We study cuprates within Dynamical Cluster Approximation and find the pseudogap displays an isotope effect of the same sign as observed experimentally. Notwithstanding the non-phononic origin of the pseudogap the interplay between electronic repulsion and retarded phonon-mediated attraction gives rise to an isotope dependence of the antinodal spectra. Due to the strong momentum differentiation, such interplay is highly non-trivial and leads to the simultaneous presence of heavier quasiparticles along the nodal direction. We predict an isotope effect in electron-doped materials.
The c-axis charge dynamics of copper oxide materials in the underdoped and optimally doped regimes has been studied by considering the incoherent interlayer hopping. It is shown that the c-axis charge dynamics for the chain copper oxide materials is mainly governed by the scattering from the in-plane fluctuation, and the c-axis charge dynamics for the no-chain copper oxide materials is dominated by the scattering from the in-plane fluctuation incorporating with the interlayer disorder, which would be suppressed when the holon pseudogap opens at low temperatures and lower doping levels, leading…
The anomalous momentum and doping dependence of the electron spectral function and electron dispersion for copper oxide materials in the underdoped regime are studied within the t-J model. It is shown that the electron spectrum is changed with dopings, and the electron dispersion exhibits a flat band around ($π$,0) point in the Brillouin zone, which leads to the normal-state pseudogap formation. The theoretical results are consistent with the experiments and numerical simulations.
One of the leading issues in high-$\rm T_c$ copper oxide superconductors is the origin of the pseudogap phase in the underdoped regime of their phase diagram. Using polarized neutron diffraction, a novel magnetic order has been identified as an hidden order parameter of the pseudogap as the transition temperature corresponds to what is expected for the pseudogap. The observed magnetic order preserves translational symmetry as predicted for orbital moments in the circulating current theory. Being now reported in three different cuprates familles, it appears as a universal phenomenon whatever th…
Within the t-J model, the charge dynamics of copper oxide materials in the underdoped regime is studied based on the fermion-spin theory. It is shown that both in-plane charge dynamics and c-axis charge dynamics are mainly governed by the scattering from the in-plane fluctuation, which would be suppressed when the holon pseudogap opens at low temperatures, leading to the temperature linear to the nonlinear range in the in-plane resistivity and crossovers to the semiconducting-like range in the c-axis resistivity.
The isotope effect provided a crucial key to the development of the BCS (Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer) microscopic theory of superconductivity for conventional superconductors. In superconducting cooper oxides (cuprates) showing an unconventional type of superconductivity, the oxygen isotope effect is very peculiar: the exponential coefficient strongly depends on doping level. No consensus has been reached so far on the origin of the isotope effect in the cuprates. Here we show that the oxygen isotope effect in cuprates is in agreement with the bisoliton theory of superconductivity.
We present a valence transition model for electron- and hole-doped cuprates, within which there occurs a discrete jump in ionicity Cu$^{2+} \to$ Cu$^{1+}$ upon doping, at or near optimal doping in the electron-doped compounds and at the pseudogap phase transition in the hole-doped materials. Doped cuprates have negative charge-transfer gaps, just as rare earth nickelates and BaBiO$_3$. Because of strong correlations and small $d-p$ electron hoppings the systems behave as effective $\frac{1}{2}$-filled Cu-band in the undoped state, and as correlated two-dimensional geometrically frustrated near…
We apply strong magnetic fields of H=28.5 \sim 43 T to suppress superconductivity (SC) in the cuprates Bi_{2}Sr_{2-x}La_xCuO_{6+δ} (x=0.65, 0.40, 0.25, 0.15 and 0), and investigate the low temperature (T) normal state by ^{63}Cu nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate (1/T_1) measurements. We find that the pseudogap (PG) phase persists deep inside the overdoped region but terminates at x \sim 0.05 that corresponds to the hole doping concentration of approximately 0.21. Beyond this critical point, the normal state is a Fermi liquid characterized by the T_1T=const relation. A comparison of the supe…
In the high-transition-temperature (high-Tc) superconductors the pseudogap phase becomes predominant when the density of doped holes is reduced1. Within this phase it has been unclear which electronic symmetries (if any) are broken, what the identity of any associated order parameter might be, and which microscopic electronic degrees of freedom are active. Here we report the determination of a quantitative order parameter representing intra-unit-cell nematicity: the breaking of rotational symmetry by the electronic structure within CuO2 unit cell. We analyze spectroscopic-imaging scanning tunn…
Within the Hubbard-Holstein model with long-range Coulomb forces, we revisit the charge-ordering scenario for the superconducting cuprates and account for the presence or the absence of a formed stripe phase in different classes of cuprates. We also evaluate the mean-field and the fluctuation-corrected critical lines for charge ordering and we relate them with the various pseudogap crossover lines occurring in the cuprates and we discuss a mechanism for their peculiar isotopic dependence. Considering the dynamical nature of the charge-ordering transition, we explain the spread of T* and of its…
We report measurements of the anisotropy of the spin echo decay for the inner layer Cu site of the triple layer cuprate, Hg_0.8Re_0.2Ba_2Ca_2Cu_3O_8 (T_c=126 K) in the pseudogap T regime below T_pg ~ 170 K and the corresponding analysis for their interpretation. As the field alignment is varied, the shape of the decay curve changes from Gaussian (H_0 \parallel c) to single exponential (H_0 \perp c). The latter characterizes the decay caused by the fluctuations of adjacent Cu nuclear spins caused by their interactions with electron spins. The angular dependence of the second moment (T_{2M}^{-2}…
Recently developed numerical methods have enabled the explicit construction of the superconducting state of the Hubbard model of strongly correlated electrons in parameter regimes where the model also exhibits a pseudogap and a Mott insulating phase. $d_{x^2-y^2}$ symmetry superconductivity is found to occur in proximity to the Mott insulator, but separated from it by a pseudogapped nonsuperconducting phase. The superconducting transition temperature and order parameter amplitude are found to be maximal at the onset of the normal-state pseudogap. The emergence of superconductivity from the nor…
The momentum and doping dependence of the electron spectrum of copper oxide materials in the underdoped regime is studied within the t-J model. It is shown that the pseudogap opens near ($π$,0) point in the Brillouin zone, and the electron dispersion exhibits the flat band around ($π$,0), which are consistent with the experiments.
Cluster dynamical mean field methods are used to calculate the superconductivity-induced changes in the interplane conductivity and Raman scattering cross section of the two dimensional Hubbard model. When superconductivity emerges from the pseudogap, the superconducting response is found to be diminished in amplitude, broadened and, in the case of the interplane conductivity, shifted to higher frequency. The results are in agreement with data on high temperature copper-oxide superconductors indicating that the Hubbard model contains the essential low energy physics of the pseudogap and its in…
A compact expression has been obtained for the superexchange coupling of magnetic ions via intermediate anions with regard to polaron effects at both magnetic ions and intermediate anions. This expression is used to analyze the main features of the behavior of isotope shifts for temperatures of three types in layered cuprates: the Neel temperatures ($T_N$), critical temperatures of transitions to a superconducting state ($T_C$), and characteristic temperatures of the pseudogap in the normal state ($T^*$).
Within the stripe quantum critical point theory for high T_c superconductors, we point out that there is a direct contribution of charge collective fluctuations to the optical absorption and to the Raman spectra. In this latter case, we find that the critical charge collective modes can or can not be excited depending on the direction of their wavevector and on the polarization of the incoming and outgoing photons. This indicates a marked distinction between quasiparticles which are strongly and weakly coupled to critical collective modes and provides a direct confirmation that the order assoc…
In the quest to understand high-temperature superconductivity in copper oxides, a vigorous debate has been focused on the pseudogap - a partial gap that opens over portions of the Fermi surface in the 'normal' state above the bulk critical temperature ($T_{c}$). The pseudogap has been attributed to precursor superconductivity, to the existence of preformed pairs, or to competing orders such as charge-density waves. A direct determination of the charge of carriers as a function of temperature and bias could help resolve among these alternatives. Here, we report measurements of the shot noise of…
The magnetic response expected from a state characterized by rotating antiferromagnetism in a neutron-scattering experiment is calculated. We predict the occurrence of a peak at the frequency of the rotation of the rotating antiferromagnetic order parameter. The doping dependence of this frequency is very similar to that of the frequency of the magnetic resonance observed in the neutron-scattering experiments for the hole-doped high-$T_C$ cuprates. This leads us to propose the rotating antiferromagnetism as a possible mechanism for this magnetic resonance. We conclude that while the magnitude …
Electron behavior in doped Mott systems continues to be a major unsolved problem in quantum many-electron physics. A central issue in understanding the universal Mott behavior in a variety of complex systems is to understand the nature of their electron-hole pair excitation modes. Using high resolution resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) we resolve the momentum dependence of electron-hole pair excitations in two major classes of doped copper oxides which reveals a Mott pseudogap over the full Brillouin zone and over the entire phase diagram. The pair bandwidth and zone-boundary pair vel…
We propose that an extension of the exciton concept to doped Mott insulators offers a fruitful insight into challenging issues of the copper oxide superconductors. In our extension, new fermionic excitations called cofermions emerge in conjunction to generalized excitons. The cofermions hybridize with conventional quasiparticles. Then a hybridization gap opens, and is identified as the pseudogap observed in the underdoped cuprates. The resultant Fermi-surface reconstruction naturally explains a number of unusual properties of the underdoped cuprates, such as the Fermi arc and/or pocket formati…
A characteristic feature of the copper oxide high-temperature superconductors is the dichotomy between the electronic excitations along the nodal (diagonal) and antinodal (parallel to the Cu-O bonds) directions in momentum space, generally assumed to be linked to the "d-wave" symmetry of the superconducting state. Angle-resolved photoemission measurements in the superconducting state have revealed a quasiparticle spectrum with a d-wave gap structure that exhibits a maximum along the antinodal direction and vanishes along the nodal direction. Subsequent measurements have shown that, at low dopi…
Optical conductivity of the weakly doped two-dimensional repulsive Hubbard model on the square lattice with nearest and next nearest hoppings is calculated within the generalized dynamical-mean field (DMFT+Σ_p) approach which includes correlation length scale ξinto the standard DMFT equations via the momentum dependent self-energy Σ_p, with full account of appropriate vertex corrections. This approach takes into consideration non-local dynamical correlations induced e.g. by short-ranged collective SDW-like antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations, which (at high enough temperatures) can be viewed a…
Using the strong coupling diagram technique equations are derived for hole Green's functions of the three-band Hubbard model, which describes Cu-O planes of high-$T_c$ cuprates. The equations are self-consistently solved in the approximation, in which the series for the irreducible part in powers of the oxygen-copper hopping constant is truncated to two lowest-order terms. For parameters used for hole-doped cuprates the calculated energy spectrum consists of lower and upper Hubbard subbands of predominantly copper nature, oxygen bands with a small admixture of copper states and the Zhang-Rice …
This article is devoted to a discussion of stripe and electron-nematic order and their connection to electronic properties in the pseudogap regime of copper-oxide superconductors. We review basic properties of these symmetry-breaking ordering phenomena as well as proposals which connect them to quantum-oscillation measurements. Experimental data indicate that these orders are unlikely to be the cause of the pseudogap phenomenon, implying that they occur on top of the pseudogap state which itself is of different origin. Specifically, we discuss the idea that the non-superconducting pseudogap gr…
We report atomic scale characterization of the pseudogap state in a high-T$_c$ superconductor, Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+δ}$. The electronic states at low energies within the pseudogap exhibit spatial modulations having an energy-independent incommensurate periodicity. These patterns, which are oriented along the copper-oxygen bond directions, appear to be a consequence of an electronic ordering phenomenon--the observation of which correlates with the pseudogap in the density of electronic states. Our results provide a stringent test for various ordering scenarios in the cuprates, which have b…
The pseudogap state is widely regarded as a precursor to high-temperature superconductivity yet remains poorly understood. Using high field (30 T) NMR, we report two electronically distinct oxygen sites within the copper-oxygen (Cu-O) planes of an underdoped cuprate in the pseudogap state. At temperatures well above the bulk superconducting transition, roughly 25% of the oxygen sites evidence superconducting pair formation, the remaining evidence antiferromagnetic ordering on the nearest neighbor Cu sites. Any superconducting fluctuations are slower than the microsecond timescales of the NMR p…
The role of the anti-bonding state in the electron correlations in Copper Oxide HTSC is analyzed. Then the t-J Hamiltonian is used to establish the formation of the charge stripes in underdoped oxides. It is proposed that these stripes make up the boundaries between the two degenerate anti-ferromagnetic (AFM) states, and that they are a key factor in switching between these states. We also provide a theoretical expression for the charge driven AFM magnons that have been observed by Neutron scattering experiments. Finally, the double correlation theory is applied to the stripe phase of holes to…
We report nuclear magnetic resonance studies on the low-doped n-type copper-oxide Pr_{0.91}LaCe_{0.09}CuO_{4-y} (T_c=24 K) in the superconducting state and in the normal state uncovered by the application of a strong magnetic field. We find that when the superconductivity is removed, the underlying ground state is the Fermi liquid state. This result is at variance with that inferred from previous thermal conductivity measurement and contrast with that in p-type copper-oxides with a similar doping level where high-T_c superconductivity sets in within the pseudogap phase. The data in the superco…
We have identified the unscreened Froehlich electron-phonon interaction (EPI) as the most essential for pairing in cuprate superconductors as now confirmed by isotope substitution, recent angle-resolved photoemission (ARPES), and some other experiments. Low-energy physics is that of mobile lattice polarons and bipolarons in the strong EPI regime. Many experimental observations have been predicted or explained in the framework of our "Coulomb-Froehlich" model, which fully takes into account the long-range Coulomb repulsion and the Froehlich EPI. They include pseudo-gaps, unusual isotope effects…
Although it is generally accepted that superconductivity (SC) is unconventional in the high- transition temperature copper oxides (high-Tc cuprates), the relative importance of phenomena such as spin and charge (stripe) order, SC fluctuations, proximity to a Mott insulator, a pseudogap phase, and quantum criticality are still a matter of great debate1. In electron-doped cuprates, the absence of an anomalous pseudogap phase in the underdoped region of the phase diagram2 and weaker electron correlations3,4, suggest that Mott physics and other unidentified competing orders are less relevant and t…
We calculated the self-energy corrections beyond the mean-field solution of the rotating antiferromagnetism theory using the functional integral approach. The frequency dependence of the scattering rate ${1}/τ$ is evaluated for different temperatures and doping levels, and is compared with other approaches and with experiment. The general trends we found are fairly consistent with the extended Drude analysis of the optical conductivity, and with the nearly antiferromagnetic Fermi liquid as far as the ${\bf k}$-anisotropy is concerned and some aspects of the Marginal-Fermi liquid behavior. The …
The last few years have seen significant experimental progress in characterizing the copper-based hole-doped high temperature superconductors in the regime of low hole density, p. Quantum oscillations, NMR, X-ray, and STM experiments have shed much light on the nature of the ordering at low temperatures. We review evidence that the order parameter in the non-Lanthanum-based cuprates is a d-form factor density-wave. This novel order acts as an unexpected window into the electronic structure of the pseudogap phase at higher temperatures in zero field: we argue in favor of a `fractionalized Fermi…
In the pseudogap state of the high-Tc copper-oxide (cuprate) superconductors, angle-resolved photoemission (ARPES) measurements have seen an Fermi arc, i.e., an open-ended gapless section in the large Fermi surface, rather than a closed loop expected of an ordinary metal. This is all the more puzzling because Fermi pockets (small closed Fermi surface features) have been suggested from recent quantum oscillation measurements. The Fermi arcs have worried the high-Tc community for many years because they cannot be understood in terms of existing theories. Theorists came up with a way out in the f…
We report the results of the Knight shift by 63,65Cu-nuclear-magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements on single-layered copper-oxide Bi2Sr2-xLaxCuO6+delta conducted under very high magnetic fields up to 44 T. The magnetic field suppresses superconductivity completely and the pseudogap ground state is revealed. The 63Cu-NMR Knight shift shows that there remains a finite density of states (DOS) at the Fermi level in the zero-temperature limit, which indicates that the pseudogap ground state is a metallic state with a finite volume of Fermi surface. The residual DOS in the pseudogap ground state dec…
We report high-resolution photoemission spectroscopy of newly-discovered iron-based layered superconductor La(O$_{0.93}$F$_{0.07}$)FeAs (Tc = 24 K). We found that the superconducting gap shows a marked deviation from the isotropic s-wave symmetry. The estimated gap size at 5 K is 3.6 meV in the s- or axial p-wave case, while it is 4.1 meV in the polar p- or d-wave case. We also found a pseudogap of 15-20 meV above Tc, which is gradually filled-in with increasing temperature and closes at temperature far above Tc similarly to copper-oxide high-temperature superconductors.
The standard theory of metals, Fermi liquid theory, hinges on the key assumption that although the electrons interact, the low-energy excitation spectrum stands in a one-to-one correspondence with that of a non-interacting system. In the normal state of the copper-oxide high-temperature superconductors, drastic deviations from the Fermi liquid picture obtain, highlighted by a pseudogap, broad spectral features and $T-$ linear resistivity. This article focuses on the series of experiments on the copper-oxide superconductors which reveal that the number of low-energy addition states per electron…
High-temperature superconductivity in iron-arsenic materials (pnictides) near an antiferromagnetic phase raises the possibility of spin-fluctuation-mediated pairing. However, the interplay between antiferromagnetic fluctuations and superconductivity remains unclear in the underdoped regime, which is closer to the antiferromagnetic phase. Here we report that the superconducting gap of the underdoped pnictides scales linearly with the transition temperature, and that a distinct pseudogap coexisting with the SC gap develops on underdoping. This pseudogap occurs on Fermi surface sheets connected b…
We derive analytic expressions for the critical temperatures of the superconducting (SC) and pseudogap (PG) transitions of the high-Tc cuprates as a function of doping. These are in excellent agreement with the experimental data both for single-layered materials such as LSCO, Bi2201 and Hg1201 and multi-layered ones, such as Bi2212, Bi2223, Hg1212 and Hg1223. Optimal doping occurs when the chemical potential vanishes, thus leading to an universal expression for the optimal SC transition temperatures. This allows for the obtainment of a quantitative description of the growth of such temperature…
The polaron binding energy E_{p} in undoped parent cuprates has been determined to be about 1.0 eV from the unconventional oxygen-isotope effect on the antiferromagnetic ordering temperature. The deduced value of E_{p} is in quantitative agreement with that estimated from independent optical data and that estimated theoretically from the measured dielectric constants. The substantial oxygen-isotope effect on the in-plane supercarrier mass observed in optimally doped cuprates suggests that polarons are bound into the Cooper pairs. We also identify the phonon modes that are strongly coupled to c…
Close to optimal doping, the copper oxide superconductors show 'strange metal' behavior, suggestive of strong fluctuations associated with a quantum critical point. Such a critical point requires a line of classical phase transitions terminating at zero temperature near optimal doping inside the superconducting 'dome'. The underdoped region of the temperature-doping phase diagram from which superconductivity emerges is referred to as the 'pseudogap' because evidence exists for partial gapping of the conduction electrons, but so far there is no compelling thermodynamic evidence as to whether th…
The pseudogap is one of the most pervasive phenomena of high temperature superconductors. It is attributed either to incoherent Cooper pairing setting in above the superconducting transition temperature Tc, or to a hidden order parameter competing with superconductivity. Here we use inelastic neutron scattering from underdoped YBa(2)Cu(3)O(6.6) to show that the dispersion relations of spin excitations in the superconducting and pseudogap states are qualitatively different. Specifically, the extensively studied "hour glass" shape of the magnetic dispersions in the superconducting state is no lo…
We have studied the oxygen-isotope effect on the superconducting transition temperature $T_{c}$ in overdoped Y$_{1-x}$Ca$_{x}$Ba$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{7-δ}$ with $x$ = 0.10, 0.20, and 0.25. We find the oxygen-isotope exponent $α_{O}$ to be small ($\sim$0.02) for $x$ = 0.10 but substantial ($\sim$0.1) for $x$ = 0.20 and 0.25. The doping level above which $α_{O}$ increases sharply coincides with a quantum critical point where the normal-state pseudogap starts to diminish. The present isotope-effect experiments provide direct and quantitative constraints on the pairing mechanism of high-temperature su…
We present a short review of our basic understanding of the physics of copper - oxide superconductors and formulate the list of "solved" and "unsolved" problems. The main problem remains theoretical description of the properties of the normal state, requiring clarification of the nature of the so called pseudogap state. We review simplified models of the pseudogap state, based on the scenario of strong electron scattering by (pseudogap) fluctuations of "dielectric" (AFM, CDW) short - range order and the concept of "hot" spots (patches) on the Fermi surface. Pseudogap fluctuations are described…
Irrespective of the class they belong to, all the hole doped high-Tc cuprate superconductors show an anti-correlation between the superconducting transition temperature and the characteristic pseudogap energy in the underdoped region. The doping dependent pseudogap in the quasiparticle spectral density is believed to remove low-energy electronic states and thereby reduce the superconducting condensate. Impurities within the CuO2 plane, on the other hand, break Cooper pairs in the unitarity limit and diminish superfluid density. Both pseudogap in pure cuprates and impurity scattering in disorde…
The phase diagram of superconducting copper oxides is calculated as a function of doping based on a theory of dynamic stripe induced superconductivity. The two major conclusions from the theory and the numerical analysis are that T* (the pseudogap onset) and Tc (superconductivity onset) are correlated through the pseudogap, which induces a gap in the single particle energies that persists into the superconducting state. By decreasing the doping the pseudogap Delta* increases and T* increases, but when Delta* exceeds a certain critical value the superconducting transition temperature Tc is supp…
In a multiorbital model of the cuprate high-temperature superconductors soft antiferromagnetic (AF) modes are assumed to reconstruct the Fermi surface to form nodal pockets. The subsequent charge ordering transition leads to a phase with a spatially modulated transfer of charge between neighboring oxygen p_x and p_y orbitals and also weak modulations of the charge density on the copper d_{x^2-y^2} orbitals. As a prime result of the AF Fermi surface reconstruction, the wavevectors of the charge modulations are oriented along the crystalline axes with a periodicity that agrees quantitatively wit…
We studied the oxygen isotope effect (OIE) on the zero point motion and the thermal motion as well as on structural parameters in La$_2$CuO$_4$ by means of high-resolution neutron diffraction experiments. We found a negative OIE on the lattice parameters (-0.01%). The OIE on the isotropic thermal parameters turned out to be positive for lanthanum, copper and negative for the oxygen atoms, respectively. The Rietvield refinement of the anisotropic thermal parameters of the different directions yielded the same sign of the OIE for each ion. Our analysis shows that the OIE on isotropic thermal par…
High-temperature superconductivity emerges in the CuO$_2$ plane upon doping a Mott insulator. To ascertain the influence of Mott physics plus short-range correlations, we solve a three-band copper-oxide model in the charge-transfer regime using cellular dynamical mean-field theory with continuous-time quantum Monte Carlo as an impurity solver. We report the normal and superconducting phase diagram of this model as a function of doping, interaction strength and temperature. Upon hole doping of the charge-transfer insulator, the phase boundary between pseudogap and correlated metal consists of a…
We report an inelastic-neutron-scattering and muon-spin-relaxation study of the effect of 2% spinless (Zn) impurities on the magnetic order and dynamics of YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6.6}$, an underdoped high-temperature superconductor that exhibits a prominent spin-pseudogap in its normal state. Zn substitution induces static magnetic order at low temperatures and triggers a large-scale spectral-weight redistribution from the magnetic resonant mode at 38 meV into uniaxial, incommensurate spin excitations with energies well below the spin-pseudogap. These observations indicate a competition between inco…
We analyze non - Fermi liquid (NFL) behavior of fluctuating gap model (FGM) of pseudogap behavior in both 1D and 2D. We discuss in detail quasiparticle renormalization (Z - factor), demonstrating a kind of "marginal" Fermi liquid or Luttinger liquid behavior and topological stability of the "bare" Fermi surface (Luttinger theorem). In 2D case we discuss effective picture of Fermi surface "destruction" both in "hot spots" model of dielectric (AFM, CDW) pseudogap fluctuations, as well as for qualitatively different case of superconducting d - wave fluctuations, reflecting NFL spectral density be…
The isotope effect (IE) in the two-dimensional Hubbard model with Holstein phonons is studied using the dynamical cluster approximation with quantum Monte Carlo. At small electron-phonon (EP) coupling the IE is negligible. For larger EP coupling there is a large and positive IE on the superconducting temperature that decreases with increasing doping. A significant IE also appears in the low-energy density of states, kinetic energy and charge excitation spectrum. A negligible IE is found in the pseudogap and antiferromagnetic (AF) properties at small doping whereas the AF susceptibility at inte…
Recent research suggests that the charge carriers in the paramagnetic state of the magnetoresistive manganites are small polarons. Here we report studies of the oxygen-isotope effects on the intrinsic resistivity and thermoelectric power in several ferromagnetic manganites. The precise measurements of these isotope effects allow us to make a quantitative data analysis. Our results do not support a simple small-polaron model, but rather provide compelling evidence for the presence of small immobile bipolarons, i.e., pairs of small polarons. Since the bipolarons in the manganites are immobile, t…
The most intriguing observation of cuprate experiments is most likely the metal-insulator-crossover (MIC), seen in the underdome region of the temperature-doping phase diagram of copper-oxides under a strong magnetic field, when the superconductivity is suppressed. This MIC, which results in such phenomena as heat conductivity downturn, anomalous Lorentz ratio, nonlinear entropy, insulating ground state, nematicity- and stripe-phases and Fermi pockets, reveals the nonconventional dielectric property of the pseudogap-normal phase. Since conventional superconductivity appears from a conducting n…
The presence of charge order in high-transition-temperature copper oxides (high-Tc cuprates) was identified a decade ago. Now it is a universally observed order like the antiferromagnetic and the superconducting orders of the cuprates. The charge order shows up in various forms depending on materials, and it overlaps other orders in the phase diagram. Because of this diversity and complexity it has been far from clear whether or not the charge order has a direct relevance to superconductivity and to the mysterious pseudogap phenomenon. However, the research development in the last few years ha…
The loop-current state discovered in the pseudogap phase of cuprates breaks time reversal symmetry and lowers the point group symmetry of the crystal. The order parameter and the magnetic structure within each unit cell which is associated with it can be described by a toroidal moment parallel to the copper-oxide planes. We discuss lattice point group symmetry of the magnetic structure. As an application, we discuss a few effects that necessarily accompany order parameter in the pseudogap phase. The magnitude estimated for these specific effects makes them hard to observe because they rely on …
Among all experimental observations of cuprate physics, the metal-insulator-crossover (MIC), seen in the pseudogap (PG) region of the temperature-doping phase diagram of copper-oxides under a strong magnetic field, when the superconductivity is suppressed, is most likely the most intriguing one. Since it was expected that the PG-normal state for these materials, as for conventional superconductors, is conducting. This MIC, revealed in such phenomena as heat conductivity downturn, anomalous Lorentz ratio, insulator resistivity boundary, nonlinear entropy, resistivity temperature upturn, insulat…
The cuprate high-temperature superconductors are among the most intensively studied materials, yet essential questions regarding their principal phases and the transitions between them remain unanswered. Generally thought of as doped charge-transfer insulators, these complex lamellar oxides exhibit pseudogap, strange-metal, superconducting and Fermi-liquid behaviour with increasing hole-dopant concentration. Here we propose a simple inhomogeneous Mott-like (de)localization model wherein exactly one hole per copper-oxygen unit is gradually delocalized with increasing doping and temperature. The…
