Let L \subset S^3 denote an alternating link and Sigma(L) its branched double-cover. We give a short proof of the fact that the fundamental group of Sigma(L) admits a left-ordering iff L is an unlink. This result is originally due to Boyer-Gordon-Watson.
We show that any exceptional non-trivial Dehn surgery on a hyperbolic two-bridge knot yields a 3-manifold whose fundamental group is left-orderable. This gives a new supporting evidence for a conjecture of Boyer, Gordon and Watson.
We show that any exceptional non-trivial Dehn surgery on a twist knot, except the trefoil, yields a 3-manifold whose fundamental group is left-orderable. This is a generalization of a result of Clay, Lidman and Watson, and also gives a new supporting evidence for a conjecture of Boyer, Gordon and Watson.
We show that the fundamental group of the double branched cover of an infinite family of homologically thin, non-quasi-alternating knots is not left-orderable, giving further support for a conjecture of Boyer, Gordon, and Watson that an irreducible rational homology 3-sphere is an L-space if and only if its fundamental group is not left-orderable.
We show that every irreducible toroidal integer homology sphere graph manifold has a left-orderable fundamental group. This is established by way of a specialization of a result due to Bludov and Glass for the almagamated products that arise, and in this setting work of Boyer, Rolfsen and Wiest may be applied. Our result then depends on input from 3-manifold topology and Heegaard Floer homology.
Motivated by recent activity in low-dimensional topology, we provide a new criterion for left-orderability of a group under the assumption that the group is circularly-orderable: A group $G$ is left-orderable if and only if $G \times \mathbb{Z}/n\mathbb{Z}$ is circularly-orderable for all $n > 1$. This implies that every circularly-orderable group which is not left-orderable gives rise to a collection of positive integers that exactly encode the obstruction to left-orderability, which we call the obstruction spectrum. We precisely describe the behaviour of the obstruction spectrum with respect…
We prove the non-left-orderability of the fundamental group of the $n$-th fold cyclic branched cover of the pretzel knot $P(3,-3,-2k-1)$ for all integers $k$ and $n\ge 1$. These $3$-manifolds are $L$-spaces discovered by Issa and Turner.
We compute the nonabelian $\mathrm{SL_2}(\mathbb{C})$-character varieties of the rational knots $C(2n+1,2m,2)$ in the Conway notation, where $m$ and $n$ are non-zero integers. By studying real points on these varieties, we determine the left orderability of the fundamental groups of the cyclic branched covers of $C(2n+1,2m,2)$.
Motivated by the recent result that left-orderability of a group $G$ is intimately connected to circular orderability of direct products $G \times \mathbb{Z}/n\mathbb{Z}$, we provide necessary and sufficient cohomological conditions that such a direct product be circularly orderable. As a consequence of the main theorem, we arrive at a new characterization for the fundamental group of a rational homology 3-sphere to be left-orderable. Our results imply that for mapping class groups of once-punctured surfaces, and other groups whose actions on $S^1$ are cohomologically rigid, the products $G \t…
We show that the fundamental group of the $3$-manifold obtained by $\frac{p}{q}$-surgery along the $(n-2)$-twisted $(3,3m+2)$-torus knot, with $n,m \ge 1$, is not left-orderable if $\frac{p}{q} \ge 2n + 6m-3$ and is left-orderable if $\frac{p}{q}$ is sufficiently close to $0$.
In this paper, we introduce the notion of circular orderability for quandles. We show that the set all right (respectively left) circular orderings of a quandle is a compact topological space. We also show that the space of right (respectively left) orderings of a quandle embeds in its space of right (respectively left) circular orderings. Examples of quandles that are not left circularly orderable and examples of quandles that are neither left nor right circularly orderable are given.
Motivated by Clay and Watson's question on left-orderability of the fundamental group of the resultant space of an $r'$-surgery on the $(p, q)$-cable knots for $r' \in (pq-p-q,pq)$, this paper proves by elementary means that for specific pairs of $(p,q)$-cable knots of torus knots, $r' \in [pq-1,pq]$ gives a surgery yielding non-left orderable fundamental groups.
We introduce the notion of a strong L-space, a closed, oriented rational homology 3-sphere whose Heegaard Floer homology can be determined at the chain level. We prove that the fundamental group of a strong L-space is not left-orderable. Examples of strong L-spaces include the double branched covers of alternating links in S^3.
In a recent paper Y. Hu has given a sufficient condition for the fundamental group of the r-th cyclic branched covering of S^3 along a prime knot to be left-orderable in terms of representations of the knot group. Applying her criterion to a large class of two-bridge knots, we determine a range of the integer r>1 for which the r-th cyclic branched covering of S^3 along the knot is left-orderable.
Let $M$ be a $\mathbb{Q}$-homology solid torus. In this paper, we give a cohomological criterion for the existence of an interval of left-orderable Dehn surgeries on $M$. We apply this criterion to prove that the two-bridge knot that corresponds to the continued fraction $[1,1,2,2,2j]$ for $j\geq 1$ admits an interval of left-orderable Dehn surgeries. This family of two-bridge knots gives some positive evidence for a question of Xinghua Gao.
For some families of two-bridge knots, including double-twist knots with genus at least four, we determine precisely the set of integers $n>1$ such that the fundamental group of the $n$-fold cyclic branched cover of the 3-sphere along these knots is left-orderable. There are knots, including the figure-eight knot, for which this set is empty. We give the first class of hyperbolic knots, not of this type, for which these integers can be completely determined.
We consider the classical pretzel knots $P(a_1, a_2, a_3)$, where $a_1, a_2, a_3$ are positive odd integers. By using continuous paths of elliptic $\mathrm{SL}_2(\mathbb R)$-representations, we show that (i) the 3-manifold obtained by $\frac{m}{l}$-surgery on $P(a_1, a_2, a_3)$ has left orderable fundamental group if $\frac{m}{l} < 1$, and (ii) the $n^{\mathrm{th}}$-cyclic branched cover of $P(a_1, a_2, a_3)$ has left orderable fundamental group if $n > 2π/ \arccos(1-2/(1+a_1 a_2 + a_2 a_3 + a_3 a_1))$.
We provide an alternative proof of a sufficient condition for the fundamental group of the $n^{th}$ cyclic branched cover of $S^3$ along a prime knot $K$ to be left-orderable, which is originally due to Boyer-Gordon-Watson. As an application of this sufficient condition, we show that for any $(p,q)$ two-bridge knot, with $p\equiv 3 \text{ mod } 4$, there are only finitely many cyclic branched covers whose fundamental groups are not left-orderable. This answers a question posed by D{\c a}bkowski, Przytycki and Togha.
We show that the 3-fold cyclic branched cover of any genus 2 two-bridge knot $K_{[-2q,2s,-2t,2l]}$ is an L-space and its fundamental group is not left-orderable. Therefore the family of 3-fold cyclic branched cover of any genus 2 two-bridge knot $K_{[-2q,2s,-2t,2l]}$ verifies the $L$-space conjecture. We also show that if $K_{[2k,-2l]}$ is a 2-bridge knot with $k\geq 2$, $l>0$, then the fundamental group of the 5-fold cyclic branched cover of $K_{[2k,-2l]}$ is not left-orderable, which will complete the proof that the fundamental group of the 5-fold cyclic branched cover of any genus one two-b…
It has been recently conjectured by Boyer-Gordon-Watson that a closed, orientable, irreducible $3$-manifold $M$ is a Heegaard Floer $L$-space if and only if $π_1(M)$ is not left-orderable. In this article, we study this conjecture from the point of view of lattice cohomology, an invariant introduced by Némethi which is conjecturally isomorphic to the $HF^+$ version of Heegaard Floer homology. Using the invariant's combinatorial tractability as a stepping stone, we produce some interesting quite general families of negative-definite graph manifolds against which to test the Boyer-Gordon-Watson …
In this paper, we develop a method for constructing left-orders on the fundamental groups of rational homology 3-spheres. We begin by constructing the holonomy extension locus of a rational homology solid torus $M$, which encodes the information about peripherally hyperbolic $\widetilde{\text{PSL}_2\mathbb{R}}$ representations of $π_1(M)$. Plots of the holonomy extension loci of many rational homology solid tori are shown, and the relation to left-orderability is hinted. Using holonomy extension loci, we study rational homology 3-spheres coming from Dehn filling on rational homology solid tori…
Motivated by conjectures relating group orderability, Floer homology, and taut foliations, we discuss a systematic and broadly applicable technique for constructing left-orders on the fundamental groups of rational homology 3-spheres. Specifically, for a compact 3-manifold $M$ with torus boundary, we give several criteria which imply that whole intervals of Dehn fillings of $M$ have left-orderable fundamental groups. Our technique uses certain representations from $π_1(M)$ into $\widetilde{\mathrm{PSL}_2 \mathbb{R}}$, which we organize into an infinite graph in $H^1(\partial M; \mathbb{R})$ ca…
Alternating-sign Hopf plumbing along a tree yields fibered alternating links whose homological monodromy is, up to a sign, conjugate to some alternating-sign Coxeter transformation. Exploiting this tie, we obtain results about the location of zeros of the Alexander polynomial of the fibered link complement implying a strong case of Hoste's conjecture, the trapezoidal conjecture, bi-orderability of the link group, and a sharp lower bound for the homological dilatation of the monodromy of the fibration. The results extend to more general hyperbolic fibered 3-manifolds associated to alternating-s…
Let $M$ be a closed orientable irreducible $3$-manifold such that $π_1(M)$ is left orderable. (a) Let $M_0 = M - Int(B^{3})$, where $B^{3}$ is a compact $3$-ball in $M$. We have a process to produce a co-orientable Reebless foliation $\mathcal{F}$ in $M_0$ such that: (1) $\mathcal{F}$ has a transverse $(π_1(M),\mathbb{R})$ structure, (2) there exists a simple closed curve in $M$ that is co-orientably transverse to $\mathcal{F}$ and intersects every leaf of $\mathcal{F}$. More specifically, given a pair $(<,Γ)$ composed of a left-invariant order "$<$" of $π_1(M)$ and a fundamental domain $Γ$ of…
We investigate the orderability properties of fundamental groups of 3-dimensional manifolds. Many 3-manifold groups support left-invariant orderings, including all compact P^2-irreducible manifolds with positive first Betti number. For seven of the eight geometries (excluding hyperbolic) we are able to characterize which manifolds' groups support a left-invariant or bi-invariant ordering. We also show that manifolds modelled on these geometries have virtually bi-orderable groups. The question of virtual orderability of 3-manifold groups in general, and even hyperbolic manifolds, remains open, …
Examples suggest that there is a correspondence between L-spaces and 3-manifolds whose fundamental groups cannot be left-ordered. In this paper we establish the equivalence of these conditions for several large classes of such manifolds. In particular, we prove that they are equivalent for any closed, connected, orientable, geometric 3-manifold that is non-hyperbolic, a family which includes all closed, connected, orientable Seifert fibred spaces. We also show that they are equivalent for the 2-fold branched covers of non-split alternating links. To do this we prove that the fundamental group …
We study the left-orderability of the fundamental groups of cyclic branched covers of links which admit co-oriented taut foliations. In particular we do this for cyclic branched covers of fibred knots in integer homology $3$-spheres and cyclic branched covers of closed braids. The latter allows us to complete the proof of the L-space conjecture for closed, connected, orientable, irreducible $3$-manifolds containing a genus $1$ fibred knot. We also prove that the universal abelian cover of a manifold obtained by generic Dehn surgery on a hyperbolic fibred knot in an integer homology $3$-sphere …
For each connected alternating tangle, we provide an infinite family of non-left-orderable L-spaces. This gives further support for Conjecture [3] of Boyer, Gordon, and Watson that is a rational homology 3-sphere is an L-space if and only if it is non-left-orderable. These 3-manifolds are obtained as Dehn fillings of the double branched covering of any alternating encircled tangle. We give a presentation of these non-left-orderable L-spaces as double branched coverings of S^3, branched over some specified links that turn out to be hyperbolic. We show that the obtained families include many non…
Quasi-alternating links are a generalization of alternating links. They are homologically thin for both Khovanov homology and knot Floer homology. Recent work of Greene and joint work of the first author with Kofman resulted in the classification of quasi-alternating pretzel links in terms of their integer tassel parameters. Replacing tassels by rational tangles generalizes pretzel links to Montesinos links. In this paper we establish conditions on the rational parameters of a Montesinos link to be quasi-alternating. Using recent results on left-orderable groups and Heegaard Floer L-spaces, we…
