Let O be a symplectic toric 2n-dimensional orbifold with a fixed T^n-action and with a toric Kahler metric g. We previously explored whether, when O is a manifold, the equivariant spectrum of the Laplace operator acting on smooth functions on (O,g) determines the moment polytope of O, and hence by Delzant's theorem determines O up to symplectomorphism. In the setting of toric orbifolds we significantly improve upon our previous results and show that the moment polytope of a generic toric orbifold is determined by its equivariant spectrum, up to two possibilities and up to translation. This involves developing the asymptotic expansion of the heat trace on an orbifold in the presence of an isometry. We also show that the equivariant spectrum determines whether the toric Kahler metric has constant scalar curvature.
A theorem of E.Lerman and S.Tolman, generalizing a result of T.Delzant, states that compact symplectic toric orbifolds are classified by their moment polytopes, together with a positive integer label attached to each of their facets. In this paper we use this result, and the existence of "global" action-angle coordinates, to give an effective parametrization of all compatible toric complex structures on a compact symplectic toric orbifold, by means of smooth functions on the corresponding moment polytope. This is equivalent to parametrizing all toric Kahler metrics and generalizes an analogous…
A symplectic toric orbifold is a compact connected orbifold $M$, a symplectic form $ω$ on $M$, and an effective Hamiltonian action of a torus $T$ on $M$, where the dimension of $T$ is half the dimension of $M$. We prove that there is a one-to-one correspondence between symplectic toric orbifolds and convex rational simple polytopes with positive integers attached to each facet.
In this note we prove that toric Kähler metrics on complex projective space which are also $U(n)$-invariant are determined by their equivariant spectrum i.e. the list of eigenvalues of the Laplacian together with weights of the torus representation on the eigenspaces.
In this short note, we investigate the existence of orbifold Kähler-Einstein metrics on toric varieties. In particular, we show that every $\mathbb{Q}$-factorial normal projective toric variety allows an orbifold Kähler-Einstein metric. Moreover, we characterize the K-stability of $\mathbb{Q}$-factorial toric pairs of Picard number one in terms of the log Cox ring and the universal orbifold cover.
In the first part of the paper, we build a foundation for further work on Hamiltonian actions on symplectic orbifolds. Most importantly we prove the orbifold versions of the abelian connectedness and convexity theorems. In the second half, we prove that compact symplectic orbifolds with completely integrable torus actions are classified by convex simple rational polytopes with a positive integer attached to each facet and that all such orbifolds are algebraic toric varieties.
In the classical theory of toric manifolds polytopes appear in two guises -- as Newton polytopes of line bundles on the complex, and as moment polytopes on the symplectic side, the link between the two being established by the prequantizability condition on the cohomology class of the symplectic form. Here we give a combinatorial description of the orbifold Picard group for complete toric orbifolds, with the aim of detailing the relation between complex and symplectic aspects in the orbifold setting. In particular this permits to illustrate the breakdown of identification of (orbifold) line bu…
We prove that any compact selfdual Einstein 4-orbifold of positive scalar curvature whose isometry group contains a 2-torus is, up to an orbifold covering, a quaternion Kaehler quotient of (k-1)-dimensional quaternionic projective space by a (k-2)-torus for some $k\geq 2$. We also obtain a topological classification in terms of the intersection form of the 4-orbifold.
Hypertoric varieties are hyperkähler analogues of toric varieties, and are constructed as abelian hyperkähler quotients of a quaternionic affine space. Just as symplectic toric orbifolds are determined by labelled polytopes, orbifold hypertoric varieties are intimately related to the combinatorics of hyperplane arrangements. By developing hyperkähler analogues of symplectic techniques developed by Goldin, Holm, and Knutson, we give an explicit combinatorial description of the Chen-Ruan orbifold cohomology of an orbifold hypertoric variety in terms of the combinatorial data of a rational coorie…
Equivariant quantization is a new theory that highlights the role of symmetries in the relationship between classical and quantum dynamical systems. These symmetries are also one of the reasons for the recent interest in quantization of singular spaces, orbifolds, stratified spaces... In this work, we prove existence of an equivariant quantization for orbifolds. Our construction combines an appropriate desingularization of any Riemannian orbifold by a foliated smooth manifold, with the foliated equivariant quantization that we built in \cite{PoRaWo}. Further, we suggest definitions of the comm…
Using mirror symmetry as described by Hori and Vafa, we compute the quantum equivariant cohomology ring of toric manifolds. This ring arises naturally in topological gauged sigma-models and is related to the Hamiltonian Gromov-Witten invariants of the target manifold.
We introduce an equivariant Pontrjagin-Thom construction which identifies equivariant cohomotopy classes with certain fixed point bordism classes. This provides a concrete geometric model for equivariant cohomotopy which works for any compact Lie group G. In the special case when G is finite or a torus, we show that our construction recovers the construction of Wasserman, providing a new perspective on equivariant bordism. We connect the results with bordisms of global quotient orbifolds, utilizing the machinery of Gepner-Henriques to describe bordisms of framed orbifolds in terms of equivaria…
We provide an explicit resolution of the existence problem for extremal Kaehler metrics on toric 4-orbifolds M with second Betti number b2(M)=2. More precisely we show that M admits such a metric if and only if its rational Delzant polytope (which is a labelled quadrilateral) is K-polystable in the relative, toric sense (as studied by S. Donaldson, E. Legendre, G. Szekelyhidi et al.). Furthermore, in this case, the extremal Kaehler metric is ambitoric, i.e., compatible with a conformally equivalent, oppositely oriented toric Kaehler metric, which turns out to be extremal as well. These results…
Let a compact Lie group act isometrically on a non-collapsing sequence of compact Alexandrov spaces with fixed dimension and uniform lower curvature and upper diameter bounds. If the sequence of actions is equicontinuous and converges in the equivariant Gromov--Hausdorff topology, then the limit space is equivariantly homeomorphic to spaces in the tail of the sequence. As a consequence, the class of Riemannian orbifolds of dimension $n$ defined by a lower bound on the sectional curvature and the volume and an upper bound on the diameter has only finitely many members up to orbifold homeomorphi…
In this paper, we give a new version of the modified Futaki invariant for a test configuration associated to the soliton action on a Fano manifold. Our version will naturally come from toric test configurations defined by Donaldson for toric manifolds. As an application, we show that the modified $K$-energy is proper for toric invariant Kähler potentials on a toric Fano manifold.
For (X,L) a polarized toric variety and G a torus of automorphisms of (X,L), denote by Y the GIT quotient X/G. We define a family of fully faithful functors from the category of torus equivariant reflexive sheaves on Y to the category of torus equivariant reflexive sheaves on X. We show, under a genericity assumption on G, that slope stability is preserved by these functors if and only if the pair ((X, L), G) satisfies a combinatorial criterion. As an application, when (X,L) is a polarized toric orbifold of dimension n, we relate stable equivariant reflexive sheaves on (X, L) to stable equivar…
For a proper, cocompact action by a locally compact group of the form $H \times G$, with $H$ compact, we define an $H \times G$-equivariant index of $H$-transversally elliptic operators, which takes values in $KK_*(C^*H, C^*G)$. This simultaneously generalises the Baum--Connes analytic assembly map, Atiyah's index of transversally elliptic operators, and Kawasaki's orbifold index. This index also generalises the assembly map to elliptic operators on orbifolds. In the special case where the manifold in question is a real semisimple Lie group, $G$ is a cocompact lattice and $H$ is a maximal comp…
We give an explicit local classification of conformally equivalent but oppositely oriented Kaehler metrics on a 4-manifold which are toric with respect to a common 2-torus action. In the generic case, these structures have an intriguing local geometry depending on a quadratic polynomial and two arbitrary functions of one variable, these two functions being explicit degree 4 polynomials when the Kaehler metrics are extremal (in the sense of Calabi). One motivation for and application of this result is an explicit local description of Einstein 4-manifolds which are hermitian with respect to eith…
The concept of orbifolds should unify differential geometry with equivariant homotopy theory, so that orbifold cohomology should unify differential cohomology with proper equivariant cohomology theory. Despite the prominent role that orbifolds have come to play in mathematics and mathematical physics, especially in string theory, the formulation of a general theory of orbifolds reflecting this unification has remained an open problem. Here we present a natural theory argued to achieve this. We give both a general abstract axiomatization in higher topos theory, as well as concrete models for or…
