We show that any codimension one hyperbolic attractor of a diffeomorphism of a (d+1)-dimensional closed manifold is shape equivalent to a (d+1)-dimensional torus with a finite number of points removed, or, in the non-orientable case, to a space with a 2 to 1 covering by such a torus-less-points. Furthermore, we show that each orientable attractor is homeomorphic to a tiling space associated to an aperiodic tiling of Rd, but that the converse is generally not true. This work allows the definition of a new invariant for aperiodic tilings, in many cases finer than the cohomological or K-theoretic invariants studied to date.
We show that if $Λ$ is a codimension-one hyperbolic attractor for a $C^r$ diffeomorphism $f$, where $2\leq r\leq \infty$, and $f$ is not Anosov, then there is a neighborhood $\mathcal{U}$ of $f$ in $\mathrm{Diff}^r(M)$ and an open and dense set $\mathcal{V}$ of $\mathcal{U}$ such that any $g\in\mathcal{V}$ has a trivial centralizer on the basin of attraction for $Λ$.
In hyperbolic dynamics, a well-known result is that every hyperbolic attracting set, have a finite pseudo-orbit tracing property (FPOTP). It's natural to wonder if this result is maintained in the sectional-hyperbolic dynamics; Komuro in [Lorenz attractors do not have the pseudo-orbit tracing property], provides a negative answer for this question, by proving that the geometric Lorenz Attractor doesn't have a FPOTP. In this paper, we generalized the result of Komuro, we prove that every codimension one sectional-hyperbolic attractor set with a unique singularity Lorenz-like, which is of bounda…
For geometric Lorenz attractors (including the classical Lorenz attractor) we obtain a greatly simplified proof of the central limit theorem which applies also to the more general class of codimension two singular hyperbolic attractors. We also obtain the functional central limit theorem and moment estimates, as well as iterated versions of these results. A consequence is deterministic homogenisation (convergence to a stochastic differential equation) for fast-slow dynamical systems whenever the fast dynamics is singularly hyperbolic of codimension two.
In the space of polynomial maps of $\mathbb R^2$ of degree at least two, there are codimension $3$ laminations of maps with at least $3$ period doubling Cantor attractors. The leafs of the laminations are real-analytic and they have uniform diameter. The closure of each lamination contains the codimension one tangency locus of a saddle point. Asymptotically, the leafs of each lamination align with the leafs of the eigenvalue foliation. This is an example of general coexistence theorems valid for higher dimensional real-analytic unfoldings of two dimensional homoclinic tangencies.
It is well known that topological classification of dynamical systems with hyperbolic dynamics is significantly defined by dynamics on nonwandering set. F. Przytycki generalized axiom $A$ for smooth endomorphisms that was previously introduced by S. Smale for diffeomorphisms and proved spectral decomposition theorem which claims that nonwandering set of an $A$-endomorphism is a union of a finite number basic sets. In present paper the criterion for a basic sets of an $A$-endomorphism to be an attractor is given. Moreover, dynamics on basic sets of codimension one is studied. It is shown, that …
In this paper we study the decay of correlations for Gibbs measures associated to codimension one Axiom A attractors for flows. We prove that a codimension one Axiom A attractors whose strong stable foliation is $C^{1+α}$ either have exponential decay of correlations with respect to all Gibbs measures associated to Hölder continuous potentials or their stable and unstable bundles are jointly integrable. As a consequence, there exist $C^1$-open sets of $C^3$-vector fields generating Axiom A flows having attractors so that: (i) mix exponentially with respect to equilibrium states associated with…
On a compact manifold of any dimension $d\geq 3$, we show that joint non-integrability of the stable and unstable foliation of a hyperbolic attractor with one-dimensional expanding direction, for a vector field of class $C^2$, implies exponential mixing with respect to its physical measure. Consequently, the set of Axiom A vector fields which mix exponentially with respect to the physical measure of its non-trivial attractors contains a $C^1$-open and $C^2$-dense subset of the set of all Axiom A vector fields. Moreover, for codimension one $C^2$ Anosov flows in any dimension $d\geq 3$, if the …
We consider a real analytic diffeomorphism $ψ_0$ on a n-dimensional disk D, n >= 2, exhibiting a Feigenbaum-Coullet-Tresser (F.C.T.) attractor, being far, in the standard topology of the real analytic diffeomorphism space C(D), from the standard F.C.T. map $ϕ_0$ fixed by the double renormalization. We prove that $ψ_0$ persists along a codimension-one manifold M \subset C(D), and that it is the bifurcating map along any one-parameter family in $C(D)$ transversal to M, from diffeomorphisms attracted to sinks, to those which exhibit chaos. The main tool in the proofs is a theorem of Functional An…
The integer Cech cohomology of canonical projection tilings of dimension three and codimension three is derived. These formulae are then evaluated for several icosahedral tilings known from the literature. Rather surprisingly, the cohomologies of all these tilings turn out to have torsion. This is the case even for the Danzer tiling, which is, in some sense, the simplest of all icosahedral tilings. This result is in contrast to the case of two-dimensional canonical projection tilings, where many examples without torsion are known.
We introduce and study properties of phyllotactic and rhombic tilings on the cylin- der. These are discrete sets of points that generalize cylindrical lattices. Rhombic tilings appear as periodic orbits of a discrete dynamical system S that models plant pattern formation by stacking disks of equal radius on the cylinder. This system has the advantage of allowing several disks at the same level, and thus multi-jugate config- urations. We provide partial results toward proving that the attractor for S is entirely composed of rhombic tilings and is a strongly normally attracting branched manifold…
An iterated function system $Φ$ consisting of contractive similarity mappings has a unique attractor $F \subseteq \mathbb{R}^d$ which is invariant under the action of the system, as was shown by Hutchinson [Hut]. This paper shows how the action of the function system naturally produces a tiling $\mathcal{T}$ of the convex hull of the attractor. More precisely, it tiles the complement of the attractor within its convex hull. These tiles form a collection of sets whose geometry is typically much simpler than that of $F$, yet retains key information about both $F$ and $Φ$. In particular, the tile…
We prove a result motivated by Williams's classification of expanding attractors and the Franks-Newhouse Theorem on codimension-1 Anosov diffeomorphisms: If a mixing hyperbolic attractor has 1-dimensional unstable manifolds then it is either is expanding or is homeomorphic to a compact abelian group (a toral solenoid); in the latter case the dynamics is conjugate to a group automorphism. As a corollary we obtain a classification of all 2-dimensional basic sets in 3-manifolds. Furthermore we classify all hyperbolic attractors in 3-manifolds in terms of the classically studied examples, answerin…
Aperiodic tilings are non-periodic tilings defined by local rules. They are widely used to model quasicrystals, and a central question is to understand which of the non-periodic tilings are actually aperiodic. Among tilings, those by rhombi can be easily seen as approximations of surfaces in higher dimensional spaces. In particular, those which approximate irrational planes are non-periodic. But which ones are also aperiodic? This paper introduces the notion of subperiod, which links algebraic properties of a plane with geometric properties of the tilings that approximate it. A necessary and s…
We establish an equivalence between infinitely many asymptotically stable periodic solutions and subsumed homoclinic connections for $N$-dimensional piecewise-linear continuous maps. These features arise as a codimension-three phenomenon. The periodic solutions are single-round: they each involve one excursion away from a central saddle-type periodic solution. The homoclinic connection is subsumed in the sense that one branch of the unstable manifold of the saddle solution is contained entirely within its stable manifold. The results are proved by using exact expressions for the periodic solut…
Lorenz attractors are important objects in the modern theory of chaos. The reason from one side is that they are met in various natural applications (fluid dynamics, mechanics, laser dynamics, etc.). At the same time, Lorenz attractors are robust, in the sense that they are generally not destroyed by small perturbations (autonomous, non-autonomous, stochastic). This allows us to be sure that the observed in the experiment object is exactly the chaotic attractor, rather than a long-time periodic orbit. Discrete-time analogs of the Lorenz attractor possess even more complicated structure -- they…
In this paper, we explore the three-dimensional chaotic set near a homoclinic cycle to a hyperbolic bifocus at which the vector field has negative divergence. If the invariant manifolds of the bifocus satisfy a non-degeneracy condition, a sequence of hyperbolic suspended horseshoes arises near the cycle, with one expanding and two contracting directions. We extend previous results on the field and we show that the first return map to a given cross section may be approximated by a map exhibiting heteroclinic tangencies associated to two periodic orbits. When the cycle is broken, under an additi…
We study a homoclinic flip bifurcation of case~\textbf{C}, where a homoclinic orbit to a saddle equilibrium with real eigenvalues changes from being orientable to nonorientable. This bifurcation is of codimension two, and it is the lowest codimension for a homoclinic bifurcation of a real saddle to generate chaotic behavior in the form of (suspended) Smale horseshoes and strange attractors. We present a detailed numerical case study of how global stable and unstable manifolds of the saddle equilibrium and of bifurcating periodic orbits interact close to such bifurcation. This is a step forward…
We study chaotic dynamics in a system of four differential equations describing the dynamics of five identical globally coupled phase oscillators with biharmonic coupling. We show that this system exhibits strange spiral attractors (Shilnikov attractors) with two zero (indistinguishable from zero in numerics) Lyapunov exponents in a wide region of the parameter space. We explain this phenomenon by means of bifurcation analysis of the three-dimensional Poincaré map for the system under consideration. We show that the chaotic dynamics develop here near a codimension three bifurcation, when a per…
The saddle-node bifurcation on an invariant circle (SNIC) is one of the codimension-one routes to creation or destruction of a periodic orbit in a continuous-time dynamical system. It governs the transition from resting behaviour to periodic spiking in many class I neurons, for example. Here, as a first step towards theory of networks of such units the effect of weak coupling between two systems with a SNIC is analysed. Two crucial parameters of the coupling are identified, which we call δ_1 and δ_2. Global bifurcation diagrams are obtained here for the "mutualistic" case δ_1 δ_2 > 0. Accordin…
For an elastic system that is non-conservative but autonomous, subjected for example to time-independent loading by a steadily flowing fluid (air or water), a dangerous bifurcation, such as a sub-critical bifurcation, or a cyclic fold, will trigger a dynamic jump to one or more remote stable attractors. When there is more than one candidate attractor, the one onto which the structure settles can then be indeterminate, being sensitive to infinitesimally small variations in starting conditions or parameters. In this paper we develop and study an archetypal model to explore the nonlinear dynamic …
