The linear shift deterministic Y-channel is studied. That is, we have three users and one relay, where each user wishes to broadcast one message to each other user via the relay, resulting in a multi-way relaying setup. The cut-set bounds for this setup are shown to be not sufficient to characterize its capacity region. New upper bounds are derived, which when combined with the cut-set bounds provide an outer bound on the capacity region. It is shown that this outer bound is achievable, and as a result, the capacity region of the linear shift deterministic Y-channel is characterized.
The identification capacity is developed without randomization at neither the encoder nor the decoder. In particular, full characterization is established for the deterministic identification (DI) capacity for the Gaussian channel and for the general discrete memoryless channel (DMC) with and without constraints. Originally, Ahlswede and Dueck established the identification capacity with local randomness given at the encoder, resulting in a double exponential number of messages in the block length. In the deterministic setup, the number of messages scales exponentially, as in Shannon's transmi…
Identification capacities of randomized and deterministic identification were proved to exceed channel capacity for Gaussian channels \emph{with} channel side information (CSI). In this work, we extend deterministic identification to the block fading channels without CSI by applying identification codes for both channel estimation and user identification. We prove that identification capacity is asymptotically higher than transmission capacity even in the absence of CSI. And we also analyze the finite-length performance theoretically and numerically. The simulation results verify the feasibili…
We propose two modified versions of the classical gradient ascent method to compute the capacity of finite-state channels with Markovian inputs. For the case that the channel mutual information is strongly concave in a parameter taking values in a compact convex subset of some Euclidean space, our first algorithm proves to achieve polynomial accuracy in polynomial time and, moreover, for some special families of finite-state channels our algorithm can achieve exponential accuracy in polynomial time under some technical conditions. For the case that the channel mutual information may not be str…
In multi user Gaussian relay networks, it is desirable to transmit private information to each user as well as common information to all of them. However, the capacity region of such networks with both kinds of information is not easy to characterize. The prior art used simple linear deterministic models in order to approximate the capacities of these Gaussian networks. This paper discusses the capacity region of the deterministic Y-channel with private and common messages. In this channel, each user aims at delivering two private messages to the other two users in addition to a common message…
In this technical report, the capacity region of the two-user linear deterministic (LD) interference channel with noisy output feedback (IC-NOF) is fully characterized. This result allows the identification of several asymmetric scenarios in which implementing channel-output feedback in only one of the transmitter-receiver pairs is as beneficial as implementing it in both links, in terms of achievable individual rate and sum-rate improvements w.r.t. the case without feedback. In other scenarios, the use of channel-output feedback in any of the transmitter-receiver pairs benefits only one of th…
We characterize the capacity region of the symmetric injective K-user Deterministic Interference Channel (DIC) for all channel parameters. The achievable rate region is derived by first projecting the achievable rate region of Han-Kobayashi (HK) scheme, which is in terms of common and private rates for each user, along the direction of aggregate rates for each user (i.e., the sum of common and private rates). We then show that the projected region is characterized by only the projection of those facets in the HK region for which the coefficient of common rate and private rate are the same for …
We consider the arbitrarily varying Gaussian relay channel with sender frequency division. We determine the random code capacity, and establish lower and upper bounds on the deterministic code capacity. It is observed that when the channel input is subject to a low power limit, the deterministic code capacity may be strictly lower than the random code capacity, and the gap vanishes as the input becomes less constrained. A second model addressed in this paper is the general case of primitive arbitrarily varying relay channels. We develop lower and upper bounds on the random code capacity, and g…

We determine both the random code capacity region and the deterministic code capacity region of the arbitrarily varying multiple access channel (AVMAC) under input and state constraints. As in the single user case, the boundary of the deterministic code capacity region is a discontinuous function of the input constraint. For the AVMAC without constraints, the characterization due to Ahlswede and Cai is complete except for two cases, pointed out in the literature as an open problem. The missing piece is obtained as a special case of our results.
We study a deterministic approximation of the two-user multiple access wiretap channel. This approximation enables results beyond the recently shown $\tfrac{2}{3}$ secure degrees of freedom (s.d.o.f.) for the Gaussian multiple access channel. While the s.d.o.f. were obtained by real interference alignment, our approach uses signal-scale alignment. We show an achievable scheme which is independent of the rationality of the channel gains. Moreover, our result can differentiate between channel strengths, in particular between both users, and establishes a secrecy rate dependent on this difference…
Deterministic identification (DI) for the discrete-time Poisson channel, subject to an average and a peak power constraint, is considered. It is established that the code size scales as $2^{(n\log n)R}$, where $n$ and $R$ are the block length and coding rate, respectively. The authors have recently shown a similar property for Gaussian channels [1]. Lower and upper bounds on the DI capacity of the Poisson channel are developed in this scale. Those imply that the DI capacity is infinite in the exponential scale, regardless of the dark current, i.e., the channel noise parameter.
Deterministic identification (DI) is addressed for Gaussian channels with fast and slow fading, where channel side information is available at the decoder. In particular, it is established that the number of messages scales as $2^{n\log(n)R}$, where $n$ is the block length and $R$ is the coding rate. Lower and upper bounds on the DI capacity are developed in this scale for fast and slow fading. Consequently, the DI capacity is infinite in the exponential scale and zero in the double-exponential scale, regardless of the channel noise.
The capacity of the semi-deterministic relay channel (SD-RC) with non-causal channel state information (CSI) only at the encoder and decoder is characterized. The capacity is achieved by a scheme based on cooperative-bin-forward. This scheme allows cooperation between the transmitter and the relay without the need to decode a part of the message by the relay. The transmission is divided into blocks and each deterministic output of the channel (observed by the relay) is mapped to a bin. The bin index is used by the encoder and the relay to choose the cooperation codeword in the next transmissio…
The Wyner-Ahlswede-Körner (WAK) empirical-coordination problem where the encoders cooperate via a finite-capacity one-sided link is considered. The coordination-capacity region is derived by combining several source coding techniques, such as Wyner-Ziv (WZ) coding, binning and superposition coding. Furthermore, a semi-deterministic (SD) broadcast channel (BC) with one-sided decoder cooperation is considered. Duality principles relating the two problems are presented, and the capacity region for the SD-BC setting is derived. The direct part follows from an achievable region for a general BC tha…
Various applications of molecular communications (MC) are event-triggered, and, as a consequence, the prevalent Shannon capacity may not be the right measure for performance assessment. Thus, in this paper, we motivate and establish the identification capacity as an alternative metric. In particular, we study deterministic identification (DI) for the discrete-time Poisson channel (DTPC), subject to an average and a peak power constraint, which serves as a model for MC systems employing molecule counting receivers. It is established that the codebook size for this channel scales as $2^{(n\log n…
We address the arbitrarily varying channel (AVC) with colored Gaussian noise. The work consists of three parts. First, we study the general discrete AVC with fixed parameters, where the channel depends on two state sequences, one arbitrary and the other fixed and known. This model can be viewed as a combination of the AVC and the time-varying channel. We determine both the deterministic code capacity and the random code capacity. Super-additivity is demonstrated, showing that the deterministic code capacity can be strictly larger than the weighted sum of the parametric capacities. In the secon…
In this work, the role of unidirectional limited rate transmitter cooperation is studied in the case of the 2-user Z interference channel (Z-IC) with secrecy constraints at the receivers, on achieving two conflicting goals simultaneously: mitigating interference and ensuring secrecy. First, the problem is studied under the linear deterministic model. The achievable schemes for the deterministic model use a fusion of cooperative precoding and transmission of a jamming signal. The optimality of the proposed scheme is established for the deterministic model for all possible parameter settings usi…
This paper derives outer bounds on the secrecy capacity region of the 2-user Z interference channel (Z-IC) with rate-limited unidirectional cooperation between the transmitters. First, the model is studied under the linear deterministic setting. The derivation of the outer bounds on the secrecy capacity region involves careful selection of the side information to be provided to the receivers and using the secrecy constraints at the receivers in a judicious manner. To this end, a novel partitioning of the encoded messages and outputs is proposed for the deterministic model based on the strength…
The capacity of the semideterministic discrete memoryless broadcast channel (SD-BC) with partial message side-information (P-MSI) at the receivers is established. In the setting without a common message, it is shown that P-MSI to the stochastic receiver alone can increase capacity, whereas P-MSI to the deterministic receiver can only increase capacity if also the stochastic receiver has P-MSI. The latter holds only for the setting without a common message: if the encoder also conveys a common message, then P-MSI to the deterministic receiver alone can increase capacity. These capacity results …
