We studied the oxygen isotope effect (OIE) on the zero point motion and the thermal motion as well as on structural parameters in La$_2$CuO$_4$ by means of high-resolution neutron diffraction experiments. We found a negative OIE on the lattice parameters (-0.01%). The OIE on the isotropic thermal parameters turned out to be positive for lanthanum, copper and negative for the oxygen atoms, respectively. The Rietvield refinement of the anisotropic thermal parameters of the different directions yielded the same sign of the OIE for each ion. Our analysis shows that the OIE on isotropic thermal parameters is most pronounced for La at 15 K (up to 100%) which we found to be originating mainly from the thermal motion in x-direction as determined from the refinement of the anisotropic thermal parameters.
We study the zero-point and thermal ionic motion in La$_2$CuO$_4$ by means of high-resolution neutron diffraction experiments. Our results demonstrate anisotropic motion of O and to a lesser extent of Cu ions, both consistent with the structure of coupled CuO$_6$ octahedra, and quantify the relative effects of zero-point and thermal contributions to ionic motion. By substitution of $^{18}$O, we find that the oxygen isotope effect on the lattice dimensions is small and negative ($-0.01\%$), while the isotope effect on the ionic displacement parameters is significant ($-6$ to $50\%$). We use our…
The oxygen isotope effect on the superconductivity, stripe phase and structure transition is systematically investigated in La$_{1.6-x}$Nd$_{0.4}$Sr$_{x}$CuO$_4$ with static stripe phase. Substitution of $^{16}$O by $^{18}$O leads to a decrease in superconducting transition temperature T$_C$, while enhances the temperature of the structural transition from low-temperature-orthorhombic (LTO) phase to low-temperature-tetragonal (LTT) phase. Compared to the Nd free sample, a larger isotope effect on $T_C$ is observed in La$_{1.6-x}$Nd$_{0.4}$Sr$_{x}$CuO$_4$. These results indicate that the distor…
We have resolved a controversial issue concerning the oxygen-isotope shift of the ferromagnetic transition temperature T_{C} in the manganite La_{0.8}Ca_{0.2}MnO_{3+y}. We show that the giant oxygen-isotope shift of T_C observed in the normal oxygen-isotope exchanged samples is indeed intrinsic, while a much smaller shift observed in the argon annealed samples is an artifact. The argon annealing causes the 18O sample to partially exchange back to the 16O isotope due to a small 16O contamination in the Ar gas. Such a contamination is commonly caused by the oxygen outgas that is trapped in the t…
X-ray absorption in $\rm Sr_{2}CuO_{4-δ}-La_{2}CuO_4$ (SCO-LCO) superlattices shows a variable occupation with doping of a hole state different from holes doped for $x \lesssim x_{optimal}$ in bulk $\rm La_{2-x}Sr_{x}CuO_4$ and suggests that this hole state is on apical oxygen atoms and polarized in the $a-b$ plane. Considering the surface reflectivity gives a good qualitative description of the line shapes of resonant soft X-ray scattering. The interference between superlattice and surface reflections was used to distinguish between scatterers in the SCO and the LCO layers, with the two hole …
We report magnetic susceptibility $χ(T)$ measurements on oxygen-isotope exchanged La$_{1-x}$Ca$_{x}$MnO$_{3+y}$ up to 700 K. The $1/χ(T)$ data show that the ferromagnetic exchange-energy $J$ depends strongly on the oxygen-isotope mass. The isotope effect on $J$ decreases with temperature up to 400 K and then increases again with temperature above 400 K. This unusual temperature dependence of the isotope effect cannot be explained by existing theories of the colossal magnetoresistance effect for doped manganites. The present results thus provide essential constraints on the physics of manganite…
We systematically investigate effect of oxygen isotope in $(Pr_{1-x}Sm_x)_{0.7}Ca_{0.3}CoO_3$ which shows a crossover with x from ferromagnetic metal to the insulator with spin-state transition. A striking feature is that effect of oxygen isotope on the ferromagnetic transition is negligible in the metallic phase, while replacing $^{16}O$ with $^{18}O$ leads to a giant up-shift of the spin-state transition temperature ($T_s$) in the insulating phase, especially $T_s$ shifts from 36 to 54 K with isotope component $α_S=-4.7$ for the sample with x=0.175. A metal-insulator transition is induced by…
We have investigated the effect of oxygen isotope substitution on the metal-insulator transition temperature and the resistivity of the narrow band manganite (La0.25Pr0.75)0.7Ca0.3MnO3 in a constant magnetic field. A set of 16 samples having different mixtures of 16O, 17O and 18O isotopes with average mass varying from 16.0 to 17.8 a.m.u. was studied. We have found that the magnetoresistance and the isotope effect can be linked together with a single parameter - effective magnetic field, which decreases linearly with an increase of average oxygen mass with a slope of -2 T/a.m.u. The applicabil…
The dispersion of the Cu-O bond-stretching vibrations in overdoped La$_{1.7}$Sr$_{0.3}$CuO$_4$ (not superconducting) has been studied by high resolution inelastic neutron scattering. It was found that the doping-induced renormalization of the so-called breathing and the half-breathing modes is larger than in optimally doped La$_{1.85}$Sr$_{0.15}$CuO$_4$. On the other hand, the phonon linewidths are generally smaller in the overdoped sample. Features observed in optimally doped La$_{1.85}$Sr$_{0.15}$CuO$_4$ which suggest a tendency towards charge stripe formation are absent in overdoped La$_{1.…
In a recent work devoted to the magnetism of Li$_{2}$CuO$_{2}$, Shu et al. [New J. Phys. 19 (2017) 023026] have proposed a "simplified" unfrustrated microscopic model that differs considerably from the models refined through decades of prior work. We show that the proposed model is at odds with known experimental data, including the reported magnetic susceptibility $χ(T)$ data up to 550~K. Using an 8$^{\rm th}$ order high-temperature expansion for $χ(T)$, we show that the experimental data for Li$_{2}$CuO$_{2}$ are consistent with the prior model derived from inelastic neutron scattering (INS)…
The effect of $^{16}$O $\to$ $^{18}$O isotope substitution on electrical resistivity and magnetic susceptibility of Sm$_{1-x}$Sr$_x$MnO$_3$ manganites is analyzed. It is shown that the oxygen isotope substitution drastically affects the phase diagram at the crossover region between the ferromagnetic metal state and that of antiferromagnetic insulator (0.4 $< x <$ 0.6), and induces the metal-insulator transition at for $x$ = 0.475 and 0.5. The nature of antiferromagnetic insulator phase is discussed.
The superconducting properties of high-\tc\ materials are functions of carriers concentration, which is controlled by the concentration of defects including heterovalent cations, interstitial oxygen ions, and oxygen vacancies. Here we combine low-temperature thermal treatment of La$_{2-x}$Sr$_{x}$CuO$_{4}$ epitaxial thin films and confocal Raman spectroscopy to control and investigate oxygen vacancies. We demonstrate that the apical site is the most favorable position to accommodate oxygen vacancies under low-temperature annealing conditions. Additionally we show that in high-quality films of …
Oxygen isotope effects on the transport properties have been studied in high-quality epitaxial thin films of La_{0.75}Ca_{0.25}MnO_{3} and Nd_{0.7}Sr_{0.3}MnO_{3}. In the paramagnetic state, the resistivity can be well fitted by ρ(T) = (A/\sqrt{T})\exp(E_ρ/k_{B}T) with the parameters A and E_{a} depending strongly on the oxygen isotope mass. The resistivity below 80 K almost perfectly follows ρ= ρ_{o}+ Bω_{s}/\sinh^{2}(\hbarω_{s}/2k_{B}T) with \hbarω_{s}/k_{B} \sim 100 K. Both ρ_{o} and B increase by about 15(3)% upon raplacing $^{16}$O by $^{18}$O. The results provide quantitative constraints…
We reinterpret neutron scattering and Raman spectroscopy experiments in La(2-x)Sr(x)CuO(4), showing modulation of spin and lattice degrees of freedom both in the low-temperature orthorhombic and tetragonal phases, in terms of a magneto-elastic coupling between noncollinear configurations for the copper spins and the oxygen octahedra. The magneto-elastic coupling furthermore explains the recently discovered magnetic-field induced untwinning in La(2-x)Sr(x)CuO(4), for x<2%, and allows us to understand why in La(2-x-y)Sr(x)Nd(y)CuO(4) with y=0.4 and x=1/8, for example, when (1,0) and/or (0,1) sta…
In a recent paper, Nagaev cited the unpublished paper by Franck et al.to support his theoretical model for the mechanism of the giant isotope effect observed in La_{1-x}Ca_{x}MnO_{3+y} (x = 0.20, y > 0). His model suggests that the off-stoichiometric oxygen content depends strongly on the oxygen isotope mass, which leads to a giant oxygen-isotope effect. Here I show that his theoretical model is not consistent with any experimental results (even the results recently published by Franck et al.), and his estimate of polaronic bandwidth is wrong due to his misuse of polaronic theories.
Obtaining an accurate theoretical description of the emergent phenomena in oxide heterostructures is a major challenge. Recently, intriguing paramagnetic spin and pinned orbital moments have been discovered by x-ray magnetic circular dichroïsm measurements at the Cu $L_{2,3}$-edge of a tetragonal CuO/SrTiO$_3$ heterostructure. Using first principles calculations, we propose a scenario that explains both types of moments, based on the formation of oxygen vacancies in the TiO$_2$ interface layer. We show the emergence of a paramagnetic 2D electron gas hosted in the interface CuO layer. It is inv…
The magnetic ground state of an electron-doped cuprate superconductor Pr$_{1-x}$LaCe$_x$CuO$_{4+α-δ}$ ($x=0.11, α\simeq0.04$) has been studied by means of muon spin rotation/relaxation (\msr) over a wide variety of oxygen depletion, $0.03\leδ\le0.12$. Appearance of weak random magnetism over entire crystal volume has been revealed by a slow exponential relaxation. The absence of $δ$-dependence for the random magnetism and the multiplet pattern of muon Knight shift at higher fields strongly suggest that the random moments are associated with excited Pr$^{3+}$ ions under crystal electric field.
We study the spin fluctuation dynamics of Cu-O chains in the oxygen deficient planes of YBa(2)Cu(3)O(6+x). The chains are described by a model including antiferromagnetic interactions between the spins and Kondo-like scattering of the oxygen holes by the copper spins. There are incommensurate spin fluctuations along the direction of the chains. The dynamic structure factor of this system is qualitatively different from that of a quasi one-dimensional localized antiferromagnet due to the presence of itinerant holes. We compute the dynamic structure factor that could be measured in neutron scatt…
Electron-doped and hole-doped superconducting cuprates exhibit a symmetric phase diagram as a function of doping. This symmetry is however only approximate. Indeed, electron-doped cuprates become superconductors only after a specific annealing process: This annealing affects the oxygen content by only a tiny amount, but has a dramatic impact on the electronic properties of the sample. Here we report the occurrence of superconductivity in oxygen-deficient Nd$_{2-x}$Ce$_x$CuO$_4$ thin films grown in an oxygen-free environment, after annealing in pure argon flow. As verified by x-ray diffraction,…
Recently a growing number of experiments have provided indications of the key role of polarons (composite particles formed by a charge strongly coupled with a local lattice deformation) in doped perovskites, hosting colossal magnetoresistance (CMR) and high Tc superconductivity. While the role of polarons is generally recognized in manganites due to the large amplitude of the local lattice deformation, the scientific debate remains open on the cuprates where the lattice deformation is smaller and the anomalous normal metallic phase becomes complex due to the coexistence of polarons with itiner…
We performed neutron powder diffraction measurements on the as-sintered (AS) and oxygen-reduced (OR) La$_{1.8}$Eu$_{0.2}$CuO$_{4+α-δ}$ (LECO). The structural parameters for oxygens in AS and OR samples refined by the Rietveld analysis are almost identical to those of the reference system, Pr$_{2}$CuO$_{4+α-δ}$. Thus, the two systems are comparable in terms of the structural changes in oxygens due to the annealing, although superconductivity appears only in LECO.
The optical conductivities of films of (La$_{0.5}$Pr$_{0.5}$)$_{0.7}$Ca$_{0.3}$MnO$_3$ with different oxygen isotopes ($^{16}$O and $^{18}$O) have been determined in the spectral range from 0.3 to 4.3 eV using a combination of transmission in the mid-infrared and ellipsometry from the near-infrared to ultra-violet regions. We have found that the isotope exchange strongly affects the optical response in the ferromagnetic phase in a broad frequency range, in contrast to the almost isotope-independent optical conductivity above $T_C$. The substitution by $^{18}$O strongly suppresses the Drude res…
The simple structure of HgBa$_2$CuO$_{4+δ}$ (Hg1201) is ideal among cuprates for study of the pseudogap phase as a broken symmetry state. We have performed $^{17}$O nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) on an underdoped Hg1201 crystal with transition temperature of 74 K to look for circulating orbital currents proposed theoretically and inferred from neutron scattering. The narrow spectra preclude static local fields in the pseudogap phase at the apical site, suggesting that the moments observed with neutrons are fluctuating. The NMR frequency shifts are consistent with a dipolar field from the Cu$…
The isotope effect provided a crucial key to the development of the BCS (Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer) microscopic theory of superconductivity for conventional superconductors. In superconducting cooper oxides (cuprates) showing an unconventional type of superconductivity, the oxygen isotope effect is very peculiar: the exponential coefficient strongly depends on doping level. No consensus has been reached so far on the origin of the isotope effect in the cuprates. Here we show that the oxygen isotope effect in cuprates is in agreement with the bisoliton theory of superconductivity.
Bulk crystals of electron-doped cuprates with the T'-type structure require both Ce substitutions and reduction annealing for the emergence of superconductivity while the reduction annealing alone can induce superconductivity in thin films of the T'-type cuprates. In order to reveal low-energy electronic states which are responsible for the superconductivity, we have conducted angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurements on thin films of the superconducting Ce-free T'-type cuprate Pr$_2$CuO$_4$. The results indicate that the overall band structure and the Fermi surface area of the su…
Here we report results of a density-matrix-renormalization-group (DMRG) calculation of the charge, spin, and pairing properties of a two-leg CuO Hubbard ladder. The outer oxygen atoms as well as the rung and leg oxygen atoms are included along with near-neighbor and oxygen-hopping matrix elements. This system allows us to study the effects of hole and electron doping on a system which is a charge transfer insulator at a filling of one hole per Cu and exhibits power law, d-wave-like pairing correlations when doped. In particular, we focus on the differences between doping with holes or electron…
An intact CuO$_2$ plane is widely believed to be a prerequisite for the high-$T_c$ superconductivity in cuprate superconductors. However, an exception may exist in the superconducting Ba$_2$CuO$_{3+δ}$ materials where CuO chains play a more important role. From first-principles density functional theory calculations, we have studied the electronic and magnetic structures of Ba$_2$CuO$_{3+δ}$. The stoichiometric Ba$_2$CuO$_3$ and Ba$_2$CuO$_4$ contain quasi-one-dimensional CuO chains and intact two-dimensional CuO$_2$ planes, respectively. In comparison with the nonmagnetic metal Ba$_2$CuO$_4$,…
The crystal and magnetic structures of the specified CMR manganite system have been studied as a function of $y=(0.2-1)$ across the metal-insulator (MI) transition, and of the oxygen mass ($^{16}$O, $^{18}$O). We quantitatively show how the polaronic narrowing of the carrier bandwidth and the crystal lattice micro-strains control the volume fractions of the mesoscopic ferro- and antiferromagnetic clusters. A well-defined dip in the transition temperatures and the suppression of all the types of long range ordering seen near the MI-transition at $y\simeq0.9$ indicate a key role of the quenched …
A limiting factor in the ability to interpret isotope effect measurements in cuprates is the absence of sufficiently accurate data for the whole phase diagram; there is precise data for Tc, but not for the antiferromagnetic transition temperature T_N. Extreme sensitivity of T_N to small changes in the amount of oxygen in the sample is the major problem. This problem is solved here by using the novel compound (Ca 0.1 La 0.9)(Ba 1.65 La 0.35)Cu 3 O y for which there is a region where T_N is independent of oxygen doping. Meticulous measurements of T_N for samples with oxygen 16 and oxygen 18 find…
We have studied the oxygen-isotope effect on the superconducting transition temperature $T_{c}$ in overdoped Y$_{1-x}$Ca$_{x}$Ba$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{7-δ}$ with $x$ = 0.10, 0.20, and 0.25. We find the oxygen-isotope exponent $α_{O}$ to be small ($\sim$0.02) for $x$ = 0.10 but substantial ($\sim$0.1) for $x$ = 0.20 and 0.25. The doping level above which $α_{O}$ increases sharply coincides with a quantum critical point where the normal-state pseudogap starts to diminish. The present isotope-effect experiments provide direct and quantitative constraints on the pairing mechanism of high-temperature su…
We address the effect of the field induced antiferromagnetism in paramagnetic state of the cuprate weak ferromagnet La$_2$CuO$_4$. The planar oxygen $^{17}$O Knight shift is shown to be an effective tool to inspect the effects of Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya coupling in cuprates in an external magnetic field. Field induced antiferromagnetism and anisotropic antiferromagnetic contribution to $^{17}$K explain the anomalies observed in $^{17}$O NMR in La$_2$CuO$_4$. The experimental observation of antiferromagnetic contribution to the $^{17}$O Knight shift provides probably the only way to find out the p…
Oxygen isotope substitution is performed in the perovskite cobalt oxide (Pr$_{0.7}$Sm$_{0.3}$)$_{0.7}$Ca$_{0.3}$CoO${_3}$ which shows a sharp spin state transition from the intermediate spin (IS) state to the low spin (LS) state at a certain temperature. The transition temperature of the spin state up-shifts with the substitution of $^{16}O$ by $^{18}$O from the resistivity and magnetic susceptibility measurements. The up-shift value is 6.8 K and an oxygen isotope exponent ($α_S$) is about -0.8. The large oxygen isotope effect indicates strong electron-phonon coupling in this material. The sub…
Layered copper oxides have highest superconducting transition temperatures at ambient pressure. Its mechanism remains a grand challenge in condensed matter physics. The essential physics lying in 2-dimensional copper-oxygen layers is well described by a single band Hubbard model or its strong coupling limit t-J model in 2-dimensional square lattice. Recently discovered high temperature superconductor Ba$_2$CuO$_{3+δ}$ with $δ\sim 0.2$ has different crystal structure with large portion of in-plane oxygen vacancies. We observe that an oxygen vacancy breaks the bond of its two neighboring copper …
An influence of the 16O-18O isotope substitutions on magnetic state of perovskite-type manganite (La0.25Pr0.75)0.7Ca0.3MnO3 is studied by 55Mn NMR. Successive cycling with an isochronal exposure at different magnetic fields up to H=8T is used to study the field-induced transition from antiferromagnetic insulating (AFI) state to the ferromagnetic metal (FMM) one in the 18O-enriched sample. After exposure at H>H_{cr} \sim 5.3T the NMR spectrum of the 18O-sample evidences for magnetic phase separation (PS) resulted in the coexisting AFI and FMM domains. Further increase of exposing field leads to…
A-site ordered manganites $R$BaMn$_{2}$O$_{6}$ ($R$ = La, Pr, Nd, Sm) were synthesized and the oxygen isotope effect in them was studied. It was found that the substitution of $^{16}$O by $^{18}$O has caused increases in both the Neel temperature ($T$$_{N}$) and the charge ordering temperature ($T$$_{CO}$) and an decrease in the Curie temperature ($T$$_{C}$). The isotope exponent is small on $T$$_{C}$ and $T$$_{CO}$ compared with that in A-site disordered manganites such as La$_{1-x}$Ca$_{x}$MnO$_{3}$, which may be caused by weaker electron-phonon coupling in A-site ordered ones. But the isoto…
A recent angle resolved photoelectron spectroscopy (ARPES) study by Douglas et al. \cite {dessau-comment} on oxygen isotope exchanged Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O$_{8+δ}$ superconductors reported an absence of isotope effect at optimal doping, questioning the previous work by us \cite {gweon-nature}. Here, we report a new result that sheds light on this puzzling discrepancy as well as the nature of the electron lattice interaction in the cuprates: the anomalous isotope effect at optimal doping \cite {gweon-nature}, re-confirmed here, vanishes on a mere 2 % overdoping of holes. This result implies a rapid c…
Samples of YBa2-xSrxCu3O7-d (x = 0.0, 0.50, 1.0) series were synthesized by solid-state reaction and first annealed in flowing O2 gas. All samples crystallized in orthorhombic structure, where orthorhombic distortion was found to decrease with an increase in x. Four probe resistivity measurements showed that superconducting transition temperature (Tc) decreases monotonically with x at a rate of dTc/dx = 1.3 K/at%. The sample with x=0 had a Tc = 91 K. The samples were further annealed in flowing N2 gas at 450 0C. The Tc of all samples decreased by nitrogen annealing. Interestingly, the decrease…
The heat carriers responsible for the unexpectedly large thermal Hall conductivity of the cuprate Mott insulator La$_2$CuO$_4$ were recently shown to be phonons. However, the mechanism by which phonons in cuprates acquire chirality in a magnetic field is still unknown. Here, we report a similar thermal Hall conductivity in two cuprate Mott insulators with significantly different crystal structures and magnetic orders - Nd$_2$CuO$_4$ and Sr$_2$CuO$_2$Cl$_2$ - and show that two potential mechanisms can be excluded - the scattering of phonons by rare-earth impurities and by structural domains. Ou…
The pseudogap state is widely regarded as a precursor to high-temperature superconductivity yet remains poorly understood. Using high field (30 T) NMR, we report two electronically distinct oxygen sites within the copper-oxygen (Cu-O) planes of an underdoped cuprate in the pseudogap state. At temperatures well above the bulk superconducting transition, roughly 25% of the oxygen sites evidence superconducting pair formation, the remaining evidence antiferromagnetic ordering on the nearest neighbor Cu sites. Any superconducting fluctuations are slower than the microsecond timescales of the NMR p…
We introduce a one-dimensional model for a CuO chain, with holes and $S=1/2$ spins localized in $3d_{x^2-y^2}$ orbitals, and $p_σ$ oxygen orbitals without holes in the ground state. We consider a single hole doped at an oxygen site and study its propagation by spin-flip processes. We develop the Green's function method and treat the hole-spin coupling in the self-consistent Born approximation, similar to that successfully used to study polarons in the regular $t$-$J$ model. We present an analytical solution of the problem and investigate whether the numerical integration is a good approximatio…
It is found that a strong inhomogeneous distribution of oxygen in single crystal La_{2}CuO_{4+δ} can lead to the formation of isolated superconducting inclusions, the average hole concentration being no more than 0.0024 per Cu atom. The behavior of the conductivity in the magnetic field below T=20 K is consistent with possible existence of a insulating low-temperature magnetic phase (spin density waves), which is typical of cuprates with excess oxygen.
We report a study of oxygen isotope effects on low temperature specific heat, magnetization, and resistivity of La$_{1-x}$Ca$_{x}$MnO$_{3}$ and (La$_{1-y}$Pr$_{y})_{0.67}$Ca$_{0.33}$MnO$_{3}$. For the metallic compositions of La$_{1-x}$Ca$_{x}$MnO$_{3}$ and for charge-ordered La$_{0.5}$Ca$_{0.5}$MnO$_{3}$ no change in low temperature specific heat has been detected with $^{16}$O -$^{18}$O exchange, while compounds of (La$_{1-y}$Pr$_{y})_{0.67}$Ca$_{0.33}$MnO$_{3}$ (0.4<y<0.6) show a significant change in low temperature properties. The low temperature specific heat indicates a presence of the …
We have performed a systematic angle-resolved photoemission study of as-grown and oxygen-reduced Pr$_{2-x}$Ce$_x$CuO$_4$ and Pr$_{1-x}$LaCe$_{x}$CuO$_4$ electron-doped cuprates. In contrast to the common belief, neither the band filling nor the band parameters are significantly affected by the oxygen reduction process. Instead, we show that the main electronic role of the reduction process is to remove an anisotropic leading edge gap around the Fermi surface. While the nodal leading edge gap is induced by long-range antiferomagnetic order, the origin of the antinodal one remains unclear.
The effect of 16O-18O isotope exchange on the electric resistivity was studied for (La(1-y)Pr(y))0.7Ca0.3MnO3 ceramic samples. Depending on y, this mixed perovskite exhibited different types of low-temperature behavior ranging from ferromagnetic metal (FM) to charge ordered (CO) antiferromagnetic insulator. It was found that at y=0.75, the substitution of 16O by 18O results in the reversible transition from a FM to a CO insulator at zero magnetic field. The applied magnetic field (H >= 2 T) transformed the sample with 18O again to the metallic state and caused the increase in the FM transition…
We have conducted a highly precise doping controlled experiment on a thin film of the single layer cuprate Bi2Sr2-xLaxCuOy (x = 0.6), in order to observe the superconducting insulating transition (SIT). Sr2+/La3+ substitution (x = 0.6) allowed us to start from a doping state in the vicinity of the SIT, which was further finely-tuned by varying the oxygen content in very small amounts through a vacuum anneal process. Measurements of the Hall effect at 300K and of the resistance vs. T, R(T), have been performed after each treatment. Approaching the SIT from the metallic side, and with decreasing…

The superconducting nominal "non-doped" $La_{1.85}Y_{0.15}CuO_4$ (LYCO) thin films are successfully prepared by dc magnetron-sputtering and in situ post-annealing in vacuum. The best $T_{C0}$ more than 13K is achieved in the optimal LYCO films with highly pure c-axis oriented T'-type structure. In the normal state, the quasi-quadratic temperature dependence of resistivity, the negative Hall coefficient and effect of oxygen content in the films are quite similar to the typical Ce-doped T'-214 cuprates, suggesting that T'-LYCO shows the electron-doping nature like known n-type cuprates, and is n…
We study experimentally and theoretically the effect of Eu doping and partial oxygen isotope substitution on the transport and magnetic characteristics and spin-state transitions in (Pr$_{1-y}$Eu$_y$)$_{0.7}$Ca$_{0.3}$CoO$_3$ cobaltites. The Eu doping level $y$ is chosen in the range of the phase diagram near the crossover between the ferromagnetic and spin-state transitions ($0.10 < y < 0.20$). We prepared a series of samples with different degrees of enrichment by the heavy oxygen isotope $^{18}$O, namely, containing 90%, 67%, 43%, 17%, and 0% of $^{18}$O. Based on the measurements of ac mag…
An inelastic neutron scattering experiment has been performed in the high-temperature superconductor $\rm YBa_2Cu_3O_{6.89}$ to search for an oxygen-isotope shift of the well-known magnetic resonance mode at 41 meV. Contrary to a recent prediction (I. Eremin, {\it et al.}, Phys. Rev. B {\bf 69}, 094517 (2004)), a negligible shift (at best $\leq$ +0.2 meV) of the resonance energy is observed upon oxygen isotope substitution ($^{16}$O$\to^{18}$O). This suggests a negligible spin-phonon interaction in the high-$T_c$ cuprates at optimal doping.
We present a combined magnetic neutron scattering and muon spin rotation study of the nature of the magnetic and superconducting phases in electronically phase separated La(2-x)Sr(x)CuO(4+y), x = 0.04, 065, 0.09. For all samples, we find long-range modulated magnetic order below T_N ~ T_c = 39 K. In sharp contrast wit oxygen-stoichiometric La(2-x)Sr(x)CuO(4), we find that the magnetic propagation vector as well as the ordered magnetic moment is independent of Sr content and consistent with that of the 'striped' cuprates. Our study provides direct proof that superoxygenation in La(2-x)Sr(x)CuO(…
