We study a high-TC superconducting (YBa2Cu3O7-d) / ferromagnetic (Co/Pt multilayer) hybrid which exhibits resistance switching driven by the magnetic history: depending on the direction of the external field, a pronounced decrease or increase of the mixed-state resistance is observed as magnetization reversal occurs within the Co/Pt multilayer. We demonstrate that stray magnetic fields cause these effects via i) creation of vortices/antivortices and ii) magnetostatic pinning of vortices that are induced by the external field.
We studied thermal and dynamic history effects in the vortex lattice (VL) near the order-disorder transition in clean NbSe$_2$ single crystals. Comparing the evolution of the effective vortex pinning and the bulk VL structure, we observed metastable superheated and supercooled VL configurations that coexist with a hysteretic effective pinning response due to thermal cycling of the system. A novel scenario, governed by the interplay between (lower) elastic and (higher) plastic energy barriers, is proposed as an explanation for our observations: Plastic barriers, which prevent the annihilation o…
Square arrays of sub-micrometer columnar defects in thin YBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{7-δ}$ (YBCO) films with spacings down to 300 nm have been fabricated by a He ion beam projection technique. Pronounced peaks in the critical current and corresponding minima in the resistance demonstrate the commensurate arrangement of flux quanta with the artificial pinning landscape, despite the strong intrinsic pinning in epitaxial YBCO films. Whereas these vortex matching signatures are exactly at predicted values in field-cooled experiments, they are displaced in zero-field cooled, magnetic-field ramped experime…
Numerical simulations of the hysteretic ac loss in a coated superconductor with a more realistic version of architecture were performed via finite-element technique in the presence of an oscillating magnetic field. The coated superconductor was electromagnetically modeled by resorting to the quasistatic approximation of a vector potential approach in conjunction with the nonlinear descriptions of the superconducting layer and ferromagnetic substrate therein by a power law model and the Langevin equation respectively. A diverse effect of the ferromagnetic substrate on the hysteretic ac loss, de…
First experimental observations of the ferromagnetic shielding effect in high-Tc superconducting coated conductors were carried out. Experimental results were compared to simulations calling upon finite-element calculations based on the H-formulation of Maxwell equations to model superconducting strips with ferromagnetic shields. Samples of copper-stabilized coated conductors were electroplated with nickel shields and afterwards characterized. Both externally applied oscillating transverse magnetic fields as well as transport currents were studied. Having observed promising gains with respect …
We have observed the evolution of phase diagram and vortex pinning using a single ferromagnet/superconductor bilayer of [Co/Pt]8/Nb through a special demagnetization procedure. It induces a continuous and reversible change of the domain width with equal positive/negative domains enabling the observation of the predicted tunable phase diagram. The tunable domain pattern also systematically affects vortex pinning. We have determined the dependence of the activation energy of vortex pinning on domain width, temperature, and magnetic field.
This paper reports the observation of hysteresis in the vortex pinning in a superconductor / ferromagnetic epitaxial nanocomposite consisting of fcc Gd particles incorporated in a Nb matrix. We show that this hysteretic pinning is associated with magnetic reversal losses in the Gd particles and is fundamentally different in origin to pinning interactions previously observed for ferromagnetic particles or other microstructural features.
We use a model of vortex dynamics and collective weak pinning theory to study the residual dissipation due to trapped magnetic flux in a dirty superconductor. Using simple estimates, approximate analytical calculations, and numerical simulations, we make predictions and comparisons with experiments performed in CERN and Cornell on resonant superconducting radio-frequency NbCu, doped-Nb and Nb$_3$Sn cavities. We invoke hysteretic losses originating in a rugged pinning potential landscape to explain the linear behavior of the sensitivity of the residual resistance to trapped magnetic flux as a f…
This is an analytical study of pinning and spontaneous vortex phase is a system consisting of a superconducting thin film pierced by a long ferromagnetic columnar defect of finite radius $R$. The magnetic fields, screening currents, energy and pinning forces for this system are calculated. The interaction between the magnetic field of vortices and the magnetization outside the plane of the film and its close proximity enhances vortex pinning significantly. Spontaneous vortex phase appears when the magnetization of the columnar defect is increased above a critical value. Transitions between pha…
Vortex pinning in a type-II superconducting Pb film covering a Co/Pt multilayer with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy is investigated. Different stable magnetic domain patterns like band and bubble domains can be created in the Co/Pt multilayer, clearly influencing the vortex pinning in the superconducting Pb layer. Most effective pinning is observed for the bubble domain state. We demonstrate that the pinning properties of the superconductor/ferromagnet bilayer can be controlled by tuning the size, density and magnetization direction of the bubbles.
We use local and global magnetometry measurements to study the influence of magnetic domain width w on the domain-induced vortex pinning in superconducting/ferromagnetic bilayers, built of a Nb film and a ferromagnetic Co/Pt multilayer with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy, with an insulating layer to eliminate proximity effect. The quasi-periodic domain patterns with different and systematically adjustable width w, as acquired by a special demagnetization procedure, exert tunable vortex pinning on a superconducting layer. The largest enhancement of vortex pinning, by a factor of more than 10…
Measuring the $ac$ magnetic response of a type II superconductor provides valuable information on the pinning landscape (pinscape) of the material. We use strong pinning theory to derive a microscopic expression for the Campbell length $λ_{\rm \scriptscriptstyle C}$, the penetration depth of the $ac$ signal. We show that $λ_{\rm \scriptscriptstyle C}$ is determined by the jump in the pinning force, in contrast to the critical current $j_c$ which involves the jump in pinning energy. We demonstrate that the Campbell lengths generically differ for zero-field-cooled and field-cooled samples and pr…
We have studied the local critical current density, jc, in the superconductor thin film of bilayer structures consisting of YBa2Cu3O7 and the ferromagnets La2/3Ca1/3MnO3 and SrRuO3, respectively, by means of quantitative magneto-optics. A pronounced hysteresis of jc was observed which is ascribed to the magnetization state of the ferromagnetic layer. The results are discussed within the frame of magnetic vortex - wall interactions.
The pinning of flux lines by two different types of regular arrays of submicron magnetic dots is studied in superconducting Pb films; rectangular Co dots with in-plane magnetization are used as pinning centers to investigate the influence of the magnetic stray field of the dots on the pinning phenomena, whereas multilayered Co/Pt dots with out-of-plane magnetization are used to study the magnetic interaction between the flux lines and the magnetic moment of the dots. For both types of pinning arrays, matching anomalies are observed in the magnetization curves versus perpendicular applied field…
We investigated the pinning of flux lines in a superconducting film by a regular array of magnetic antidots. The sample consists of a Co/Pt multilayer with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy in which a regular pattern of submicron holes is introduced and which is covered by a type-II superconducting Pb film. The resulting ferromagnetic/superconducting heterostructure shows a pronounced asymmetric magnetization curve with respect to the field polarity. This asymmetry clearly demonstrates that the magnetic contribution dominates the pinning potential imposed by the magnetic antidots on the superc…
We present a theoretical study of vortices within a harmonically trapped Bose-Einstein condensate in a rotating optical lattice. Due to the competition between vortex-vortex interactions and pinning to the optical lattice we find a very complicated energy landscape, which leads to hysteretic evolution. The qualitative structure of the vortex configurations depends on the commensurability between the vortex density and the site density -- with regular lattices when these are commensurate, and concentric rings when they are not. We model the imaging of these structures by calculating time-of-fli…
Superconductor/Ferromagnet (S/F) hybrid systems show interesting magneto-transport behaviors that result from the transfer of properties between both constituents. For instance, magnetic memory can be transferred from the F into the S through the pinning of superconducting vortices by the ferromagnetic textures. The ability to tailor this type of induced behavior is important to broaden its range of applications. Here we show that engineering the F magnetization reversal allows tuning the strength of the vortex pinning (and memory) effects, as well as the field range in which they appear. This…
We report the effects of cobalt doping on the magnetic properties of two-dimensional van der Waals ferromagnet Fe3GeTe2. Single crystals of (Fe{1-x}Cox)3GeTe2 with x=0-0.78 were successfully synthesized and characterized with x-ray diffraction, energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy and magnetization measurements. Both the Curie-Weiss temperature and ferromagnetic (FM) ordered moment of Fe3GeTe2 are gradually suppressed upon Co doping. A kink in zero-field-cooling low field M(T) curve which is previously explained as an antiferromagnetic transition is observed for samples with x=0-0.58. Our deta…
We have studied the isothermal magnetization $M(H)$ of CeCo(In$_{1-x}$Cd$_x$)$_5$ with $x$ = 0.0075 and 0.01 down to 50 mK. Pronounced field-history dependent phenomena occur in the coexistence regime of the superconducting and antiferromagnetic phases. At low-fields, a phenomenological model of magnetic-flux entry well explains $M(H)$ implying the dominance of bulk pinning effect. However, unless crystallographic quenched disorder is hysteretic, the asymmetric peak effect (ASPE) which appears at higher fields cannot be explained by the pinning of vortices due to material defects. Also the tem…
Type-II superconductors owe their magnetic and transport properties to vortex pinning, the immobilization of flux quanta through material inhomogeneities or defects. Characterizing the potential energy landscape for vortices, the pinning landscape (or short, pinscape), is of great technological importance. Besides measurement of the critical current density $j_c$ and of creep rates $S$, the $ac$ magnetic response provides valuable information on the pinscape which is different from that obtained through $j_c$ or $S$, with the Campbell penetration depth $λ_{\rm \scriptscriptstyle C}$ defining a…
Strong pinning of superconducting flux quanta by a square array of 1 $μ$m-sized ferromagnetic dots in a magnetic-vortex state was visualized by low-temperature magnetic force microscopy (LT-MFM). A direct correlation of the superconducting flux lines with the positions of the dots was derived. The force that the MFM tip exerts on the individual vortex in the depinning process was used to estimate the spatial modulation of the pinning potential. It was found, that the superconducting vortices which are preferably located on top of the Py dots experience about 15 times stronger pinning forces as…
Large area arrays of through-thickness nanoscale pores have been milled into superconducting Nb thin films via a process utilizing anodized aluminum oxide thin film templates. These pores act as artificial flux pinning centers, increasing the superconducting critical current, Jc, of the Nb films. By optimizing the process conditions including anodization time, pore size and milling time, Jc values approaching and in some cases matching the Ginzburg-Landau depairing current of 30 MA/cm^2 at 5 K have been achieved - a Jc enhancement over as-deposited films of more than 50 times. In the field dep…
Using scanning tunneling microscopy and Ginzburg-Landau simulations we explore vortex configurations in magnetically coupled NbSe$_2$-Permalloy superconductor-ferromagnet bilayer. The Permalloy film with stripe domain structure induces periodic local magnetic induction in the superconductor creating a series of pinning-antipinning channels for externally added magnetic flux quanta. Such laterally confined Abrikosov vortices form quasi-1D arrays (chains). The transitions between multichain states occur through propagation of kinks at the intermediate fields. At high fields we show that the syst…
Heterogeneous sonochemical method was applied for synthesis of novel superconducting nanocomposites consisting of magnetic (and/or nonmagnetic) nanoparticles embedded into the bulk of ceramic superconductors. In addition to in-situ production of the efficient pinning centers, this synthesis method considerably improves the interbrain coupling. Significant enhancement of the magnetic irreversibility is reported for Fe2O3 nanoparticles embedded into the bulk of MgB2 superconductor. Nonmagnetic Mo2O5 nanoparticles also increase pinning strength, but less than magnetic Fe2O3. Detailed magnetizatio…
The cuprate high-temperature superconductors (HTSC) have been the subject of intense study for more than 30 years with no consensus yet on the underlying mechanism of the superconductivity. Conventional wisdom dictates that the mysterious and extraordinary properties of the cuprates arise from doping a strongly correlated antiferromagnetic (AFM) insulator (1,2). The highly overdoped cuprates$-$those beyond the dome of superconductivity (SC)--are considered to be conventional Fermi liquid metals (3). Here, we report the emergence of itinerant ferromagnetic order (FM) below 4K for doping beyond …
In type-II superconductors, the macroscopic response of vortex matter to an external perturbation depends on the local interaction of flux lines with the pinning landscape (pinscape). The (Campbell) penetration depth $λ_{\mathrm{\scriptscriptstyle C}}$ of an $ac$ field perturbation is often associated with a phenomenological pinning curvature. However, this basic approach is unable to capture thermal hysteresis effects observed in a variety of superconductors. The recently developed framework of strong-pinning theory has established a quantitative relationship between the microscopic pinscape …
Single crystals of MgCNi$_3$, with areas sized up to 1 mm$^{2}$, were grown by the self flux method using a cubic anvil high pressure technique. The first critical field \textit{H$_{c1}$}, determined from a zero temperature extrapolation, is around 18 mT. Using the tunnel - diode resonator technique, the London penetration depth was measured with no applied \textit{dc} field and the Campbell penetration depth was measured with the external \textit{dc} fields up to 9T for two different sample orientations with respect to the direction of applied magnetic field. The absolute value of the London …
We study the elasticity, fluctuations and pinning of a putative spontaneous vortex solid in ferromagnetic superconductors. Using a rigorous thermodynamic argument, we show that in the idealized case of vanishing crystalline pinning anisotropy the long-wavelength tilt modulus of such a vortex solid vanishes identically, as guaranteed by the underlying rotational invariance. The vanishing of the tilt modulus means that, to lowest order, the associated tension elasticity is replaced by the softer, curvature elasticity. The effect of this is to make the spontaneous vortex solid qualitatively more …
The dynamics of quantized magnetic vortices and their pinning by materials defects determine electromagnetic properties of superconductors, particularly their ability to carry non-dissipative currents. Despite recent advances in the understanding of the complex physics of vortex matter, the behavior of vortices driven by current through a multi-scale potential of the actual materials defects is still not well understood, mostly due to the scarcity of appropriate experimental tools capable of tracing vortex trajectories on nanometer scales. Using a novel scanning superconducting quantum interfe…
The pinning properties of type-II superconductors can be efficiently controlled by using laterally nanostructured ferromagnet / superconductor bilayers. This will be illustrated by studying the flux pinning in thin superconducting Pb films which are deposited on top of two types of magnetic nanostructures with out-of-plane magnetisation: (i) an array of dots, and (ii) an array of antidots, both made from a Co/Pt multilayer. The magnetisation curves of the Pb film are extremely asymmetric with respect to the polarity of the magnetic field when the magnetic moments in the Co/Pt multilayer were a…
Enhancement of flux pinning by magnetic nanoparticles embedded into the bulk of type-2 superconductor is studied both theoretically and experimentally. Magnetic part of the pinning force associated with the interaction between a spherical magnetic inclusion and an Abrikosov vortex was calculated in the London approximation. Calculations are supported by the experimental results obtained on sonochemically modified MgB2 superconductor with embedded magnetic Fe2O3 nanoparticles and compared to MgB2 with nonmagnetic Mo2O5 pinning centers of similar concentration and particle size distribution. It …
We study the pinning of vortices in thin film superconductors by magnetic dots in the London approximation. A single dot is in general able to pin multiple field-induced vortices, up to a saturation number n_s, which can be much larger than one. However, the magnetic field of the dot also creates intrinsic vortices and anti-vortices, which must be accounted for. In a ferromagnetic dot array, the intrinsic anti-vortices are pinned only interstitially. Much stronger pinning effect is expected of an antiferromagnetic dot array. Possible realizations of various magnetic configurations are discusse…
We constructed a superconducting/ferromagnetic hybrid system in which the ordering of the pinning potential landscape for flux quanta can be manipulated. Flux pinning is induced by an array of magnetic nanodots in the magnetic vortex state, and controlled by the magnetic history. This allows switching on and off the collective pinning of the flux-lattice. In addition, we observed field-induced superconductivity that originates from the annihilation of flux quanta induced by the stray fields from the magnetic vortices.
Vortex motion in ferromagnetic-superconducting bilayers constituted by thin YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-δ}$ film deposited on the top of thin manganite La$_{0.67}$Sr$_{0.33}$MnO$_3$ film has been investigated. Both films were deposited on uniformly twinned single-crystalline substrates and patterned into strips directed at different angles to the twin lines pattern. These conditions lead to the guided vortex motion at different angles to the periodic pinning potential. It has been established that critical current and flux flow resistance in such an anisotropic pinning landscape-scale follow the ellipt…
We demonstrate a unique prospect for inducing anisotropic vortex pinning and manipulating the directional motion of vortices using the stripe domain patterns of a uniaxial magnetic film in a the superconducting/ferromagnetic hybrid. Our observations can be described by a model, which considers interactions between magnetic charges of vortices and surface magnetic charges of domains resulting in the enhanced pinning of vortices on domain walls.
The design of artificial vortex pinning landscapes is a major goal towards large scale applications of cuprate superconductors. While disordered nanometric inclusions have shown to modify their vortex phase diagram and to produce enhancements of the critical current1,2, the effect of ordered oxide nanostructures remains essentially unexplored. This is due to the very small nanostructure size imposed by the short coherence length, and to the technological difficulties in the nanofabrication process. Yet, the novel phenomena occurring at oxide interfaces open a wide spectrum of technological opp…
Superconductor-ferromagnet (S-F) interfaces in two-dimensional (2D) heterostructures present a unique opportunity to study the interplay between superconductivity and ferromagnetism. The realization of such nanoscale heterostructures in van der Waals (vdW) crystals remains largely unexplored due to the challenge of making an atomically-sharp interface from their layered structures. Here, we build a vdW ferromagnetic Josephson junction (JJ) by inserting a few-layer ferromagnetic insulator Cr2Ge2Te6 into two layers of superconductor NbSe2. Owing to the remanent magnetic moment of the barrier, th…
A hysteretic in-plane magnetoresistance develops below the superconducting transition of LaAlO$_3$/SrTiO$_3$ interfaces for $\left|H_{/\!/}\right|<$ 0.15 T, independently of the carrier density or oxygen annealing. We show that this hysteresis arises from vortex depinning within a thin superconducting layer, in which the vortices are created by discrete ferromagnetic dipoles located solely above the layer. We find no evidence for finite-momentum pairing or bulk magnetism and hence conclude that ferromagnetism is strictly confined to the interface, where it competes with superconductivity.
We study the equilibrium domain structure and magnetic flux around a ferromagnetic (FM) film with perpendicular magnetization M_0 on a superconducting (SC) substrate. At 4πM_0<H_{c1} the SC is in the Meissner state and the equilibrium domain width in the film, l, scales as (l/4πλ_{L}) = (l_{N}/4πλ_{L})^{2/3} with the domain width on a normal (non-superconducting) substrate, l_{N}/4πλ_L >> 1. Here λ_L is the London penetration length. For 4πM_0 > H_{c1} and l_{N} in excess of about 35 λ_{L}, the domains are connected by SC vortices. We argue that pinning of vortices by magnetic domains in FM/SC…
The damping of the oscillations of a small permanent magnet (spherical shape, radius 0.1 mm) levitating between two parallel YBCO surfaces is measured as a function of oscillation amplitude and temperature. The losses in the samples (epitaxial thin films, bulk granular and bulk melt-textured) are analyzed in terms of oscillating shielding currents flowing through trapped flux lines whose motion gives rise to electric fields. We find dissipation to originate from different mechanisms of flux dynamics. At small amplitudes there is a linear regime described by a surface resistance varying from 10…
We study the vortex structure in a Pb film deposited on top of a periodic array of ferromagnetic square microrings by combining two high resolution imaging techniques: Bitter decoration and scanning Hall probe microscopy (SHPM). The periodicity and strength of the magnetic pinning potential generated by the square microrings are controlled by the magnetic history of the template. When the square rings are in the magnetized dipolar state, known as the onion state, the strong stray field generated at the domain walls prevents the decoration of vortices. SHPM images show that the stray field gene…
The screening currents induced in a superconducting film by a magnetic annulus whose magnetization is perpendicular to the superconductor are calculated. We show that close to the superconductor transition temperature $T_c$ particular values of the magnetization and radii of the annulus make the creation of superconducting vortices energy favorable. We also show that the magnetic annulus offers an alternative tool for vortex pinning in the superconductor. Statistical mechanical properties of this system are discussed.
The magnetic penetration depth $λ(T,H,j)$ was measured in the presence of a slowly relaxing supercurrent, $j$. In single crystal $\mathrm{Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_8}$ below approximately 25 K, $λ(T,H,j)$ is strongly hysteretic. We propose that the irreversibility arises from a shift of the vortex position within its pinning well as $j$ changes. The Campbell length depends upon the ratio $j/j_{c}$ where $j_{c}$ is the critical current defined through the Labusch parameter. Similar effects were observed in other cuprates and in an organic superconductor.
Applying the strong pinning formalism to the mixed state of a type II superconductor, we study the effect of thermal fluctuations (or creep) on the penetration of an ac magnetic field as quantified by the so-called Campbell length $λ_\textrm{C}$. Within strong pinning theory, vortices get pinned by individual defects, with the jumps in the pinning energy ($Δe_\mathrm{pin}$) and force ($Δf_\mathrm{pin}$) between bistable pinned and free states quantifying the pinning process. We find that the evolution of the Campbell length $λ_{\rm C}(t)$ as a function of time $t$ is the result of two competin…
In bilayers consisting of ferromagnetic and superconducting films, the ferromagnetic film in its domain state induces inhomogeneous distribution of magnetic fields in the superconducting film. When the ferromagnetic film has bubble magnetic domains in a labyrinth structure, it has been found that the pinning of the vortices increases; hence, the critical current of the superconducting film becomes larger. Here we study the effect of parallel ferromagnetic domain structure in Nb/SrRuO3 on the critical current of Nb with current flowing perpendicularly to the domains and find that in this case t…
Complex oxides exhibit a variety of unusual physical properties, which can be used for designing novel electronic devices. Here we fabricate and study experimentally nano-scale Superconductor/ Ferromagnet/Superconductor junctions with the high-Tc cuprate superconductor YBa2Cu3O7 and the colossal magnetoresistive (CMR) manganite ferromagnets LaXMnO3 (X: Ca or Sr). We demonstrate that in a broad temperature range the magnetization of a manganite nanoparticle, forming the junction interface, switches abruptly in a mono-domain manner. The CMR phenomenon translates the magnetization loop into a hys…
We theoretically investigate the magnetic-field and current distributions for coplanar superconducting strips with slits in an applied magnetic field H_a. We consider ideal strips with no bulk pinning and calculate the hysteretic behavior of the magnetic moment m_y as a function of H_a due solely to geometrical edge barriers. We find that the m_y-H_a curves are strongly affected by the slits. In an ascending field, the m_y-H_a curves exhibit kink or peak structures, because the slits prevent penetration of magnetic flux. In a descending field, m_y becomes positive, because magnetic flux is tra…
