We present quantum (and classical) Bianchi I model, with free massless scalar field, of the Universe. Our model may be treated as the simplest prototype of the quantum BKL (Belinskii-Khalatnikov-Lifshitz) scenario. The quantization is done by making use of the nonstandard Loop Quantum Cosmology (LQC). Since the method is quite new, we present in details its motivation and the formalism. To make the nonstandard method easily understandable, we include its application to the FRW model. In the nonstandard LQC, we first solve the Hamiltonian constraint of the theory at the classical level and find elementary observables. Physical compound observables are defined in terms of elementary ones. We find that classical Big Bang singularity is replaced by quantum Big Bounce transition due to modification of classical theory by holonomy around a loop with finite size. The energy density of matter fields at the Big Bounce depends on a free parameter λ, which value is expected to be determined from future cosmological observations. The phase space is divided into two distinct regions: Kasner-like and Kasner-unlike. We use the elementary observables to quantize volume and directional volume operators in both cases. Spectra of these operators are bounded from below and discrete, and depend on λ. The discreteness may imply a foamy structure of spacetime at semiclassical level. At the quantum level an evolution of the model is generated by the so-called true Hamiltonian. This enables introducing a time parameter valued in the set of all real numbers.
Generic resolution of singularities and geodesic completeness in the loop quantization of Bianchi-II spacetimes with arbitrary minimally coupled matter is investigated. Using the effective Hamiltonian approach, we examine two available quantizations: one based on the connection operator and second by treating extrinsic curvature as connection via gauge fixing. It turns out that for the connection based quantization, either the inverse triad modifications or imposition of weak energy condition is necessary to obtain a resolution of all strong singularities and geodesic completeness. In contrast…
We study the generic resolution of strong singularities in loop quantized effective Bianchi-IX spacetime in two different quantizations - the connection operator based `A' quantization and the extrinsic curvature based `K' quantization. We show that in the effective spacetime description with arbitrary matter content, it is necessary to include inverse triad corrections to resolve all the strong singularities in the `A' quantization. Whereas in the `K' quantization these results can be obtained without including inverse triad corrections. Under these conditions, the energy density, expansion a…
We present the analyses of the asymptotic evolution of the general Bianchi IX spacetime using Hamiltonian formulation. The dynamics reveals the existence of special structures, which we call wiggles, in the physical phase space. The wiggles are different from the spikes known in the context of evolution of some spacetime models towards gravitational singularities. Our results may be used as starting point in the examination of wiggles at the quantum level.
We consider a rather simple method for the description of the Big Bang - Big Crunch cosmological singularity crossing. For the flat Friedmann universe this method gives the same results as more complicated methods, using Weyl symmetry or the transitions between the Jordan and Einstein frames. It is then easily generalized for the case of a Bianchi-I anisotropic universe. We also present early-time and late-time asymptotic solutions for a Bianchi-I universe, filled with a conformally coupled massless scalar field.
The (twice-contracted) second Bianchi identity is a differential curvature identity that holds on any smooth manifold with a metric. In the case when such a metric is Lorentzian and solves Einstein's equations with an (in this case inevitably smooth) energy-momentum-stress tensor of a "matter field" as the source of spacetime curvature, this identity implies the physical laws of energy and momentum conservation for the "matter field". The present work inquires into whether such a Bianchi identity can still hold in a weak sense for spacetimes with curvature singularities associated with timelik…
In order to investigate if the anisotropy of the spacetime may induce future singularities at a finite value of the cosmic time on the evolution of cosmological models, we study vacuum and non-vacuum Bianchi type I spacetimes exhibiting such future singularities. We show that in the case of Kasner vacuum cosmologies the spacetime may rip itself apart in a finite time, and only in the direction corresponding to the unique scale factor which diverges at this finite value of the cosmic time. The other two directional scale factors and the average scale factor do not diverge and tend to zero at th…
We present the solution space of the field equations in the Einstein-aether theory for the case of a vacuum Bianchi Type V space-time. We also find that there are portions of the initial parameters space for which no solution is admitted by the reduced equations. Whenever solutions do exist, their physical interpretation is examined through the behavior of Ricci and/or Kretsmann scalar, as well as with the identification of the effective energy momentum tensor in terms of a perfect fluid. There are cases in which no singularities appear and others where the effective fluid is isotropic.
In this paper, we study solutions to the Klein-Gordon equation on Bianchi backgrounds. In particular, we are interested in the asymptotic behaviour of solutions in the direction of silent singularities. The main conclusion is that, for a given solution $u$ to the Klein-Gordon equation, there are smooth functions $u_{i}$, $i=0,1$, on the Lie group under consideration, such that $u_σ(\cdot,σ)-u_{1}$ and $u(\cdot,σ)-u_{1}σ-u_{0}$ asymptotically converge to zero in the direction of the singularity (where $σ$ is a geometrically defined time coordinate such that the singularity corresponds to $σ\rig…
We extend recent discussions of singularity avoidance in quantum gravity from isotropic to anisotropic cosmological models. The investigation is done in the framework of quantum geometrodynamics (Wheeler-DeWitt equation). We formulate criteria of singularity avoidance for general Bianchi class A models and give explicit and detailed results for Bianchi I models with and without matter. We find that the classical singularities can generally be avoided in these models.
We show that the Nieh-Yan topological invariant breaks projective symmetry and loses its topological character in presence of non vanishing nonmetricity. The notion of the Nieh-Yan topological invariant is then extended to the generic metric-affine case, defining a generalized Nieh-Yan term, which allows to recover topologicity and projective invariance, independently. As a concrete example a class of modified theories of gravity is considered and its dynamical properties are investigated in a cosmological setting. In particular, bouncing cosmological solutions in Bianchi I models are derived.…
Re-examination of Polytropic Spheres in Palatini f(R) Gravity
We demonstrate the existence of sudden, finite-time, singularities, with constant scale factor, expansion rate and density, in expanding Bianchi type IX universes with free anisotropic pressures. A new type of non-simultaneous anisotropic sudden singularity arises because of the divergences of the pressures, which may be of barrel or pancake type. The effect of one or more directions of expansion hitting a sudden singularity is tantamount to dimensional reductions as the non-singular directions continue expanding and can see the sudden singularity in their past.
Many central problems in geometry, topology, and mathematical physics lead to questions concerning the long-time dynamics of solutions to ordinary and partial differential equations. Examples range from the Einstein field equations of general relativity to quasilinear reaction-advection-diffusion equations of parabolic type. Specific questions concern the convergence to equilibria, the existence of periodic, homoclinic, and heteroclinic solutions, and the existence and geometric structure of global attractors. On the other hand, many solutions develop singularities in finite time. The singular…
We consider the conformal Einstein equations for polytropic perfect fluid cosmologies which admit an isotropic singularity. For the polytropic index gamma strictly greater than 1 and less than or equal to 2 it is shown that the Cauchy problem for these equations is well-posed, that is to say that solutions exist, are unique and depend smoothly on the data, with data consisting of simply the 3-metric of the singularity. The analogous result for gamma=1 (dust) is obtained when Bianchi type symmetry is assumed.
We make comparison of the dynamics of the diagonal and nondiagonal Bianchi IX models in the evolution towards the cosmological singularity. Apart from the original variables, we use the Hubble normalized ones commonly applied in the examination of the dynamics of homogeneous models. Applying the dynamical systems method leads to the result that in both cases the continuous space of critical points is higher dimensional and they are of the nonhyperbolic type. This is a generic feature of the dynamics of both cases and seems to be independent on the choice of phase space variables. The topologie…
We extend the notion of the Nieh-Yan invariant to generic metric-affine geometries, where both torsion and nonmetricity are taken into account. Notably, we show that the properties of projective invariance and topologicity can be independently accommodated by a suitable choice of the parameters featuring this new Nieh-Yan term. We then consider a special class of modified theories of gravity able to promote the Immirzi parameter to a dynamical scalar field coupled to the Nieh-Yan form, and we discuss in more detail the dynamics of the effective scalar tensor theory stemming from such a revised…
We study different aspects of the Hořava-Lifshitz inspired Bianchi-II cosmology and its relations with the mixmaster universe model. First, we present exact solutions for a toy model, where only the cubic in spatial curvature terms are present in the action; then we briefly discuss some exotic singularities, which can appear in this toy model. We study also the toy model where only the quadratic in spatial curvature terms are present in the action. We establish relations between our results and those obtained by using the Hamiltonian formalism. Finally, we apply the results obtained by studyin…
We study the classical and quantum cosmology of a universe in which the matter content is a perfect fluid and the background geometry is described by a Bianchi type I metric. To write the Hamiltonian of the perfect fluid we use the Schutz representation, in terms of which, after a particular gauge fixing, we are led to an identification of a clock parameter which may play the role of time for the corresponding dynamical system. In view of the classical cosmology, it is shown that the evolution of the universe represents a late time expansion coming from a big-bang singularity. We also consider…
A brief summary of the application of coherent states in the examination of quantum dynamics of cosmological models is given. We discuss quantization maps, phase space probability distributions and semiclassical phase spaces. The implementation of coherent states based on the affine group resolves the hardest singularities, renders self-adjoint Hamiltonians without boundary conditions and provides a completely consistent semi-classical description of the involved quantum dynamics. We consider three examples: the closed Friedmann model, the anisotropic Bianchi Type I model and the deep quantum …
Resolution of singularities in the Kantowski-Sachs model due to non-perturbative quantum gravity effects is investigated. Using the effective spacetime description for the improved dynamics version of loop quantum Kantowski-Sachs spacetimes, we show that even though expansion and shear scalars are universally bounded, there can exist events where curvature invariants can diverge. However, such events can occur only for very exotic equations of state when pressure or derivatives of energy density with respect to triads become infinite at a finite energy density. In all other cases curvature inv…
In a recent article, we propose a general geometric notion of initial data on big bang singularities. This notion is of interest in its own right. However, it also serves the purpose of giving a unified perspective on many of the results in the literature. In the present article, we give a partial justification of this statement by rephrasing the results concerning Bianchi class A orthogonal stiff solutions and solutions in the $\mathbb{T}^{3}$-Gowdy symmetric vacuum setting in terms of our general geometric notion of initial data on the big bang singularity.
We consider a procedure of elimination of cosmological singularities similar to that suggested in the recent paper by Simpson and Visser for the construction of regular black holes. It is shown that by imposing a non-singular cosmological evolution with a bounce in a flat Friedmann universe filled with a minimally coupled scalar field, we obtain a transition between the standard scalar field and its phantom counterpart. In this case, the potential of the scalar field has a non-analyticity of the cusp type. This result is also readily reproduced in the case of an anisotropic Bianchi I universe.…
Simple cosmological models based upon five-dimensional Kaluza-Klein relativity are re-examined and interesting properties are indicated. These models are special cases of those obtained by Davidson et al. and Mann and Vincent, specifically, those with vanishing cosmological constant. No five-dimensional sources are present: the solutions are Ricci-flat in five dimensions. Electromagnetic degrees of freedom are assumed not to be excited, consequently the four-dimensional stress-energy tensor induced by dimensional reduction is entirely due to the scalar field, obeying the radiation equation of …
