We present a method to obtain congruences modulo powers of 2 for sequences given by recurrences of finite depth with polynomial coefficients. We apply this method to Catalan numbers, Fuß-Catalan numbers, and to subgroup counting functions associated with Hecke groups and their lifts. This leads to numerous new results, including many extensions of known results to higher powers of 2.
We present a method, illustrated by several examples, to find explicit counts of permutations containing a given multiset of three letter patterns. The method is recursive, depending on bijections to reduce to the case of a smaller multiset, and involves a consideration of separate cases according to how the patterns overlap. Specifically, we use the method (i) to provide combinatorial proofs of Bona's formula {2n-3}choose{n-3} for the number of n-permutations containing one 132 pattern and Noonan's formula 3/n {2n}choose{n+3} for one 123 pattern, (ii) to express the number of n-permutations c…
I present a recursive formula for calculating the number of abelian squares of length $n+n$ over an alphabet of size $d$. The presented formula is similar to a previously known formula but has substantially lower complexity when $d\gg n$.
This paper deals with the distribution of descent number in standard Young tableaux of certain shapes. A simple explicit formula is presented for the number of tableaux of any shape with two rows, with any specified number of descents. For shapes of three rows with one cell in the third row recursive formulas are given, and are solved in certain cases.
Motivated by the question of computing the probability of successful power domination by placing k monitors uniformly at random, in this paper we give a recursive formula to count the number of power domination sets of size k in a labeled complete m-ary tree. As a corollary we show that the desired probability can be computed in exponential with linear exponent time.
The simple connected graphs may be classified by their cycle composition (number and lengths of cycles). This work derives the counting series of the simple connected graphs that have cycles of unrestricted number and length, but no overlapping cycles. Cycle pairs of these graphs of interest must not have common nodes or edges. The recipe of counting these graphs is based on the counting series of the associated planted graphs, multisets of planted graphs, a recursive synthesis of enriched trees, and a generalized Otter's formula that maps the underlying rooted block graphs to the underlying b…
We present a method for obtaining congruences modulo powers of 3 for sequences given by recurrences of finite depth with polynomial coefficients. We apply this method to Catalan numbers, Motzkin numbers, Riordan numbers, Schröder numbers, Eulerian numbers, trinomial coefficients, Delannoy numbers, and to functions counting free subgroups of finite index in the inhomogeneous modular group and its lifts. This leads to numerous new results, including many extensions of known results to higher powers of 3.
The number of tree-rooted maps, that is, rooted planar maps with a distinguished spanning tree, of size $n$ is C(n)C(n+1) where C(n)=binomial(2n,n)/(n+1) is the nth Catalan number. We present a (long awaited) simple bijection which explains this result. We prove that our bijection is isomorphic to a former recursive construction on shuffles of parenthesis systems due to Cori, Dulucq and Viennot.
We present recent results on the enumeration of $q$-coloured planar maps, where each monochromatic edge carries a weight $ν$. This is equivalent to weighting each map by its Tutte polynomial, or to solving the $q$-state Potts model on random planar maps. The associated generating function, obtained by Olivier Bernardi and the author, is differentially algebraic. That is, it satisfies a (non-linear) differential equation. The starting point of this result is a functional equation written by Tutte in 1971, which translates into enumerative terms a simple recursive description of planar maps. The…
We count the number of compatible pairs of indexing systems for the cyclic group $C_{p^n}$. Building on work of Balchin--Barnes--Roitzheim, we show that this sequence of natural numbers is another family of Fuss--Catalan numbers. We count this two different ways: showing how the conditions of compatibility give natural recursive formulas for the number of admissible sets and using an enumeration of ways to extend indexing systems by conceptually simpler pieces.
A vertex k-labeling of graph G is distinguishing if the only automorphism that preserves the labels of G is the identity map. The distinguishing number of G, D(G), is the smallest integer k for which G has a distinguishing k-labeling. In this paper, we apply the principle of inclusion-exclusion and develop recursive formulas to count the number of inequivalent distinguishing k-labelings of a graph. Along the way, we prove that the distinguishing number of a planar graph can be computed in time polynomial in the size of the graph.}
Consider a $2\times n$ rectangular grid composed of $1\times 1$ squares. Cutting only along the edges between squares, how many ways are there to divide the board into $k$ pieces? Building off the work of Durham and Richmond, who found the closed-form solutions for the number of divisions into 2 and 3 pieces, we prove a recursive relationship that counts the number of divisions of the board into $k$ pieces. Using this recursion, we obtain closed-form solutions for the number of divisions for $k=4$ and $k=5$ using fitting techniques on data generated from the recursion. Furthermore, we show tha…
In this case study in ``fully automated enumeration'', we illustrate how to take full advantage of symbolic computation by developing (what we call) `symbolic-dynamical-programming' algorithms for computing many terms of `hard to compute sequences', namely the number of Latin trapezoids, generalized derangements, and generalized three-rowed Latin rectangles. At the end we also sketch the proof of a generalization of Ira Gessel's 1987 theorem that says that for any number of rows, k, the number of Latin rectangles with k rows and n columns is P-recursive in n. Our algorithms are fully implement…
In this note we derive enumerative formulas for several types of labelled acyclic directed graphs by slight modifications of the familiar recursive formula for simple acyclic digraphs. These considerations are motivated by, and based upon, recent combinatorial results in geometric topology obtained by S.Choi, who established exact correspondences between acyclic digraphs and so-called small covers over hypercubes and related polytopes. In particular, we show that the number of equivalence classes of small covers over the cartesian product of $n$ copies of an $r$-simplex is equal to the number …
Phylogenetic networks generalize phylogenetic trees, and have been introduced in order to describe evolution in the case of transfer of genetic material between coexisting species. There are many classes of phylogenetic networks, which can all be modeled as families of graphs with labeled leaves. In this paper, we focus on rooted and unrooted level-k networks and provide enumeration formulas (exact and asymptotic) for rooted and unrooted level-1 and level-2 phylogenetic networks with a given number of leaves. We also prove that the distribution of some parameters of these networks (such as the…
In this paper, we obtain the counting formulaes of convex pentagons and convex hexagons, respectively, in an $n$-triangular net by solving the corresponding recursive formulaes.
The tiling problem has been a famous problem that has appeared in many Mathematics problems. Many of its solutions are rooted in high-level Mathematics. Thus we hope to tackle this problem using more elementary Mathematics concepts. In this report, we start with the simplest cases, with the smaller numbers: the number of ways to tile a $2 \times n$, $3 \times n$, $4 \times n$ rectangular board using $2 \times 1$ domino tiles, where the number of rows is fixed and we present a recursive formula based on $m$ and the earlier terms. This allows us to deduce the non-recursive formula for each case …
We establish formulas for the number of all downsets (or equivalently, of all antichains) of a finite poset P. Then, using these numbers, we determine recursively and explicitly the number of all posets having a fixed set of minimal points and inducing the poset P on the non- minimal points. It turns out that these counting functions are closely related to a collection of downset numbers of certain subposets. Since any function of that kind is an exponential sum (with the number of minimal points as exponent), we call it the exponential function of the poset. Some linear equations, divisibilit…
Hexaflexagons were popularized by the late Martin Gardner in his first Scientific American column in 1956. Oakley and Wisner showed that they can be represented abstractly by certain recursively defined permutations called pats, and deduced that they are counted by the Catalan numbers. Counting pats by number of descents yields the curious identity Sum[1/(2n-2k+1)binom{2n-2k+1}{k}binom{2k}{n-k},k=0..n] = C(n), where only the middle third of the summands are nonzero.
We develop a recursive formula for counting the number of rectangulations of a square, i.e the number of combinatorially distinct tilings of a square by rectangles. Our formula specializes to give a formula counting generic rectangulations, as analyzed by Reading in [5]. Our computations agree with [5] as far as was calculated and extend to the non-generic case. An interesting feature of the number of rectangulations is that it appears to have an 8-fold periodicity modulo 2. We verify this periodicity for small values of n, but the general result remains elusive, perhaps hinting at some unseen…
The paper counts the number of reduced quasigroup words of a particular length in a certain number of generators. Taking account of the relationship with the Catalan numbers, counting words in a free magma, we introduce the term peri-Catalan number for the free quasigroup word counts. The main result of the paper is an exact recursive formula for the peri-Catalan numbers, structured by the Euclidean Algorithm. The Euclidean Algorithm structure does not readily lend itself to standard techniques of asymptotic analysis. However, conjectures for the asymptotic behavior of the peri-Catalan numbers…
We obtain explicit branching rules for graded cell modules and graded simple modules over the endomorphism algebra of a Bott-Samelson bimodule. These rules allow us to categorify a well-known recursive formula for Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials.
