We present the first variability study of the 1720 MHz OH masers located in the Galactic Center. Most of these masers are associated with the interaction between the supernova remnant SgrAEast and the interstellar medium, but a few masers are associated with the Circumnuclear Disk. The monitoring program covered five epochs and a timescale of 20-195 days, during which no masers disappeared and no new masers appeared. All masers have previously been detected in a single epoch observation about one year prior to the start of the monitoring experiment, implying relatively stable conditions for the 1720 MHz OH masers. No extreme variability was detected. The masers associated with the northeastern interaction region between the supernova remnant and the +50km/s molecular cloud show the highest level of variability. This can be explained with the +50km/s molecular cloud being located behind the supernova remnant and with a region of high OH absorbing column density along the line of sight. Possibly the supernova remnant provides additional turbulence to the gas in this region, through which the maser emission must travel. The masers in the southern interaction region are located on the outermost edge of SgrAEast which line of sight is not covered by either absorbing OH gas or a supernova remnant, in agreement with the much lower variability level observed. Similarly, the masers associated with the CND show little variability, consistent with them arising through collisions between relatively large clumps of gas in the CND and no significant amount of turbulent gas along the line of sight.
From targeted observations of ground-state OH masers towards 702 Multibeam (MMB) survey 6.7-GHz methanol masers, between Galactic longitudes 186$^{\circ}$ through the Galactic centre to 20$^{\circ}$, made as part of the `MAGMO' project, we present the physical and polarisation properties of the 1720-MHz OH maser transition, including the identification of Zeeman pairs. We present 10 new and 23 previously catalogued 1720-MHz OH maser sources detected towards star formation regions. In addition, we also detected 16 1720-MHz OH masers associated with supernova remnants and two sites of diffuse OH…
We report one OH 1665-MHz detection in new observations with the NSF's Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array. To the authors' knowledge, this is the first OH maser detection in M33. The source occurs at a position of $α=23.50069(9)^{\circ}$ and $δ= 30.67984(9)^{\circ}$ (J2000) and is unresolved at the beam size ($9."7$). Two H$α$ sources from the Moody et al. (2017) catalogue --- C1-1 and C1-2 --- are consistent within the beam size. We find a peak flux density of 24.1 mJy in a 1.5 km s$^{-1}$ channel. At the distance of M33, the source's specific luminosity is consistent with the brightest Galactic…
We present the results of the first complete unbaised survey of the Galactic Plane for 6035-MHz excited-state hydroxyl masers undertaken as part of the Methanol Multibeam Survey. These observations cover the Galactic longitude ranges $186^{\circ}< l < 60^{\circ}$ including the Galactic Centre. We report the detection of 127 excited-state hydroxyl masers within the survey region, 47 being new sources. The positions of new detections were determined from interferometric observations with the Australia Telescope Compact Array. We discuss the association of 6035-MHz masers in our survey with the 6…
The collisional pumping of CH3OH and OH masers in non-dissociative C-type shock waves is studied. The chemical processes responsible for the evolution of molecule abundances in the shock wave are considered in detail. The large velocity gradient approximation is used to model radiative transfer in molecular lines. We present calculations of the optical depth in maser transitions of CH3OH and OH for a grid of C-type shock models that vary in cosmic ray ionization rate, gas density and shock speed. We show that pre-shock gas densities $n_{H,tot} = 2 \times 10^4-2 \times 10^5$ cm$^{-3}$ are optim…
Sgr B2 is a well-known star forming molecular cloud complex in the Galactic center region showing evidence of high energy activity as traced by the K$α$ neutral FeI line at 6.4 keV, as well as GeV and TeV $γ$-ray emission. Here we present VLA and GMRT observations with respective resolutions of $\approx3.5"\times1.2"$ and 25$"\times25"$ and report the detection of an OH(1720 MHz) maser, with no accompanying OH 1665, 1667 and 1612 MHz maser emission. The maser coincides with a 150 MHz nonthermal radio source in Sgr B2(M). This rare class of OH(1720 MHz) masers or the so-called supernova remnant…
The collisional pumping of OH masers in non-dissociative C-type shocks near supernova remnants is considered. The emergence of maser emission in OH lines is investigated for various shock parameters - the shock speed, the preshock gas density, the cosmic-ray ionization rate, and the magnetic field strength. The largest optical depth in the 1720 MHz line is reached at high gas ionization rates $ζ\geq 10^{-15}$ s$^{-1}$, an initial density $n_{\rm H,0} \leq 2 \times 10^4$ cm$^{-3}$, and a shock speed $u_{\rm s} \geq 20$ km s$^{-1}$. According to our calculations, there is also a level population…
The excited states of OH masers detected in the environment of high-mass young stellar objects (HMYSOs) are important for improving our understanding of the physical conditions of these objects and also provide information about their magnetic fields. We aim to search for excited-state OH 6035 MHz maser emission in HMYSOs which might have escaped detection in previous surveys or were never searched for. A sample of HMYSOs derived from untargeted surveys of the 6668 MHz methanol maser line was observed at 6035 MHz OH transition with the Torun 32 m radio telescope. The 6035 MHz detections were o…
As a product of the maser monitoring program with the 26m telescope of the Hartebeesthoek Radio Astronomy Observatory (HartRAO), we present an unprecedented, contemporaneous flaring event of 10 maser transitions in hydroxyl, methanol, and water that began in 2015 January in the massive star-forming region NGC6334I in the velocity range -10 to -2 km/s. The 6.7 GHz methanol and 22.2 GHz water masers began flaring within 22 days of each other, while the 12.2 GHz methanol and 1665 MHz hydroxyl masers flared 80 and 113 days later respectively. The 1665 MHz, 6.7 GHz, and 22.2 GHz masers have all rem…
We present high angular resolution observations of OH maser emission towards the high-mass star forming region IRAS 06056+2131. The observations were carried out using the UK radio interferometer array, Multi-Element Radio Linked Interferometer Network (MERLIN) in the OH main lines at 1665- and 1667-MHz, in addition to the OH satellite line at 1720-MHz. The results of this study revealed emission in the 1665 MHz line with an estimated total intensity of $\sim 4$ Jy. We did not detect any emission from the 1667-MHz and 1720-MHz lines. The full polarization mode of MERLIN enables us to investiga…
We report results of 6.7 GHz methanol maser monitoring of 139 star-forming sites with the Torun 32 m radio telescope from June 2009 to February 2013. The targets were observed at least once a month, with higher cadences of 2-4 measurements per week for circumpolar objects. Nearly 80 percent of the sources display variability greater than 10 per cent on a time-scale between a week and a few years but about three quarters of the sample have only 1-3 spectral features which vary significantly. Irregular intensity fluctuation is the dominant type of variability and only nine objects show evidence …
Using the Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) we performed a high resolution OH maser survey in Galactic star-forming regions (SFRs). We observed all the ground state spectral lines: the main lines at 1665 and 1667 MHz and the satellite lines at 1612 and 1720 MHz. Due to the exceptionality of finding satellite lines in SFRs, we will focus our discussion on those lines. In our sample of 41 OH maser sources, five (12%) showed the 1612 MHz line and ten (24%) showed the 1720 MHz line, with only one source showing both lines. We find that 1720 MHz emission is correlated with the presence of HII regions…
We report on the measurement of the trigonometric parallaxes of 1612 MHz hydroxyl masers around two asymptotic giant branch stars, WX Psc and OH138.0+7.2, using the NRAO Very Long Baseline Array with in-beam phase referencing calibration. We obtained a 3-sigma upper limit of <=5.3 mas on the parallax of WX Psc, corresponding to a lower limit distance estimate of >~190 pc. The obtained parallax of OH138.0+7.2 is 0.52+/-0.09 mas (+/-18%), corresponding to a distance of 1.9(+0.4,-0.3) kpc, making this the first hydroxyl maser parallax below one milliarcsecond. We also introduce a new method of er…
We report new CO observations and a detailed molecular-line study of the mixed morphology (MM) supernova remnant (SNR) G359.1-0.5, which contains six OH (1720 MHz) masers along the radio shell, indicative of shock-cloud interaction. Observations of 12CO and 13CO J:1-0 lines were performed in a 38x38 arcmin area with the on-the-fly technique using the Kit Peak 12 Meter telescope. The molecular study has revealed the existence of a few clumps with densities around 1,000 cm$^{-3}$ compatible in velocity and position with the OH (1720 MHz) masers. These clumps, in turn, appear to be part of a larg…
Class I methanol masers are collisionally pumped and are generally correlated with outflows in star forming sites in the Galaxy. Using the VLA in its A-array configuration, we present a spectral line survey to identify methanol $J=4_{-1}\rightarrow3_0E$ emission at 36.169~GHz. Over 900 pointings were used to cover a region 66'x13'along the inner Galactic plane. A shallow survey of OH at 1612, 1665, 1667 and 1720 MHz was also carried out over the area covered by our methanol survey. We provide a catalog of 2240 methanol masers with narrow line-widths of $\sim1$ km s$^{-1}$, spatial resolution o…
We have compared the occurrence of 6.7-GHz and 12.2-GHz methanol masers with 22-GHz water masers and 6035-MHz excited-state OH masers in the 100 square degree region of the southern Galactic plane common to the Methanol Multibeam (MMB) and H2O southern Galactic Plane surveys (HOPS). We find the most populous star formation species to be 6.7-GHz methanol, followed by water, then 12.2-GHz and, finally, excited-state OH masers. We present association statistics, flux density (and luminosity where appropriate) and velocity range distributions across the largest, fully surveyed portion of the Galac…
Aims.Molecular masers, including methanol and hydroxyl masers, and in particular the ones in excited rotational states (ex-OHmasers), are one of the most informative tools for studying star-forming regions. So, the discovery, of new maser sources in theseregions is of great importance. Many studies and surveys of ex-OH maser sources have been carried out in the southern celestialhemisphere, but only a few have been done in the northern hemisphere. The specific aim of this work is to close this gap.Methods.The star-forming regions in the northern hemisphere with known active methanol masers wer…
We present high spatial resolution observations of ground-state OH masers, achieved using the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA). These observations were conducted towards 171 pointing centres, where OH maser candidates were identified previously in the Southern Parkes Large-Area Survey in Hydroxyl (SPLASH) towards the Galactic Center region, between Galactic longitudes of $355^{\circ}$ and $5^{\circ}$ and Galactic latitudes of $-2^{\circ}$ and $+2^{\circ}$. We detect maser emission towards 162 target fields and suggest that 6 out of 9 non-detections are due to intrinsic variability. Due…

We apply the concept of superradiance introduced by Dicke in 1954 to the OH molecule 1612 MHz spectral line often used for the detection of masers in circumstellar envelopes of evolved stars. As the detection of 1612 MHz OH masers in the outer shells of envelopes of these stars implies the existence of a population inversion and a high level of velocity coherence, and that these are two necessary requirements for superradiance, we investigate whether superradiance can also happen in these regions. Superradiance is characterized by high intensity, spatially compact, burst-like features taking p…
We present the results of a monitoring campaign using the KAT-7 and HartRAO 26m telescopes, of hydroxyl, methanol and water vapour masers associated with the high-mass star forming region G9.62+0.20E. Periodic flaring of the main line hydroxyl masers were found, similar to that seen in the 6.7 and 12.2 GHz methanol masers. The 1667 MHz flares are characterized by a rapid decrease in flux density which is coincident with the start of the 12.2 GHz methanol maser flare. The decrease in the OH maser flux density is followed by a slow increase till a maximum is reached after which the maser decays …
We report VLBI monitoring observations of the 22 GHz water (H$_{2}$O) masers around the Mira variable BX Cam, which were carried out as a part of the EAVN Synthesis of Stellar Maser Animations (ESTEMA) project. Data of 37 epochs in total were obtained from 2018 May to 2021 June with a time interval of 3-4 weeks, spanning approximately three stellar pulsation periods ($P= \sim$440 d). In particular, the dual-beam system equipped on the VERA stations was used to measure the kinematics and parallaxes of the H$_{2}$O maser features. The measured parallax, $π=1.79\pm 0.08$ mas, is consistent with $…
Discovery of periodic maser emission was an unexpected result from monitoring observations of methanol transitions in high-mass young stellar objects. We report on the detection of five new periodic sources from a monitoring program with the Torun 32 m telescope. Variability with a period of 149 to 540 d and different patterns from sinusoidal-like to intermittent was displayed. Three dimensional structure of G59.633$-$0.192 determined from the time delays of burst peaks of the spectral features and high angular resolution map implies that the emission traces a disk. For this source the 6.7 GHz…
Based on the long-term monitoring data of the water maser since 2019.0 to 2021.0 allowed us detecting in IRAS 16293-2422 two powerful phenomena lasted about year at radial velocities near 6 and 8 km s$^{-1}$. In both cases, powerful short flares were located on the tops of less powerful, but more prolonged ones (2.5 and 0.5 kJy), radiation of which initiated the emission of more powerful flares. For the first time, configurations of several emitting maser spots located at the line of sight to the observer were discovered experimentally. This made it possible to confirm the hypothesis of activa…
This paper reports observations of a 22 GHz water maser `superburst' in the G25.65+1.05 massive star forming region, conducted in response to an alert from the Maser Monitoring Organisation (M2O). Very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) observations using the European VLBI Network (EVN) recorded a maser flux density of $1.2 \times 10^{4}$ Jy. The superburst was investigated in the spectral, structural and temporal domains and its cause was determined to be an increase in maser path length generated by the superposition of multiple maser emitting regions aligning in the line of sight to the ob…
