We show that statistics is crucial for the instability problem derived from higher time derivatives. In fact, and contrary to previous statements, we check that when dealing with Fermi systems, the Hamiltonian is well bounded and the quantum states are normalizable. Although, ghost states are still present, they do not affect unitarity under certain conditions. We first analyze a quantum oscillator involving Grassman variables and then we generalize it to a Dirac field. Finally, we discuss some physical implications
The complete form of the amplitude of one closed string Ramond-Ramond (RR), two fermionic strings and one scalar field in IIB superstring theory has been computed in detail. Deriving $<V_{C}V_{\barψ}V_ψ V_ϕ>$ by using suitable gauge fixing, we discover some new vertices and their higher derivative corrections. We investigate both infinite gauge and scalar $u-$channel poles of this amplitude. In particular, by using the fact that the kinetic term of fermion fields has no correction, employing Born-Infeld action, the Wess-Zumino terms and their higher derivative corrections, we discover all infi…
We discuss a covariant extension of interactions between scalar fields and fermions in a flat space-time. We show, in a covariant theory, how to evade fermionic ghosts appearing because of the extra degrees of freedom behind a fermionic nature even in the Lagrangian with first derivatives. We will give a concrete example of a quadratic theory with up to the first derivative of multiple scalar fields and a Weyl fermion. We examine not only the maximally degenerate condition, which makes the number of degrees of freedom correct, but also a supplementary condition guaranteeing that the time evolu…
In literature one can find many generalizations of the usual Leibniz derivative, such as Jackson derivative, Tsallis derivative and Hausdorff derivative. In this article we present a connection between Jackson derivative and recently proposed Hausdorff derivative. On one hand, the Hausdorff derivative has been previously associated with non-extensivity in systems presenting fractal aspects. On the other hand, the Jackson derivative has a solid mathematical basis because it is the $\overline{q}$-analog of the ordinary derivative and it also arises in quantum calculus. From a quantum deformed $\…
We find the entire form of the amplitude of two fermion strings (with different chirality), a massless scalar field and one closed string Ramond-Ramond (RR) in IIA superstring theory which is different from its IIB one. We make use of a very particular gauge fixing and explore several new couplings in IIA. All infinite $u$- channel scalar poles and $t,s$- channel fermion poles are also constructed. We find new form of higher derivative corrections to two fermion two scalar couplings and show that the first simple $(s+t+u)-$ channel scalar pole for $p+2=n$ case can be obtained by having new hig…
The noncommutative (NC) massive quantum electrodynamics in $2+1$ dimensions is considered. We show explicitly that the one-loop effective action arising from the integrating out the fermionic fields leads to the ordinary NC Chern-Simons and NC Maxwell action at the long wavelength limit (large fermion mass). In the next to leading order, the higher-derivative contributions to NC Chern-Simons are obtained. Moreover, the gauge invariance of the outcome action is carefully discussed. We then consider the higher-derivative modification into the pure NC Chern-Simons Lagrangian density and evaluate …
In this work, we systematically analyze higher derivative terms in the supersymmetric effective actions for three dimensional scalar field theories using $\mathcal{N} =1$ superspace formalism. In these effective actions, we show that auxiliary fields do not propagate and their effective actions can be expressed in terms of the physical fields. So, the theory does not change its field content upon addition of higher derivative terms. We use derivative expansion to generate four, five and six dimensional terms for an interacting scalar field theory with $\mathcal{N} =1$ supersymmetry. We show th…
By dealing with the evaluation of string theory correlators of $<V_C V_T V_{\barΨ} V_Ψ>$, the complete and closed form of the amplitude of two fermion fields, one tachyon and one closed string Ramond-Ramond field in type IIB superstring theory is found. Specifically by comparing infinite tachyon poles in field theory amplitude with infinite tachyon poles of the S-matrix of string amplitude (for $p+1=n$ case), all the infinite higher derivative corrections of two tachyons and two fermions (in type IIB) to all orders of $α'$ have been discovered. Using these new couplings, we are able to produce…
We consider the distribution of the complex phase of the fermion determinant in QCD at nonzero chemical potential and examine the physical conditions under which the distribution takes a Gaussian form. We then calculate the baryon number as a function of the complex phase of the fermion determinant and show 1) that the exponential cancellations produced by the sign problem take the form of total derivatives 2) that the full baryon number is orthogonal to this noise. These insights allow us to define a self-consistency requirement for measurements of the baryon number in lattice simulations.
When global symmetries are spontaneously broken in supersymmetric vacua, there appear quasi-Nambu-Goldstone (NG) fermions as superpartners of NG bosons. In addition to these, there can appear quasi-NG bosons in general. The quasi-NG bosons and fermions together with the NG bosons are organized into chiral multiplets. Kähler potentials of low-energy effective theories were constructed some years ago as supersymmetric nonlinear realizations. It is known that higher derivative terms in the superfield formalism often encounter with the auxiliary field problem; the auxiliary fields are acted by spa…
We zoom in on the microscopic dynamics for fermions and quantum gravity within the asymptotic-safety paradigm. A key finding of our study is the unavoidable presence of a nonminimal derivative coupling between the curvature and fermion fields in the ultraviolet. Its backreaction on the properties of the Reuter fixed point remains small for finite fermion numbers within a bounded range. This constitutes a nontrivial test of the asymptotic-safety scenario for gravity and fermionic matter, additionally supplemented by our studies of the momentum-dependent vertex flow which indicate the subleading…
Working to lowest non-trivial order in fermions, we consider the four-derivative order corrected Lagrangian and supersymmetry transformations of the Euclidean Bagger-Lambert-Gustavsson theory. By demonstrating supersymmetric invariance of the Lagrangian we determine all numerical coefficients in the system. In addition, the supersymmetry algebra is shown to close on the scalar and gauge fields. We also comment on the extension to Lorentzian and other non-Euclidean $\mathcal{N}=8$ 3-algebra theories.
In this work, we employ renormalization group methods to study the general behavior of field theories possessing anisotropic scaling in the spacetime variables. The Lorentz breaking symmetry that accompanies these models are either soft, if no higher spatial derivative is present, or it may have a more complex structure if higher spatial derivatives are also included. Both situations are discussed in models with only scalar fields and also in models with fermions as a Yukawa like model.
We describe fermions in terms of a classical statistical ensemble. The states $τ$ of this ensemble are characterized by a sequence of values one or zero or a corresponding set of two-level observables. Every classical probability distribution can be associated to a quantum state for fermions. If the time evolution of the classical probabilities $p_τ$ amounts to a rotation of the wave function $q_τ(t)=\pm \sqrt{p_τ(t)}$, we infer the unitary time evolution of a quantum system of fermions according to a Schrödinger equation. We establish how such classical statistical ensembles can be mapped to …
This paper is a sequel of arXiv:0810.4350 [hep-th], and is also devoted to the local "metric-like" unconstrained Lagrangians and field equations for higher-spin fields of mixed symmetry in flat space. Here we complete the previous constrained on-shell formulation of Labastida for Fermi fields, deriving the corresponding constrained Lagrangians both via the Bianchi identities and via the requirement of self-adjointness. We also describe two types of unconstrained Lagrangian formulations: a "minimal" one, containing higher derivatives of the compensator fields, and another non-minimal one, conta…

We will use the covariant superform approach to develop a new density formula for $\mathcal{N}=2$ conformal supergravity which is based on a fermionic multiplet whose lowest component is a dimension-5/2 spinor. We will show that this density formula admits an embedding of the real scalar multiplet of [arXiv:1712.02309]. Upon using the embedding of the tensor multiplet into the real scalar multiplet, we will construct a new higher derivative action of the tensor multiplet in $\mathcal{N}=2$ conformal supergravity.
The character integral representation of one loop partition functions is useful to establish the relation between partition functions of conformal fields on Weyl equivalent spaces. The Euclidean space $S^a\times AdS_b$ can be mapped to $S^{a+b}$ provided $S^a$ and $AdS_b$ are of the same radius. As an example, to begin with, we show that the partition function in the character integral representation of conformally coupled free scalars and fermions are identical on $S^a\times AdS_b$ and $S^{a+b}$. We then demonstrate that the partition function of higher derivative conformal scalars and fermio…
We investigate the gravitational one-loop divergences of the standard model in large extra dimensions, with gravitons propagating in the (4+delta)-dimensional bulk and gauge fields as well as scalar and fermionic multiplets confined to a three-brane. To determine the divergences we establish a cut-off regularization which allows us to extract gauge-invariant counterterms. In contrast to the claim of a recent paper [arXiv:0807.0132], we show that the fermionic and scalar higher derivative counterterms do not coincide with the higher derivative terms in the Lee-Wick standard model. We argue that…
