We extend the standard model to include a weak-triplet and color-octet scalar. This `octo-triplet' field consists of three particles, two charged and one neutral, whose masses and renormalizable interactions depend only on two new parameters. The charged octo-triplet decay into a W boson and a gluon is suppressed by a loop factor and an accidental cancellation. Thus, the main decays of the charged octo-triplet may occur through higher-dimensional operators, mediated by a heavy vectorlike fermion, into quark pairs. For an octo-triplet mass below the t\bar{b} threshold, the decay into Wb\bar{b} or Wb\bar{s} through an off-shell top quark has a width comparable to that into c\bar{s} or c\bar{b}. Pair production with one octo-triplet decaying into two jets and the other decaying into a W and two soft b jets may explain the dijet-plus-W excess reported by the CDF Collaboration. Using a few kinematic distributions, we compare two mechanisms of octo-triplet pair production: through an s-channel coloron and through the coupling to gluons. The higher-dimensional operators that allow dijet decays also lead to CP violation in B_s - \bar B_s mixing.
We demonstrate the recent observation of a peak in the dijet invariant mass of the Wjj signal observed by the CDF Collaboration can be explained as the same upward fluctuation observed by CDF in single-top-quark production. In general, both t-channel and s-channel single-top-quark production produce kinematically induced peaks in the dijet spectrum. Since CDF used a Monte Carlo simulation to subtract the single-top backgrounds instead of data, a peak in the dijet spectrum is expected. The D0 Collaboration has a small upward fluctuation in their published t-channel data; and hence we predict th…
Recently, the CDF collaboration reports an anomaly in dijet mass distribution in association with a lepton and missing energy. We discuss a possibility that the origin of the lepton and missing energy comes not from a W boson but a new boson particle, which is also responsible for the dijet mass peak. We show that such a situation can be realized in the framework of the minimal supersymmetric standard model and the dijet anomaly can be explained.
We discuss the recent excess seen by the CDF Collaboration in the dijet invariant mass distribution produced in association with a $W$ boson. We analyze the possibility of such a signal within the context of a $U(1)_X$ Stueckelberg extension of the Standard Model where the new gauge boson couples only to quarks. In addition to the analysis of the $Wjj$ anomaly we also discuss the production of $Zjj$ and $γjj$ at the Tevatron. The analysis is then extended to the Large Hadron Collider with $\sqrt{s}=7 {\rm TeV}$ and predictions for the dijet signals are made.
A color-singlet neutral vector boson is considered as a possible common origin of the top forward-backward asymmetry and the CDF dijet resonance. We identify chiral and flavor structures of the couplings of this new vector boson to the standard model quarks for which one could accommodate both data. We also demonstrate that non-vanishing observables involving longitudinal top polarizations can provide useful criteria for the possible existence of parity violating new physics in the q q^bar -> t t^bar process, and discrimination between the flavor-conserving and flavor-violating cases.
Under the assumption that the dijet excess seen by the CDF Collaboration near 150 Gev in Wjj production is due to the lightest technipion of the low-scale technicolor process $ρ_T \rightarrow W π_T$, we study its observability in LHC detectors with 1-5 fb^{-1} of data. We find that cuts similar to those employed by CDF are unlikely to confirm its signal. We propose cuts tailored to the LSTC hypothesis and its backgrounds at the LHC that can reveal $π_T \rightarrow jj$. We also stress the importance at the LHC of the isospin-related channel $ρ^{\pm}_T \rightarrow Zπ^{\pm}_T \rightarrow \ell\ell…
The new physics required to explain the anomalies recently reported by the D0 and CDF collaborations, namely the top forward-backward asymmetry (FBA), the like-sign dimuon charge asymmetry in semileptonic b decay, and the CDF dijet excess, has to feature an amount of flavor symmetry in order to satisfy the severe constrains arising from flavor violation. In this paper we show that, once baryon number conservation is imposed, color & weak triplet scalars with hypercharge $Y=1/3$ can feature the required flavor structure as a consequence of standard model gauge invariance. The color & weak tripl…
Recently has been shown that the physical (mass eigenstate) color-octet technirho does not couple to two gluons. In this letter we study how this result affects the presently accepted limits for the color-octet technirho mass obtained from the study of dijets production at the Tevatron. First we show that data from Tevatron Run 1b can not exclude any mass range. Finally, we obtain limits for the Tevatron Run II.
In this paper, we study the production of spin-one color-octet resonances (colorons) at hadron colliders in a model independent way. We use dijets data measured by CDF (at \sqrt{s}=1.96 TeV and L=1.13$ 1/pb) and ATLAS (at \sqrt{s}=7$ TeV and L=315 1/nb) collaborations at the Tevatron and the LHC respetively to impose limits on the coupling of colorons to fermions. We show that CDF data still produce the more stringent limits on the coloron coupling constant.
Recently the CDF collaboration has reported the excess in the dijet invariant-mass distribution of the Wjj events, corresponding to a significance of 3.2 standard deviations. Considering the lack of similar excesses in the $γjj$ and $Z jj$ events yet, we propose a new Z' model: Z' couples only to the second generation quarks. Single production of $\zsc$ as well as associated production with $W,γ, Z$ are mainly from the sea quarks. Only $W Z'$ production has additional contribution from one valence quark and one sea quark, which is allowed by CKM mixing. We found that if the new gauge coupling …
We adopt a bottom-up approach to constructing a new physics model to explain the CDF excess seen in dijets with an associated lepton and missing transverse energy. We find that the 145 GeV broad feature seen by CDF in the dijet invariant mass distribution can be explained by a Z' boson with a mass of 145 GeV that couples only to first generation quarks. After dijet resonance constraints are considered, a sizeable region of the parameter space favored by the CDF anomaly remains viable.
Under the assumption that the dijet excess seen by the CDF Collaboration near 150 Gev in Wjj production is due to the lightest technipion of the low-scale technicolor process $ρ_T \rightarrow W π_T$, we study its observability in LHC detectors with 1--20 inverse femtobarns of data. We describe interesting new kinematic tests that can provide independent confirmation of this LSTC hypothesis. We find that cuts similar to those employed by CDF, and recently by ATLAS, cannot confirm the dijet signal. We propose cuts tailored to the LSTC hypothesis and its backgrounds at the LHC that may reveal $ρ_…
The CDF collaboration reported an excess in the production of two jets in association with a $W$. We discuss constraints on possible new particle state interpretations of this excess. The fact of no statistically significant deviation from the SM expectation for {$Z$+dijet} events in CDF data disfavors the new particle explanation. We show that the nucleon intrinsic strange quarks provide an important contribution to the $W$ boson production in association with a single top quark production. Such {$W$+t} single top quark production can contribute to the CDF {$W$+dijet} excess, thus the nucleon…
We have used 106 pb^-1 of data collected with the Collider Detector at Fermilab to search for new particles decaying to dijets. We exclude at the 95% confidence level models containing the following new particles: axigluons and flavor universal colorons with mass between 200 and 980 GeV/c, excited quarks with mass between 80 and 570 GeV/c^2 and between 580 and 760 GeV/c^2, color octet technirhos with mass between 260 and 480 GeV/c^2, W' bosons with mass between 300 and 420 GeV/c^2, and E_6 diquarks with mass between 290 and 420 GeV/c^2.
Color-singlet and color-octet vector bosons predicted in theories beyond the Standard Model have the potential to be discovered as dijet resonances at the LHC. A color-singlet resonance that has leptophobic couplings needs further investigation to be distinguished from a color-octet one. In previous work, we introduced a method for discriminating between the two kinds of resonances when their couplings are flavor-universal, using measurements of the dijet resonance mass, total decay width and production cross-section. Here, we describe two extensions of that work. First, we broaden the method …
Using the Landshoff-Nachtmann model of the pomeron, rapidity and transverse momentum distributions of gluon jets produced by double pomeron exchange in pp collisions are calculated. The comparison with the CDF Run I results on the central inclusive dijets production cross sections is performed. We find the model to give correct order of magnitude for the measured cross sections.
Under the assumption that the dijet excess seen by the CDF Collaboration near 150 Gev in Wjj production is due to the lightest technipion of the low-scale technicolor process $ρ_T \rightarrow W π_T$, we study its observability in LHC detectors for 8 TeV collisions and 20 inverse femtobarns of integrated luminosity. We describe interesting new kinematic tests that can provide independent confirmation of this LSTC hypothesis. We show that cuts similar to those employed by CDF, and recently by ATLAS, cannot confirm the dijet signal. We propose cuts tailored to the LSTC hypothesis and its backgrou…
We use as a starting point the original, central inclusive Bialas-Landshoff model for Higgs and dijet production by a double pomeron exchange in pp collisions. Next we propose the simple extension of this model to the exclusive processes. We find the extended model to be consistent with the CDF Run I, II upper limits for double diffractive exclusive dijet production. The predictions for the exclusive Higgs boson production cross sections at the Tevatron and the LHC energies are also presented.
Dijet anomaly reported by the CDF (Collider Detector at Fermilab) collaboration in 1.96 TeV p-pbar collisions is investigated within the standard model by considering effects of parton distribution functions on various processes: W+dijet, Z+dijet, WW, ZW, and top production. Since the anomalous peak exists in the dijet-mass region of 140 GeV with the p-pbar center-of-mass energy sqrt{s}=1.96 TeV, a relevant momentum fraction x of partons is roughly 0.1. In this x region, recent HERMES semi-inclusive charged-lepton scattering experiment indicated that the strange-quark distribution could be ver…
The recent data on $W+$dijet excess reported by CDF may be interpreted as the associated production of a $W$ and a new particle of mass about 150 GeV which subsequently decays into two hadron jets. We study the possibility of explaining the $W+$dijet excess by colored scalar bosons. There are several colored scalars which can have tree level renormalizable Yukawa couplings with two quarks, $({\bf 8}, {\bf 2},1/2)$, $(\bar{\bf 6}({\bf 3}), {\bf 3}({\bf 1}), -1/3)$, $(\bar {\bf 6}({\bf 3}), {\bf 1}, -4/3(2/3))$. If one of these scalars has a mass about 150 GeV, being colored it can naturally exp…
We discuss a test of the CDF dijet anomaly at the LHC. The recent observed dijet mass peak at the CDF is well fitted by a new particle with a mass of around 150 GeV, which decays into two jets. In this paper, we focus on only $Wjj$ signal to avoid model dependence, and comprehensively study the LHC discovery/exclusion reach. We found almost all the models are inconsistent with the result of the LHC, unless only valence quarks contribute the new process. We also discuss further prospects of the LHC search for this anomaly.
We study the phenomenology of color-octet scalars in the (8, 2)1/2 representation in the context of the 3.2σexcess, in the dijet invariant mass spectrum of the W+jj final state, recently observed by the CDF collaboration. We consider the region of parameter space with a sizable mass splitting between the charged and neutral color-octet scalars and consistent with electroweak precision data. We implement the principle of Minimal Flavor Violation (MFV) in order to suppress FCNC currents and reduce the number of free parameters. The excess in the W+jj channel corresponds to the charged current de…
We present a simple, perturbative, and renormalizable model with a flavor symmetry which can explain both the t-tbar forward-backward asymmetry and the bump feature present in the dijet mass distribution of the W+jj sample in the range 120-160 GeV that was recently reported by the CDF collaboration. The flavor symmetry not only ensures the flavor/CP safety of the model, but also relates the two anomalies unambiguously. It predicts a comparable forward-backward asymmetry in c-cbar. The forward-backward asymmetry in b-bar is, however, small. A bump in the dijet mass distribution in Z+jj sample i…
Diffractive events are studied by means of identification of one or more rapidity gaps and/or a leading antiproton. Measurements of soft and hard diffractive processes have been performed at the Tevatron $p\bar p$ collider and presented. We report on the diffractive structure function obtained from dijet production in the range $0<Q^2<10,000$GeV$^2$, and on the $|t|$ distribution in the region $0<|t|<1$GeV$^2$ for both soft and hard diffractive events up to $Q^2\approx 4,500$GeV$^2$. Results on single diffractive W/Z production, forward jets, and central exclusive production of both dijets and…
We report measurements of hard diffractive processes performed by the CDF collaboration in proton-antiproton collisions at the Fermilab Tevatron collider at $\sqrt{s}$=1960 GeV. The characteristics of the diffractive structure function from diffractive dijet production studies are presented. The results of exclusive dijet production in double pomeron exchange are discussed in the context of exclusive Higgs production at the LHC.
We extract constraints on the parameter space of the MW model by comparing the cross-sections for dijet, top-pair, dijet-pair, $t\bar t t \bar t$ and $b\bar b b \bar b$ productions at the LHC with the strongest available experimental limits from ATLAS or CMS at 8 or 13 TeV. Overall we find that masses below 1 TeV have not been excluded for color octet scalars as it is often claimed in the literature. The constraints that can be placed on coupling constants are typically weaker than those from existing theoretical considerations, with the exception of the parameter $η_D$.
First QCD results obtained from the CDF experiment using Run II data are reported. The Run II physics program at the Tevatron started in the spring of 2001, with protons and anti-protons colliding at an energy of sqrt(s) = 1.96 TeV. The size of the data sample already compares to that of Run I. Results presented here include the measurement of the inclusive jet cross section, a search for new particles decaying to dijets, and a study of diffractive dijet events.
Forward detectors are described together with the first physics results from Run II. Using new data and dedicated diffractive triggers, a measurement of single diffractive dijet production rate, with particular focus on the diffractive structure function of the antiproton, is discussed. Upper limits on the exclusive dijet and $χ^0_c$ production cross sections are also presented.
We explore the diffractive interaction of a proton with an anti-proton which results in centrally produced dijets. This process has been recently studied at the Tevatron. We make predictions within an Ingelman-Schlein approach and compare them to the recent data presented by the CDF collaboration. Earlier calculations resulted in theoretical cross-sections which are much larger than those observed by CDF. We find that, after consideration of hadronisation effects and the parton shower, and using parton density functions extracted from diffractive deep inelastic scattering at HERA, it is possib…
Color octet bosons are a universal prediction of models in which the 750 GeV diphoton resonance corresponds to a pion of a QCD-like composite sector. We show that the existing searches for dijet and photon plus jet resonances at the LHC constrain single productions of color octet states and can be translated into stringent limits on the 750 GeV diphoton rate. For a minimal 5 + 5bar model, the 750 GeV diphoton signal cross section at the 13 TeV LHC is constrained to be below around 5 fb. Future LHC searches for the photon plus jet resonances can establish evidence of a new color-octet state wit…
In light of the recent CDF report on the excess in the Wjj channel, we analyze (non)supersymmetric U(1)_B x U(1)_L model, interpreting the dijet peak as a leptophobic U(1)_B gauge boson. If this excess is confirmed, it has an interesting implication for the baryonic cold dark matter (CDM) in the model: there should be light CDM with a few GeV mass, and direct detection cross section at the level of a few x 10^{-2} pb.
Hypothetical color-octet particles of spin 0, pair-produced at hadron colliders through their QCD coupling, may lead to final states involving three or four b jets. We analyze kinematic distributions of the 3b final state that differentiate the scalar octets from supersymmetric Higgs bosons. Studying the scalar sector that breaks an SU(3) \times SU(3) gauge symmetry down to the QCD gauge group, we find that the scalar octet is resonantly produced in pairs via a spin-1 octet (coloron). A scalar octet of mass in the 140 - 150 GeV range can explain the nonstandard shape of the b-jet transverse en…
The latest CDF anomaly, the excess of dijet events in the invariant-mass window 120-160 GeV in associated production with a $W$ boson, can be explained by a baryonic $Z'$ model in which the $Z'$ boson has negligible couplings to leptons. Although this $Z'$ model is hardly subject to the Drell-Yan constraint from Tevatron, it is constrained by the dijet data from UA2 ($\sqrt{s} = 630$ GeV), and the precision measurements at LEP through the mixing with the SM $Z$ boson. We show that under these constraints this model can still explain the excess in the M_{jj} \sim 120 - 160 GeV window, as well a…
We study the production of a J/psi meson in association with one or two jets in gamma gamma collisions concentrating on the direct-photon contribution, which is expected to be dominant for large J/psi-meson transverse momentum and/or large dijet invariant mass. We work at leading order in the factorization formalism of nonrelativistic QCD and include all relevant colour-octet processes. We present distributions in J/psi-meson transverse momentum and rapidity appropriate for CERN LEP2, a future e^+e^- linear collider, and a possible gamma gamma collider mode of the latter. In the case of the e^…
The dijet invariant mass distributions from the hadronic decay of unpolarized top quark ($t\to b W^+$ followed by $W^+\to u \bar{d}$) are calculated, including the next-to-leading order QCD radiative corrections. We treat the top decay in the complex mass scheme due to the existence of the intermediate state W boson. Our analytical expressions are also available in different dimensional regularization schemes and $γ_5$ strategies. Finally, in order to construct the jets, we use different jet algorithms to compare their influences on our results. The obtained dijet mass distributions from the t…
Color-octet resonances arise in many well motivated theories beyond the standard model. As colored objects they are produced copiously at the LHC and can be discovered in early searches for new physics in dijet final states. Once they are discovered it will be important to measure the couplings of the new resonances to determine the underlying theoretical structure. We propose a new channel, associated production of $W,Z$ gauge bosons and color-octet resonances, to help determine the chiral structure of the couplings. We present our analysis for a range of color-octet masses (2.5 to 4.5 TeV), …
Recently CDF has reported a 4.1 sigma excess in the distribution of the dijet invariant mass between 120-160 GeV in Wjj event sample in 7.3 fb^{-1} of data, which has generated considerable interest. We offer a possible explanation of this observation in the general framework of MSSM with R-parity violation through resonance production of tau sneutrino decaying into the LSP stau_1 and W boson. We also give the predictions of this scenario for the LHC operating at 7 TeV center of mass energy.
New colour octets stand out among the new physics proposals to explain the anomalous forward-backward asymmetry measured in $t \bar t$ production by the CDF experiment at the Tevatron. We perform a fit to $t \bar t$ observables at the Tevatron and the LHC, including total cross sections, various asymmetries and the top polarisation and spin correlations, to find the most likely parameters of a light colour octet to be consistent with data. In particular, an octet coupling only to right-handed quarks gives a good fit to all measurements. The implications from the general fit are drawn in terms …
We show that the scalar sector needed for fermion mass generation when the flavor symmetry of the standard model is maximally gauged can consistently explain two anomalies reported recently by the CDF collaboration - the forward-backward asymmetry in t-tbar pair production, and the dijet invariant mass in the Wjj channel. A pair of nearly degenerate scalar doublets with masses in the range 150-200 GeV explain these anomalies, with additional scalars predicted in the mass range 100-400 GeV. Consistency of such low scale flavor physics with flavor changing processes is shown, and expectations fo…
The CDF collaboration has reported a 4.1σ excess in their lepton, missing energy, and dijets channel. This excess, which takes the form of an approximately Gaussian peak centered at a dijet invariant mass of 147 GeV, has provoked a great deal of experimental and theoretical interest. Although the DØ collaboration has reported that they do not observe a signal consistent with CDF, there is currently no widely accepted explanation for the discrepancy between these two experiments. A resolution of this issue is of great importance---not least because it may teach us lessons relevant for future se…
The recent observation by the CDF Collaboration of an excess in $W$ plus dijet events, where the dijet invariant mass shows a 3.2$σ$ peak around $144 \pm 5$ GeV, is shown to be consistent with the production of a radion $Φ$ of mass in this range, in association with a $W$ boson. It is shown that the $Φ$, which is known to be similar to the Higgs boson in many aspects, differs from it in having a much larger cross-section for $q\bar q \to WΦ$ and in decaying principally to gluons, rather than $b\bar b$ pairs. These appear to be the precise features demanded by the new particle interpretation of…
New coloured scalars in the Manohar-Wise model give sizeable contributions to the Electric Dipole Moment (EDM) of the neutron through one-loop and two-loop diagrams, computed in Reference [1]. Contributions from neutral scalars cancel out for degenerate values of the masses, whose difference is related to the oblique parameters $S$ and $T$. The Manohar-Wise model is able to explain the recent value of the $W$-boson mass published by the CDF collaboration. We show, however, that the case of total degeneracy of masses is strongly disfavoured in this model, whose parameter space is substantially …
The CDF collaboration recently presented evidence for an excess in the dijet invariant mass distribution coming from events in a W+2j exclusive sample. Here we show that this excess can be explained by the s-channel production of a weakly coupled Higgsophilic Z' near M_Z' ~ 270 GeV which decays into a W^\pm and a charged Higgs at M_{H^\pm} ~ 150 GeV. While the simplest implementations of a general leptophobic Z' model quickly run into tensions with electroweak observables, a more specific Higgsophilic model evades these constraints without resorting to any fine-tuning. We discuss the distincti…
New results from the CDF Collaboration on the invariant mass distribution of dijet events observed at the Tevatron are used to constrain the masses and couplings of new gauge bosons ($W'$ and $Z'$) as well as fundamental diquarks which can occur in some extended electroweak models. In the case of new gauge bosons, these new bounds are then compared to existing limits which arise from searches for the leptonic decay modes of these particles at the Tevatron.
CDF recently reported an anomaly in the $m_{jj}$ distribution of dijet events produced in association with a $W$ boson. If this anomaly is associated with a new flavor conserving vector resonance, $V$, one might have expected to observe effects in the analogous $m_{jj}$ distribution produced in association with a $γ$. No such excess is observed. A single $u-t-V$ flavor changing coupling, however, can contribute to the $m_{jj}$ anomaly while being consistent with other resonance searches. Furthermore, it gives a potential explanation of the observed forward-backward asymmetry in top quark produ…
Electrically-neutral massive color-singlet and color-octet vector bosons, which are often predicted in Beyond the Standard Model theories, have the potential to be discovered as dijet resonances at the LHC. Here, we describe an extensio…
In view of the recent diffractive dijet data from CDF run II, we critically re-evaluate the standard approach to the calculation of central production of dijets in quasi-elastic hadronic collisions. We find that the process is dominated by the non-perturbative region, and that even perturbative ingredients, such as the Sudakov form factor, are not under theoretical control. Comparison with data allows us to fix some of the uncertainties. Although we focus on dijets, our arguments apply to other high-mass central systems, such as the Higgs boson.
In this paper we re-examine how to utilize the previous proposed color-octet axial-vector boson $Z_{\rm C}$ to explain the $3.4σ$ anomaly of $t\bar t$ forward-backward (FB) asymmetry $A_{\rm FB}$ for $m_{t\bar t}> 450$GeV observed by CDF. Our numerical results indicate that the best-fit parameters are $g_A^q=0.07$, $g_A^Q=3$, and $M_{\rm C}=440\text{GeV}$, which are obtained by fitting the mass dependent $A_{\rm FB}$ and total cross section data provided by a recent CDF measurement. Here $g_A^q (g_A^Q)$ and $M_{\rm C}$ are the axial couplings among $Z_{\rm C}$ with the first two (the third) ge…
We study and constrain the parameter space of the vector color-octet model from observed data at Tevatron by studying top quark pair production and associated observables afbt and spin-correlation. In particular we study invariant mass and rapidity dependence of afbt at Tevatron. In addition to FC couplings we extend our study to include FV coupling involving first & third generation quarks for both these processes. In order to ensure that we remain within the constraints imposed by LHC data, we analyze the charge asymmetry, p_T spectrum & invariant mass in t\bar t production data at LHC. The …
Both CDF and D0 at Tevatron reported the measurements of forward-backward asymmetry in top pair production, which showed possible deviation from the standard model QCD prediction. In this paper, we show that a new color-octet massive vector boson with mass just above twice that of top quark can simultaneously account for the asymmetry and differential distribution $dσ/dM_{t\bar t}$ in top pair production, without conflict with other measurements for example di-jet production. The new particle can be discovered and studied at the more powerful Large Hadron Collider.
We study the polarization observables of J/psi hadroproduction at next-to-leading order within the factorization formalism of nonrelativistic quantum chromodynamics. We complete the present knowledge of the relativistic corrections by also providing the contribution due to the intermediate ^3P_J^{[8]} color-octet states at this order, which turns out to be quite significant. Exploiting the color-octet long-distance matrix elements previously extracted through a global fit to experimental data of unpolarized J/psi production, we provide theoretical predictions in the helicity and Collins-Soper …
The scalar color octet contribution to the resonance $t\bar{t}$-pair production at the LHC is calculated and analysed with account of the one loop effective two gluon vertex. It is shown that this contribution from the scalar color octet $F_2$ predicted by the minimal model with the four color quark-lepton symmetry is for $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV of about a few percents for $750 < m_{F_2} < 1800$ GeV and can exceed 10% for $400 < m_{F_2} < 750$ GeV. It is also pointed out that the search for the scalar octet $F_2$ as the resonance in the dijet mass spectra seems to be difficult because of the smallne…
Motivated by CDF recent measurements on di-jet invariant mass spectrum where di-jet is associated production with charged leptons ($e/μ$) and missing energy, we re-examine the previous proposed massive color-octet axial-vector-like boson $Z_c$. Our simulation showed that the di-jet bump around 120-160 GeV can be induced by $Z_c$ with effective coupling $g_{Z_c q \bar q} =0.2 g_s$ (q represents the quark other than top and $g_s$ is the strong coupling constant). Moreover our numerical investigation indicated that the top quark forward-backward asymmetry $A_{FB}^t$ can be reproduced without dist…
Gluon fragmentation represents the dominant source of high energy prompt quarkonia at hadron colliders. Fragmentation approximations break down, however, when a quarkonium's transverse momentum becomes comparable to its mass. In this paper, we identify a large class of color-octet diagrams that mediate quarkonia production at all energies and reduce to the dominant set of gluon fragmentation graphs in the high $p_\perp$ limit. They contribute to quarkonia differential cross sections at the same order as color-singlet diagrams and bring theoretical predictions for Upsilon and Psi production at …
We perform a phenomenological analysis of dijet production in double pomeron exchange at the Tevatron. We find that the CDF Run I results do not rule out the presence of an exclusive dijet component, as predicted by Khoze, Martin and Ryskin (KMR). With the high statistics CDF Run II data, we predict that an exclusive component at the level predicted by KMR may be visible, although the observation will depend on accurate modelling of the inclusive double pomeron exchange process. We also compare to the predictions of the DPEMC Monte Carlo, which contains a non-perturbative model for the central…
Pair-production of heavy top quarks at the Tevatron Collider is significantly enhanced by the color--octet technipion, $η_T$, occurring in multiscale models of walking technicolor. We discuss $\bar tt$ rates for $m_t = 170$ GeV and $M_{η_T} = 400-500$ GeV. Multiscale models also have color--octet technirho states in the mass range 200-600 GeV that appear as resonances in dijet production and technipion pair--production.
Using information on B-meson fragmentation functions from CERN LEP 1 and adopting the nonrelativistic QCD factorization formalism proposed by Bodwin, Braaten, and Lepage, we predict the transverse-momentum distribution of J/psi mesons originating from the inclusive decays of b hadrons produced in p p-bar collisions at the Fermilab Tevatron. We determine the relevant colour-octet charmonium matrix elements from fits to CDF data on prompt charmonium hadroproduction and to CLEO data on charmonium production from B-meson decay. Our predictions are found to agree well with recent CDF and D0 data.
In order to explain possible departures from the Standard Model predictions for $b\bar b$ and $c\bar c$ production at $Z$ peak, we propose the existence of a $Z'$ vector boson with enhanced couplings to quarks. We first show that this proposal is perfectly consistent with the full set of LEP1/SLC results. In particular, $Z-Z'$ mixing effects naturally explain the fact that $Γ_b$ and $Γ_c$ deviate from the SM in opposite directions. We then show that there is a predicted range for enhanced $Z'q\bar q$ couplings which explains, for a precise and interesting range of $Z'$ masses, the excess of di…
We present a complete evaluation for $\jpsi(\psip)$ prompt production at the Tevatron and LHC at next-to-leading order in nonrelativistic QCD, including color-singlet, color-octet, and higher charmonia feeddown contributions. The short-distance coefficients of $\pj$ at next-to-leading order are found to be larger than leading order by more than an order of magnitude but with a minus sign at high transverse momentum $p_T$. Two new linear combinations of color-octet matrix elements are obtained from the CDF data, and used to predict $\jpsi$ production at the LHC, which agrees with the CMS data. …
