We adopt a bottom-up approach to constructing a new physics model to explain the CDF excess seen in dijets with an associated lepton and missing transverse energy. We find that the 145 GeV broad feature seen by CDF in the dijet invariant mass distribution can be explained by a Z' boson with a mass of 145 GeV that couples only to first generation quarks. After dijet resonance constraints are considered, a sizeable region of the parameter space favored by the CDF anomaly remains viable.
We demonstrate the recent observation of a peak in the dijet invariant mass of the Wjj signal observed by the CDF Collaboration can be explained as the same upward fluctuation observed by CDF in single-top-quark production. In general, both t-channel and s-channel single-top-quark production produce kinematically induced peaks in the dijet spectrum. Since CDF used a Monte Carlo simulation to subtract the single-top backgrounds instead of data, a peak in the dijet spectrum is expected. The D0 Collaboration has a small upward fluctuation in their published t-channel data; and hence we predict th…
Recently, the CDF collaboration reports an anomaly in dijet mass distribution in association with a lepton and missing energy. We discuss a possibility that the origin of the lepton and missing energy comes not from a W boson but a new boson particle, which is also responsible for the dijet mass peak. We show that such a situation can be realized in the framework of the minimal supersymmetric standard model and the dijet anomaly can be explained.
The CDF collaboration reported an excess in the production of two jets in association with a $W$. We discuss constraints on possible new particle state interpretations of this excess. The fact of no statistically significant deviation from the SM expectation for {$Z$+dijet} events in CDF data disfavors the new particle explanation. We show that the nucleon intrinsic strange quarks provide an important contribution to the $W$ boson production in association with a single top quark production. Such {$W$+t} single top quark production can contribute to the CDF {$W$+dijet} excess, thus the nucleon…
We discuss the recent excess seen by the CDF Collaboration in the dijet invariant mass distribution produced in association with a $W$ boson. We analyze the possibility of such a signal within the context of a $U(1)_X$ Stueckelberg extension of the Standard Model where the new gauge boson couples only to quarks. In addition to the analysis of the $Wjj$ anomaly we also discuss the production of $Zjj$ and $γjj$ at the Tevatron. The analysis is then extended to the Large Hadron Collider with $\sqrt{s}=7 {\rm TeV}$ and predictions for the dijet signals are made.
A color-singlet neutral vector boson is considered as a possible common origin of the top forward-backward asymmetry and the CDF dijet resonance. We identify chiral and flavor structures of the couplings of this new vector boson to the standard model quarks for which one could accommodate both data. We also demonstrate that non-vanishing observables involving longitudinal top polarizations can provide useful criteria for the possible existence of parity violating new physics in the q q^bar -> t t^bar process, and discrimination between the flavor-conserving and flavor-violating cases.
Under the assumption that the dijet excess seen by the CDF Collaboration near 150 Gev in Wjj production is due to the lightest technipion of the low-scale technicolor process $ρ_T \rightarrow W π_T$, we study its observability in LHC detectors with 1-5 fb^{-1} of data. We find that cuts similar to those employed by CDF are unlikely to confirm its signal. We propose cuts tailored to the LSTC hypothesis and its backgrounds at the LHC that can reveal $π_T \rightarrow jj$. We also stress the importance at the LHC of the isospin-related channel $ρ^{\pm}_T \rightarrow Zπ^{\pm}_T \rightarrow \ell\ell…
The new physics required to explain the anomalies recently reported by the D0 and CDF collaborations, namely the top forward-backward asymmetry (FBA), the like-sign dimuon charge asymmetry in semileptonic b decay, and the CDF dijet excess, has to feature an amount of flavor symmetry in order to satisfy the severe constrains arising from flavor violation. In this paper we show that, once baryon number conservation is imposed, color & weak triplet scalars with hypercharge $Y=1/3$ can feature the required flavor structure as a consequence of standard model gauge invariance. The color & weak tripl…
Recently the CDF collaboration has reported the excess in the dijet invariant-mass distribution of the Wjj events, corresponding to a significance of 3.2 standard deviations. Considering the lack of similar excesses in the $γjj$ and $Z jj$ events yet, we propose a new Z' model: Z' couples only to the second generation quarks. Single production of $\zsc$ as well as associated production with $W,γ, Z$ are mainly from the sea quarks. Only $W Z'$ production has additional contribution from one valence quark and one sea quark, which is allowed by CKM mixing. We found that if the new gauge coupling …
We study the phenomenology of color-octet scalars in the (8, 2)1/2 representation in the context of the 3.2σexcess, in the dijet invariant mass spectrum of the W+jj final state, recently observed by the CDF collaboration. We consider the region of parameter space with a sizable mass splitting between the charged and neutral color-octet scalars and consistent with electroweak precision data. We implement the principle of Minimal Flavor Violation (MFV) in order to suppress FCNC currents and reduce the number of free parameters. The excess in the W+jj channel corresponds to the charged current de…
Under the assumption that the dijet excess seen by the CDF Collaboration near 150 Gev in Wjj production is due to the lightest technipion of the low-scale technicolor process $ρ_T \rightarrow W π_T$, we study its observability in LHC detectors with 1--20 inverse femtobarns of data. We describe interesting new kinematic tests that can provide independent confirmation of this LSTC hypothesis. We find that cuts similar to those employed by CDF, and recently by ATLAS, cannot confirm the dijet signal. We propose cuts tailored to the LSTC hypothesis and its backgrounds at the LHC that may reveal $ρ_…
Dijet anomaly reported by the CDF (Collider Detector at Fermilab) collaboration in 1.96 TeV p-pbar collisions is investigated within the standard model by considering effects of parton distribution functions on various processes: W+dijet, Z+dijet, WW, ZW, and top production. Since the anomalous peak exists in the dijet-mass region of 140 GeV with the p-pbar center-of-mass energy sqrt{s}=1.96 TeV, a relevant momentum fraction x of partons is roughly 0.1. In this x region, recent HERMES semi-inclusive charged-lepton scattering experiment indicated that the strange-quark distribution could be ver…
Under the assumption that the dijet excess seen by the CDF Collaboration near 150 Gev in Wjj production is due to the lightest technipion of the low-scale technicolor process $ρ_T \rightarrow W π_T$, we study its observability in LHC detectors for 8 TeV collisions and 20 inverse femtobarns of integrated luminosity. We describe interesting new kinematic tests that can provide independent confirmation of this LSTC hypothesis. We show that cuts similar to those employed by CDF, and recently by ATLAS, cannot confirm the dijet signal. We propose cuts tailored to the LSTC hypothesis and its backgrou…
The recent data on $W+$dijet excess reported by CDF may be interpreted as the associated production of a $W$ and a new particle of mass about 150 GeV which subsequently decays into two hadron jets. We study the possibility of explaining the $W+$dijet excess by colored scalar bosons. There are several colored scalars which can have tree level renormalizable Yukawa couplings with two quarks, $({\bf 8}, {\bf 2},1/2)$, $(\bar{\bf 6}({\bf 3}), {\bf 3}({\bf 1}), -1/3)$, $(\bar {\bf 6}({\bf 3}), {\bf 1}, -4/3(2/3))$. If one of these scalars has a mass about 150 GeV, being colored it can naturally exp…
We discuss a test of the CDF dijet anomaly at the LHC. The recent observed dijet mass peak at the CDF is well fitted by a new particle with a mass of around 150 GeV, which decays into two jets. In this paper, we focus on only $Wjj$ signal to avoid model dependence, and comprehensively study the LHC discovery/exclusion reach. We found almost all the models are inconsistent with the result of the LHC, unless only valence quarks contribute the new process. We also discuss further prospects of the LHC search for this anomaly.
We extend the standard model to include a weak-triplet and color-octet scalar. This `octo-triplet' field consists of three particles, two charged and one neutral, whose masses and renormalizable interactions depend only on two new parameters. The charged octo-triplet decay into a W boson and a gluon is suppressed by a loop factor and an accidental cancellation. Thus, the main decays of the charged octo-triplet may occur through higher-dimensional operators, mediated by a heavy vectorlike fermion, into quark pairs. For an octo-triplet mass below the t\bar{b} threshold, the decay into Wb\bar{b} …
CDF recently reported an anomaly in the $m_{jj}$ distribution of dijet events produced in association with a $W$ boson. If this anomaly is associated with a new flavor conserving vector resonance, $V$, one might have expected to observe effects in the analogous $m_{jj}$ distribution produced in association with a $γ$. No such excess is observed. A single $u-t-V$ flavor changing coupling, however, can contribute to the $m_{jj}$ anomaly while being consistent with other resonance searches. Furthermore, it gives a potential explanation of the observed forward-backward asymmetry in top quark produ…
The recently reported CDF excess at $120\,-\, 160\,GeV$ in invariant mass distribution of jet pairs accompanying $W$-boson is tentatively interpreted as a bound state of two $W$ decaying to quark-anti-quark pair. Non-perturbative effects of EW interaction obtained by application of Bogoliubov compensation approach lead to such bound state due to existence of anomalous three-boson gauge-invariant effective interaction. The application of this scheme gives satisfactory agreement with existing data without any adjusting parameter but the bound state mass $145\,GeV$.
We consider an explanation of CDF II W bosom mass anomaly by $Z-Z'$ mixing with $U(1)_R$ gauge symmetry under which right-handed fermions are charged. It is found that $U(1)_R$ is preferred to be leptophobic to accommodate the anomaly while avoiding other experimental constraints. In such a case we require extra charged leptons to cancel quantum anomalies and the SM charged leptons get masses via interactions with the extra ones. These interactions also induce muon $g-2$ and lepton flavor violations. We discuss muon $g-2$, possible flavor constraints, neutrino mass generation via inverse seesa…
A new report for the measurement of the W boson mass has been provided by the CDF II experiment. The measured value of the W boson mass is given to be $m_W^{\text{CDF II}} = 80.4335 \pm 0.0094$ GeV which shows $7σ$ deviation from the standard model prediction, while the other groups of high energy experiments, e.g., ATLAS and D0 II, show consistent results with the latter. Assuming that the measurement at CDF II is correct, we discuss the possibility to explain the anomaly in the Higgs triplet model. We find that the anomaly can be explained under the constraints from the electroweak rho param…
We present a simple, perturbative, and renormalizable model with a flavor symmetry which can explain both the t-tbar forward-backward asymmetry and the bump feature present in the dijet mass distribution of the W+jj sample in the range 120-160 GeV that was recently reported by the CDF collaboration. The flavor symmetry not only ensures the flavor/CP safety of the model, but also relates the two anomalies unambiguously. It predicts a comparable forward-backward asymmetry in c-cbar. The forward-backward asymmetry in b-bar is, however, small. A bump in the dijet mass distribution in Z+jj sample i…
Diffractive events are studied by means of identification of one or more rapidity gaps and/or a leading antiproton. Measurements of soft and hard diffractive processes have been performed at the Tevatron $p\bar p$ collider and presented. We report on the diffractive structure function obtained from dijet production in the range $0<Q^2<10,000$GeV$^2$, and on the $|t|$ distribution in the region $0<|t|<1$GeV$^2$ for both soft and hard diffractive events up to $Q^2\approx 4,500$GeV$^2$. Results on single diffractive W/Z production, forward jets, and central exclusive production of both dijets and…
We point out that right-handed neutrinos can resolve the tension between the latest CDF II measurement of the $W$-boson mass, $M_W$, and the standard model. Integrating out the new states yields a single $d=6$ operator, which induces a deviation from unitarity in the PMNS matrix. This alters the extraction of the Fermi constant from muon decay and increases the prediction for $M_W$, in line with the CDF II result. Non-unitarity of the PMNS matrix would also affect beta, meson, and tau decays. We find that the CDF II value for $M_W$ can be explained without conflicting with lepton flavour unive…
Recently, the CDF collaboration reported a new measurement of the $W$ boson mass $M_W = 80.4335 \pm 0.0094$ GeV, which shows a $\sim 7σ$ deviation from the standard model prediction $80.3545 \pm 0.0057$ GeV obtained by the electroweak (EW) global fit. This deviation can be explained by new physics generating moderate EW oblique parameters $S$, $T$, and $U$. In this work, we use the loop corrections induced by some extra EW multiplets to explain the CDF $M_W$ anomaly. The lightest neutral particle in the multiplets can also serve as a candidate of cold dark matter (DM). We consider two such mod…
We enumerate various effective couplings that contribute to the mixings between an exotic vector boson $Z^{\prime}$ and the neutral electroweak vector bosons. The miscellaneous mixing patterns can be evaluated perturbatively. The effective oblique parameters $S^{\prime}$, $T^{\prime}$, and $U^{\prime}$ are calculated to compare with the electroweak precision test results. With the contributions to the non-negligible $U^{\prime}$ parameter from the $ε_{B,W}$ parameters and the aid of some other parameters to cancel the negative $T^{\prime}$, the recent CDF $W$-mass anomaly can therefore be expl…
In light of the recent CDF report on the excess in the Wjj channel, we analyze (non)supersymmetric U(1)_B x U(1)_L model, interpreting the dijet peak as a leptophobic U(1)_B gauge boson. If this excess is confirmed, it has an interesting implication for the baryonic cold dark matter (CDM) in the model: there should be light CDM with a few GeV mass, and direct detection cross section at the level of a few x 10^{-2} pb.
The SUSY contributions $Δa_μ$ to muon $g-2$ anomaly can not even reach $3σ$ in ordinary gauge mediated SUSY breaking (GMSB) scenarios because of the strong correlations between the colored sparticle masses and the uncolored EW sparticle masses. An interesting extension to GMSB is the (Extra)Ordinary Gauge Mediation (EOGM), which can relax the correlations between squarks and sleptons with non-universal choices for $N_{eff,3}$ and $N_{eff,2}$. We find that EOGM scenarios with $N_{eff,3}\ll N_{eff,2}$ can explain the muon $g-2$ anomaly within $3σ$ range, however can not explain the new W-boson m…
The latest CDF anomaly, the excess of dijet events in the invariant-mass window 120-160 GeV in associated production with a $W$ boson, can be explained by a baryonic $Z'$ model in which the $Z'$ boson has negligible couplings to leptons. Although this $Z'$ model is hardly subject to the Drell-Yan constraint from Tevatron, it is constrained by the dijet data from UA2 ($\sqrt{s} = 630$ GeV), and the precision measurements at LEP through the mixing with the SM $Z$ boson. We show that under these constraints this model can still explain the excess in the M_{jj} \sim 120 - 160 GeV window, as well a…
We suggest an appealing strategy to probe a large class of scenarios beyond the Standard Model simultaneously explaining the recent CDF II measurement of the $W$ boson mass and predicting first-order phase transitions (FOPT) testable in future gravitational-wave (GW) experiments. Our analysis deploys measurements from the GW channels and high energy particle colliders. We discuss this methodology focusing on the specific example provided by an extension of the Standard Model of particle physics that incorporates an additional scalar $\mathrm{SU}(2)_{\rm L}$ triplet coupled to the Higgs boson. …
The dijet invariant mass distributions from the hadronic decay of unpolarized top quark ($t\to b W^+$ followed by $W^+\to u \bar{d}$) are calculated, including the next-to-leading order QCD radiative corrections. We treat the top decay in the complex mass scheme due to the existence of the intermediate state W boson. Our analytical expressions are also available in different dimensional regularization schemes and $γ_5$ strategies. Finally, in order to construct the jets, we use different jet algorithms to compare their influences on our results. The obtained dijet mass distributions from the t…
We consider the implication of the recent CDF $W$-mass anomaly in the general framework of two Higgs doublet model. We find that the large deviation of the $S$ and $T$ parameters from their SM values of zero leads to the upper limit of about $1$ TeV on the heavy charged and neutral Higgs bosons when it is combined with the theoretical constraints from the perturbative unitarity and for the Higgs potential to be bounded from below.
Original Georgi-Machacek model can preserve the custodial symmetry at tree level after the electroweak symmetry breaking. Unless additional $SU(2)_c$ custodial symmetry breaking effects are significant, the new physics contributions to $Δm_W$ are always very small. Our numerical results show that ordinary GM model can contribute to $Δm_W$ a maximal amount $0.0012$ GeV, which can not explain the new CDF-II anomaly on W boson mass. We propose firstly to introduce small misalignment among the triplet VEVs to increase $Δm_W$, which can give large new physics contributions to $Δm_W$. Such slightly …
A model describing the 4.1σ Wjj anomaly observed by the CDF experiment at the Tevatron collider is introduced. It features new scalar particles which are charged both under the SU(3)_C and the SU(2)_L gauge groups and which couple to pairs of quarks. We introduce several identical replicas of the scalar multiplets in order to leave an unbroken U(3)_Q x U(3)_U x U(3)_D flavor symmetry to satisfy the constraints coming from flavor physics. We discuss the LHC reach on the new scalar resonances both in the resonant production channel (with the Wjj final state) and in the QCD pair production channe…
We propose a particularly simple explanation of the W+dijet excess reported by the CDF collaboration. No symmetries beyond those of the standard model are necessary, and the only new particles involved are a spin-zero weak SU(2) doublet with no vacuum expectation value. Possible tests of the model and comparisons to other proposals are discussed.
Recently CDF has reported a 4.1 sigma excess in the distribution of the dijet invariant mass between 120-160 GeV in Wjj event sample in 7.3 fb^{-1} of data, which has generated considerable interest. We offer a possible explanation of this observation in the general framework of MSSM with R-parity violation through resonance production of tau sneutrino decaying into the LSP stau_1 and W boson. We also give the predictions of this scenario for the LHC operating at 7 TeV center of mass energy.
We show that the scalar sector needed for fermion mass generation when the flavor symmetry of the standard model is maximally gauged can consistently explain two anomalies reported recently by the CDF collaboration - the forward-backward asymmetry in t-tbar pair production, and the dijet invariant mass in the Wjj channel. A pair of nearly degenerate scalar doublets with masses in the range 150-200 GeV explain these anomalies, with additional scalars predicted in the mass range 100-400 GeV. Consistency of such low scale flavor physics with flavor changing processes is shown, and expectations fo…
Motivated by recent anomalous CDF data on $Wjj$ events, we study a possible explanation within the framework of the two-Higgs doublet model. We find that a charged Higgs boson of mass $\sim$ 140 GeV with appropriate couplings can account for the observed excess. In addition, we consider the flavor-changing neutral current effects induced at loop level by the charged Higgs boson on the $B$ meson system to further constrain the model. Our study shows that the like-sign charge asymmetry $A_{s\ell}^b$ can be of ${\cal O}(10^{-3})$ in this scenario.
The CDF collaboration has reported a 4.1σ excess in their lepton, missing energy, and dijets channel. This excess, which takes the form of an approximately Gaussian peak centered at a dijet invariant mass of 147 GeV, has provoked a great deal of experimental and theoretical interest. Although the DØ collaboration has reported that they do not observe a signal consistent with CDF, there is currently no widely accepted explanation for the discrepancy between these two experiments. A resolution of this issue is of great importance---not least because it may teach us lessons relevant for future se…
