We present a nonlocal formulation of contact mechanics that accounts for the interplay of deformations due to multiple contact forces acting on a single particle. The analytical formulation considers the effects of nonlocal mesoscopic deformations characteristic of confined granular systems and, therefore, removes the classical restriction of independent contacts. This is in sharp contrast to traditional contact mechanics theories, which are strictly local and assume that contacts are independent regardless the confinement of the particles. For definiteness, we restrict attention to elastic spheres in the absence of gravitational forces, adhesion or friction. Hence, a notable feature of the nonlocal formulation is that, when nonlocal effects are neglected, it reduces to Hertz theory. Furthermore, we show that, under the preceding assumptions and up to moderate macroscopic deformations, the predictions of the nonlocal contact formulation are in remarkable agreement with detailed finite-element simulations and experimental observations, and in large disagreement with Hertz theory predictions---supporting that the assumption of independent contacts only holds for small deformations. The discrepancy between the extended theory presented in this work and Hertz theory is borne out by studying periodic homogeneous systems and disordered heterogeneous systems.
The jamming transition in granular materials is well-known for exhibiting hysteresis, wherein the level of shear stress required to trigger flow is larger than that below which flow stops. Although such behavior is typically modeled as a simple non-monotonic flow rule, the rheology of granular materials is also nonlocal due to cooperativity at the grain scale, leading for instance to increased strengthening of the flow threshold as system size is reduced. We investigate how these two effects - hysteresis and nonlocality - couple with each other by incorporating non-monotonicity of the flow rul…
Confined two-dimensional assemblies of floating particles, known as granular rafts, are prone to develop a highly nonlinear response under compression. Here we investigate the transition to the friction-dominated jammed state and map the gradual development of the internal stress profile with flexible pressure sensors distributed along the raft surface. Surprisingly, we observe that the surface stress screening builds up much more slowly than previously thought and that the typical screening distance later dramatically decreases. We explain this behavior in terms of progressive friction mobili…
Herein, we numerically study the rheology of a two-dimensional frictional granular system confined by constant pressure under oscillatory shear. Several scaling laws for the storage and loss moduli against the scaled strain amplitude have been found. The scaling laws in plastic regime for large strain amplitude can be understood by the angular distributions of the contact force. The scaling exponents are estimated by considering the physical mechanism.
Nonlocal rheologies allow for the modeling of granular flows from the creeping to intermediate flow regimes, using a small number of parameters. In this paper, we report on experiments testing how particle properties affect model parameters, using particles of three different shapes (circles, ellipses, and pentagons) and three different materials, including one which allows for measurements of stresses via photoelasticity. Our experiments are performed on a quasi-2D annular shear cell with a rotating inner wall and a fixed outer wall. Each type of particle is found to exhibit flows which are w…
Granular flow in a silo demonstrates multiple nonlocal rheological phenomena due to the finite size of grains. We solve the Nonlocal Granular Fluidity (NGF) continuum model in quasi-2D silo geometries and evaluate its ability to predict these nonlocal effects, including flow spreading and, importantly, clogging (arrest) when the opening is small enough. The model is augmented to include a free-separation criterion and is implemented numerically with an extension of the trans-phase granular flow solver described in arXiv:1411.5447, to produce full-field solutions. The implementation is validate…
The accurate and efficient modeling of granular flows and their interactions with external bodies is an open research problem. Continuum methods can be used to capture complexities neglected by terramechanics models without the computational expense of discrete element methods. Constitutive models and numerical solvers are the two primary aspects of the continuum methods. The viscoplastic size-dependent non-local granular fluidity (NGF) constitutive model has successfully provided a quantitative description of experimental flows in many different configurations in literature. This research dev…
We report new dynamical modes in confined soft granular flows, such as stochastic jetting and dripping, with no counterpart in continuum viscous fluids. The new modes emerge as a result of the propagation of the chaotic behaviour of individual grains -- here, monodisperse emulsion droplets to the level of the entire system as the emulsion is focused into a narrow orifice by an external viscous flow. We observe avalanching dynamics and the formation of remarkably stable jets -- singlefile granular chains -- which occasionally break, resulting in a non-Gaussian distribution of cluster sizes. We …
The transmission rules of interparticle forces between granular particles were analyzed, and a discrete packing model was proposed to calculate the static pressure at the bottom of granular material confined in a vertical column. The mechanical analysis and numerical simulation results indicate that the silo effect is caused by the frictional contacts between border particles and inner walls, the static pressure at the bottom depends on the external load initially, and then tends to a saturation pressure (Pn) in an exponential form. The saturation pressure (Pn) is positive linear related to th…
We investigate the mechanical behavior of a confined granular packing of irregular polyhedral particles under repeated heating and cooling cycles by means of numerical simulations with the Non-Smooth Contact Dynamics method. Assuming a homogeneous temperature distribution as well as constant temperature rate, we study the effect of the container shape, and coefficients of thermal expansions on the pressure buildup at the confining walls and the density evolution. We observe that small changes in the opening angle of the confinement can lead to a drastic peak pressure reduction. Furthermore, th…
We present contact radius and curvature corrections to the nonlocal contact formulation that take into account multi-particle interactions in elastic confined granular systems. The nonlocal contact formulation removes the classical assumption of independent contacts by taking into account the interplay of deformations due to multiple contact forces acting on a single particle. The contact radius correction considers the components of these deformations that contribute to the inter-particle contact area. The curvature correction improves the description of the contacting surface profiles by inc…
Recent numerical work has shown that high-speed confined granular flows down inclines exhibit a rich variety of flow patterns, including dense unidirectional flows, flows with longitudinal vortices and supported flows characterized by a dense core surrounded by a dilute hot granular gas (Brodu et al, JFM 2015). Here, we revisit the results obtained by Brodu et al. (JFM, 2015) and present new features characterizing these flows. In particular, we provide vertical and transverse profiles for the packing fraction, velocity and granular temperature. We also characterize carefully the transition bet…
Discrete element method simulations of confined bidisperse granular shear flows elucidate the balance between diffusion and segregation that can lead to either mixed or segregated states, depending on confining pressure. Results indicate that the collisional diffusion is essentially independent of overburden pressure. Because the rate of segregation diminishes with overburden pressure, the tendency for particles to segregate weakens relative to the re-mixing of particles due to collisional diffusion as the overburden pressure increases. Using a continuum approach that includes a pressure depen…
We study in this work a system of granular disks enclosed in a rectangular region. Granular disks are arranged, at high particle density, in a hexagonal lattice. Specifically, we are interested in the conditions for mechanical signal transmission. Two different potentials are considered. Our results are obtained by means of soft disks computer simulations. We analytically determine the eigenfrequencies spectra of the system from the corresponding Hessian matrix. Alternatively, the eigenfrequencies can also be obtained from the time evolution of molecular dynamics simulations. Previous works ha…
The Navier--Stokes transport coefficients for a model of a confined quasi-two-dimensional granular binary mixture of inelastic hard spheres are determined from the Boltzmann kinetic equation. A normal or hydrodynamic solution to the Boltzmann equation is obtained via the Chapman--Enskog method for states near the local version of the homogeneous time-dependent state. The mass, momentum, and heat fluxes are determined to first order in the spatial gradients of the hydrodynamic fields, and the associated transport coefficients are identified. As expected, they are given in terms of the solutions…
According to the acoustic fluidization hypothesis, elastic waves at a characteristic frequency form inside seismic faults even in the absence of an external perturbation. These waves are able to generate a normal stress which contrasts the confining pressure and promotes failure. Here, we study the mechanisms responsible for this wave activation via numerical simulations of a granular fault model. We observe the particles belonging to the percolating backbone, which sustains the stress, to perform synchronized oscillations over ellipticlike trajectories in the fault plane. These oscillations o…
We investigate computationally the pullout of a spherical intruder initially buried at the bottom of a granular column. The intruder starts to move out of the granular bed once the pulling force reaches a critical value, leading to material failure. The failure point is found to depend on the diameter of the granular column, pointing out the importance of particle-wall interaction in determining the material response. Discrete element simulations show that prior to failure, the contact network is essentially static, with only minor rearrangements of the particles. However, the force network, w…

By means of digital image correlation, we experimentally characterize the deformation of a dry granular medium confined inside a Hele-Shaw cell due to air injection at a constant overpressure high enough to deform it (from 50 to 250 kPa). Air injection at these overpressures leads to the formation of so called pneumatic fractures, i.e. channels empty of beads, and we discuss the typical deformations of the medium surrounding these structures. In addition we simulate the diffusion of the fluid overpressure into the medium, comparing it with the Laplacian solution over time, and relating pressur…

Applications of the kinetic theory for a model of a confined quasi-two dimensional granular mixture: Stability analysis and thermal diffusion segregation
Under external perturbations, inter-particle forces in disordered granular media are well known to form a heterogeneous distribution with filamentary patterns. Better understanding these forces and the distribution is important for predicting the collective behavior of granular media, the media second only to water as the most manipulated material in global industry. However, studies in this regard so far have been largely confined to granular media exhibiting only geometric heterogeneity, leaving the dimension of mechanical heterogeneity a rather uncharted area. Here, through a FEM contact me…
Liquid-crystalline ordering in vertically vibrated granular monolayers confined in annuli of different sizes is examined. The annuli consist of circular cavities with a central circular obstruction. In the absence of the central obstruction cylinders of low aspect-ratio exhibit tetratic order, except for the existence of four defects which restore the symmetry broken by the circular confinement. This behaviour is demanded by topology in systems with strong anchoring properties at the surface. By contrast, topology dictates that the annular geometry is compatible with a distorted tetratic phase…
We report the simultaneous softening and compaction of a confined dense granular pack in acoustic resonance experiments. Elastic softening is manifested by a reduction of the shear-wave speed, as the wave amplitude increases beyond some threshold. No macroscopic rearrangement of grains or dilatancy is observed; instead, elastic softening is accompanied by a tiny amount of compaction on the scale of grain asperities. We explain these apparent contradictory observations using a theoretical model, based on shear transformation zones (STZs), of soft spots and slipping contacts. It predicts a linea…
