In order to better determine the large-scale 3D-structure of magnetic fields in spiral galaxies we present a Faraday rotation analysis of the edge-on spiral galaxy NGC 5775. Deep radio-continuum observations in total power and linear polarization were performed at 8.46 GHz with the VLA and the 100-m Effelsberg telescope. They were analyzed together with archival 4.86 and 1.49 GHz VLA-data. We thus can derive rotation measures from a comparison of three frequencies and determine the intrinsic magnetic field structure. A very extended halo is detected in NGC 5775, with magnetic field lines forming an X-shaped structure. Close to the galactic disk the magnetic field is plane-parallel. The scaleheights of the radio emission esimated for NGC 5775 are comaprable with other galaxies. The rotation measure distribution varies smoothly on both sides along the major axis from positive to negative values. From the derived distribution of rotation measures and the plane-parallel intrinsic magnetic field orientation along the galactic midplane we conclude that NGC 5775 has an 'even axisymmetric' large-scale magnetic field configuration in the disk as generated by an αΩ-dynamo which is accompanied by a quadrupolar poloidal field. The magnetic field lines of the plane-parallel component are pointing 'outwards'. The observed X-shaped halo magnetic field, however, cannot be explained by the action of the disk's mean-field dynamo alone. It is probably due to the influence of the galactic wind together with the dynamo action.
Star formation induced by a spiral shock wave, which in turn is generated by a spiral density wave, produces an azimuthal age gradient across the spiral arm, which has opposite signs on either side of the corotational resonance. An analysis of the spatial separation between young star clusters and nearby HII regions made it possible to determine the position of the corotation radius in the studied galaxies. Fourier analysis of the gas velocity field in the same galaxies independently confirmed the corotation radius estimates obtained by the morphological method presented here.
We investigate the spatial regularity in the distribution of the young stellar population along spiral arms of three late type spiral galaxies: NGC 895, NGC 5474, and NGC 6946. This study is based on an analysis of photometric properties of spiral arms using {\it GALEX} ultraviolet, optical UBVRI, Halpha, and 8mum {IRAC} infrared surface photometry data. Using the Fourier analysis approach, we found features of spatial regularity or quasi-regularity in the distribution of the young stellar population or (and) regular chains of star formation regions in all arms of NGC 895, NGC 5474, and NGC 69…
We estimate the vertical gradient of rotational velocity for several spiral galaxies in the framework of a global thin-disc model, using the approximation of quasi-circular orbits. We obtain gradients having a broad range of values, in agreement with measurements, for galaxies with both low and high gradients. To model the gradient, it suffices to know the rotation curve only. We illustrate, using the example of galaxy NGC 4302 with particularly high gradients, that mass models of galactic rotation curves that assume a significant spheroidal mass component reduce the predicted gradient value, …
NGC 4921 and 7049 are two spiral galaxies presenting narrow, distinct dust features. A detailed study of the morphology of those features has been carried out using Hubble Space Telescope archival images. NGC 4921 shows a few but well-defined dust arms midway to its centre while NGC 7049 displays many more dusty features, mainly collected within a ring-shaped formation. Numerous dark and filamentary structures, called outgrowths, are found to protrude from the dusty arms in both galaxies. The outgrowths point both outwards and inwards in the galaxies. Mostly they are found to be V-shaped or Y-…
The geometry and physics of the spiral structure of the giant Hubble type Sc galaxy NGC 309 is studied. A schematic of two patterns with three arms in each is suggested for the blue spiral. The red and blue patterns form together a grand design with two-fold symmetry. A possible gas-dynamics explanation of the phenomenon is suggested which shows how the two-arm red spiral may induce the formation of the six-arm coherent blue spiral. Key words: galaxies: individual (NGC 309) -- galaxies: spiral
We study the vertical gradient in azimuthal velocity of spiral galaxy NGC 4244 in a thin disk model. With surface density accounting for the rotation curve, we model the gradient properties in the approximation of quasi-circular orbits and find the predictions to be consistent with the gradient properties inferred from measurements. This consistency may suggest that the mass distribution in this galaxy is flattened.
We address the study of the \Ha\ vertical velocity field in a sample of four nearly face-on galaxies using long slit spectroscopy taken with the ISIS spectrograph attached to the WHT at the Roque de los Muchachos Observatory (Spain). The spatial structure of the velocity vertical component shows a radial corrugated pattern with spatial scales higher or within the order of { one} kiloparsec. The gas is mainly ionized by high-energy photons: only in some locations of NGC~278 and NGC~1058 is there some evidence of ionization by low-velocity shocks, which, in the case of NGC~278, could be due to m…
Observations that span a broad range of wavelengths are used to examine asymmetries in the disk of the nearby late-type spiral galaxy NGC 247. The northern spiral arm is over-luminous at all wavelengths when compared with other parts of the galaxy at similar galactocentric radii, while the density of very luminous red stars in the void that is immediately south of this arm matches that in other parts of the disk at the same galactocentric radius. Two bubbles with spatial extents of many kpc are identified in the disk, and many of the young stars in the southern disk of NGC 247 are located in t…
We utilize a suite of multiwavelength data, of 9 nearby spirals, to analyze the shock-induced star formation sequence, that may result from a constant spiral pattern speed. The sequence involves tracers as the HI, CO, 24um, and FUV, where the spiral arms were analyzed with Fourier techniques in order to obtain their azimuthal phases as a function of radius. It was found that only two of the objects, NGC 628 and NGC 5194, present coherent phases resembling the theoretical expectations, as indicated by the phase shifts of CO-24um. The evidence is more clear for NGC 5194, and moderate for NGC 628…
Relations between star formation rates along the spiral arms and the velocities of gas inflow into the arms in grand-design galaxy NGC 628 were studied. We found that the radial distribution of average star formation rate in individual star formation regions in regular spiral arms correlates with the velocity of gas inflow into the spiral arms. Both distributions have maxima at a galactocentric distance of 4.5-5 kpc. There are no correlations between the radial distributions of average star formation rate in star formation regions in spiral arms and outside spiral arms in the main disc. We als…
Accurate distances are fundamental to interpreting many measured properties of galaxies. Surprisingly, many of the best-studied spiral galaxies in the Local Volume have distance uncertainties that are much larger than can be achieved with modern observations. Using Hubble Space Telescope optical imaging, we use the tip of the red giant branch method to measure the distances to six galaxies that are included in the Spitzer Infrared Nearby Galaxies Survey (SINGS) program and its offspring surveys. The sample includes M63, M74, NGC 1291, NGC 4559, NGC 4625, and NGC 5398. We compare our results wi…
Generally, identifying the spiral arms of a spiral galaxy is not a hard task. However, defining the main characteristics, width and length of those structure is not a common task. Previous studies have used different tracers: Star clusters, Massers, H$α$. It was until recently that individual stars were used as tracers of spiral structures. The basic method of measuring the width of spiral arms assumes a Gaussian distribution around the mean concentration, either of gas or other tracer. In this work we use NGC 5236's stars as tracers. We estimated the surface stellar density of arms and inter-…
Theories that attempt to explain the dynamical relationship between bar and spiral patterns in galactic disks make different predictions about the radial profile of the pattern speed. These are tested for the H-alpha bar and spiral patterns of NGC 1365. The radial profile of the pattern speed is measured by fitting mathematical models that are based on the Tremaine-Weinberg method. The results show convincing evidence for the bar rotating at a faster rate than the spiral pattern, inconsistent with a global wave mode or a manifold. There is evidence for mode coupling of the bar and spiral patte…
We present VLA H I and 6 cm radio continuum observations of the spiral NGC 3145 and H I observations of its two companions, NGC 3143 and PGC 029578. In optical images NGC 3145 has stellar arms that appear to cross, forming "X"-features. Our radio continuum observations rule out shock fronts at 3 of the 4 "X"-features. In the middle-to-outer disk, the H I line-profiles of NGC 3145 are skewed. Relative to the disk, the gas in the skewed wing of the line-profiles has z-motions away from us on the approaching side of the galaxy and z-motions of about the same magnitude (about 40 km/s) towards us o…
We conduct spectral line survey observations in the 3 mm band toward a spiral arm, a bar-end, and a nuclear region of the nearby barred spiral galaxy NGC 3627 with the IRAM 30 m telescope and the Nobeyama 45 m telescope. Additional observations are performed toward the spiral arm and the bar-end in the 2 mm band. We detect 8, 11, and 9 molecular species in the spiral arm, the bar-end, and the nuclear region, respectively. Star-formation activities are different among the three regions, and in particular, the nucleus of NGC 3627 is known as a LINER/Seyfert 2 type nucleus. In spite of these phys…
The spatial distribution of oxygen in the interstellar medium of galaxies is the key to understanding how efficiently metals that are synthesized in massive stars can be redistributed across a galaxy. We present here a case study in the nearby spiral galaxy NGC1365 using 3D optical data obtained in the TYPHOON Program. We find systematic azimuthal variations of the HII region oxygen abundance imprinted on a negative radial gradient. The 0.2 dex azimuthal variations occur over a wide radial range of 0.3 to 0.7 R25 and peak at the two spiral arms in NGC1365. We show that the azimuthal variations…
We report one of the first extragalactic observations of electron temperature variations across a spiral arm. Using MUSE mosaic observations of the nearby galaxy NGC 1672, we measure the [N II]5755 auroral line in a sample of 80 HII regions in the eastern spiral arm of NGC1672. We discover systematic temperature variations as a function of distance perpendicular to the spiral arm. The electron temperature is lowest on the spiral arm itself and highest on the downstream side. Photoionization models of different metallicity, pressure, and age of the ionizing source are explored to understand wha…

We present dust polarization and CO molecular line images of NGC 7538 IRS1. We combined data from the SMA, CARMA and JCMT telescopes to make images with 2.5 arcsec resolution at 230 and 345 GHz. The images show a remarkable spiral pattern in both the dust polarization and molecular outflow. These data dramatically illustrate the interplay between a high infall rate onto IRS1 and a powerful outflow disrupting the dense, clumpy medium surrounding the star. The images of the dust polarization and the CO outflow presented here provide observational evidence for the exchange of energy and angular m…
We report the detection of two dwarf galaxies in a projected distance of ~50 kpc from NGC 7331 and suspect the physical nature of dwarfs of this spiral galaxy.
Multiple molecular lines with radiative transfer modelling are a powerful tool to probe the physics of star-forming gas in galaxies. We investigate the gas properties in the centre of the spiral galaxy NGC 2903 using low-J CO lines, i.e. 12CO(1-0), 12CO(2-1), 12CO(3-2), 13CO(1-0), and HCN(1-0). We apply a nonlocal thermodynamic equilibrium radiative transfer code to derive beam-averaged molecular gas properties. We use two methods (i.e. chi-square minimizations and likelihood) to define the best model representing the observed line ratios best. The line ratio diagnostics suggest that CO gas in…
Based on CO(2-1) public data, we study the monoxide oxygen gas excitation conditions and the magnetic field strength of NGC 2841, NGC 3077, NGC 3184, NGC 3351 spiral galaxies. For their galaxy outskirts, we found kinetic temperatures in the range of $35 - 38 ~K$, CO column densities $10^{15} - 10^{16} ~cm^{-2}$ and H2 masses of $4 ~10^6 - 6 ~ 10^8 M_\odot$. An H2 density 1$0^3 cm^{-3}$ is suitable to explain the 2 sigma upper limits of the CO(2-1) line intensity. We constrain the magnetic field strength for our sample of spiral galaxies and their outskirts, evaluating a simplified expression o…
Many spiral galaxy haloes show stellar streams with various morphologies when observed with deep images. The origin of these tidal features is discussed, either coming from a satellite infall or caused by residuals of an ancient, gas-rich major merger. By modelling the formation of the peculiar features observed in the NGC 4013 halo, we investigate their origin. By using GADGET -2 with implemented gas cooling, star formation, and feedback, we have modelled the overall NGC 4013 galaxy and its associated halo features. A gas-rich major merger occurring 2.7-4.6 Gyr ago succeeds in reproducing the…
We present a detailed study of the flocculent spiral galaxy NGC 7793, part of the Sculptor group. By analyzing the resolved stellar populations of the galaxy, located at a distance of ~3.7 Mpc, we infer for the first time its radial star formation history (SFH) from Hubble Space Telescope photometry, thanks to both archival and new data from the Legacy ExtraGalactic UV Survey. We determine an average star formation rate (SFR) for the galaxy portion covered by our F555W and F814W data of 0.23 +- 0.02 Msun/yr over the whole Hubble time, corresponding to a total stellar mass of 3.09 +- 0.33 x 10^…
We present the results of CO(J=3-2) on-the-fly mappings of two nearby non-barred spiral galaxies NGC 628 and NGC 7793 with the Atacama Submillimeter Telescope Experiment at an effective angular resolution of 25". We successfully obtained global distributions of CO(J=3-2) emission over the entire disks at a sub-kpc resolution for both galaxies. We examined the spatially-resolved (sub-kpc) relationship between CO(J=3-2) luminosities (L'CO(3-2)) and infrared (IR) luminosities (LIR) for NGC 628, NGC 7793, and M 83, and compared it with global luminosities of JCMT Nearby Galaxy Legacy Survey sample…
The dwarf galaxy NGC 247, located in the Sculptor Filament, displays an apparent void on the north side of its spiral disk. The existence of the void in the disk of this dwarf galaxy has been known for some time, but the exact nature and cause of this strange feature has remained unclear. We investigate the properties of the void in the disk of NGC 247 using photometry of archival Hubble Space Telescope data to analyze the stars in and around this region. Based on a grid of isochrones from log(t)=6.8 to log(t)=10.0, we assign ages using nearest-neighbor interpolation. Examination of the spatia…
Spectroscopic observations of 63 HII regions in six spiral galaxies (NGC 628, NGC 783, NGC 2336, NGC 6217, NGC 7331, and NGC 7678) were carried out with the 6-meter telescope (BTA) of Russian Special Astrophysical Observatory with the Spectral Camera attached to the focal reducer SCORPIO in the multislit mode with a dispersion of 2.1A/pixel and a spectral resolution of 10A. These observations were used to estimate the oxygen and nitrogen abundances and the electron temperatures in HII regions through the recent variant of the strong line method (NS calibration). The parameters of the radial di…
New deep VLA D array HI observations of the highly inclined nearby spiral galaxy NGC 2683 are presented. Archival C array data were processed and added to the new observations. To investigate the 3D structure of the atomic gas disk, we made different 3D models for which we produced model HI data cubes. The main ingredients of our best-fit model are (i) a thin disk inclined by 80 degrees; (ii) a crude approximation of a spiral and/or bar structure by an elliptical surface density distribution of the gas disk; (iii) a slight warp in inclination; (iv) an exponential flare; and (v) a low surface-d…
We have measured the positions of large numbers of H II regions in four nearly face-on, late-type, spiral galaxies: NGC 628 (M 74), NGC 1232, NGC 3184 and NGC 5194 (M 51). Fitting log-periodic spiral models to segments of each arm yields local estimates of spiral pitch angle and arm width. While pitch angles vary considerably along individual arms, among arms within a galaxy, and among galaxies, we find no systematic trend with galactocentric distance. We estimate the widths of the arm segments from the scatter in the distances of the H II regions from the spiral model. All major arms in these…
We present the first analysis of the stellar content of the structures and substructures identified in the peculiar star-forming galaxy NGC5474, based on Hubble Space Telescope resolved photometry from the LEGUS survey. NGC5474 is a satellite of the giant spiral M101, and is known to have a prominent bulge that is significantly off-set from the kinematic center of the underlying HI and stellar disc. The youngest stars (age~ 100 Myr) trace a flocculent spiral pattern extending out to ~8 kpc from the center of the galaxy. On the other hand intermediate-age (age > 500 Myr) and old (age > 2 Gyr) s…
We analyzed the data of Stokes $I$, $Q$, and $U$ in C- and X-bands and investigated the large-scale magnetic field structure of NGC 3627. The polarization intensity and angle in each band were derived using Stokes $Q$ and $U$ maps. The rotation measure was calculated using the polarization-angle maps. Moreover, the magnetic field strength was calculated by assuming energy equipartition with the cosmic ray electrons. The structure of the magnetic field was well aligned with the spiral arms, which were consistent with those in the former studies. We applied the magnetic vector reconstruction met…
Deep JHK-Brg photometry of the southern arm of the grand-design spiral galaxy NGC 2997 was obtained by ISAAC/VLT. All sources in the field brighter than K=19 mag were located. Color-color diagrams were used to identify young stellar complexes among the extended sources. Ages can be estimated for the youngest complexes and correlated with azimuthal distances from the spiral arms defined by the K-band intensity variation. The extended sources with Mk <-12 mag display a diffuse appearance and are more concentrated inside the arm region than fainter ones, which are compact and uniformly distribute…
The spiral structure of the Milky Way is highly uncertain and is the subject of much discussion nowadays. We present the first result from a program that determines the properties of the Local spiral arm (LOA), together with a full description of the program. In this context we have made a comprehensive study of the young LOA open cluster NGC 2302, which includes a UBVRI photometric analysis and determination of its kinematic properties - proper motion and radial velocity - and of its orbital parameters. We determined the mean PM of NGC 2302 relative to the local field of disk stars, and, thro…
We resolve a significant fraction of globular clusters (GCs) in NGC 4921, the brightest spiral galaxy in Coma. Also we find a number of extended bright star clusters (star complexes) in the spur region of the arms. The latter are much brighter and bluer than those in the normal star-forming region, being as massive as 3x10^5 M_odot. The color distribution of the GCs in this galaxy is found to be bimodal. The turnover magnitudes of the luminosity functions (LF) of the blue (metal-poor) GCs (0.70<(V-I)<1.05) in the halo are estimated to be V(max) =27.11+-0.09 mag and I(max)=26.21+-0.11 mag. We o…
We present a new catalog of 81 ancient globular clusters (GCs) in the early-type spiral (SB0/a) galaxy NGC 1291. Candidates have been selected from B,V, and I band images taken with the Hubble Space Telescope, which also reveal 17 younger (t < few x 100Myr) clusters. The luminosity function shows a peaked shape similar to that found for GC systems in other spiral and elliptical galaxies. The ancient clusters have a bimodal color distribution, with approximately 65% (35%) of the population having blue (red) colors. The red, presumably metal-rich GCs are more centrally concentrated, as expected …
Using observational data, we build numerical N-body, hydrodynamical and combined equilibrium models for the spiral galaxy NGC 5247. The models turn out to be unstable towards spiral structure formation. We simulate scenarios of spiral structure formation for different sets of equilibrium rotation curves, radial velocity dispersion profiles and disk thickness and demonstrate that in all cases a simulated spiral pattern qualitatively agrees with the observed morphology of NGC 5247. We also demonstrate that an admixture of a gaseous component with mass of about a few percent of the total mass of …
We present an analysis of physical and morphological properties of an interacting pair of dwarf galaxies UGC 4703 located at the vicinity of an isolated Milky-Way (MW) type spiral galaxy NGC 2718. Based on the comparison of physical and morphological properties with that of the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds (LMC and SMC), we report that the UGC 4703 pair-NGC 2718 system is probably an LMC-SMC-MW analogue. Located at a sky projected distance of 81 kpc from NGC 2718, we find that UGC 4703 is clearly interacting with its nearby smaller mass companion UGC 4703B forming a bridge of stellar stre…
We present a multi-frequency study of the intermediate spiral SAB(r)bc type galaxy NGC 6744, using available data from the Chandra X-Ray telescope, radio continuum data from the Australia Telescope Compact Array and Murchison Widefield Array, and Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer infrared observations. We identify 117 X-ray sources and 280 radio sources. Of these, we find nine sources in common between the X-ray and radio catalogues, one of which is a faint central black hole with a bolometric radio luminosity similar to the Milky Way's central black hole. We classify 5 objects as supernova …
The relative contribution of various physical processes to the spatial and temporal distribution of molecular clouds and star-forming regions in the disks of galaxies has not been fully studied. The spatial regularity in the distribution of the young stellar population in spiral and ring structures is a good test to study this contribution. We investigate photometric properties of the ring and spiral arms in the barred spiral galaxy NGC 6217 based on analysis of GALEX ultraviolet, optical UBVRI and Halpha surface photometry data. The ring in the galaxy is located near the corotation area. A sp…
Turbulence plays an important role in the structure and dynamics of the galaxy and influences various processes therein including star formation. In this work, we investigate the large scale turbulence properties of the external spiral galaxy NGC 5236. We combine the VLA multi-configuration archival data with the new GMRT observation to estimate the column density and line of sight velocity fluctuation power spectra for this galaxy over almost two decades of length scales. The energy input scale to the ISM turbulence is found to be around $6$ kpc. Power spectra of the two-dimensional turbulenc…
We present a study of complexes of young massive star clusters (YMCs), embedded in extragalactic giant HII regions, based on the coupling of spectroscopic with photometric and spectrophotometric observations of about 100 star forming regions in seven spiral galaxies (NGC 628, NGC 783, NGC 2336, NGC 6217, NGC 6946, NGC 7331, and NGC 7678). The complete observational database has been observed and accumulated within the framework of our comprehensive study of extragalactic star forming regions. The current paper presents the last part of either unpublished or refreshed photometric and spectropho…
We present AKARI near- to far-infrared images of the nearby edge-on spiral galaxy NGC 3079 in 10 photometric bands. The spectral energy distribution consists of continuum emission from dust with a single temperature of 28-33 K together with strong mid-infrared emission features from polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). We derive the dust masses of 5.6x10^6 M_sun and 1.4x10^7 M_sun for the central 4 kpc region and the whole galaxy, respectively, and find that a gas-to-dust mass ratio is unusually high in the central region (\sim 1100) and even for the whole galaxy (\sim 860). The ratio of t…
We present a far-UV (FUV) and near-UV (NUV) imaging study of recent star formation in the nearby spiral galaxy NGC 2336 using the Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope (UVIT). NGC 2336 is nearly face-on in morphology and has a multi-armed, branching spiral structure which is associated with star forming regions distributed mainly along the spiral arms and the co-rotation ring around the bar. We have identified 72 star forming knots in the disk, of which only two are in the inter-arm regions and 6 in the co-rotation ring. We have tabulated their positions and estimated their luminosities, sizes, star f…
We present the highest-resolution study to date of the ISM in galaxies undergoing ram pressure stripping, using HST BVI imaging of NGC 4522 and NGC 4402, Virgo Cluster spirals that are well-known to be experiencing ICM ram pressure. We find that throughout most of both galaxies, the main dust lane has a fairly well-defined edge, with a population of GMC-sized (tens- to hundreds-of-pc scale), isolated, highly extincting dust clouds located up to ~1.5 kpc radially beyond it. Outside of these dense clouds, the area has little or no diffuse dust extinction, indicating that the clouds have decouple…
Aims: To gain insight into the expected gas dynamics at the interface of the Galactic bar and spiral arms in our own Milky Way galaxy, we examine as an extragalactic counterpart the evidence for multiple distinct velocity components in the cold, dense molecular gas populating a comparable region at the end of the bar in the nearby galaxy NGC3627. Methods: We assemble a high resolution view of molecular gas kinematics traced by CO(2-1) emission and extract line-of-sight velocity profiles from regions of high and low gas velocity dispersion. Results: The high velocity dispersions arise with ofte…
We present a far-UV (FUV) study of the star-forming complexes (SFCs) in three nearby galaxies using the Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope (UVIT). The galaxies are close to face-on and show significant outer disk star formation. Two of them are isolated (NGC 628, NGC 6946), and one is interacting with distant companions (NGC 5457). We compared the properties of the SFCs inside and outside the optical radius (R$_{25}$). We estimated the sizes, star formation rates (SFRs), metallicities, and the Toomre Q parameter of the SFCs. We find that the outer disk SFCs are at least ten times smaller in area th…
We describe and constrain the origins of ISM structures likely created by ongoing ICM ram pressure stripping in two Virgo Cluster spirals, NGC 4522 and NGC 4402, using HST BVI images of dust extinction and stars, as well as supplementary HI, Halpha, and radio continuum images. This is the highest-resolution study to date of the physical processes that occur during an ICM-ISM ram pressure stripping interaction, ram pressure stripping's effects on the multi-phase, multi-density ISM, and the formation and evolution of ram-pressure-stripped tails. In dust extinction, we view the leading side of NG…
We present observations of an H$α$ emitting knot in the thick disk of NGC 4013, demonstrating it is an H II region surrounding a cluster of young hot stars $z = 860$ pc above the plane of this edge-on spiral galaxy. With LBT/MODS spectroscopy we show this H II region has an H$α$ luminosity $\sim 4$ - 7 times that of the Orion nebula, with an implied ionizing photon production rate $\log Q_0 \gtrsim 49.4$ (photons s$^{-1}$). HST/WFPC2 imaging reveals an associated blue continuum source with $M_{V} = -8.21\pm0.24$. Together these properties demonstrate the H II region is powered by a young clust…
The Sa spiral NGC 4138 is known to host two counter-rotating stellar disks, with the ionized gas co-rotating with one of them. We measured the kinematics and properties of the two counter-rotating stellar populations to constrain their formation scenario. A spectroscopic decomposition of the observed major-axis spectrum was performed to disentangle the relative contribution of the two counter-rotating stellar and one ionized-gas components. The line-strength indices of the two counter-rotating stellar components were measured and modeled with single stellar population models that account for t…
The Virgo cluster of galaxies provides excellent conditions for studying interactions of galaxies with the cluster environment. Both the high-velocity tidal interactions and effects of ram pressure stripping by the intracluster gas can be investigated in detail. We extend our systematic search for possible anomalies in the magnetic field structures of Virgo cluster spirals in order to characterize a variety of effects and attribute them to different disturbing agents. Six angularly large Virgo cluster spiral galaxies (NGC4192, NGC4302, NGC4303, NGC4321, NGC4388, and NGC4535) were targets of a …
We report on the detection of a stellar halo around NGC 1560, a 10^9 Mo spiral galaxy member of the Maffei group. We obtained deep images in the r and i bands using the 10.4m Gran Telescopio Canarias in a field centered at ~ 3.7 arcmin (projected distance of 3.5 kpc) from the center of this galaxy. The luminosity function and the CMD show a clear excess of stars with respect to the expected foreground level at magnitudes fainter than the RGB tip at the distance of NGC 1560. The color of the halo stars implies a metallicity of Z ~ Zo/50, while their counts correspond to a stellar mass of ~ 10^7…
We present IRAM 30m observations of molecular lines of CO and its isotopologues from the massive spiral galaxy NGC 5908 selected from the CGM-MASS sample. $^{12}$CO $J=1-0$, $^{12}$CO $J=2-1$, and $^{13}$CO $J=1-0$ lines have been detected in most of the positions along the galactic disk. The total molecular gas mass of NGC 5908 is $\sim7\times10^9\rm~M_\odot$ and the total cool gas mass adding atomic hydrogen is $\sim1.3\times10^{10}\rm~M_\odot$, comparable to the upper limit of the mass of the X-ray emitting hot gas in the halo. Modeling the rotation curves constructed with all three CO line…
NGC 1097 is a nearby barred spiral galaxy believed to be interacting with the elliptical galaxy NGC 1097A located to its northwest. It hosts a Seyfert 1 nucleus surrounded by a circumnuclear starburst ring. Two straight dust lanes connected to the ring extend almost continuously out to the bar. The other ends of the dust lanes attach to two main spiral arms. To provide a physical understanding of its structural and kinematical properties, two-dimensional hydrodynamical simulations have been carried out. Numerical calculations reveal that many features of the gas morphology and kinematics can b…
We present a harmonic expansion of the observed line-of-sight velocity field as a method to recover and investigate spiral structures in the nuclear regions of galaxies. We apply it to the emission-line velocity field within the circumnuclear starforming ring of NGC1097, obtained with the GMOS-IFU spectrograph. The radial variation of the third harmonic terms are well described by a logarithmic spiral, from which we interpret that the gravitational potential is weakly perturbed by a two-arm spiral density wave with inferred pitch angle of of 52+/-4 degrees. This interpretation predicts a two-a…
We review Foyle et al. (2011) previous results, by applying a Fourier intensity phases method to a nine object sample of galaxies. It was found that two of the objects (NGC 628 and NGC 5194), with strong two-arm patterns, present positive evidence for long-lived spirals. Only one of the objects (NGC 3627) shows the contrary evidence. As determined by an analysis of resolved mass maps, the rest of the objects can not be included in the analysis because they belong to flocculent and multi-arm type of spiral arms, which are not described by density wave theory.
