The transient thermocapillary migration of drops with nontrivial deformation is studied. The finite difference method is employed to solve the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations coupled with the energy equation; the front-tracking method is adopted to track the moving deformable drop interface. In the hot region, deformations of drops increase with the decrease of interfacial tensions. In order to indicate the temperature impact on the interfacial tension, a local capillary number ($Ca_l$) is introduced. It is found that, when the drop density is smaller/larger than that of the bulk fluid, the drop velocity decreases/increases with the increase of the drop deformation.
The {\it unsteady} process for thermocapillary droplet migration at large Reynolds and Marangoni numbers has been previously reported by identifying a nonconservative integral thermal flux across the surface in the {\it steady} thermocapillary droplet migration, [Wu and Hu, J. Math. Phys. {\bf 54} 023102, (2013)]. Here we add a thermal source in the droplet to preserve the integral thermal flux across the surface as conservative, so that thermocapillary droplet migration at large Reynolds and Marangoni numbers can reach a {\it quasi-steady} process. Under assumptions of {\it quasi-steady} stat…
A numerical study on interactions of two spherical drops in thermocapillary migration in microgravity is presented. Finite-difference methods were adopted and the interfaces of drops were captured by the front-tracking technique. It is found that the arrangement of drops directly influences their migrations and interaction, and that the motion of one drop is mainly determined by the disturbed temperature field because of the existence of the other drop.
The steady thermocapillary droplet migration in a uniform temperature gradient combined with a radiation energy source at large Reynolds and Marangoni numbers is studied. To reach a terminal quasi-steady process, the magnitude of the radiation energy source is required to preserve the conservative integral thermal flux across the surface. Under the quasi-steady state assumption, an analytical result for the steady thermocapillary migration of a droplet at large Reynolds and Marangoni numbers is derived by using the method of matched asymptotic expansions. It is shown that the thermocapillary d…
In this paper, the overall steady-state momentum and energy balances in the thermocapillary migration of a droplet at small Reynolds numbers and large Marangoni numbers are investigated to confirm the quasi-steady state assumption of the system. The droplet is assumed to have a slight axisymmetric deformation from a sphere shape. It is shown that under the quasi-steady state assumption, the total momentum of the thermocapillary droplet migration system at small Reynolds numbers is conservative. The general solution of the steady momentum equations can be determined with its parameters dependin…
The overall {\it steady}-state energy balance with two phases in a flow domain requires that the change in energy of the domain is equal to the difference between the total energy entering the domain and that leaving the domain. From the condition, the integral thermal flux across the surface is studied for a {\it steady} thermocapillary drop migration in a flow field with uniform temperature gradient at small and large Marangoni (Reynolds) numbers. The drop is assumed to have only a slight axisymmetric deformation from a sphere. It is identified that a conservative/nonconservative integral th…
In this paper, thermocapillary migration of a planar droplet at moderate and large Marangoni numbers is investigated analytically and numerically. By using the dimension-analysis method, the thermal diffusion time scale is determined as the controlling one of the thermocapillary droplet migration system. During this time, the whole thermocapillary migration process is fully developed. By using the front-tracking method, the steady/unsteady states as the terminal ones at moderate/large Marangoni numbers are captured in a longer time scale than the thermal diffusion time scale. In the terminal s…
Thermocapillary migration of a planar non-deformable droplet in flow fields with two uniform temperature gradients at moderate and large Marangoni numbers is studied numerically by using the front-tracking method. It is observed that the thermocapillary motion of planar droplets in the uniform temperature gradients is steady at moderate Marangoni numbers, but unsteady at large Marangoni numbers. The instantaneous migration velocity at a fixed migration distance decreases with increasing Marangoni numbers. The simulation results of the thermocapillary droplet migration at large Marangoni number…
The long-duration fluid physics experiments on a thermocapillary-driven flow have been carried out on the Japanese experiment module 'Kibo' aboard the International Space Station (ISS) since 2008. In these experiments, various aspects of thermocapillary convection in a half-zone (HZ) liquid bridge of high Prandtl number fluid have been examined under the advantages of the long-duration high-quality microgravity environment. This fluid dynamics video introduce a pinch off of liquid bridge of 30 mm in diameter as a part of the on-orbit experiments. The effect of thermocapillary-driven flow on th…
The motion of a viscous droplet in unbounded Poiseuille flow under the combined influence of bulk-insoluble surfactant and linearly varying temperature field aligned in the direction of imposed flow is studied analytically. Neglecting fluid inertia, thermal convection and shape deformation, asymptotic analysis is performed to obtain the velocity of a force-free surfactant-laden droplet. The present study is focused on two limiting situations of surfactant transport: (i) small surface Peclet number, and (ii) high surface Peclet number. Thermocapillary-induced Marangoni stress, strength of which…
In this paper, we develop a phase-field model for binary incompressible (quasi-incompressible) fluid with thermocapillary effects, which allows for the different properties (densities, viscosities and heat conductivities) of each component while maintaining thermodynamic consistency. The governing equations of the model including the Navier-Stokes equations with additional stress term, Cahn-Hilliard equations and energy balance equation are derived within a thermodynamic framework based on entropy generation, which guarantees thermodynamic consistency. A sharp-interface limit analysis is carri…
A novel way to handle surface tension gradient driven flows is developed in the volume-of-fluid (VoF) framework. Using an open source Navier-Stokes solver, {\it Basilisk}, and the present formulation, we investigate thermocapillary migration of drops/bubbles in a surrounding medium. Several validation exercises have been performed, which demonstrate that the present solver is a robust one to investigate interfacial flows with variable surface tension. It is well known that it is a challenging task to numerically model the tangential and normal surface forces arising due to interfacial tension.…
In this fluid dynamics video, we show thermocapillary actuation of a binary drop of water and heptanol where the binary drop in motion takes on a UFO-like shape. On a parylene-coated silicon surface subjected to a linear temperature gradient, a pure heptanol droplet quickly moves to the cold side by the Marangoni stress, while a pure water droplet remains stuck due to a large contact angle hysteresis. When the water droplet was encapsulated by a thin layer of heptanol and thermally actuated, the binary droplet takes on a peculiar shape resembling an UFO, i.e. an "unidentified" floating object …
In this paper, we extend a lattice Boltzmann equation (LBE) with continuous surface fore (CSF) to simulate thermocapillary flows. The model is designed on our previous CSF LBE for athermal two phase flow, in which the interfacial tension forces and the Marangoni stresses as the results of the interface interactions between different phases are described by a conception of CSF. In this model, the sharp interfaces between different phases are separated by a narrow transition layers, and the kinetics and morphology evolution of phase separation would be characterized by an order parameter visa Ca…
Exploring and controlling the physical factors that determine the topography of thin liquid dielectric films are of interest in manifold fields of research in physics, applied mathematics, and engineering and have been a key aspect of many technological advancements. Visualization of thin liquid dielectric film topography and local thickness measurements are essential tools for characterizing and interpreting the underlying processes. However, achieving high sensitivity with respect to subnanometric changes in thickness via standard optical methods is challenging. We propose a combined imaging…
In Stokes flows, symmetry considerations dictate that a neutrally-buoyant spherical particle will not migrate laterally with respect to the local flow direction. We show that a loss of symmetry due to flow-induced surfactant redistribution leads to cross-stream drift of a spherical drop in Poiseuille flow. We derive analytical expressions for the migration velocity in the limit of small non-uniformities in the surfactant distribution, corresponding to weak-flow conditions or a high-viscosity drop. The analysis predicts that the direction of migration is always towards the flow centerline.
In the present study, we investigate the cross-stream migration of a deformable droplet suspended in a non-isothermal Poiseuille flow in the presence of bulk-insoluble surfactants. Owing to the non-linearity present in the system of governing equations, an asymptotic approach is adopted, in an effort to capture the intricate and non-trivial coupling between the various influencing parameters. With the assumption of negligible inertia in fluid flow and convective transport of thermal energy, we obtain the droplet migration velocity through small-deformation perturbation analysis for two differe…
We investigate the motion of a spherical drop in a general quadratic flow acted upon by an arbitrarily oriented externally applied uniform electric field. The drop and media are considered to be leaky dielectrics. The flow field affects the distribution of charges on the drop surface, which leads to alteration in the electric field, thereby affecting the velocity field through the Maxwell stress on the fluid-fluid interface. The two-way coupled electrohydrodynamics is central towards dictating the motion of the drop in the flow field. We analytically address the electric potential distribution…
We investigate the motion of a sedimenting spherical drop in the presence of an applied uniform electric field in an otherwise arbitrary direction in the limit of low surface charge convection. We analytically solve the electric potential in and around the leaky dielectric drop, and solve for the Stokesian velocity and pressure fields. We obtain the drop velocity through perturbations in powers of the electric Reynolds number which signifies the importance of the charge relaxation time scale as compared to the convective time scale. We show that in the presence of electric field either in the …
Understanding and modulating the cross-stream motion of a surfactant-coated droplet in pressure driven flow has great implications in many practical applications. A combination of interfacial viscosity and Marangoni stress acting over a surfactant-coated droplet in pressure driven flow offers greater flexibility to modulate the cross-stream motion of it. Despite the intense theoretical and numerical research towards manipulating the surfactant-laden Newtonian droplets in Poiseuille flow, the experimental investigations are seldom explored. Herein, we report our study on understanding the influ…
Dynamics of a droplet in oscillatory and pulsating flows of a Newtonian fluid in a microchannel has been studied numerically. The effects of oscillation frequency, surface tension, and channel flow rate have been explored by simulating the drop within a microchannel. These types of flows introduce new equilibrium positions for the drop compared to steady flows with similar conditions. The simulation results are very sensitive to the grid resolution due to the unsteady behavior of the base flow. Therefore, a set of fine grids have been used in this study to capture the physics of this problem m…
In this study we attempt to explore the consequences of surfactant coating on the electrohydrodynamic manipulation of a drop motion in a plane Poiseuielle flow. In addition we consider bulk insoluble surfactants and a linear dependency of the surface tension on the surfactant concentration. Subsequently a double asymptotic perturbation method is used in terms of small electric Reynolds number and capillary number in the limit of a diffusion-dominated surfactant transport mechanism. Also going beyond the widely employed axisymmetric framework, the coupled system of governing differential equati…
The motion of a viscous drop is investigated when the interface is fully covered with a stagnant layer of surfactant in an arbitrary unsteady Stokes flow for the low surface Péclet number limit. The effect of the interfacial slip coefficient on the behavior of the flow field is also considered. The hydrodynamic problem is solved by the solenoidal decomposition method and the drag force is computed in terms of Faxen's laws using a perturbation ansatz in powers of the surface Péclet number. The analytical expressions for the migration velocity of the drop are also obtained in powers of the surfa…
A surfactant-laden droplet of one fluid dispersed in another immiscible fluid serves as an artificial model system capable of mimicking microbial swimmers. Either an interfacial chemical reaction or the process of solubilization generates gradients in interfacial tension resulting in a Marangoni flow. The resulting fluid flow propels the droplet toward a region of lower interfacial tension. The advective transport of surfactants sustains the active propulsion of these droplets. In these systems, the local interfacial tension is affected by the interfacial reaction kinetics as well as convectio…
The migration of a Brownian fluid droplet in a parallel-plate microchannel was investigated using dissipative particle dynamics computer simulations. In a Newtonian solvent, the droplet migrated toward the channel walls due to inertial effects at the studied flow conditions, in agreement with theoretical predictions and recent simulations. However, the droplet focused onto the channel centerline when polymer chains were added to the solvent. Focusing was typically enhanced for longer polymers and higher polymer concentrations with a nontrivial flow-rate dependence due to droplet and polymer de…
We show that electrowetting (EW) with structured electrodes significantly modifies the distribution of drops condensing onto flat hydrophobic surfaces by aligning the drops and by enhancing coalescence. Numerical calculations demonstrate that drop alignment and coalescence are governed by the drop size-dependent electrostatic energy landscape that is imposed by the electrode pattern and the applied voltage. Such EW-controlled migration and coalescence of condensate drops significantly alter the statistical characteristics of the ensemble of droplets. The evolution of the drop size distribution…
Deformation-induced lateral migration of a bubble slowly rising near a vertical plane wall in a stagnant liquid is numerically and theoretically investigated. In particular, our focus is set on a situation with a short clearance $c$ between the bubble interface and the wall. Motivated by the fact that numerically and experimentally measured migration velocities are considerably higher than the velocity estimated by the available analytical solution using the Faxén mirror image technique for $a/(a+c)\ll 1$ (here $a$ is the bubble radius), when the clearance parameter $\varepsilon(= c/a)$ is com…
This work focuses on the dynamics of a train of unconfined bubbles flowing in microchan- nels. We investigate the transverse position of a train of bubbles, its velocity and the associated pressure drop when flowing in a microchannel depending on the internal forces due to viscosity, inertia and capillarity. Despite the small scales of the system, inertia, referred to as inertial migration force, play a crucial role in determining the transverse equilibrium position of the bubbles. Beside inertia and viscosity, other effects may also affect the transverse migration of bubbles such as the Maran…
Deformation and breakup of a ferrofluid compound droplet migrating in a microchannel under a magnetic field: A phase-field-based multiple-relaxation time lattice Boltzmann study
The motion of an initially spherical capsule in a wall-bounded oscillating shear flow is investigated via an accelerated boundary integral implementation. The neo-Hookean model is used as the constitutive law of the capsule membrane. The maximum wall-normal migration is observed when the oscillation period of the imposed shear is of the order of the relaxation time of the elastic membrane; hence, the optimal capillary number scales with the inverse of the oscillation frequency and the ratio agrees well with the theoretical prediction in the limit of high-frequency oscillation. The migration ve…
