Chromospheric magnetic fields are notoriously diffcult to measure. The chromospheric lines are broad, while the fields are producing a minuscule Zeeman-effect polarization. A promising diagnostic alternative is provided by the forward-scattering Hanle effect, which can be recorded in chromospheric lines such as the He i 10830 Å and the Ca i 4227 Å lines. We present a set of spectropolarimetric observations of the full Stokes vector obtained near the center of the solar disk in the Ca i 4227 Å line with the ZIMPOL polarimeter at the IRSOL observatory. We detect a number of interesting forward-scattering Hanle effect signatures, which we model successfully using polarized radiative transfer. Here we focus on the observational aspects, while a separate companion paper deals with the theoretical modeling.
The Hanle effect in strong spectral lines is the physical mechanism that should be increasingly exploited for quantitative explorations of the magnetism of the quiet solar chromospheric plasma. Here we show, by means of multilevel radiative transfer calculations and new spectropolarimetric observations, that the amplitude and shape of the scattering polarization profiles of the H-alpha line is very sensitive to the strength and structure of the chromospheric magnetic field. The interpretation of the observations in terms of one-dimensional radiative transfer modeling suggests that there is an …
This paper shows the first synthetic tomography of the quiet solar chromosphere formed by spatial maps of scattering polarization. It has been calculated for the CaII 8498, 8542 and 3934 A lines by solving the NLTE (non-local thermodynamical equilibrium) RT (radiative transfer) problem of the second kind in a 3D atmosphere model obtained from realistic MHD (magneto-hydrodynamical) simulations. Maps of circular polarization were calculated neglecting atomic polarization. Our investigation focuses on the linear polarization signals induced by kinematics, radiation field anisotropy and Hanle effe…
Scattering line polarization and the Hanle effect are among the most important mechanisms for diagnostics of the solar and stellar atmospheres. The fact that real stellar atmospheres are horizontally inhomogeneous makes the spectral synthesis and interpretation very challenging because the effect of thermodynamic fluctuations on spectral line polarization is entangled with the action of magnetic fields. This applies to the spatially resolved as well as to the averaged spectra. The necessary step towards the interpretation of such spectra is to study the line formation in sufficiently realistic…
Exposing the polarization signatures of the solar chromosphere requires studying its temporal variations, which is rarely done when modelling and interpreting scattering and Hanle signals. The present contribution sketches the scientific problem of solar polarization diagnosis from the point of view of the temporal dimension, remarking some key aspects for solving it. Our time-dependent calculations expose the need of considering dynamics explicitly when modelling and observing scattering polarization in order to achieve effective diagnosis techniques as well as a deeper knowledge of the secon…
Hanle scattering is an important diagnostic tool to study weak solar magnetic fields. Partial frequency redistribution (PRD) is necessary to interpret the linear polarization observed in strong resonance lines. Usually angle-averaged PRD functions are used to analyze linear polarization. However it is established that angle-dependent PRD functions are often necessary to interpret polarization profiles formed in the presence of weak magnetic fields. Our aim is to present an efficient decomposition technique, and the numerical method to solve the concerned angle-dependent line transfer problem. …
Is it physically feasible to perform chromospheric diagnosis using spatial maps of scattering polarization at the solar disk center? To investigate it we synthesized polarization maps (in 8542 Angstroms) resulting from MHD solar models and NLTE radiative transfer calculations that consider Hanle effect and vertical macroscopic motions. After explaining the physical con- text of forward scattering and presenting our results, we arrive at the definition of Hanle polarity inversion lines. We show how such features can give support for a clearer chromospheric diagnosis in which the magnetic and dy…
Radiative transfer investigations of the solar Mg II h and k resonance lines around 280~nm showed that, while their circular polarization (Stokes V) signals arise from the Zeeman effect, the linear polarization profiles (Stokes Q and U) are dominated by the scattering of anisotropic radiation and the Hanle and magneto-optical (MO) effects. Using the unprecedented observations of the Mg II and Mn I resonance lines obtained by the Chromospheric LAyer Spectro-Polarimeter (CLASP2), here we investigate how the linear polarization signals at different wavelengths (i.e., at the center, and at the nea…
In order to obtain empirical information on the magnetism of the solar transition region we need to measure and interpret the linear polarization produced by scattering processes in FUV and EUV spectral lines. Via the Hanle effect such linear polarization signals are sensitive to the magnetic fields expected for the quiet and active regions of the outer solar atmosphere. For example, the Ly$α$ line of H\,{\sc i} at 1216\,Å is mainly sensitive to magnetic strengths between 10 and 100 G. The interpretation of the observed spectral line polarization requires the development of suitable modeling t…
Scattering of light from an anisotropic source produces linear polarization in spectral lines and the continuum. In the outer layers of a stellar atmosphere the anisotropy of the radiation field is typically dominated by the radiation escaping away, but local horizontal fluctuations of the physical conditions may also contribute, distorting the illumination and hence, the polarization pattern. Additionally, a magnetic field may perturb and modify the line scattering polarization signals through the Hanle effect. Here, we study such symmetry-breaking effects. We develop a method to solve the tr…
The quantum theory of polarized light allows one to model scattering in the solar atmosphere for inferring its properties. This powerful approach has revealed two key long-standing problems in solar physics: the puzzling dilemmas between theory and observations in several anomalously polarized spectral lines and the need for inferring the ubiquitous weak chromospheric magnetic fields, which requires discriminating the Hanle effect in dynamic optically thick plasmas. However, the ever-present dynamics, i.e., the temporal evolution of heatings and macroscopic motions, has been widely disregarded…
Magnetic field measurements in the upper chromosphere and above, where the gas-to-magnetic pressure ratio $β$ is lower than unity, are essential for understanding the thermal structure and dynamical activity of the solar atmosphere. Recent developments in the theory and numerical modeling of polarization in spectral lines have suggested that information on the magnetic field of the chromosphere-corona transition region could be obtained by measuring the linear polarization of the solar disk radiation at the core of the hydrogen Lyman-$α$ line at 121.6~nm, which is produced by scattering proces…
We derive exact expressions for the degree of lineal polarization over a resolved or integrated stellar disc due to resonance scattering and the Hanle effect from a dipolar or quadrupolar distribution of magnetic fields. We apply the theory of scattering polarization within the formalism of the spherical tensors representation for the density matrix and radiation field. The distribution of linear polarization over the stellar disk for different configurations of the magnetic field is studied and its topology discussed. For an unresolved dipole, the resulting polarization can be expressed in te…
Diagnostic techniques for stellar magnetic fields based upon spectropolarimetry. We propose and explore a new technique based upon the linear polarization emitted in Hanle-sensitive lines in disk-integrated stars where a dipolar magnetic field breaks the rotational symmetry of the resonance scattering polarization. A star with a simple dipolar field and a 1-0 spectral line are used to compute polarization amplitudes and angles.Predicted amplitudes are low but within reach of present instruments. A new application of the Hanle effect is proposed and analyzed, a tool that allows measuring of som…
In order to understand the heating of the solar corona it is crucial to obtain empirical information on the magnetic field in its lower boundary (the transition region). To this end, we need to measure and model the linear polarization produced by scattering processes in strong UV lines, such as the hydrogen Ly$α$ line. The interpretation of the observed Stokes profiles will require taking into account that the outer solar atmosphere is highly structured and dynamic, and that the height of the transition region may well vary from one place in the atmosphere to another. Here we report on the Ly…
The Ly-alpha line of He II at 304 Å is one of the spectral lines of choice for EUV channels of narrow-band imagers on board space telescopes, which provide spectacular intensity images of the outer solar atmosphere. Since the magnetic field information is encoded in the polarization of the spectral line radiation, it is important to investigate whether the He II line radiation from the solar disk can be polarized, along with its magnetic sensitivity. Here we report some theoretical predictions concerning the linear polarization signals produced by scattering processes in this strong emission l…
One of the key research problems in stellar physics is to decipher the small-scale magnetic activity of the quiet solar atmosphere. Recent magneto-convection simulations that account for small-scale dynamo action have provided three-dimensional (3D) models of the solar photosphere characterized by a high degree of small-scale magnetic activity, similar to that found through theoretical interpretation of the scattering polarization observed in the Sr I 4607 Å line. Here we present the results of a novel investigation of the Hanle effect in this resonance line, based on 3D radiative transfer cal…
Observations of scattering polarization and the Hanle effect in various spectral lines are increasingly used to complement traditional solar magnetic field determination techniques. One of the strongest scattering polarization signals in the photosphere is measured in the Sr I line at 4607.3 Å when observed close to the solar limb. Here, we present the first observational evidence of Hanle rotation in the linearly polarized spectrum of this at several limb distances. We observed with the Zurich IMaging POLarimeter, ZIMPOL, at the IRSOL observatory, with exceptionally good seeing conditions, al…
We highlight the main results of a radiative transfer investigation on the magnetic sensitivity of the solar Mg ii k resonance line at 2795.5 angstrom, accounting for the joint action of the Hanle and Zeeman effects as well as partial frequency redistribution (PRD) phenomena. We confirm that at the line center, the linear polarization signals produced by scattering processes are measurable, and that they are sensitive, via the Hanle effect, to magnetic fields with strengths between 5 and 50 G, approximately. We also show that the Zeeman effect produces conspicuous circular polarization signals…
We highlight the main results of a three-dimensional (3D) multilevel radiative transfer investigation about the solar disk-center polarization of the Ca {\sc ii} 8542 Å line. First, we investigate the linear polarization due to the atomic level polarization produced by the absorption and scattering of anisotropic radiation in a 3D model of the solar atmosphere, taking into account the symmetry breaking effects caused by its thermal, dynamic and magnetic structure. Second, we study the contribution of the Zeeman effect to the linear and circular polarization. Finally, we show examples of the St…
In the previous two papers, namely, \citet{anuknn11} and \citet{anuetal11} we solved the polarized radiative transfer (RT) equation in multi-dimensional (multi-D) geometries, with partial frequency redistribution (PRD) as the scattering mechanism. We assumed Rayleigh scattering as the only source of linear polarization ($Q/I, U/I$) in both these papers. In this paper we extend these previous works to include the effect of weak oriented magnetic fields (Hanle effect) on line scattering. We generalize the technique of Stokes vector decomposition in terms of the irreducible spherical tensors $\ma…
The linear polarization pattern produced by scattering processes in the Ca I resonance line at 4227 angstroms is a valuable observable for probing the solar atmosphere. Via the Hanle effect, the very significant Q/I and U/I line-center signals are sensitive to the presence of magnetic fields in the lower chromosphere with strengths between 5 and 125 G, approximately. On the other hand, partial frequency redistribution (PRD) produces sizable signals in the wings of the Q/I profile, which have always been thought to be insensitive to the presence of magnetic fields. Interestingly, novel observat…
Radiative transfer (RT) studies of the linearly polarized spectrum of the Sun (the second solar spectrum) have generally focused on the line formation, with an aim to understand the vertical structure of the solar atmosphere using one-dimensional (1D) model atmospheres. Modeling spatial structuring in the observations of the linearly polarized line profiles requires the solution of multi-dimensional (multi-D) polarized RT equation and a model solar atmosphere obtained by magneto-hydrodynamical (MHD) simulations of the solar atmosphere. Our aim in this paper is to analyze the chromospheric reso…
Due to the quick evolution of the solar chromosphere, its magnetic field cannot be inferred reliably without accounting for the temporal variations of its polarized light. This has been broadly overlooked in the modelling and interpretation of the polarization due to technical problems (e.g., lack of temporal resolution or of time-dependent MHD solar models) and/or because many polarization measurements can apparently be explained without dynamics. Here, we show that the temporal evolution is critic for explaining the spectral-line scattering polarization because of its sensitivity to rapidly-…
This paper focuses on the polarized profiles of resonance scattering lines that form in magnetized disks. Optically thin lines from Keplerian planar disks are considered. Model line profiles are calculated for simple field topologies of axial fields (i.e., vertical to the disk plane) and toroidal fields (i.e., purely azimuthal). A scheme for discerning field strengths and geometries in disks is developed based on Stokes Q-U diagrams for the run of polarization across line profiles that are Doppler broadened by the disk rotation. A discussion of the Hanle effect for magnetized disks in which th…
Although the spectral lines of hydrogen contain valuable information on the physical properties of a variety of astrophysical plasmas, including the upper solar chromosphere, relatively little is known about their scattering polarization signals whose modification via the Hanle effect may be exploited for magnetic field diagnostics. Here we report on a basic theoretical investigation of the linear polarization produced by scattering processes and the Hanle effect in Ly-a, Ly-b and H-a taking into account multilevel radiative transfer effects in an isothermal stellar atmosphere model, the fine-…
Polarization that is produced by coherent scattering can be modified by magnetic fields via the Hanle effect. According to standard theory the Hanle effect should only be operating in the Doppler core of spectral lines but not in the wings. In contrast, our observations of the scattering polarization in the Ca {\sc i} 4227 Åline reveals the existence of spatial variations of the scattering polarization throughout the far line wings. This raises the question whether the observed spatial variations in wing polarization have a magnetic or non-magnetic origin. A magnetic origin may be possible if …
The bulk of the quiet solar photosphere is thought to be significantly magnetized, due to the ubiquitous presence of a tangled magnetic field at subresolution scales with an average strength <B> ~ 100 G. This conclusion was reached through detailed three-dimensional (3D) radiative transfer modeling of the Hanle effect in the Sr I 4607 line, using the microturbulent field approximation and assuming that the shape of the probability density function of the magnetic field strength is exponential. Here we relax both approximations by modeling the observed scattering polarization in terms of the Ha…

We present some theoretical predictions concerning the amplitude and magnetic sensitivity of the linear polarization signals produced by scattering processes in the hydrogen Ly-alpha line of the solar transition region. To this end, we have calculated the atomic level polarization (population imbalances and quantum coherences) induced by anisotropic radiation pumping in semi-empirical and hydrodynamical models of the solar atmosphere, taking into account radiative transfer and the Hanle effect caused by the presence of organized and random magnetic fields. The line-center amplitudes of the eme…
Recent theoretical investigations have pointed out that the cores of the Ly-alpha lines of H I and He II should show measurable scattering polarization signals when observing the solar disk, and that the magnetic sensitivity, through the Hanle effect, of such linear polarization signals is suitable for exploring the magnetism of the solar transition region. Such investigations were carried out in the limit of complete frequency redistribution (CRD) and neglecting quantum interference between the two upper J-levels of each line. Here we relax both approximations and show that the joint action o…

本研究评估了CRD极限在Sr I 4607 Å谱线散射偏振建模中的有效性,发现除弱偏振信号外CRD均适用,PRD效应仅在信号低于0.3%时显著。
Scattering polarization tends to dominate the linear polarization signals of the Ca II 8542 A line in weakly magnetized areas ($B \lesssim 100$ G), especially when the observing geometry is close to the limb. In this paper we evaluate the degree of applicability of existing non-LTE spectral line inversion codes (which assume that the spectral line polarization is due to the Zeeman effect only) at inferring the magnetic field vector and, particularly, its transverse component. To this end, we use the inversion code STiC to extract the strength and orientation of the magnetic field from syntheti…
The solar photosphere is filled by a magnetic field which is tangled on scales much smaller than the resolution capability of solar telescopes. This hidden magnetic field can be investigated via the Hanle effect. In 2007 we started a synoptic program to explore if the magnetic flux of the quiet photosphere varies with the solar cycle. For this purpose we applied a differential Hanle effect technique based on observations of scattering polarization in C$_2$ molecular lines around 514.0 nm, taken generally every month. Our results now span almost one complete solar cycle.
The weak, turbulent magnetic fields that supposedly permeate most of the solar photosphere are difficult to observe, because the Zeeman effect is virtually blind to them. The Hanle effect, acting on the scattering polarization in suitable lines, can in principle be used as a diagnostic for these fields. However, the prediction that the majority of the weak, turbulent field resides in intergranular lanes also poses significant challenges to scattering polarization observations because high spatial resolution is usually difficult to attain. We aim to measure the difference in scattering polariza…
The sizable linear polarization signals produced by the scattering of anisotropic radiation in the core of the Ca I 4227 $\mathrm{Å}$ line constitute an important observable for probing the inhomogeneous and dynamic plasma of the lower solar chromosphere. Here we show the results of a three-dimensional (3D) radiative transfer complete frequency redistribution (CRD) investigation of the line's scattering polarization in a magneto-hydrodynamical 3D model of the solar atmosphere. We take into account not only the Hanle effect produced by the model's magnetic field, but also the symmetry breaking …
A particularly interesting line for exploring the physical conditions of the quiet solar chromosphere is H$α$, but its intensity profile is magnetically insensitive and the small circular polarization signatures produced by the longitudinal Zeeman effect come mainly from the underlying photosphere. Here we show that the Hanle effect in H$α$ provides quantitative information on the magnetism of the quiet chromosphere. To this end, we calculate the response function of the emergent scattering polarization to perturbations in the magnetic field.
An expression for the partial frequency redistribution (PRD) matrix for line scattering in a two-term atom, which includes the J-state interference between its fine structure line components is derived. The influence of collisions (both elastic and inelastic) and an external magnetic field on the scattering process is taken into account. The lower term is assumed to be unpolarized and infinitely sharp. The linear Zeeman regime in which the Zeeman splitting is much smaller than the fine structure splitting is considered. The inelastic collision rates between the different levels are included in…
Probing the magnetism of the upper solar chromosphere requires measuring and modeling the scattering polarization produced by anisotropic radiation pumping in UV spectral lines. Here we apply PORTA (a novel radiative transfer code) to investigate the hydrogen Ly$α$ line in a 3D model of the solar atmosphere resulting from a state of the art MHD simulation. At full spatial resolution the linear polarization signals are very significant all over the solar disk, with a large fraction of the field of view showing line-center amplitudes well above the 1% level. Via the Hanle effect the line-center …
The solar surface magnetic field is connected with and even controls most of the solar activity phenomena. Zeeman effect diagnostics allow for measuring only a small fraction of the fractal-like structured magnetic field. The remaining hidden magnetic fields can only be accessed with the Hanle effect. Molecular lines are very convenient for applying the Hanle effect diagnostics thanks to the broad range of magnetic sensitivities in a narrow spectral region. With the UV version of the Zurich Imaging Polarimeter ZIMPOL II installed at the 45 cm telescope of the Istituto Ricerche Solari Locarno (…
Recent spectropolarimetric observations of active region filaments have revealed polarization profiles with signatures typical of the strong field Zeeman regime. The conspicuous absence in those observations of scattering polarization and Hanle effect signatures was then pointed out by some authors. This was interpreted either as a signature of mixed "turbulent" field components or as a result of optical thickness. In this article, we present a natural scenario to explain these Zeeman-only spectro-polarimetric observations of active region filaments. We propose a two-component model, one on to…
Hidden magnetic fields of the quiet Sun derived from Hanle depolarization of lines of the "second solar spectrum" at the limb from Pic du Midi observations

We present multilevel radiative transfer modeling of the scattering polarization observed in the solar O I infrared triplet around 777 nm. We demonstrate that the scattering polarization pattern observed on the solar disk forms in the chromosphere, far above the photospheric region where the bulk of the emergent intensity profiles originates. We study the sensitivity of the polarization pattern to the thermal structure of the solar atmosphere and to the presence of weak magnetic fields (0.01 - 100 G) through the Hanle effect, showing that the scattering polarization signals of the oxygen infra…
Stellar prominences detected in rapidly rotating stars serve as probes of the magnetism in the corona of cool stars. We have synthesized the temporal evolution of the Stokes profiles generated in the He I 10830 and 5876 A triplets during the rotation of a prominence around a star. The synthesis was performed with the HAZEL code using a cloud model in which the prominence is characterized by a slab located at a fixed latitude and height. It accounts for the scattering polarization and Zeeman and Hanle effects. Several cases with different prominence magnetic field strengths and orientations hav…
Theoretical investigations predicted that high spatio-temporal resolution observations in the Sr I 4607 A line must show a conspicuous scattering polarization pattern at the solar disk-center, which encodes information on the unresolved magnetism of the inter-granular photospheric plasma. Here we present a study of the impact of limited time resolution on the observability of such forward scattering (disk-center) polarization signals. Our investigation is based on three-dimensional radiative transfer calculations in a time-dependent magneto-convection model of the quiet solar photosphere, taki…
We present the Tenerife Inversion Code (TIC), which has been developed to infer the magnetic and plasma properties of the solar chromosphere and transition region via full-Stokes inversion of polarized spectral lines. The code is based on the HanleRT forward engine, which takes into account many of the physical mechanisms that are critical for a proper modeling of the Stokes profiles of spectral lines originating in the tenuous and highly dynamic plasmas of the chromosphere and transition region: quantum level population imbalance and interference (atomic polarization), frequency coherence eff…
The Zeeman effect is of limited utility for probing the magnetism of the quiet solar chromosphere. The Hanle effect in some spectral lines is sensitive to such magnetism, but the interpretation of the scattering polarization signals requires taking into account that the chromospheric plasma is highly inhomogeneous and dynamic (i.e., that the magnetic field is not the only cause of symmetry breaking). Here we investigate the reliability of a well-known formula for mapping the azimuth of chromospheric magnetic fields directly from the scattering polarization observed in the \ion{Ca}{2}~8542~Å\, …
Magnetic field topology, thermal structure and plasma motions are the three main factors affecting the polarization signals used to understand our star. In this theoretical investigation, we focus on the effect that gradients in the macroscopic vertical velocity field have on the non-magnetic scattering polarization signals, establishing the basis for general cases. We demonstrate that the solar plasma velocity gradients have a significant effect on the linear polarization produced by scattering in chromospheric spectral lines. In particular, we show the impact of velocity gradients on the ani…
The history of the IRSOL observatory is closely related to Second Solar Spectrum observations. Already in 1963 Brueckner observed scattering polarization in the CaI 4227A line. In 1996 the Hanle effect in the quiet chromosphere was measured for the first time in Locarno using the same spectral line. Since 1998 the ZIMPOL system, a polarimeter allowing unprecedented polarimetric precision, has been installed at IRSOL and been constantly upgraded to state-of-the-art technologies thanks to the close collaboration with the Institute of Astronomy in Zurich. It allows to measure the faint signatures…
Magnetic fields in turbulent, convective high-$β$ plasma naturally develop highly tangled and complex topologies---the solar photosphere being the paradigmatic example. These fields are mostly undetectable by standard diagnostic techniques with finite spatio-temporal resolution due to cancellations of Zeeman polarization signals. Observations of resonance scattering polarization have been considered to overcome these problems. But up to now, observations of scattering polarization lack the necessary combination of high sensitivity and high spatial resolution in order to directly infer the turb…
The chromosphere of the quiet Sun is an important stellar atmospheric region whose thermal and magnetic structure we need to decipher for unlocking new discoveries in solar and stellar physics. To this end, we must identify and exploit observables sensitive to weak magnetic fields (B<100 G) and to the presence of cool and hot gas in the bulk of the solar chromosphere. Here we report on an investigation of the Hanle effect in two semi-empirical models of the quiet solar atmosphere with different chromospheric thermal structures. Our study reveals that scattering polarization in the Ca II IR tri…
Context. The scattering polarization signal observed in the photospheric Sr i 4607 Å line is expected to vary at granular spatial scales. This variation can be due to changes in the magnetic field intensity and orientation (Hanle effect), but also to spatial and temporal variations in the plasma properties. Measuring the spatial variation of such polarization signal would allow us to study the properties of the magnetic fields at subgranular scales, but observations are challenging since both high spatial resolution and high spectropolarimetric sensitivity are required. Aims. We aim to provide…
Quantum interference effects together with partial frequency redistribution (PFR) in line scattering produce subtle signatures in the so called Second Solar Spectrum (the linearly polarized spectrum of the Sun). These signatures are modified in the presence of arbitrary strength magnetic fields via the Hanle, Zeeman, and Paschen-Back effects. In the present paper we solve the problem of polarized line formation in a magnetized atmosphere taking into account scattering in a two-level atom with hyperfine structure splitting together with PFR. To this end we incorporate the collisionless PFR matr…
Velocity gradients in a stellar atmospheric plasma have an impact on the anisotropy of the radiation field that illuminates each point within the medium, and this may in principle influence the scattering line polarization that results from the induced atomic level polarization. Here we analyze the emergent linear polarization profiles of the Ca II infrared triplet after solving the radiative transfer problem of scattering polarization in time-dependent hydrodynamical models of the solar chromosphere, taking into account the impact of the plasma macroscopic velocity on the atomic level polariz…
The main goal of this thesis has been to investigate the effects that the macroscopic vertical velocity fields have on the scattering polarization signals formed in the solar chromosphere. Until now, the impact of macroscopic motions had never been considered in the treatment of the polarization signals produced by scattering processes and the Hanle effect. This is especially important in the quiet solar chromosphere, given its strong dynamism and reduced magnetic field intensity. Our investigation focused in the solution of the multilevel, non-LTE radiative problem of the generation and trans…
The interpretation of the intensity and polarization of the spectral line radiation produced in the atmosphere of the Sun and of other stars requires solving a radiative transfer problem that can be very complex, especially when the main interest lies in modeling the spectral line polarization produced by scattering processes and the Hanle and Zeeman effects. One of the difficulties is that the plasma of a stellar atmosphere can be highly inhomogeneous and dynamic, which implies the need to solve the non-equilibrium problem of the generation and transfer of polarized radiation in realistic thr…
