Wave localization occurs in all types of vibrating systems, in acoustics, mechanics, optics, or quantum physics. It arises either in systems of irregular geometry (weak localization) or in disordered systems (Anderson localization). We present here a general theory that explains how the system geometry and the wave operator interplay to give rise to a "landscape" that splits the system into weakly coupled subregions, and how these regions shape the spatial distribution of the vibrational eigenmodes. This theory holds in any dimension, for any domain shape, and for all operators deriving from an energy form. It encompasses both weak and Anderson localizations in the same mathematical frame and shows, in particular, that Anderson localization can be understood as a special case of weak localization in a very rough landscape.
The localization subregions of stationary waves in continuous disordered media have been recently demonstrated to be governed by a hidden landscape that is the solution of a Dirichlet problem expressed with the wave operator. In this theory, the strength of Anderson localization confinement is determined by this landscape, and continuously decreases as the energy increases. However, this picture has to be changed in discrete lattices in which the eigenmodes close to the edge of the first Brillouin zone are as localized as the low energy ones. Here we show that in a 1D discrete lattice, the loc…
Eigenfunctions in inhomogeneous media can have strong localization properties. Filoche \& Mayboroda showed that the function $u$ solving $(-Δ+ V)u = 1$ controls the behavior of eigenfunctions $(-Δ+ V)ϕ= λϕ$ via the inequality $$|ϕ(x)| \leq λu(x) \|ϕ\|_{L^{\infty}}.$$ This inequality has proven to be remarkably effective in predicting localization and recently Arnold, David, Jerison, Mayboroda \& Filoche connected $1/u$ to decay properties of eigenfunctions. We aim to clarify properties of the landscape: the main ingredient is a localized variation estimate obtained from writing $ϕ(x)$ as an av…
We analyze functionals that characterize the distribution of eigenstates in Fock space through a tool derived from algebraic topology: persistent homology. Drawing on recent generalizations of the localization landscape applicable to mid-spectrum eigenstates, we introduce several novel persistent homology observables in the context of many-body localization that exhibit transitional behavior near the critical point. We demonstrate that the persistent homology approach to localization landscapes and, in general, functionals on the Fock space lattice offer insights into the structure of eigensta…
The localization landscape gives direct access to the localization of bottom-of-band eigenstates in non-interacting disordered systems. We generalize this approach to eigenstates at arbitrary energies in systems with or without internal degrees of freedom by introducing a modified $\mathcal{L}^2$-landscape, and we demonstrate its accuracy in a variety of archetypal models of Anderson localization in one and two dimensions. This $\mathcal{L}^2$-landscape function can be efficiently computed using hierarchical methods that allow evaluating the diagonal of a well-chosen Green function. We compare…
Anderson localization is a universal interference phenomenon occurring when a wave evolves through a random medium and it has been observed in a great variety of physical systems, either quantum or classical. The recently developed localization landscape theory offers a computationally affordable way to obtain useful information on the localized modes, such as their location or size. Here we examine this theory in the context of classical waves exhibiting high frequency localization and for which the original localization landscape approach is no longer informative. Using a Webster's transform…
We generalize the notion of "localization landscape," introduced by M. Filoche and S. Mayboroda [Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. USA 109, 14761 (2012)] for the single-particle Schrodinger operator, to a wide class of interacting many-body Hamiltonians. The many-body localization landscape (MBLL) is defined on a graph in the Fock space, whose nodes represent the basis vectors in the Fock space and edges correspond to transitions between the nodes connected by the hopping term in the Hamiltonian. It is shown that in analogy to the single-particle case, the inverse MBLL plays the role of an effective pote…
In the theory of Anderson localization, a landscape function predicts where wave functions localize in a disordered medium, without requiring the solution of an eigenvalue problem. It is known how to construct the localization landscape for the scalar wave equation in a random potential, or equivalently for the Schrödinger equation of spinless electrons. Here we generalize the concept to the Dirac equation, which includes the effects of spin-orbit coupling and allows to study quantum localization in graphene or in topological insulators and superconductors. The landscape function $u(r)$ is def…

Localization of electronic wave functions in modern two-dimensional (2D) materials such as graphene can impact drastically their transport and magnetic properties. The recent localization landscape (LL) theory has brought many tools and theoretical results to understand such localization phenomena in the continuous setting, but with very few extensions so far to the discrete realm or to tight-binding Hamiltonians. In this paper, we show how this approach can be extended to almost all known 2D~lattices, and propose a systematic way of designing LL even for higher dimension. We demonstrate in de…
We investigate the localization of waves in aperiodic structures that manifest the characteristic multiscale complexity of certain arithmetic functions with a central role in number theory. In particular, we study the eigenspectra and wave localization properties of tight-binding Schrödinger equation models with on-site potentials distributed according to the Liouville function $λ(n)$, the Möbius function $μ(n)$, and the Legendre sequence of quadratic residues modulo a prime (QRs). We employ Multifractal Detrended Fluctuation Analysis (MDFA) and establish the multifractal scaling properties of…
A recent theoretical breakthrough has brought a new tool, called \emph{localization landscape}, to predict the localization regions of vibration modes in complex or disordered systems. Here, we report on the first experiment which measures the localization landscape and demonstrates its predictive power. Holographic measurement of the static deformation under uniform load of a thin plate with complex geometry provides direct access to the landscape function. When put in vibration, this system shows modes precisely confined within the sub-regions delineated by the landscape function. Also the m…
The presence of disorder in semiconductors can dramatically change their physical properties. Yet, models faithfully accounting for it are still scarce and computationally inefficient. We present a mathematical and computational model able to simulate the optoelectronic response of semiconductor alloys of several tens of nanometer sidelength, while at the same time accounting for the quantum localization effects induced by the compositional disorder at the nano-scale. The model is based on a Wigner-Weyl analysis of the structure of electron and hole eigenstates in phase space made possible by …
In this paper, we study the wave transport and localization properties of novel aperiodic structures that manifest the intrinsic complexity of prime number distributions in imaginary quadratic fields. In particular, we address structure-property relationships and wave scattering through the prime elements of the nine imaginary quadratic fields (i.e., of their associated rings of integers) with class number one, which are unique factorization domains (UFDs). Our theoretical analysis combines the rigorous Green's matrix solution of the multiple scattering problem with the interdisciplinary metho…
Anderson localization (AL) phenomena usually exists in systems with random potential. However, disorder-free quantum many-body systems with local conservation can also exhibit AL or even many-body localization transition. In this work, we show that the AL phase exists in a modified Kondo lattice without external random potential. The density of state, inverse participation ratio and temperature-dependent resistance are computed by classical Monte Carlo simulation, which uncovers the AL phase from previously studied Fermi liquid and Mott insulator regime. The occurrence of AL roots from quenche…
We provide some analytical tests of the density of states estimation from the "localization landscape" approach of Ref. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 116, 056602 (2016)]. We consider two different solvable models for which we obtain the distribution of the landscape function and argue that the precise spectral singularities are not reproduced by the estimation of the landscape approach.
Wave localization is ubiquitous in disordered media -- from amorphous materials, where soft-mode localization is closely related to materials failure, to semi-conductors, where Anderson localization leads to metal-insulator transition. Our main understanding, though, is based on discrete models. Here, we provide a continuum perspective on the wave localization in two-phase disordered elastic media by studying the scalar wave equation with heterogeneous modulus and/or density. At low frequencies, soft modes arise as a result of disordered elastic modulus, which can also be predicted by the loca…
