Broadband spectral energy distributions (SEDs) are complied from literature for 24 TeV BL Lac objects. Two SEDs, which are identified as low and high states with their flux densities at $1\ {\rm TeV}$ ($F_{1 TeV}$), are available for each of 11 objects. We fit the SEDs with the single-zone synchrotron + synchrotron-self-Compton (SSC) model and determine the physical parameters of the jets. The model well represents the SEDs, and the observed relation between two peak frequencies $ν_{\rm s}$ and $ν_{\rm c}$ also favors the model. It is found that the break of the electron spectrum ($γ_{\rm b}$) is different among sources, but magnetic field strength distributes narrowly in $0.1-0.6 $ G, indicating that the shocks in the jets are significantly different among sources and the magnetic field may be independent of the shocks. The ratio of $F_{1 TeV}$ is correlated with the ratio of the $γ_{\rm b}$ in the low and high states, indicating that the relativistic shocks in the jets may be responsible for the observed flux variations and the spectral shift. The ratio of the two peak luminosities $L_{\rm c}/L_{\rm s}$ is anti-correlated with $ν_{\rm s}$ in the co-moving frame, which is possibly due to the Klein-Nishina effect. No excess in the GeV band due to the interaction between the TeV photons and the extragalactic background light is observed, implying that the strength of the intergalactic magnetic field would be much larger than $ 10^{-16}$ G. An anti-correlation between jet power and the mass of the central black hole is observed, i.e., $P_{\rm jet}\propto M^{-1}_{\rm BH}$, disfavoring the scenario of a pure accretion-driven jet. We suggest that the spin energy extraction may be significant for powering jets in these sources, implying that the black holes with smaller mass may spin more rapidly.
The observations of high energy $γ$-ray emission from the Galactic center (GC) by HESS, and recently by Fermi, suggest the cosmic ray acceleration in the GC and possibly around the supermassive black hole. In this work we propose a lepton-hadron hybrid model to explain simultaneously the GeV-TeV $γ$-ray emission. Both electrons and hadronic cosmic rays were accelerated during the past activity of the GC. Then these particles would diffuse outwards and interact with the interstellar gas and background radiation field. The collisions between hadronic cosmic rays with gas is responsible to the Te…
Observations by HAWC and Milagro have detected spatially extended TeV sources surrounding middle-aged ($t\sim100-400 \,{\rm kyr}$) pulsars like Geminga and PSR B0656+14, which have been named "TeV Halos", representing very extended TeV pulsar wind nebulae (PWNe) powered by relatively old pulsars. A few more HAWC-detected sources have been suggested to be TeV halo candidates. In this paper, we search for possible GeV counterparts of three TeV halo candidates with Fermi Large Area Telescopes. We detect a new spatially extended GeV source in the vicinity of the TeV halo candidate 2HWC J1912+099, …
Recently two collaborations, Tibet and HAWC, presented new measurements of gamma-ray spectrum from Crab Nebula \cite{Amenomori:2019rjd},\cite{Abeysekara:2019edl} which continues beyond $100$ TeV. We use these data to establish two-sided constraints on parameters of Lorentz Invariance violation in quantum electrodynamics. The limits on Lorentz violating mass scale for quartic dispersion relation are $4.1\times 10^{14}\ \mbox{GeV}$ (photon splitting) and $1.9\times 10^{13}\ \mbox{GeV}$ (photon decay) for superluminal case, and $1.4\times 10^{12}$ GeV (suppression of shower formation) for sublumi…
The predictions of hadronic interaction models for cosmic-ray induced air showers contain inherent uncertainties due to limitations of available accelerator data and theoretical understanding in the required energy and rapidity regime. Differences between models are typically evaluated in the range appropriate for cosmic-ray air shower arrays ($10^{15}$-$10^{20}$ eV). However, accurate modelling of charged cosmic-ray measurements with ground based gamma-ray observatories is becoming more and more important. We assess the model predictions on the gross behaviour of measurable air shower paramet…
Recent measurements of cosmic rays by various experiments have found that the energy spectrum of cosmic rays is harder in the TeV region than at GeV energies. The origin of the spectral hardening is not clearly understood. In this paper, we discuss the possibility that the spectral hardening might be due to the effect of re-acceleration of cosmic rays by weak shocks associated with old supernova remnants in the Galaxy.
High energy cosmic ray electrons and positrons probe the local properties of our Galaxy. In fact, electromagnetic energy losses limit the typical propagation scale of GeV-TeV electrons and positrons to a few kpc. In the diffusion model, nearby and dominant sources may produce an observable dipole anisotropy in the cosmic ray fluxes. We present a detailed study on the role of anisotropies from nearby sources in the interpretation of the observed GeV-TeV cosmic ray electron and positrons fluxes. We compute predictions for the anisotropies from known astrophysical sources as supernova remnants an…
One of the most enigmatic TeV binary systems, LS I +61$^\circ$ 303 exhibits a high degree of flux modulation from radio to TeV wavelengths over a single orbit of the binary system, once every $\sim$26.5 days. The binary system also exhibits a $\sim4.5$ year superorbital modulation in radio, X-ray and GeV emission which is yet to be seen in TeV gamma rays. LS I +61$^\circ$ 303 has been observed by VERITAS in the TeV energy range and multiwavelength partners (optical - GeV). The contemporaneous multiwavelength data sets enable searches for correlations between X-ray and TeV emission, as well as …
We present a precise measurement of the combined electron plus positron flux from 0.5 GeV to 1 TeV, based on the analysis of the data collected by the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer during the first 30 months of operations aboard the International Space Station. The statistics and the high resolution of AMS-02 detector provide a precise measurement of the flux. The flux is smooth and reveals new and distinct information. Above 30.2 GeV, the combined electron plus positron flux can be described accurately by a single power law.
The extended jets of the microquasar SS 433 have been observed in optical, radio, X-ray, and recently very-high-energy (VHE) $γ$-rays by HAWC. The detection of HAWC $γ$-rays with energies as great as 25 TeV motivates searches for high-energy $γ$-ray counterparts in the Fermi-LAT data in the 100 MeV--300 GeV band. In this paper, we report on the first-ever joint analysis of Fermi-LAT and HAWC observations to study the spectrum and location of $γ$-ray emission from SS~433. Our analysis finds common emission sites of GeV-to-TeV $γ$-rays inside the eastern and western lobes of SS 433. The total fl…
Are GeV and TeV spectra connected? the case of Galactic gamma-ray sources
The Sun is an excellent laboratory for astroparticle physics but remains poorly understood at GeV--TeV energies. Despite the immense relevance for both cosmic-ray propagation and dark matter searches, only in recent years has the Sun become a target for precision gamma-ray astronomy with the Fermi-LAT instrument. Among the most surprising results from the observations is a hard excess of GeV gamma-ray flux that strongly anti-correlates with solar activity, especially at the highest energies accessible to Fermi-LAT. Most of the observed properties of the gamma-ray emission cannot be explained b…
A number of Galactic sources emit GeV-TeV gamma rays that are produced through leptonic and/or hadronic mechanisms. Spectral analysis in this energy range is crucial in order to understand the emission mechanisms. The HAWC Gamma-Ray Observatory, with a large field of view and location at $19^\circ$ N latitude, is surveying the Galactic Plane from high Galactic longitudes down to near the Galactic Center. Data taken with partially-constructed HAWC array in 2013-2014 exhibit TeV gamma-ray emission along the Galactic Plane. A high-level analysis likelihood framework for HAWC, also presented at th…
The Fermi gamma-ray space telescope has revolutionized our understanding of the cosmic gamma-ray background radiation in the GeV band. However, investigation on the cosmic TeV gamma-ray background radiation still remains sparse. Here, we report the lower bound on the cosmic TeV gamma-ray background spectrum placed by the cumulative flux of individual detected extragalactic TeV sources including blazars, radio galaxies, and starburst galaxies. The current limit on the cosmic TeV gamma-ray background above 0.1 TeV is obtained as $2.8\times10^{-8} (E/100~{\rm GeV})^{-0.55} \exp(-E/2100~{\rm GeV})…
It has long been suggested that nearby pulsars within $\sim 1 \,{\rm kpc}$ are the leading candidate of the 10-500 GeV cosmic-ray positron excess measured by PAMELA and other experiments. The recent measurement of surface brightness profile of TeV nebulae surrounding Geminga and PSR~B0656+14 by the High-Altitude Water Cherenkov Observatory (HAWC) suggests inefficient diffusion of particles from the sources, giving rise to a debate on the pulsar interpretation of the cosmic-ray positron excess. Here we argue that GeV observations provide more direct constraints on the positron density in the Te…
In this work, we use two different methods to determine the opacity of the TeV gamma-rays caused by the extragalactic background light (EBL) via e-e+ production due to photon-photon interaction. The first method, Model-Dependent Approach, uses various EBL models for estimating the opacity as a function of the redshift and energy of the TeV photons. The second method, Model-Independent Approach, relies on using the simultaneous observations of blazars in the MeV-GeV energy range from the Fermi-LAT and in the TeV band from the ground-based gamma-ray telescopes. We make the underline assumption t…
BL Lacertae objects (BL Lacs) is the dominant population of TeV emitting blazars. In this work, we investigate whether there is any special observational properties for TeV sources. To do so, we will compare the observational properties of TeV detected BL Lacs (TeV BLs) and non-TeV detected BL Lac objects (non-TeV BLs). From the 3rd $Fermi$/LAT catalog (3FGL), we can get 662 BL Lacs, out of which, 47 are TeV BLs and 615 are non-TeV BLs. Their multi-wavelength flux densities ($F_{\rm R}$, $F_{\rm O}$, $F_{\rm X}$, $F_γ$), photon spectral indexes ($α_{\rm X}^{\rm ph}$, $α_γ^{\rm ph}$), and effec…
We report the first high-significance GeV gamma-ray detections of supernova remnants HESS J1731-347 and SN 1006, both of which have been previously detected by imaging atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes above 1 TeV. Using 8 years of Fermi Pass 8 data at energies between 1 GeV and 2 TeV, we detect emission at the position of HESS J1731-347 with a significance of $\sim 5σ$ and a spectral index of $Γ= 1.66 \pm 0.16_{\rm stat} \pm 0.12_{\rm syst}$. The hardness of the index and the good connection with the TeV spectrum of HESS J1731-347 support an association between the two sources. We also confirm…
In this paper, we compile the very-high-energy and high-energy spectral indices of 43 BL Lac objects from the literature. Based on a simple math model, $ΔΓ_{obs}=α{\rm{z}}+β$, we present evidence for the origin of an observed spectral break that is denoted by the difference between the observed very-high-energy and high-energy spectral indices, $ΔΓ_{obs}$. We find by linear regression analysis that $α\ne 0$ and $β\ne 0$. These results suggest that the extragalactic background light attenuation and the intrinsic curvature dominate on the GeV-TeV $γ$-ray energy spectral break of BL Lac objects. …
The nature of the shallow decay phase in the X-ray afterglow of the gamma-ray burst (GRB) is not yet clarified. We analyze the data of early X-ray afterglows of 26 GRBs triggered by Burst Alert Telescope onboard Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory and subsequently detected by Fermi Large Area Telescope (LAT) and/or Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes. It is found that 9 events (including 2 out of 3 very-high-energy gamma-ray events) have no shallow decay phase and that their X-ray afterglow light curves are well described by single power-law model except for the jet break at later epoch. The r…
We investigate hadronic and leptonic scenarios for the GeV--TeV gamma-ray emission from jets of the microquasar SS 433. The emission region of the TeV photons coincides with the X-ray knots, where electrons are efficiently accelerated. On the other hand, the optical high-density filaments are also located close to the X-ray knots, which may support a hadronic scenario. We calculate multi-wavelength photon spectra of the extended jet region by solving the transport equations for the electrons and protons. We find that both hadronic and leptonic models can account for the observational data, inc…
The pulsar emission mechanism in the gamma-ray energy band is poorly understood. Currently, there are several models under discussion in the pulsar community. These models can be constrained by studying the collective properties of a sample of pulsars, which became possible with the large sample of gamma-ray pulsars discovered by the Fermi Large Area Telescope (Fermi-LAT). In this paper we develop a new experimental multi-wavelength technique to determine the beaming factor $\left( f_Ω\right)$ dependance on spin-down luminosity of a set of GeV pulsars. This technique requires three input param…
Context: The supernova remnant (SNR) G35.6-0.4 shows a non-thermal radio shell, however, no γ-ray or X-ray counterparts have been found for it thus far. One TeV source, HESS J1858+020, was found near the SNR and this source is spatially associated with some clouds at 3.6 kpc. Aims: To attain a better understanding of the origin of HESS J1858+020, we further investigate the association between SNR cosmic rays (CRs) and the clouds through the Fermi-LAT analysis and hadronic modeling. Methods: We performed the Fermi-LAT analysis to explore the GeV emission in and around the SNR. We explored the S…
The Fermi-LAT revealed that the census of the gamma-ray sky is dominated by blazars. Looking for a possible connection between radio and gamma-ray emission is a central issue for understanding the blazar physics, and various works were dedicated to this topic. However, while a strong and significant correlation was found between radio and gamma-ray emission in the 0.1-100 GeV energy range, the connection between radio and very high energy (VHE, E>0.1 TeV) emission is still elusive. The main reason is the lack of a homogeneous VHE sky coverage, due to the operational mode of the imaging atmosph…
We briefly review contemporary extragalactic γ-ray propagation models. It is shown that the Extragalactic Magnetic Field (EGMF) strength and structure are poorly known. Strict lower limits on the EGMF strength in voids are of order 10^{-17}--10^{-20} G, thus allowing a substantial contribution of a secondary component generated by electromagnetic cascades to the observable spectrum. We show that this "electromagnetic cascade model" is supported by data from imaging Cherenkov telescopes and the Fermi LAT detector.
Extremely High Synchrotron Peak (EHSP) blazars are observed to form a small population of sources with high energy hump peaking at TeV energies in their broad-band spectral energy distributions. The observed gamma-ray emission from these sources at GeV-TeV energies is described by unusual hard spectral indices. The observed spectral and temporal characteristics of these sources challenge the standard leptonic models for the broad-band emissions from blazars. Therefore, such sources provide astrophysical sites to investigate directly the particle acceleration, cooling of relativistic particles …
We fit the spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of 46 GeV - TeV BL Lac objects in the frame of leptonic one-zone synchrotron self-Compton (SSC) model and investigate the physical properties of these objects. We use the Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) method to obtain the basic parameters, such as magnetic field (B), the break energy of the relativistic electron distribution ($γ'_{\rm{b}}$) and the electron energy spectral index. Based on the modeling results, we support the following scenarios on GeV-TeV BL Lac objects: (1) Some sources have large Doppler factors, implying other radiation mech…
Shock acceleration by the shells of supernova remnants (SNRs) has been hypothesized to be the mechanism that produces the bulk of Galactic Cosmic Rays, possibly up to PeV energies. Some SNRs have been shown to accelerate cosmic rays to TeV energies and above. But which SNRs are indeed efficient accelerators of protons and nuclei? And what is the maximum energy up to which they can efficiently accelerate particles? Measurements of non-thermal emission, especially in the gamma-ray regime, are essential to answer these questions. The High-Altitude Water Cherenkov (HAWC) observatory, surveying the…
Cosmic rays are important probe of a number of fundamental physical problems such as the acceleration of high and very high energy particles in extreme astrophysical environments. The Galactic center is widely anticipated to be an important cosmic-ray source and the observations of some Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes did successfully reveal a component of TeV-PeV cosmic rays in the vicinity of the Galactic center. Here we report the identification of GeV-TeV cosmic rays in the central molecular zone with the $γ$-ray observations of the Fermi Large Area Telescope, whose spectrum and s…
We propose a scenario for self-consistent interpretation of GeV - TeV spectrum of a distant blazar PKS 1424+240. In this scenario, ultra-high energy (UHE) protons are assumed to exist in the blazar jet and produce gamma rays through synchrotron emission emitted by relativistic protons and pair cascades (resulted from $pγ$ interaction); meanwhile, some of these UHE protons may escape from the jet and are injected into intergalactic space. Therefore, we assume that UHE cosmic rays (CR) originate from relativistic protons in the jet and use energy-independent escape timescale to obtain UHECR inje…
It is difficult to distinguish hadronic process from the leptonic one in $γ$-ray observation, which is however crucial in revealing the origin of cosmic rays. As an endeavor in the regard, we focus in this work on the complex $γ$-ray emitting region, which partially overlaps with the unidentified TeV source HESS~J1858+020 and includes supernova remnant (SNR) G35.6$-$0.4 and HII region G35.6$-$0.5. We reanalyze CO-line, HI, and Fermi-LAT GeV $γ$-ray emission data of this region. The analysis of the molecular and HI data suggests that SNR G35.6$-$0.4 and HII region G35.6$-$0.5 are located at dif…
We consider acceleration of leptons up to GeV-TeV energies in the bow shock wind nebula of PSR J0437-4715 and their subsequent diffusion through the interstellar magnetic fields. The leptons accelerated at the pulsar wind termination surface are injected into re-acceleration in colliding shock flows. Modelled spectra of synchrotron emission from the accelerated electrons and positrons are consistent with the far-ultraviolet and X-ray observations of the nebula carried out with the Hubble Space Telescope and Chandra X-ray Observatory. These observations are employed to constrain the absolute fl…
A combined interpretation of the CALET $e^+\, +\, e^-$ spectrum up to 3 TeV and the AMS-02 positron spectrum up to 500 GeV was performed and the results are discussed. To parametrize the background electron flux, we assume a smoothly broken power-law spectrum with an exponential cut-off for electrons and fit this parametrization to the measurements, with either a pulsar or 3-body decay of fermionic Dark Matter as the extra electron-positron pair source responsible for the positron excess. We found that depending on the parameters for the background, both Dark Matter decay and the pulsar model …
Context. Known TeV sources detected by major Cerenkov telescopes are investigated to identify possible MeV-GeV gamma-ray counterparts. Aims. A systematic study of the known sources in the web-based TeVCat Catalog has been performed to search for possible gamma-ray counterpart on the AGILE data collected during the first period of operations in observing pointing mode. Methods. For each TeV source, a search for a possible gamma-ray counterpart based on a multi-source Maximum Likelihood algorithm is performed on the AGILE data taken with the GRID instrument from July 2007 to October 2009. Result…
After nearly a decade of operation, the three major arrays of atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes have revolutionized our view of the Very High Energy Universe, unveiling more than 100 sources of various types. MAGIC, consisting of two 17 m diameter telescopes on the Canary island of La Palma, and VERITAS, with four 12 m telescopes installed in southern Arizona, USA, have primarily explored the extragalactic sky, where the majority of the sources are active galactic nuclei (AGN), with γ-ray emission originating in their relativistic jets. ...... Highlights of these observations with H.E.S.S., MAG…
