, we study inflation in the general covariant Hořava-Lifshitz gravity without the projectability condition. We write down explicitly the equations of the linear scalar perturbations of the FRW universe for a single scalar field without specifying to any gauge. Applying these equations to a particular gauge, we are able to obtain a master equation of the perturbations, in contrast to all the other versions of the theory without the projectability condition. This is because in the current version of the theory it has the same degree of freedom of general relativity. To calculate the…
We study graviton propagations of scalar, vector, and tensor modes in the deformed Hořava-Lifshitz gravity ($λR$-model) without projectability condition. The quadratic Lagrangian is invariant under diffeomorphism only for $λ=1$ case, which contradicts to the fact that $λ$ is irrelevant to a consistent Hamiltonian approach to the $λR$ model. In this case, as far as scalar propagations are concerned, there is no essential difference between deformed Hořava-Lifshitz gravity ($λR$-model) and general relativity. This implies that there are two degrees of freedom for a massless graviton without Hořa…
We consider an extended theory of Horava-Lifshitz gravity with the detailed balance condition softly breaking, but without the projectability condition. With the former, the number of independent coupling constants is significantly reduced. With the latter and by extending the original foliation-preserving diffeomorphism symmetry $ {Diff}(M, {\cal{F}})$ to include a local U(1) symmetry, the spin-0 gravitons are eliminated. Thus, all the problems related to them disappear, including the instability, strong coupling, and different speeds in the gravitational sector. When the theory couples to a …
In this paper we seek static spherically symmetric solutions of Horava-Lifshitz-like gravity with projectability condition. We consider the most general form of gravity action without detailed balance, and require the spacetime metric to respect the projectability condition. We find that for any value of $λ$, it may exists the solutions of topology $R\times M_3$, where $R$ is the time direction and $M_3$ is a three-dimensional maximally symmetric space depending on the value of cosmological constant and the potential of the action. Besides, in the UV region where $λ\neq 1$, we find Minkowski o…
In the present work, we search static charged black hole solutions to Hořava-Lifshitz gravity with or without projectability condition. We consider the most general form of action which electromagnetic field couples with Hořava-Lifshitz gravity. With the projectability condition, we find dS-Reissner-Nordstrom black hole solution in Painlevé-Gullstrand type coordinates in the IR region and a de-Sitter space-time solution in the UV region. Without the projectability condition, in the IR region, we find an especial static charged black hole solution.
Horava-Lifshitz gravity with "detailed balance" but without the projectability assumption is discussed. It is shown that detailed balance is quite efficient in limiting the proliferation of couplings in Horava-Lifshitz gravity, and that its implementation without the projectability assumption leads to a theory with sensible dynamics. However, the (bare) cosmological constant is restricted to be large and negative.
We systematically study spherically symmetric static spacetimes filled with a fluid in the Horava-Lifshitz theory of gravity with the projectability condition, but without the detailed balance. We establish that when the spacetime is spatially Ricci flat the unique vacuum solution is the de Sitter Schwarzshcild solution, while when the spacetime has a nonzero constant curvature, there exist two different vacuum solutions; one is an (Einstein) static universe, and the other is a new spacetime. This latter spacetime is maximally symmetric and not flat. We find all the perfect fluid solutions for…
In the Horava-Lifshitz theory of quantum gravity, two conditions -- detailed balance and projectability -- are usually assumed. The breaking of projectability simplifies the theory, but it leads to serious problems with the theory. The breaking of detailed balance leads to a more complicated form of the theory, but it appears to resolve some of the problems. Sotiriou, Visser and Weinfurtner formulated the most general theory of Horava-Lifshitz type without detailed balance. We compute the linear scalar perturbations of the FRW model in this form of HL theory. We show that the higher-order curv…
The stability of de Sitter spacetime in Horava-Lifshitz theory of gravity with projectability but without detailed balance condition is studied. It is found that, in contrast to the case of the Minkowski background, the spin-0 graviton now is stable for any given $ξ$, and free of ghost for $ξ\le 0$ in the infrared limit, where $ξ$ is the dynamical coupling constant.
Singularities in $(3+1)$-dimensional Horava-Lifshitz (HL) theory of gravity are studied. These singularities can be divided into scalar, non-scalar curvature, and coordinate singularities. Because of the foliation-preserving diffeomorphisms of the theory, the number of scalars that can be constructed from the extrinsic curvature tensor $K_{ij}$, the 3-dimensional Riemann tensor and their derivatives is much large than that constructed from the 4-dimesnional Riemann tensor and its derivatives in general relativity (GR). As a result, even for the same spacetime, it may be singular in the HL theo…
We obtain the static spherically symmetric vacuum solutions of Horava-Lifshitz gravity theory, imposing the detailed balance condition only in the UV limit. We find the solutions in two different coordinate systems, the Painlevé-Gullstrand coordinates and the Poincare coordinates, to examine the consequences of imposing the projectability condition. The solutions in two coordinate systems are distinct due to the non-relativistic nature of the HL gravity. In the Painleve-Gullstrand coordinates complying with the projectability condition, the solution involves an additional integration constant …
We attempt a critical reconsideration of "detailed balance" as a principle that can be used to restrict the proliferation of couplings in Horava-Lifshitz gravity. We re-examine the shortcomings that have been usually associated with it in the literature and we argue that easy remedies can be found for all of them within the framework of detailed balance, and that the most persistent of them are actually related to projectability. We show that, once projectability is abandoned, detailed balance reduces the number of independent couplings by roughly an order of magnitude and imposes only one res…
We study perturbations of a scalar field cosmology in Horava-Lifshitz gravity, adopting the most general setup without detailed balance but with the projectability condition. We derive the generalized Klein-Gordon equation, which is sixth-order in spatial derivatives. Then we investigate scalar field perturbations coupled to gravity in a flat Friedmann-Robertson-Walker background. In the sub-horizon regime, the metric and scalar field modes have independent oscillations with different frequencies and phases except in particular cases. On super-horizon scales, the perturbations become adiabatic…
In this paper, we consider two different issues, stability and strong coupling, raised lately in the newly-proposed Horava-Lifshitz (HL) theory of quantum gravity with projectability condition. We find that all the scalar modes are stable in the de Sitter background, due to two different kinds of effects, one from high-order derivatives of the spacetime curvature, and the other from the exponential expansion of the de Sitter space. Combining these effects properly, one can make the instability found in the Minkowski background never appear even for small-scale modes, provided that the IR limit…
We investigate the linear cosmological perturbations of Hořava-Lifshitz gravity in a FRW universe without any matter. Our results show that a new gauge invariant dynamical scalar mode emerges, due to the gauge transformation under the "foliation-preserving" diffeomorphism and "projectability condition", and it can produce a scale invariant power spectrum. In the infrared regime with $λ=1$, the dynamical scalar degree of freedom turns to be a non-dynamical one at the linear order level.
Inclusion of $f(R)$ term in the action of Horava-Lifshitz quantum gravity with projectability but without detailed balance condition is investigated, where $R$ denotes the 3-spatial dimensional Ricci scalar. Conditions for the spin-0 graviton to be free of ghosts and instability are studied. The requirement that the theory reduce to general relativity in the IR makes the scalar mode unstable in the Minkowski background but stable in the de Sitter. It is remarkable that the dark sector, dark matter and dark energy, of the universe has a naturally geometric origin in such a setup. Bouncing unive…
This paper is devoted to the construction of new type of f(R) theories of gravity that are based on the principle of detailed balance. We discuss two versions of these theories with and without the projectability condition.
Detailed balance and projectability conditions are two main assumptions when Horava recently formulated his theory of quantum gravity - the Horava-Lifshitz (HL) theory. While the latter represents an important ingredient, the former often believed needs to be abandoned, in order to obtain an ultraviolet stable scalar field, among other things. In this paper, because of several attractive features of this condition, we revisit it, and show that the scalar field can be stabilized, if the detailed balance condition is allowed to be softly broken. Although this is done explicitly in the non-relati…
We study cosmological vector and tensor perturbations in Horava-Lifshitz gravity, adopting the most general Sotiriou-Visser-Weinfurtner generalization without the detailed balance but with projectability condition. After deriving the general formulas in a flat FRW background, we find that the vector perturbations are identical to those given in general relativity. This is true also in the non-flat cases. For the tensor perturbations, high order derivatives of the curvatures produce effectively an anisotropic stress, which could have significant efforts on the high-frequency modes of gravitatio…
We generalize recent analysis of the dynamics of point particle in Horava-Lifshitz background to the case of string probe when we replace the Hamiltonian constraint of the Polyakov string with the constraint that breaks Lorentz invariance of target space-time. Then we find corresponding Lagrangian and argue that the world-sheet theory is invariant under foliation preserving diffeomorphism. Finally we discuss the Hamiltonian dynamics and show that this is well defined on condition that the world-sheet lapse function obeys the projectability condition.
There are at least four versions of Horava-Lishitz gravity in the literature. We consider the version without the detailed balance condition with the projectability condition and address one aspect of the theory: avoidance of caustics for constant time hypersurfaces. We show that there is no caustic with plane symmetry in the absence of matter source if λ\ne 1. If λ=1 is a stable IR fixed point of the renormalization group flow then λis expected to deviate from 1 near would-be caustics, where the extrinsic curvature increases and high-energy corrections become important. Therefore, the absence…
We consider the branch of the projectable Horava-Lifshitz model which exhibits ghost instabilities in the low energy limit. It turns out that, due to the Lorentz violating structure of the model and to the presence of a finite strong coupling scale, the vacuum decay rate into photons is tiny in a wide range of phenomenologically acceptable parameters. The strong coupling scale, understood as a cutoff on ghosts' spatial momenta, can be raised up to $Λ\sim 10$ TeV. At lower momenta, the projectable Horava-Lifshitz gravity is equivalent to General Relativity supplemented by a fluid with a small p…
We find exact static stringy solutions of Horava-Lifshitz gravity with the projectability condition but imposing the detailed balance condition near the UV fixed point, and propose a method on constraining the possible pattern of flows in Horava-Lifshitz gravity by using the obtained classical solutions. In the obtained vacuum solutions, the parameters related to the speed of the graviton and the coefficients of quartic spatial derivative terms lead to intriguing effects: the change of graviton speed yields a surplus angle and the quartic derivatives make the square of effective electric charg…
Horava gravity breaks Lorentz symmetry by introducing a dynamical timelike scalar field (the khronon), which can be used as a preferred time coordinate (thus selecting a preferred space-time foliation). Adopting the khronon as the time coordinate, the theory is invariant only under time reparametrizations and spatial diffeomorphisms. In the infrared limit, this theory is sometimes referred to as khronometric theory. Here, we explicitly construct a generalization of khronometric theory, which avoids the propagation of Ostrogradski modes as a result of a suitable degeneracy condition (although s…
We investigate static spherically symmetric vacuum solutions in the IR limit of projectable nonrelativistic quantum gravity, including the renormalisable quantum gravity recently proposed by Hořava. It is found that the projectability condition plays an important role. Without the cosmological constant, the spacetime is uniquely given by the Schwarzschild solution. With the cosmological constant, the spacetime is uniquely given by the Kottler (Schwarzschild-(anti) de Sitter) solution for the entirely vacuum spacetime. However, in addition to the Kottler solution, the static spherical and hyper…
In this paper, we study non-Gaussianity generated by a single scalar field in slow-roll inflation in the framework of the non-relativistic general covariant Hořava-Lifshitz theory of gravity with the projectability condition and an arbitrary coupling constant $λ$, where $λ$ characterizes the deviation of the theory from general relativity (GR) in the infrared. We find that the leading effect of self-interaction, in contrary to the case of minimal scenario of GR, is in general of the order $\hatα_{n} ε^{3/2}$, where $ε$ is a slow-roll parameter, and $\hatα_{n} (n = 3, 5)$ are the dimensionless …
We study a version of the recently proposed modified $F(R)$ Hořava-Lifshitz gravity that abandons the projectability condition of the lapse variable. We discovered that the projectable version of this theory has a consistent Hamiltonian structure, and that the theory has interesting cosmological solutions which can describe the eras of accelerated expansion of the universe in a unified manner. The usual Hořava-Lifshitz gravity is a special case of our theory. Hamiltonian analysis of the non-projectable theory, however, shows that this theory has serious problems. These problems are compared wi…
We study gravitational collapse of a spherical fluid in nonrelativistic general covariant theory of the Hořava-Lifshitz gravity with the projectability condition and an arbitrary coupling constant $λ$, where $|λ- 1|$ characterizes the deviation of the theory from general relativity in the infrared limit. The junction conditions across the surface of a collapsing star are derived under the (minimal) assumption that the junctions be mathematically meaningful in terms of distribution theory. When the collapsing star is made of a homogeneous and isotropic perfect fluid, and the external region is …
We find stable singularity-free cosmological solutions in non-flat Friedmann-Lemaître-Robertson-Walker (FLRW) spacetime in the context of Hořava-Lifshitz (HL) theory. Although we encounter the negative squared effective masses of the scalar perturbations in the original HL theory, the behaviors can be remedied by relaxing the projectability condition. In our analysis, the effects from the background dynamics are taken into account as well as the sign of the coefficients in the quadratic action for perturbations. More specifically, we give further classification of the gradient stability/instab…
We study spherically symmetric, stationary vacuum configurations in general covariant theory (U(1) extension) of Hořava-Lifshitz gravity with the projectability condition and an arbitrary coupling constant $λ$, and obtain all the solutions in closed forms. If the gauge field $A$ and the Newtonian prepotential $φ$ do not directly couple to matter fields, the theory is inconsistent with solar system tests for $λ\not=1$, no matter how small $|λ-1|$ is. This is shown to be true also with the most general ansatz of spherical (but not necessarily stationary) configurations. Therefore, to be consiste…
There has been a significant surge of interest in Horava's model for 3+1 dimensional quantum gravity, this model being based on anisotropic scaling at a z=3 Lifshitz point. Horava's model, and its variants, show dramatically improved ultra-violet behaviour at the cost of exhibiting violation of Lorentz invariance at ultra-high momenta. Following up on our earlier note, [arXiv:0904.4464 [hep-th]], we discuss in more detail our variant of Horava's model. In contrast to Horava's original model, we abandon "detailed balance" and restore parity invariance. We retain, however, Horava's "projectabili…
The Wheeler-DeWitt equation for a Kantowski-Sachs metric in Hořava-Lifshitz gravity with a set of coordinates in minisuperspace that obey a generalized uncertainty principle is studied. We first study the equation coming from a set of coordinates that obey the usual uncertainty principle and find analytic solutions in the infrared as well as a particular ultraviolet limit that allows us to find the solution found in Hořava-Lifshitz gravity with projectability and with detailed balance but now as an approximation of the theory without detailed balance. We then consider the coordinates that obey…
We propose the most general modified first-order Hořava-Lifshitz (HL) gravity, whose action does not contain time derivatives higher than the second order. The Hamiltonian structure of this theory is studied in all the details in the case of the spatially-flat FRW space-time, demonstrating many of the features of the general theory. It is shown that, with some plausible assumptions, including the projectability of the lapse function, this model is consistent. As a large class of such theories, the modified HL $F(R)$ gravity is introduced. The study of its ultraviolet properties shows that its …
In this paper it is studied the propagator for the modified theory of gravity proposed by Ho\vrava. We first calculate the propagator in the $λ=1$ case and show that the main poles that arise correspond to the spin two particle and scalar particle, already known in the literature. The presence of a bad ultraviolet behaving term spoils renormalizability of the theory but it is eliminated by imposing the detailed balance condition, although just a soft version of this condition is actually needed. The problems of a negative mass term and a residue with undefined sign, which is due to the presenc…
In this work we study a Horava-like five-dimensional model in the context of braneworld theory. To begin with, the equations of motion of such model are obtained and, within the realm of warped geometry, we show that the model is consistent if and only if $λ$ takes its relativistic value 1. Furthermore, since the first derivative of the warp factor is discontinuous over the branes, we show that the elimination of problematic terms involving the square of the warp factor second order derivatives are eliminated by imposing detailed balance condition in the bulk. Afterwards, the Israel's junction…
