We propose a new approach to approximate the exchange and correlation (XC) functional in density functional theory. The XC potential is considered as an electrostatic potential, generated by a fictitious XC density, which is in turn a functional of the electronic density. We apply the approach to develop a correction scheme that fixes the asymptotic behavior of any approximated XC potential for finite systems. Additionally, the correction procedure gives the value of the derivative discontinuity; therefore it can directly predict the fundamental gap as a ground-state property.
The landmark 1982 paper of Perdew, Parr, Levy, and Balduz (often called PPLB) laid the foundation for our modern understanding of the role of the derivative discontinuity in density functional theory, which drives much development to account for its effects. A simple model for the chemical potential at vanishing temperature played a crucial role in their argument. We investigate the validity of this model in the simplest non-trivial system to which it can be applied and which can be easily solved exactly, the Hubbard dimer. We find exact agreement in the crucial zero-temperature limit, and sho…
Many references exist in the density functional theory (DFT) literature to the chemical potential of the electrons in an atom or a molecule. The origin of this notion has been the identification of the Lagrange multiplier $μ= \partial E/\partial N$ in the Euler-Lagrange variational equation for the ground state density as the chemical potential of the electrons. We first discuss why the Lagrange multiplier in this case is an arbitrary constant and therefore cannot be a physical characteristic of an atom or molecule. The switching of the energy derivative ("chemical potential") from $-I$ to $-A…
Electrostatic potential fitting method (ESPF) is a powerful way of defining atomic charges derived from quantum density matrices fitted to reproduce a quantum mechanical charge distribution in the presence of an external electrostatic potential. These can be used in the Hamiltonian to define a robust and efficient electrostatic embedding QM/MM method. The original formulation of ESPF QM/MM contained two main approximations, namely, the neglect of grid derivatives and the non-conservation of the total QM charge. Here, we present a new ESPF atomic charge operator which solves these drawbacks at …
