We propose an approach for the ab initio calculation of materials with strong electronic correlations which is based on all local (fully irreducible) vertex corrections beyond the bare Coulomb interaction. It includes the so-called GW and dynamical mean field theory and important non-local correlations beyond, with a computational effort estimated to be still manageable.
While key effects of the many-body problem---such as Kondo and Mott physics---can be understood in terms of on-site correlations, non-local fluctuations of charge, spin, and pairing amplitudes are at the heart of the most fascinating and unresolved phenomena in condensed matter physics. Here, we review recent progress in diagrammatic extensions to dynamical mean-field theory for ab initio materials calculations. We first recapitulate the quantum field theoretical background behind the two-particle vertex. Next we discuss latest algorithmic advances in quantum Monte Carlo simulations for calcul…
Diagrammatic extensions of dynamical mean field theory (DMFT) such as the dynamical vertex approximation (D$Γ$A) allow us to include non-local correlations beyond DMFT on all length scales and proved their worth for model calculations. Here, we develop and implement an AbinitioD$Γ$A approach for electronic structure calculations of materials. Starting point is the two-particle irreducible vertex in the two particle-hole channels which is approximated by the bare non-local Coulomb interaction and all local vertex corrections. From this we calculate the full non-local vertex and the non-local se…
We characterize experimentally and theoretically the high-energy dielectric screening properties of the prototypical correlated metal SrVO$_3$. The dynamical structure factor measured by inelastic x-ray scattering spectroscopy as a function of momentum transfer is in very good agreement with first-principles calculations in the adiabatic local density approximation to time-dependent density-functional theory. Our results reveal the crucial importance of crystal local fields in the charge response function of correlated materials: They lead to depolarization effects for localised excitations an…
We develop a diagrammatic approach with local and nonlocal self-energy diagrams, constructed from the local irreducible vertex. This approach includes the local correlations of dynamical mean field theory and long-range correlations beyond. It allows for example to describe (para-)magnons and weak localization effects in strongly correlated systems. As a first application, we study the interplay between nonlocal antiferromagnetic correlations and the strong local correlations emerging in the vicinity of a Mott-Hubbard transition.
Dynamical vertex approximation is a Feynman diagrammatic extension of dynamical mean field theory, including non-local correlations on all time and length scales. Starting with the Dyson and the parquet equations, the lecture notes give an elementary introduction to the dynamical vertex approximation. As a benchmark, results for an exactly solvable benzene Hubbard ring are presented. Recent highlights, the calculation of the critical exponents of the Hubbard model in 3D and that long-range antiferromagnetic correlations in 2D actually shift the (paramagnetic) Mott transition to interaction U=0…
The role of the bridging ligand on the effective Heisenberg coupling parameters is analyzed in detail. This analysis strongly suggests that the ligand-to-metal charge transfer excitations are responsible for a large part of the final value of the magnetic coupling constant. This permits to suggest a new variant of the Difference Dedicated Configuration Interaction (DDCI) method, presently one of the most accurate and reliable for the evaluation of magnetic effective interactions. This new method treats the bridging ligand orbitals mediating the interaction at the same level than the magnetic o…
In principle, the electronic Coulomb interaction among the correlated orbitals is frequency-dependent. Though it is generally believed that the dynamically screened interaction may play a crucial role in understanding the subtle electronic structures of strongly correlated materials, hitherto we know very little about it. In the Letter, we demonstrate that within the framework of single-site dynamical mean-field theory the local two-particle Green's functions $χ$ and vertex functions $Γ$ are strongly modified by the dynamically screened interaction. Since both $χ$ and $Γ$ represent the main in…
We present an efficient ab initio dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT) implementation for quantitative simulations in solids. Our DMFT scheme employs ab initio Hamiltonians defined for impurities comprising the full unit cell or a supercell of atoms and for realistic quantum chemical basis sets. We avoid double counting errors by using Hartree-Fock as the low-level theory. Intrinsic and projected atomic orbitals (IAO+PAO) are chosen as the local embedding basis, facilitating numerical bath truncation. Using an efficient integral transformation and coupled-cluster Green's function (CCGF) impurity…
A scheme for making ab-initio calculations of the dynamic paramagnetic spin susceptibilities of solids at finite temperatures is described. It is based on Time-Dependent Density Functional Theory and employs an electronic multiple scattering formalism. Incommensurate and commensurate anti-ferromagnetic spin fluctuations in paramagnetic Cr and compositionally disordered Cr95V5 and Cr95Re5 alloys are studied together with the connection with the nesting of their Fermi surfaces. We find that the spin fluctuations can be described rather simply in terms of an overdamped oscillator model. Good agre…
Inhomogeneous dynamical mean-field theory is employed to calculate the vertex-corrected electronic charge transport for multilayered devices composed of semi-infinite metallic lead layers coupled through a strongly correlated material barrier region. The barrier region can be tuned from a metal to a Mott insulator through adjusting the interaction strength and the particle filling. We use the Falicov-Kimball model to describe the barrier region because an exact expression for the vertex corrections is known, allowing us to determine their effect on transport. The dc conductivity is calculated …
We study the dynamical density matrix renormalization group (DDMRG) and time-dependent density matrix renormalization group (td-DMRG) algorithms in the ab initio context, to compute dynamical correlation functions of correlated systems. We analyze the strengths and weaknesses of the two methods in small model problems, and propose two simple improved formulations, DDMRG$^{++}$ and td-DMRG$^{++}$, that give increased accuracy at the same bond dimension, at a nominal increase in cost. We apply DDMRG$^{++}$ to obtain the oxygen core-excitation energy in the water molecule in a quadruple-zeta qual…
We investigate the dynamical properties of ${\rm Na_2IrO_3}$. For five effective models proposed for ${\rm Na_2IrO_3}$, we numerically calculate dynamical structure factors (DSFs) with an exact diagonalization method. An effective model obtained from $ab$ $initio$ calculations explains inelastic neutron scattering experiments adequately. We further calculate excitation modes based on linearized spin-wave theory. The spin-wave excitation of the effective models obtained by $ab$ $initio$ calculations disagrees with the low-lying excitation of DSFs. We attribute this discrepancy to the location o…
Single-band Hubbard model at criticality of the metal-insulator transition is studied using approximations derived from parquet theory. It is argued that only the electron-hole and interaction two-particle channels in the parquet algebra are relevant. A scheme is proposed how to reduce the parquet equations to a manageable form the complexity of which is comparable with single-channel approximations such as the renormalized RPA. The newly derived approximation, however, contains dynamical vertex corrections, remains self-consistent at the two-particle level and allows only for integrable singu…
We compute the frequency dependent conductivity of the two dimensional square lattice Hubbard model at zero temperature as a function of density to second order in the interaction strength, and compare the results to the predictions of single-site dynamical mean field theory computed at the same order. We find that despite the neglect of vertex corrections, the single site dynamical mean field approximation produces semiquantitatively accurate results for most carrier concentrations, but fails qualitatively for the nearly empty or nearly filled band cases where the theory exhibits an emergent …
We describe our theoretical formalism and computational scheme for making ab-initio calculations of the dynamic paramagnetic spin susceptibilities of metals and alloys at finite temperatures. Its basis is Time-Dependent Density Functional Theory within an electronic multiple scattering, imaginary time Green function formalism. Results receive a natural interpretation in terms of overdamped oscillator systems making them suitable for incorporation into spin fluctuation theories. For illustration we apply our method to the nearly ferromagnetic metal Pd and the nearly antiferromagnetic chromium a…
We present results of ab initio theoretical investigations of the excitation spectra of correlated electrons in metals (Al, K, and Li) and their interplay with inelastic scattering experiments. We resolve various anomalies contained in the data, which were originally viewed as signatures of strong dynamical electronic correlations; we show that, instead, the anomalies are due to band-structure effects. The underlying theoretical framework in our density-response calculations is time-dependent density-functional theory; with this scheme we discuss the lifetime of the K plasmon, and the dynamica…
Recently, diagrammatic extensions of dynamical mean field theory (DMFT) have been proposed for including short- and long-range correlations beyond DMFT on an equal footing. We employ one of these, the dynamical vertex approximation (D$Γ$A), and study the two-dimensional Hubbard model on a square lattice. We define two transition lines in the phase diagram which correspond, respectively, to the opening of the gap in the nodal direction and throughout the Fermi surface. Our self-energy data show that the evolution between the two regimes occurs in a gradual way (crossover) and also that at low e…
The influence of dynamical correlation effects on the magneto-optical properties of ferromagnetic Fe and Ni has been investigated. In addition the temperature dependence of the self-energy and its influence on the DOS and optical conductivity is considered. Magneto-optical properties were calculated on the basis of the one-particle Green's function, which was obtained from the DMFT-SPTF procedure. It is shown that dynamical correlations play a rather important role in weakly correlated Fe and substantially change the spectra for moderately correlated Ni. Magneto-optical properties obtained for…
We have implemented the dynamical vertex approximation (D$Γ$A) in its full parquet-based version to include spatial correlations on all length scales and in {\sl all} scattering channels. The algorithm is applied to study the electronic self-energies and the spectral properties of finite-size one-dimensional Hubbard models with periodic boundary conditions (nanoscopic Hubbard rings). From a methodological point of view, our calculations and their comparison to the results obtained within dynamical mean-field theory, plain parquet approximation, and the exact numerical solution, allow us to eva…
We present a fully self-consistent combined GW and dynamical mean field (GW+DMFT) study of the spectral properties of the extended two-dimensional Hubbard model. The inclusion of the local dynamical vertex stemming from the DMFT self-energy and polarization is shown to cure the problems of self-consistent GW in the description of spectral properties. We calculate the momentum-resolved spectral functions, the two-particle polarization and electron loss spectra, and show that the inclusion of GW in extended DMFT leads to a narrowing of the quasi-particle width and more pronounced Hubbard bands i…
Engineering effective electronic parameters is a major focus in condensed matter physics. Their dynamical modulation opens the possibility of creating and controlling physical properties in systems driven out of equilibrium. In this work, we demonstrate that the Hubbard $U$, the on-site Coulomb repulsion in strongly correlated materials, can be modified on femtosecond time scales by a strong nonresonant laser excitation in the prototypical charge transfer insulator NiO. Using our recently developed time-dependent density functional theory plus self-consistent $U$ (TDDFT+U) method, we demonstra…
We present an ab initio GW calculation to study dynamical effects on an organic compound (TMTSF)2PF6. Calculated polarized reflectivities reproduce experimental plasma edges at around 0.2 eV for E||b' and 1.0 eV for E||a. The low-energy plasmons come out from the low-energy narrow bands energetically isolated from other higher-energy bands, and affect the low-energy electronic structure via the GW-type self-energy. Because of the quasi-one-dimensional band structure, a large plasmon-induced electron scattering is found in the low-energy occupied states along the X-M line.

Experiments with ultracold atoms provide a highly controllable laboratory setting with many unique opportunities for precision exploration of quantum many-body phenomena. The nature of such systems, with strong interaction and quantum entanglement, makes reliable theoretical calculations challenging. Especially difficult are excitation and dynamical properties, which are often the most directly relevant to experiment. We carry out exact numerical calculations, by Monte Carlo sampling of imaginary-time propagation of Slater determinants, to compute the pairing gap in the two-dimensional Fermi g…
In this work, we adapt the formalism of the dynamical vertex approximation (D$Γ$A), a diagrammatic approach including many-body correlations beyond the dynamical mean-field theory, to the case of attractive onsite interactions. We start by exploiting the ladder approximation of the D$Γ$A scheme, in order to derive the corresponding equations for the non-local self-energy and vertex functions of the attractive Hubbard model. Second, we prove the validity of our derivation by showing that the results obtained in the particle-hole symmetric case fully preserve the exact mapping between the attrac…
We present an efficient and numerically stable algorithm for calculation of two-particle response functions within the dynamical mean-field theory. The technique is based on inferring the high frequency asymptotic behavior of the irreducible vertex function from the local dynamical susceptibility. The algorithm is tested on several examples. In all cases rapid convergence of the vertex function towards its asymptotic form is observed.
{\it Ab initio} analyses of A$_2$IrO$_4$ (A=Sr, Ba) are presented. Effective Hubbard-type models for Ir 5$d$ $t_{2g}$ manifolds downfolded from the global band structure are solved based on the dynamical mean-field theory. The results for A=Sr and Ba correctly reproduce paramagnetic metals undergoing continuous transitions to insulators below the Néel temperature $T_N$. These compounds are classified not into Mott insulators but into Slater insulators. However, the insulating gap opens by a synergy of the Neel order and significant band renormalization, which is also manifested by a 2D bad met…
In this paper, we investigate how nonlocal correlations affect, selectively, the physics of correlated electrons over different energy scales, from the Fermi level to the band-edges. This goal is achieved by applying a diagrammatic extension of dynamical mean field theory (DMFT), the dynamical vertex approximation (D$Γ$A), to study several spectral and thermodynamic properties of the unfrustrated Hubbard model in two and three dimensions. Specifically, we focus first on the low-energy regime by computing the electronic scattering rate and the quasiparticle mass renormalization for decreasing t…
We investigate the charge- and spin dynamical structure factors for the 2D one-band Hubbard model in the strong coupling regime within an extension of the Dynamical Cluster Approximation (DCA) to two-particle response functions. The full irreducible two-particle vertex with three momenta and frequencies is approximated by an effective vertex dependent on the momentum and frequency of the spin/charge excitation. In the spirit of the DCA, the effective vertex is calculated with quantum Monte Carlo methods on a finite cluster. On the basis of a comparison with high temperature auxiliary field qua…
The first part of this article centers on the fact that key features of the dynamical response of weakly-correlated materials (the alkalis, Al), have been found experimentally to differ qualitatively from simple-model behavior. In the absence of ab initio theory, the surprises embodied in the experimental data were imputed to effects of dynamical correlations. We summarize results of ab initio investigations of linear response, performed within time-dependent density-functional theory (TDDFT), in which the unexpected features of the observed spectra are shown to be due to band-structure effect…
The ab initio extension of the dynamical vertex approximation (D$Γ$A) method allows for realistic materials calculations that include non-local correlations beyond $GW$ and dynamical mean-field theory. Here, we discuss the AbinitioD$Γ$A algorithm, its implementation and usage in detail, and make the program package available to the scientific community.
We consider the interaction-driven Mott transition at zero temperature from the viewpoint of microscopic Fermi liquid theory. To this end, we derive an exact expression for the Landau parameters within the dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT) approximation to the single-band Hubbard model. At the Mott transition the symmetric and the anti-symmetric Landau parameter diverge. The vanishing compressibility at the Mott transition directly implies the divergence of the forward scattering amplitude in the charge sector, which connects the proximity of the Mott phase to a tendency towards phase separat…
We propose a self-consistent method for electronic structure calculations of correlated systems, which combines the local spin-density approximation (LSDA) and the dynamical mean field theory (DMFT). The LSDA part is based on the exact muffin-tin orbital approach, meanwhile the DMFT uses a perturbation scheme that includes the T matrix with fluctuation exchange approximation. The current LSDA+DMFT implementation fulfills both self-energy and charge self-consistency requirements. We present results on the electronic structure calculations for bulk 3d transition metals (Cr, Fe, and Ni) and for F…
We compute the spin susceptibility of the two-dimensional Hubbard model away from half-filling, and analyze the impact of frequency dependent vertex corrections as obtained from the dynamical mean field theory (DMFT). We find that the local dynamics captured by the DMFT vertex strongly affects non-local spin correlations, and thus the momentum dependence of the spin susceptibility. While the widely used random phase approximation yields commensurate Néel-type antiferromagnetism as the dominant instability over a wide doping range, the vertex corrections favor incommensurate ordering wave vecto…
With an increasing complexity of nanoscopic systems and the modeling thereof, new theoretical tools are needed for a reliable calculation of complex systems with strong electronic correlations. To this end, we propose a new approach based on the recently introduced dynamical vertex approximation. We demonstrate its reliability already on the one-particle vertex (i.e., dynamical mean field theory) level by comparison with the exact solution. Modeling a quantum point contact with 110 atoms, we show that the contact becomes insulating already before entering the tunneling regime due to a local Mo…
In the last decades, dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT) and its diagrammatic extensions have been successfully applied to describe local and nonlocal correlation effects in correlated electron systems. Unfortunately, except for the exact solution, it is impossible to fulfill both the Pauli principle and conservation laws at the same time. Consequently, fundamental observables such as the kinetic and potential energies are ambiguously defined. In this work, we propose an approach to overcome the ambiguity in the calculation of the potential energy within the ladder dynamical vertex approximatio…

We demonstrate how ab initio cluster calculations including the full Coulomb vertex can be done in the basis of the localized, generalized Wannier orbitals which describe the low-energy density functional (LDA) band structure of the infinite crystal, e.g. the transition metal 3d and oxygen 2p orbitals. The spatial extend of our 3d Wannier orbitals (orthonormalized Nth order muffin-tin orbitals) is close to that found for atomic Hartree-Fock orbitals. We define Ligand orbitals as those linear combinations of the O 2p Wannier orbitals which couple to the 3d orbitals for the chosen cluster. The u…
We present an efficient implementation of the parquet formalism which respects the asymptotic structure of the vertex functions at both single- and two-particle levels in momentum- and frequency-space. We identify the two-particle reducible vertex as the core function which is essential for the construction of the other vertex functions. This observation stimulates us to consider a two-level parameter-reduction for this function to simplify the solution of the parquet equations. The resulting functions, which depend on fewer arguments, are coined "kernel functions". With the use of the "kernel…
In the study of strongly interacting systems, correlations on the two-particle level are receiving more and more attention. In this work, we study a particular two-particle correlation function: the fermion-boson vertex. It describes the response of the Green's function when an external field is applied and is an important ingredient of diagrammatic extensions of Dynamical Mean-Field Theory. We provide several perspectives on this object, using Ward identities, sum rules, perturbative analysis and asymptotic relations. We then use these tools to study the vertex across the doping-driven metal-…
To fathom the mechanism of high-temperature ($T_{\rm c}$) superconductivity, the dynamical vertex approximation (D$Γ$A) is evoked for the two-dimensional repulsive Hubbard model. After showing that our results well reproduce the cuprate phase diagram with a reasonable $T_{\rm c}$ and dome structure, we keep track of the scattering processes that primarily affect $T_{\rm c}$. We find that local particle-particle diagrams significantly screen the bare interaction at low frequencies, which in turn suppresses antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations and hence the pairing interaction. Thus we identify d…
The dynamical susceptibility of strongly correlated electronic systems can be calculated within the framework of the dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT). The required measurement of the four-point vertex of the auxiliary impurity model is however costly and restricted to a finite grid of Matsubara frequencies, leading to a cutoff error. It is shown that the propagation of this error to the lattice response function can be minimized by virtue of an exact decomposition of the DMFT polarization function into local and nonlocal parts. The former is measured directly by the impurity solver, while th…
We apply a recently introduced hybridization-flow functional renormalization group scheme for Anderson-like impurity models as an impurity solver in a dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT) approach to lattice Hubbard models. We present how this scheme is capable of reproducing metallic and insulating solutions of the lattice model. Our setup also offers a numerically rather inexpensive method to calculate two-particle correlation functions. For the paramagnetic Hubbard-model on the Bethe lattice in infinite dimensions we calculate the local two-particle-vertex for the metallic and the insulating …
We study the effect of a refined electron-photon vertex on the dynamical breaking of chiral symmetry in reduced quantum electrodynamics. We construct an educated {\em ansatz} for this vertex which satisfies the required discrete symmetries under parity, time reversal and charge conjugation operations. Furthermore, it reproduces its asymptotic perturbative limit in the weak coupling regime and ensures the massless electron propagator is multiplicatively renormalizable in its leading logarithmic expansion. Employing this vertex {\em ansatz}, we solve the gap equation to compute dynamically gener…
We give an elementary introduction to a recent diagrammatic extension of dynamical mean field theory (DMFT) coined dynamical vertex approximation (D$Γ$A). This approach contains the important local correlations of DMFT, giving, among others, rise to quasiparticle renormalizations, Mott-Hubbard transitions and magnetism, but also non-local correlations beyond. The latter are at the very essence of many physical phenomena in strongly correlated elecectron systems. As correlations are treated equally on all length scales, D$Γ$A allows us to describe physical phenomena such as magnons, quantum cri…
The experimental valence band photoemission spectrum of semiconductors exhibits multiple satellites that cannot be described by the GW approximation for the self-energy in the framework of many-body perturbation theory. Taking silicon as a prototypical example, we compare experimental high energy photoemission spectra with GW calculations and analyze the origin of the GW failure. We then propose an approximation to the functional differential equation that determines the exact one-body Green's function, whose solution has an exponential form. This yields a calculated spectrum, including cross …
We generalize the formalism of the dynamical vertex approximation (D$Γ$A) -- a diagrammatic extension of the dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT)-- to treat magnetically ordered phases. To this aim, we start by concisely illustrating the many-electron formalism for performing ladder resummations of Feynman diagrams in systems with broken SU(2)-symmetry, associated to ferromagnetic (FM) or antiferromagnetic (AF) order. We then analyze the algorithmic simplifications introduced by taking the local approximation of the two-particle irreducible vertex functions in the Bethe-Salpeter equations, which…
While the traditional local-density approximation (LDA) cannot describe Mott insulators, {\it ab-initio} determination of the Hubbard $U$, for example, limits LDA-plus dynamical mean field theory (DMFT) approaches. Here, we attempt to overcome these bottlenecks by achieving fusion of the quantum chemistry (QC) approach with DMFT. QC+DMFT supplants the LDA bandstructure by its QC counterpart as an input to DMFT. Using QC+DMFT, we show that undoped $La_{2}CuO_{4}$ is a $d$-Mott insulator, and qualitatively discuss the circulating current- and incoherent metal phase, at small but finite hole dopi…
There are two competing views of itinerant ferromagnetism, the first viewing ferromagnetism as resulting from the indirect coupling between local moments via the itinerant carrier dynamics, the so-called RKKY mechanism, while in the alternative picture, ferromagnetism results from the spin polarization of itinerant carriers by the strong atomic Hund interaction - the so-called double exchange (DE) scenario. Which view describes the ferromagnetism in diluted magnetic semiconductors, materials with promise for spintronic applications, is still unclear. Here, we describe the detailed physical res…
We review recent developments in electronic structure calculations that go beyond state-of-the-art methods such as density functional theory (DFT) and dynamical mean field theory (DMFT). Specifically, we discuss the following methods: GW as implemented in the Vienna {\it ab initio} simulation package (VASP) with the self energy on the imaginary frequency axis, GW+DMFT, and ab initio dynamical vertex approximation (D$Γ$A). The latter includes the physics of GW, DMFT and non-local correlations beyond, and allows for calculating (quantum) critical exponents. We present results obtained by the thr…
We review the electronic structure of nickelate superconductors with and without effects of electronic correlations. As a minimal model we identify the one-band Hubbard model for the Ni 3$d_{x^2-y^2}$ orbital plus a pocket around the $A$-momentum. The latter however merely acts as a decoupled electron reservoir. This reservoir makes a careful translation from {nominal} Sr-doping to the doping of the one-band Hubbard model mandatory. Our dynamical mean-field theory calculations, in part already supported by experiment, indicate that the $Γ$ pocket, Nd 4$f$ orbitals, oxygen 2$p$ and {the} other …
We propose an electron-phonon parameterization which reliably reproduces the geometry and harmonic frequencies of a real system. With respect to standard electron-phonon models, it adds a "double-counting" correction, which takes into account the lattice deformation as the system is dressed by low-energy electron-phonon processes. We show the importance of this correction by studying potassium-doped picene (K$_3$Picene), recently claimed to be a superconductor with a $T_c$ of up to 18 K. The Hamiltonian parameters are derived from ab-initio density functional theory, and the lattice model is s…
