A detailed analysis of a coronal loop oscillation event is presented, using data from the Atmospheric Imaging Assembly (AIA) onboard the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) for the first time. The loop oscillation event occurred on 2010 Oct 16, 19:05-19:35 UT, was triggered by an M2.9 GOES-class flare, located inside a highly inclined cone of a narrow-angle CME. This oscillation event had a number of unusual features: (i) Excitation of kink-mode oscillations in vertical polarization (in the loop plane); (ii) Coupled cross-sectional and density oscillations with identical periods; (iii) no detectable kink amplitude damping over the observed duration of four kink-mode periods ($P=6.3$ min); (iv) multi-loop oscillations with slightly ($\approx 10%$) different periods; and (v) a relatively cool loop temperature of $T\approx 0.5$ MK. We employ a novel method of deriving the electron density ratio external and internal to the oscillating loop from the ratio of Alfvénic speeds deduced from the flare trigger delay and the kink-mode period, i.e., $n_e/n_i=(v_A/v_{Ae})^2=0.08\pm0.01$. The coupling of the kink mode and cross-sectional oscillations can be explained as a consequence of the loop length variation in the vertical polarization mode. We determine the exact footpoint locations and loop length with stereoscopic triangulation using STEREO/EUVI-A data. We model the magnetic field in the oscillating loop using HMI/SDO magnetogram data and a potential field model and find agreement with the seismological value of the magnetic field, $B_{kink}=4.0\pm0.7$ G, within a factor of two.
Srivastava et al. (2010) have observed a highly twisted coronal loop, which was anchored in AR10960 during the period 04:43 UT-04:52 UT on 4 June 2007. The loop length and radius are approximately 80 Mm and 4 Mm, with a twist of 11.5 $π$. These observations are used as initial conditions in a three dimensional nonlinear magnetohydrodynamic simulation with parallel thermal conduction included. The initial unstable equilibrium evolves into the kink instability, from which synthetic observables are generated for various high-temperature filters of SDO/AIA. These observables include temporal and s…
We present rare observational evidence of vertical kink oscillations in a laminar and diffused large-scale plasma curtain as observed by the Atmospheric Imaging Assembly (AIA) on board the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO). The X6.9 class flare in the Active Region 11263 on 09 August 2011, induces a global large-scale disturbance that propagates in a narrow lane above the plasma curtain and creates a low density region that appears as a dimming in the observational image data. This large-scale propagating disturbance acts as a non-periodic driver that interacts asymmetrically and obliquely with…
Despite intensive studies of kink oscillations of coronal loops in the last decade, a large scale statistically significant investigation of the oscillation parameters has not been made using data from the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO). We carry out a statistical study of kink oscillations using Extreme Ultra-Violet (EUV) imaging data from a previously compiled catalogue. We analysed 58 kink oscillation events observed by the Atmospheric Imaging Assembly (AIA) onboard SDO during its first four years of operation (2010-2014). Parameters of the oscillations, including the initial apparent amp…
We report an observation of a partially erupting prominence and associated dynamical plasma processes based on observations recorded by the Atmospheric Imaging Assembly (AIA) on board the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO). The prominence first goes through a slow rise (SR) phase followed by a fast rise (FR). The slow rise phase started after a couple of small brightenings seen toward the footpoints. At the turning point from SR to FR, the prominence had already become kinked. The prominence shows strong brightening at the central kink location during the start of FR. We interpret this as intern…
We present a first systematic study on the cross-sectional temperature structure of coronal loops using the six coronal temperature filters of the Atmospheric Imaging Assembly (AIA) instrument on the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO). We analyze a sample of 100 loop snapshots measured at 10 different locations and 10 different times in active region NOAA 11089 on 2010 July 24, 21:00-22:00 UT. The cross-sectional flux profiles are measured and a cospatial background is subtracted in 6 filters in a temperature range of $T \approx 0.5-16$ MK, and 4 different parameterizations of differential emiss…
In this paper, we present multiwavelength observations of helical kink instability as a trigger of a CME which occurred in AR NOAA 11163 on 24 February 2011. The CME was associated with a M3.5 limb flare. High resolution observations from SDO/AIA suggest the development of helical kink instability in the erupting prominence, which implies a flux rope structure of the magnetic field. A brightening starts below the apex of the prominence with its slow rising motion (~100 km/s) during the activation phase. A bright structure, indicative of a helix with ~3-4 turns, was transiently formed at this p…
Decayless kink oscillations of an ensemble of loops are captured simultaneously by the High Resolution Imager (HRI) of the Extreme Ultraviolet Imager (EUI) and the Atmospheric Imaging Assembly (AIA) from 22:58 UT on 5 November to 00:27 UT on 6 November 2021. Oscillations are analysed by processing image sequences taken by the two instruments with a motion magnification technique. The analysed loops are around 51 Mm in length, and oscillate with short periods of 1-3 min (1.6 min in average) and displacement amplitudes of 27-83 km. The signals recorded by AIA are delayed by 66 s as compared to H…
The first evidence of transverse oscillations of a multistranded loop with growing amplitudes and internal coupling observed by the Atomspheric Imaging Assembly (AIA) onboard the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) is presented. The loop oscillation event occurred on 2011 March 8, triggered by a CME. The multiwavelength analysis reveals the presence of multithermal strands in the oscillating loop, whose dynamic behaviors are temperature-dependent, showing differences in their oscillation amplitudes, phases and emission evolution. The physical parameters of growing oscillations of two strands in 1…
We report a decaying kink oscillation of a flux rope during a confined eruptive flare, observed off the solar limb by SDO/AIA, that lacked a detectable white-light coronal mass ejection. The erupting flux rope underwent kinking, rotation, and apparent leg-leg interaction during the event. The oscillations were observed simultaneously in multiple AIA channels at 304, 171, and 193 Å, indicating that multithermal plasma was entrained in the rope. After reaching the overlying loops in the active region, the flux rope exhibited large-amplitude, decaying kink oscillations with an apparent initial am…
We investigate the decayless regime of coronal kink oscillations recently discovered in the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO)/AIA data. In contrast to decaying kink oscillations that are excited by impulsive dynamical processes, this type of transverse oscillations is not connected to any external impulsive impact, such as a flare or CME, and does not show any significant decay. Moreover the amplitude of these decayless oscillations is typically lower than that of decaying oscillations. The aim of this research is to estimate the prevalence of this phenomenon and its characteristic signatures. …
Previous work utilising NASA's High-resolution Coronal Imager (Hi-C 2.1) 17.2 nm observations revealed that, even at the increased spatial scales available in the data-set, there may be evidence for coronal structures that are still not fully resolved. In this follow-up study, cross-section slices of coronal strands are taken across the Hi-C 2.1 field-of-view. Following previous loop width studies, the background emission is removed to isolate the coronal strands. The resulting intensity variations are reproduced by simultaneously fitting multiple Gaussian profiles using a non-linear least-squ…
We analyze a prominence-like cool plasma structure as observed by Atmospheric Imaging Assembly (AIA) onboard the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO). We perform the Differential Emission Measure (DEM) analysis using various filters of AIA, and also deduce the temperature and density structure in and around the observed flux-tube. In addition to deducing plasma parameters, we also find an evidence of multiple harmonics of fast magnetoacoustic kink waves in the observed prominence-like magnetic structure. Making use of estimated plasma parameters and observed wave parameters, under the baseline of …
We study the detailed dynamics of a solar prominence tornado using time series of 171, 304, 193 and 211 Å spectral lines obtained by Solar Dynamics Observatory/ Atmospheric Imaging Assembly during 2012 November 7-8. The tornado first appeared at 08:00 UT, November 07, near the surface, gradually rose upwards with the mean speed of $\sim$ 1.5 km s$^{-1}$ and persisted over 30 hr. Time-distance plots show two patterns of quasi-periodic transverse displacements of the tornado axis with periods of 40 and 50 minute at different phases of the tornado evolution. The first pattern occurred during the …
We study here the phenomena of decayless kink oscillations in a system of active region (AR) coronal loops. Using high resolution observations from two different instruments, namely the Extreme Ultraviolet Imager (EUI) on board Solar Orbiter and the Atmospheric Imaging Assembly (AIA) on board the Solar Dynamics Observatory, we follow these AR loops for an hour each on three consecutive days. Our results show significantly more resolved decayless waves in the higher-resolution EUI data compared with the AIA data. Furthermore, the same system of loops exhibits many of these decayless oscillation…
We analyze and model an M1.0 flare observed by SDO/AIA and Hinode/EIS to investigate how flare loops are heated and evolve subsequently. The flare is composed of two distinctive loop systems observed in EUV images. The UV 1600 Åemission at the feet of these loops exhibits a rapid rise, followed by enhanced emission in different EUV channels observed by AIA and EIS. Such behavior is indicative of impulsive energy deposit and the subsequent response in overlying coronal loops that evolve through different temperatures. Using the method we recently developed, we infer empirical heating functions …
The excitation and damping of transversal coronal loop oscillations and quantitative relation between damping time, damping quality (damping time per period), oscillation amplitude, dissipation mechanism and the wake phenomena are investigated. The observed time series data with the \textit{Atmospheric Imaging Assembly} (AIA) telescope on NASA's \textit{Solar Dynamics Observatory} (SDO) satellite on 2015 March 2, consisting of 400 consecutive images with 12 seconds cadence in the 171 $ \rm{Å}$ pass band is analyzed for evidence of transversal oscillations along the coronal loops by Lomb-Scargl…
We firstly present the Solar Dynamics Observatory observations of four homologous flux ropes in active region (AR) 11745 on 2013 May 20-22. The four flux ropes are all above the neutral line of the AR, with endpoints anchoring at the same region, and have the generally similar morphology. For the first three flux ropes, they rose up with a velocity of less than 30 km s$^{-1}$ after their appearances, and subsequently their intensities at 131 Å decreased and the flux ropes became obscure. The fourth flux rope erupted ultimately with a speed of about 130 km s$^{-1}$ and formed a coronal mass eje…
In this work, we report our multi-wavelength observations of the transverse oscillation of a large scale coronal loop with a length of 350 Mm. The oscillation was induced by a blowout coronal jet, which was related to a circular ribbon flare (CRF) in AR 12434 on 2015 October 16. We aim to determine the physical parameters in the coronal loop, including the Alfven speed and magnetic field strength. The jet induced kink oscillation was observed in extreme-ultraviolet (EUV) wavelengths by the Atmospheric Imaging Assembly (AIA) on board the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO). Line of sight magnetogr…
Ever since their detection two decades ago, standing kink oscillations in coronal loops have been extensively studied both observationally and theoretically. Almost all driven coronal loop oscillations (e.g., by flares) are observed to damp through time often with Gaussian or exponential profiles. Intriguingly, however, it has been shown theoretically that the amplitudes of some oscillations could be modified from Gaussian or exponential profiles if cooling is present in the coronal loop systems. Indeed, in some cases the oscillation amplitude can even increase through time. In this article, w…
Coronal loops exist ubiquitously in the solar atmosphere. These loops puzzle astronomers over half a century. Solar magneto-seismology (SMS) provides a unique way to constrain the physical parameters of coronal loops. Here, we study the evolution of oscillations of a coronal loop observed by the Atmospheric Imaging Assembly (AIA). We measure geometric and physical parameters of the loop oscillations. In particular, we find that the mean period of the oscillations increased from 1048 to 1264 s during three oscillatory cycles. We employ the differential emission measure method and apply the tool…
We carry out magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulations of the quasi-static evolution and eruption of a twisted coronal flux rope under a coronal streamer built up by an imposed flux emergence at the lower boundary. The MHD model incorporates a simple empirical coronal heating, optically thin radiative cooling, and field aligned thermal conduction, and thus allows the formation of prominence condensations. We find that during the quasi-static evolution, prominence/filament condensations of an elongated, sigmoid morphology form in the dips of the significantly twisted field lines of the emerged flux…
We study a blowout jet that occurs at the west limb of the Sun on August 29$^{th}$, 2014 using high-resolution imaging/spectroscopic observations provided by SDO/AIA and IRIS. An inverse $γ$-shape flux-rope appears before the jet{--} morphological indication of the onset of kink instability. The twisted field lines of kink-unstable flux-rope reconnect at its bright knot and launch the blowout jet at $\approx$06:30:43 UT with an average speed of 234 km s$^{-1}$. Just after the launch, the northern leg of the flux rope erupts completely. The time-distance diagrams show multiple spikes or bright …
Recent observations with the Atmospheric Imaging Assembly (AIA) instrument on the SDO spacecraft have revealed the existence of decayless coronal kink oscillations. These transverse oscillations are not connected to any external phenomena like flares or coronal mass ejections, and show significantly lower amplitudes than the externally excited decaying oscillations. Numerical studies have managed to reproduce such decayless oscillations in the form of footpoint driven standing waves in coronal loops, and to treat them as a possible mechanism for wave heating of the solar corona. Our aim is to …
We use high-resolution images of the sun obtained by the SDO/AIA instrument to study the evolution of the coronal loops in a flaring solar active region. During 15 February 2011 a X-2.2 class flare occurred in NOAA 11158, a $βγδ$ sunspot complex. We identify three distinct phases of the coronal loop dynamics during this event: (i) {\it Slow rise phase}: slow rising motion of the loop-tops prior to the flare in response to slow rise of the underlying flux rope, (ii) {\it Collapse phase}: sudden contraction of the loop-tops with lower loops collapsing earlier than the higher loops, and (iii) {\i…
New and advanced space-based observing facilities continue to lower the resolution limit and detect solar coronal loops in greater detail. We continue to discover even finer sub-structures within coronal loop cross sections, in order to understand the nature of the solar corona. Here, we push this lower limit further to search for the finest coronal loop sub-structures, through taking advantage of the resolving power of the Swedish 1- m Solar Telescope (SST) / CRisp Imaging Spectro-Polarimeter (CRISP), together with co-observations from the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) / Atmospheric Image …
We present a detailed investigation of the Doppler shift oscillations in a hot loop during an M7.1 flare on 2014 October 27 observed by the Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph. The periodic oscillations are observed in the Doppler shift of Fe XXI 1354.09 A (logT~7.05), and the dominant period is about 3.1 minutes. However, such 3.1-min oscillations are not found in the line-integrated intensity of Fe XXI 1354.09 A, AIA EUV fluxes, or microwave emissions. SDO/AIA and Hinode/XRT imaging observations indicate that the Doppler shift oscillations locate at the hot loop-top region (> 11MK). Moreov…
Observations on 2011 August 9 of an X6.9-class flare in active region (AR) 11263 by the Atmospheric Imaging Assembly (AIA) on-board the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO), were followed by a rare detection of vertical kink oscillations in a large-scale coronal active region plasma curtain in EUV coronal lines. The damped oscillations with periods in the range 8.8-14.9 min were detected and analyzed recently. Our aim is to study the generation and propagation of the MHD oscillations in the plasma curtain taking into account realistic 3D magnetic and density structure of the curtain. We also aim a…

Recent numerical studies revealed that transverse motions of coronal loops can induce the Kelvin-Helmholtz Instability (KHI). This process could be important in coronal heating because it leads to dissipation of energy at small spatial-scale plasma interactions. Meanwhile, small amplitude decayless oscillations in coronal loops have been discovered recently in observations of SDO/AIA. We model such oscillations in coronal loops and study wave heating effects, considering a kink and Alfv{é}n driver separately and a mixed driver at the bottom of flux tubes. Both the transverse and Alfv{é}n oscil…
High resolution solar observations show the complex structure of the magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) wave motion. We apply the techniques of POD and DMD to identify the dominant MHD wave modes in a sunspot using the intensity time series. The POD technique was used to find modes that are spatially orthogonal, whereas the DMD technique identifies temporal orthogonality. Here we show that the combined POD and DMD approaches can successfully identify both sausage and kink modes in a sunspot umbra with an approximately circular cross-sectional shape.
We present the first unambiguous detection of quasi-periodic wave trains within the broad pulse of a global EUV wave (so-called "EIT wave") occurring on the limb. These wave trains, running ahead of the lateral CME front of 2-4 times slower, coherently travel to distances $>R_{sun}/2$ along the solar surface, with initial velocities up to 1400 km/s decelerating to ~650 km/s. The rapid expansion of the CME initiated at an elevated height of 110 Mm produces a strong downward and lateral compression, which may play an important role in driving the primary EUV wave and shaping its front forwardly …
Coronal jets are short-lived eruptive features commonly observed in polar coronal holes and are thought to play a key role in the transfer of mass and energy into the solar corona. We describe unique contemporaneous observations of a coronal blowout jet seen by the Extreme Ultraviolet Imager onboard the Solar Orbiter spacecraft (SO/EUI) and the Atmospheric Imaging Assembly onboard the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO/AIA). The coronal jet erupted from the south polar coronal hole, and was observed with high spatial and temporal resolution by both instruments. This enabled identification of the …
Recent developments in the observation and modelling of kink oscillations of coronal loops have led to heightened interest over the last few years. The modification of the Transverse Density Profile (TDP) of oscillating coronal loops by non-linear effects, in particular the Kelvin-Helmholtz Instability (KHI), is investigated. How this evolution may be detected is established, in particular, when the KHI vortices may not be observed directly. A model for the loop's TDP is used which includes a finite inhomogeneous layer and homogeneous core, with a linear transition between them. The evolution …
We introduce a new method for the investigation of low-amplitude transverse oscillations of solar plasma non-uniformities, such as coronal loops, individual strands in coronal arcades, jets, prominence fibrils, polar plumes, and other contrast features, observed with imaging instruments. The method is based on the two-dimensional dual tree complex wavelet transform (DT$\mathbb{C}$WT). It allows us to magnify transverse, in the plane-of-the-sky, quasi-periodic motions of contrast features in image sequences. The tests performed on the artificial data cubes imitating exponentially decaying, mult…
We study the formation and evolution of a failed filament eruption observed in NOAA active region 11121 near the southeast limb on November 6, 2010. We use a time series of SDO/AIA 304, 171, 131, 193, 335, 94 Å images, SDO/HMI magnetograms, plus ROSA and ISOON Hαimages, to study the erupting active region. We identify coronal loop arcades associated with a quadrupolar magnetic configuration, and show that the expansion and cancelation of the central loop arcade system over the filament is followed by the eruption of the filament. The erupting filament reveals a clear helical twist and develops…
Context. Transverse oscillations of coronal structures are currently intensively studied to explore the associated magnetohydrodynamic wave physics and perform seismology of the local medium. Aims. We make a first attempt to measure the thermodynamic evolution of a sample of coronal loops that undergo decaying kink oscillations in response to an eruption in the corresponding active region. Methods. Using data from the six coronal wavelengths of SDO/AIA, we performed a differential emission measure (DEM) analysis of 15 coronal loops before, during, and after the eruption and oscillation. Result…
We simulate transverse oscillations in radiatively cooling coronal loops and forward-model their spectroscopic and imaging signatures, paying attention to the influence of background emission. The transverse oscillations are driven at one footpoint by a periodic velocity driver. A standing kink wave is subsequently formed and the loop cross-section is deformed due to the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability, resulting in energy dissipation and heating at small scales. Besides the transverse motions, a long-period longitudinal flow is also generated due to the ponderomotive force induced slow wave. We …
Decayless kink oscillations of solar coronal loops (or decayless oscillations for short) have attracted great attention since their discovery. Coronal bright points (CBPs) are mini-active regions and consist of loops with a small size. However, decayless oscillations in CBPs have not been widely reported. In this study, we identified this kind of oscillations in some CBPs using 171 Å\, images taken by the Atmospheric Imaging Assembly (AIA) onboard the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO). After using the motion magnification algorithm to increase oscillation amplitudes, we made time-distance maps …
Slow magnetosonic waves associated with flares were observed in coronal loops by SOHO/SUMER, SDO/AIA in various EUV bandpasses, and other instruments. The excitation and damping of slow magnetosonic waves provides information on the magnetic, temperature, and density structure of the loops. Recently, it was found using 1.5D models that the thermal conduction is suppressed and compressive viscosity is enhanced in hot (T>6 MK) flaring coronal loops. We model the excitation and dissipation of slow magnetosonic waves in hot coronal loops with realistic magnetic geometry, enhanced density, and temp…
Coronal loops in active regions are often characterized by quasi-circular and helically twisted (sigmoidal) geometries, which are consistent with dipolar potential field models in the former case, and with nonlinear force-free field models with vertical currents in the latter case. Alternatively, Parker-type nanoflare models of the solar corona hypothesize that a braiding mechanism operates between unresolved loop strands, which is a more complex topological model. In this study we use the vertical-current approximation of a nonpotential magnetic field solution (that fulfills the divergence-fr…
In this paper, we report our multiwavelength observations of the vertical oscillation of a coronal cavity on 2011 March 16. The elliptical cavity with an underlying horn-like quiescent prominence was observed by the Atmospheric Imaging Assembly (AIA) on board the \textit{Solar Dynamics Observatory} (\textit{SDO}). The width and height of the cavity are 150$\arcsec$ and 240$\arcsec$, and the centroid of cavity is 128$\arcsec$ above the solar surface. At $\sim$17:50 UT, a C3.8 two-ribbon flare took place in active region 11169 close to the solar western limb. Meanwhile, a partial halo coronal ma…
We aim at investigating the morphology, kinematic and helicity evolution of a loop-like prominence during its eruption. We use multi-instrument observations from AIA/SDO, EUVI/STEREO and LASCO/SoHO. The kinematic, morphological, geometrical, and helicity evolution of a loop-like eruptive prominence are studied in the context of the magnetic flux rope model of solar prominences. The prominence eruption evolved as a height expanding twisted loop with both legs anchored in the chromosphere of a plage area. The eruption process consists of a prominence activation, acceleration, and a phase of cons…
Context. QPPs are usually detected as spatial displacements of coronal loops in imaging observations or as periodic shifts of line properties in spectroscopic observations. They are often applied for remote diagnostics of magnetic fields and plasma properties on the Sun. Aims. We combine imaging and spectroscopic measurements of available space missions, and investigate the properties of non-damping oscillations at flaring loops. Methods. We used the IRIS to measure the spectrum over a narrow slit. The double-component Gaussian fitting method was used to extract the line profile of Fe XXI 1354…
We investigate the transverse coronal-loop oscillations induced by the eruption of a prominence-carrying flux rope on 7 December 2012. The flux rope originating from NOAA Active Region (AR) 11621 was observed in EUV wavelengths by the SDO/AIA and in H$α$ line center by the ground-based telescope at the BBSO. The early evolution of the flux rope is divided into two steps: a slow rise phase at a speed of $\approx$230\,km\,s$^{-1}$ and a fast rise phase at a speed of $\approx$706\,km\,s$^{-1}$. The eruption generates a C5.8 flare and the onset of the fast rise is consistent with the HXR peak time…
Context. The dynamics of the flaring loops in active region (AR) 11429 are studied. The observed dynamics consist of several evolution stages of the flaring loop system during both the ascending and descending phases of the registered M-class flare. The dynamical properties can also be classified by different types of magnetic reconnection, related plasma ejection and aperiodic flows, quasi-periodic oscillatory motions, and rapid temperature and density changes, among others. The focus of the present paper is on a specific time interval during the ascending (pre-flare) phase. Aims. The goal is…
